Britney Spears’ Tour ‘A Real Buzz’ For Openers Nervo

‘The nerves are gone now, and I just want to own it more,’ Nervo’s Liv tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears Photo: Jeremy Cowart/ WireImage The Femme Fatale Tour kicked off Thursday night to rave reviews, with critics giving Britney Spears props for her over-the-top stage show. The show is all about the ladies, thanks to opening slots from Nervo , Jessie and the Boy Toys, as well as Nicki Minaj, with Spears acting as the show’s head mistress. MTV News caught up with Liv from the DJ act Nervo on Friday (June 17), nearly 24 hours after their first warm-up gig for Ms. Spears. “I’ve got to say, it was a real buzz for us to open the show; that’s the selfish highlight,” she told MTV News. “We were honored to be there. I thought the crowd got our house music.” Liv had the pleasure of finally seeing Spears in concert for the first time and couldn’t help but rave about her. “I thought she was brilliant. It was my first time seeing Nicki, as well, and she was brilliant,” she said. “I love ‘Slave 4 U.’ I was really happy she was playing her oldies.” When fans first heard that Spears and Minaj would be touring together, no one knew how the two would mesh. But, as it turns out, Liv said they work just perfectly. “They’re both very strong women. Britney was the same old Britney we love,” she said. “They complemented each other.” In fact, there’s a real sense of camaraderie on the road. “The nerves are gone now, and I just want to own it more,” she said. “It really does [feel like girl power]. It’s very exciting. We’re all girls. This business is crazy, and it’s fun we can all be in it together. “It really is a machine. We’ve done RV tours before with club DJs, and this is so far and beyond from the RV tours,” she said. “The catering is insane; three-course meals, three times a day. I’ve never seen what it takes to be a part of one of these pop shows, and it takes so much work. It’s full on. It’s great. It’s amazing that she can take it all in stride all these years later.” Will you be checking out Britney’s latest tour? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Britney Spears

Lady Gaga’s ‘Edge Of Glory’: A Pop-Culture Cheat Sheet

In her newest video, Gaga pays homage to classic clips of the 1980s. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Getty Images The first thing that strikes you about Lady Gaga’s “The Edge of Glory” video is the fact that it’s steeped in the rich, gauzy traditions of classic pop clips and noticeably missing any of the allegories , agendas or, uh, afterbirth of her previous work. Simply put, “Edge” is an homage to an entire genre of videos that has since gone by the wayside — namely, the eternally soft-focused, ethereal mini-movies of the 1980s, (mostly) pop productions that reimagined cityscapes as dream-like fantasy worlds, where the just-wet streets shone like mirrors, the manholes frothed with steam and no piece of fabric was left un-billowed. These were decidedly big-budget, unapologetically Hollywood things, shot on studio backlots, glowing with million-dollar lighting budgets and given extra grandeur thanks to sweeping, soaring crane shots. They made no attempt to portray reality as anything of the sort — because, much like the songs they accompanied, there was rebellion in that fantasy — or of hiding their excesses. And, not surprisingly, as the decade came to a close, and earnestness began to reign supreme, they slowly disappeared (surely, their big budgets didn’t help their fate either). But with her new clip, Gaga resurrects the epic videos of the ’80s once again. And, seemingly, all at once. There truly are too many nods to the classics to list individually, and really, that’s beside the point. With “The Edge of Glory,” LG is paying tribute not to individual artists, but to an entire genre. Still, there are some whose influence stands above the rest, and we’ve combined them into one handy cheat sheet. Of course, in keeping with her tradition, not all of them come from the 1980s. Because if there’s anything Lady Gaga has proven, it’s that she refuses to be fenced in. Here’s our list: Bonnie Tyler : Welsh-born belter whose better-known videos (like “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero”) practically set the standard for the fantastical pop videos of the 1980s. Soft focus, arching crane shots, achingly staged lighting — they’re all there, and they’re all on display in “Edge of Glory” too. Blondie, “Rapture” : One of the earliest examples of the ethereal ’80s (it was released in 1981), the video follows Debbie Harry on a dream-like traipse through the streets of New York City, complete with guest appearances by Fab Five Freddy and a shuffling Uncle Sam (to name just a few). It makes no sense, because it’s not supposed to. Cyndi Lauper : Gaga’s good friend and, along with Madonna, perhaps the premier ’80s video star, Lauper’s classics — be they the good-natured rebellion of “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” or the moody, arty “True Colors” — both seem like spiritual successors to “Edge.” “Fame” : Epochal tale of performing-arts students living and loving in NYC during the early ’80s, it’s spirit and style have long influenced Gaga’s work. With its dance moves and dreamy, freedom-in-the-streets scenes, “Edge” is perhaps the best example of that. “Flashdance” : Prototypical “girl finds escape in dance ” film from 1983, it stars Jennifer Beals as a steelworker/dancer who dreams of a better life. Not only are the same sentiments echoed in “Edge,” but Gaga pays tribute to the film’s most memorable scene — where Beals reclines in a chair and is doused in water — by striking a similar pose outside her apartment building. George Michael : Before he became known for his various, uh, exploits, Michael was the biggest British pop star of the 1980s, and as such, he churned out some appropriately huge music videos. Two of his biggest — “Father Figure” and “Careless Whisper” — seem to have influenced Gaga with their gauzy, steamy portrayals of late-night life in the big city and, in the case of “Whisper,” that balls-out sax wailing. Michael Jackson : You can’t write anything about videos from the 1980s without mentioning MJ, who took the art form to rarely duplicated heights. Usually, his clips were fantastical things, but occasionally, he also got gritty, and it’s those moments (videos like “The Way You Make Me Feel” and “Billie Jean”) that seem to have stuck in Gaga’s mind. “Newsies” : The 1992 Disney musical is most notable for its initial “flop” status and its subsequent rebirth as a cult classic. It tells the story of newsboys on strike in New York City, and in classic scenes like Christian Bale’s performance of the song “Santa Fe,” it takes that struggle to the twisting fire escapes of the city. Sort of like “Edge of Glory,” really. “Rent” : Broadway retelling of Puccini’s “La boh

