Russell Brand Sets First Public Appearance Since Katy Perry Split

Brand will join Coldplay, Mumford & Sons, Jon Stewart at Amnesty International benefit. By James Montgomery Russell Brand Photo: Getty Images Russell Brand is set to make his first public appearance since filing for divorce from Katy Perry when he takes the stage at New York’s Radio City Music Hall as part of an Amnesty International benefit. Brand will perform alongside Coldplay, Mumford & Sons, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Reggie Watts and others at Amnesty International’s Secret Policeman’s Ball, a long-running celebration of free speech and comedy, set for March 4 at the venerable NYC venue. The event marks the first time the ball has been held in the U.S. and also is Brand’s first scheduled appearance since he and Perry split in December; the “California Gurls” hitmaker has already made a pair of public appearances, first filming an Adidas commercial earlier this month and then returning to the stage for a concert in Jakarta, Indonesia . Check out photos of Russell and Katy from happier times. In a video promoting a then-upcoming comedy tour of American colleges — which was shot in mid-November, before the couple announced their split — Brand was seen jokingly removing his wedding ring . To date, he’s yet to announce any additional appearances. According to

Kim Kardashian Actually Does Some Good

Reluktantly, we must give kredit where kredit is due: Kim Kardashian has donated $50,000 to The Trevor Project, an organization that provides suicide prevention assistance to lesbian, gay and bisexual teens. Kim raised those funds herself during a trip to the Cantor Fitzgerald offices in NYC last September, where she actually did some work on the trading floor. “The firm lost more than 600 employees in the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001 and on the 10th anniversary of the attacks, they donated all revenues from their trades to charities around the world,” Kardashian blogged soon after her visit. “I was honored to take part!” Darn her for saying something we cannot mock. Other celebrities involved in The Trevor Project include Kevin McHale, Daniel Radcliffe, Adam Lambert and Kathy Griffin.

Sundance Diary: Stephen Frears and Spike Lee Stumble, Stymie with Sundance Selections

Coming to Sundance with new films in the Premieres section, both Stephen Frears and Spike Lee were navigating new terrain, a pair of established directors seeking distribution for their independent features. Frears’ betting memoir/dramedy Lay the Favorite went first, premiering to dismal reviews Saturday night. Lee’s Red Hook Summer , a hotly anticipated entry that brings him back to his Brooklyn wheelhouse after the underperforming WWII pic Miracle at St. Anna , followed Sunday, drawing mixed initial reactions from Twittering press. The Frears, as I shall call it, should turn out to be the bigger critical fail of the two. Based on Beth Raymer’s book detailing her experience in the world of sports betting, it’s an annoyingly bright, tone-deaf character comedy-drama built around a ditzy young stripper (Rebecca Hall) who finds she’s good at running numbers and becomes a betting agent in Vegas under veteran Bruce Willis; when the attraction between them complicates things, Beth strikes out on her own and, through a series of near-felony crimes and poor decisions, learns to grow up, kinda. It’s a shame that Hall, one of the best actresses to emerge of late, is stuck putting on one of the most grating voices and personalities in recent memory here. Transformed into a daisy dukes-wearing, hair-twirling, ditzy coquette who speaks in a breathy prattle, she comes off like a selfish, immature savant in a stripper’s body. On the flip side, Willis does nice work as Beth’s married, simpatico boss Dink, and Frank Grillo and Wayne Pére breeze in to perk up the proceedings as assistant bettors, though Vince Vaughn ratchets the manic energy to 11 as a rival agent. But Frears is too enamored of his colorful cast of zany characters — including a trophy wife played by Catherine Zeta-Jones, Laura Prepon sporting a turrrible Southern drawl, and Joshua Jackson as the only normal character in the film — to realize how little we care about most of them. I watched a dozen people around me walk out during the film’s premiere. Since this is Sundance this could’ve meant nothing, since they might have been buyers doing their thing. But if they hadn’t been, if they had been regular festival-goers who simply valued their time too much to finish the film, I wouldn’t have been surprised. Either way, I kind of wish I’d joined them. This was not quite the case for Spike Lee’s Red Hook Summer , however (which I see Monday morning with the Press & Industry crowd). Word following Sunday’s premiere was sharply divided, with reactions ranging from praise-filled (“Spike Lee’s RED HOOK SUMMER is a passionate, painful love letter to Brooklyn, NYC, black America & the black church, Tweeted Salon’s Andrew O’Hehir . “Very special movie.”) to derisive (“…one of the worst movies to ever premiere at #sundance,” declared ComingSoon’s Ed Douglas ). Some, like CinemaBlend’s Katey Rich, expressed a need to deliberate further before passing judgment: “Already regretting instant Red Hook Summer reaction. I need more time to let it settle. Forget everything I said!” Stay tuned to Movieline’s Sundance coverage for more on Red Hook Summer and Spike Lee. Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Heidi Klum-Seal Divorce May Not Be a Done Deal … Yet

Yesterday, reports surfaced that Heidi Klum and Seal split and are headed for divorce court, with an official filing to come as soon as Monday morning. No separation has occurred, however, and now, a new report suggests reports of the marriage’s demise may be premature and they’re not divorcing … yet. “They’ve been fighting a lot and it’s been rough lately, but they have no plans to announce a split right now,” a source tells People . “They’re not divorcing.” According to the insider, in recent months, increased distance and time apart has tested the famously affectionate pair, who have four young children together. On tour to promote his new album, Soul 2, Seal recently flew solo to NYC to appear on The Late Show with David Letterman , then to London for commitments. Back together at their Brentwood, Calif., home on Saturday, “they seem to be doing a lot better,” the source adds. “They’re both wearing their wedding bands.” The long distance strains are likely to continue, though. Seal is due to appear this week on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Tavis Smiley , all of which tape in and around Los Angeles. Klum, meanwhile is expected to travel to Germany soon to promote the seventh season of Germany’s Next Top Model , which premieres February 23. [Photo: WENN.com]

Van Halen Return With New Single ‘Tattoo’

Band premieres first single with frontman David Lee Roth in nearly 16 years, and yes, it rocks. By James Montgomery Van Halen’s David Lee Roth Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Van Halen didn’t play “Tattoo” — their first single with frontman David Lee Roth in something like 16 years — during last week’s free-wheeling, free-spirited (and free-booze-fueled) club show in New York City, and it’s sort of a shame. It would’ve fit in rather nicely alongside the massive Carter/Reagan-era smashes they did work into the set. Don’t get me wrong, “Tattoo” isn’t on par with the likes of “Runnin’ With the Devil,” “Everybody Wants Some!!” or “Panama,” but it’s cast from the same mold: huge riffs, huger backbeat, hangar-sized chorus, soaring vocal harmonies (thought it’s certainly weird to see Eddie Van Halen’s son filling Michael Anthony’s role in that regard) and a killer guitar solo. Diamond Dave even gets to do one of his patented talking bits. But perhaps most importantly, in keeping with grand Van Halen tradition, it doesn’t try to be anything more than a Sterno-grade party starter. “Tattoo” isn’t really about politics or religion or really even feelings (except for maybe the part where Roth sings about his uncle being in the union). Instead, it is entirely about, well, tattoos. Of all shapes and sizes. Or, as Roth puts it, “Sexy dragon magic!” And really, what else needs to be said? At the very least, “Tattoo” is miles better than the last two songs the band recorded with Roth, “Me Wise Magic” and “Can’t Get This Stuff No More,” from 1996’s Best Of Volume 1. And when compared to the other “new” song Van Halen premiered during Thursday’s Caf