Tim Tebow Golf Pic: Ripped or a Rip-Off?

Tim Tebow has a lot of free time on his hands these days, as NFL players remain locked out. But how much time the Denver Broncoes quarterback has spent in the gym is the topic of online controversy today, as a friend of the athlete Tweeted a photo of Tebow at the practice range before a charity tournament at the St. Jude Classic golf tournament in Memphis. Holy muscular driving power, is the former Hesiman winner truly this ripped? Study the picture and decide: Is it real?

The Real Housewives of New York City Recap: The Epic Moroccan Trilogy Concludes

Tears. Lots of tears. That’s what happens when things spiral out of control between Jill and Ramona . It’s the aftermath of their battle as The Real Housewives of New York City continue their Moroccan adventure. THG’s +/- recap breaks it down: “That will be a day rotting in hell before I kiss that woman’s ass.” Jill cries. Jill’s upset but then Luann jumps in saying she won’t let that happen. Then she storms off to find Ramona. Minus 7 for taking sides without having been in the room. Alex describes Luann as acting as though she were watching the Christians being fed to the lions and although I was taken aback by the description, I can’t disagree with it. Luann reacts with a strange combination of judgement, condescension, and glee.

So You Think You Can Dance: Down to 20!

So You Think You Can Dance is down to its final 20. How did it arrive at that number? Read on for a review of last night’s two-hour episode… The Contemporary Dancers – Ricky, Miranda, and Melanie ended up as finalists. Of the three I loved Miranda’s face when Nigel said “bad news” and how quickly she changed when she found out she was in. The fourth space was filled by one of the Mallory sisters. Sasha (the skinny one) was in, but Natalia (the diabetic) was cut, yet remained supportive. Stacey Tookey Contemporary Routine – I’m usually upset when they use dry ice in performances, but there were enough leaps and the smoke moved around well with the dancers’ turns. I’m not sure what the story was, but the performance covered some good area. I assume that all four dancers were supposed to be as lost as the song exclaimed, but it was mostly flowing ripped clothing looking pretty. The Hip-Hop Dancers – With seven hip-hop dancers left and no females (because Hero, Patty Anne and Princess Lockaroo) got cut too early, the male contestants took all the glory. Chris made it through, after auditioning last season and having to dance for his life during the jive. Joining him were Wadi, Tadd, and Robert “Wooo” Taylor Jr. Sadly, we lost the vertically challenged Lil’ O and Professor “Indubitably” Lot. Dave Scott Hip-Hop Routine – The routine was a bit simple looking in the group choreography and the people didn’t look that synchronized. When the contestants got moments to have their solos, they shined. I worry for all four when they get paired up with a contemporary girl and give a ballroom routine. The Ballroom Dancers – It was a tough season for the ballroom dancers. Ivetta and Lenny were the only two left. Lenny was the only male ballroom dancer and he was probably confident that since he was the only male ballroom contestant he’d slide right through. Sadly, he was cut. Ivetta was the only hope and would have been her last chance to be on the show because of her age. She finally made it through. Jason Gilkinson Latin Routine – Since Ivetta was the sole Ballroom dancer, she was paired up with All-Star Pasha. I love a good Paso Doble and I was blown away. Not many of the dancers could stand next to Pasha outside of Anya (his partner) but Ivetta was the center of the dance. She flowed so elegantly and her toned legs looked amazing. The Contemporary/Jazz Dancers – Because this show can’t admit that it has just a whole ton of contemporary dancers, it uses the phrase “Jazz” as if makes a difference. I would have placed Sasha Mallory more in Jazz. We welcomed Clarisse and Marko. As for the naughty, female dancers, both Jordan and Missy made it in. Sonya Tayeh Jazz Routine – I missed Sonya’s choreography; it had that jazz spirit and the edginess. It seemed like Marko had a bit of an issue with a few of the lifts and I wasn’t sure it was because of the bullet in his arm or the fact that one of the girls looked heavier than the others. The “Other Male” Category – Jess and Nick were the lone representatives of Broadway and Tap, respectively. Jess was called out for being a bit cocky and a little uncomfortable in some of the other genres. Luckily for Nick, there was space for him as well. I guess with no Ballroom dancer, it was easier to say yes to the tapper. Christopher Scott Tap Routine – I’ve seen the “Rich Guy/Poor Guy” routines a lot before and the biggest issue I had was that the camera focused on only one dancer at a time in the beginning half of the performance. I was quite happy to see Jess doing some tap when I don’t think we were told he had any knowledge (Nigel hinted that four girls also knew Tap so we could actually see a tap routine during the competition). The Final Five Dancers – The judges were looking for three girls and two guys to fill in the spots. Caitlyn, who had star quality, was easily in. She was quickly followed by Ashley. Mitchell was nervous in front of the judges but was in. The final two girls were Ryan and Alexa; the two looked and acted like fake blonde twins. Alexander and Jeremiah were the last two males. Though both Jeremiah and Ryan were repeat contestants we followed last episode, Ryan was the only one to make it through. The final two were Alexander and Ryan. How do you feel about the top 20?

Miss USA Rima Fakih Criticzed For Alleged Partying

Stop us if you’ve heard this one, but Miss USA is under fire. Rima Fakih is not in crown-losing trouble … yet. But accusations of her “breaking the rules of conduct” have put The Tiara Patrol on high alert. According to Fox News (of course), Fakih was suspected of sneaking out (of where, it’s unclear) to party all night last week, then lying about it. The Miss Universe Organization, which rules over its gorgeous winners with an iron fist, requested security tapes to see if a cover-up occurred. “There was one night last week where [ Rima Fakih ] had some interviews the next day,” says Paula Shugart, the president of the ridiculous organization. “First we thought she wasn’t at the apartment (which she shares in NYC with Miss Universe), and someone was trying to get her to the interview.” “She was sound asleep, and looked like she’d been out all night.” Fakih did make the interviews, but her handlers are still asking about the security tapes, as this is “serious business,” especially after Tara Conner. Conner, of course, was the wild child who nearly lost the crown for her partying ways. Ultimately, Miss USA owner Donald Trump spared her. Unlike the Conner case, Shugart said there is absolutely no evidence to indicate any type of substance abuse problems in Rima’s situation. Nonetheless, Fakih was still made talk to Conner about the incident. Fakih will surrender her crown during the Miss USA Pageant June 20. Given the personal restrictions that come with the gig – you have to be on your best behavior, at all times – it might be a bit of a release. From day one, Fakih has been raising red flags within the organization. Right after her win, pics of her pole-dancing for a promotional event conducted by Detroit morning radio show “Mojo in the Morning” surfaced. But after some investigation by MUO, it was determined that she didn’t breach any moral code of conduct, and thus was not stripped of her sash. “We usually like to keep a handle on them,” Shugart tells Fox. “We have talent managers to keep track, and they are supposed to tell us when they go out.” “Rima is definitely a high spirited, fun person. If she went out that night it wouldn’t surprise us. … I don’t know if I’ll ever know where she went.” Sounds like an organization The Dictator would love. [Photo: WENN.com]
