‘Devil Inside’ Advance Screenings Draw Passionate Reactions

Fans report being terrified, but some critics tweet about audiences booing at film’s conclusion. By Kevin Sullivan, with additional reporting by Matt Elias Bonnie Morgan in “The Devil Inside” Photo: Paramount “The Devil Inside,” the latest entry in the found-footage genre, screened Thursday night for special sneak-preview audiences and had the crowds screaming for two very different reasons. Some of the audience members, like Adam Geldres, found themselves shaken up after the screening; Geldres insisted that it was “one of the scariest movies [he’s] seen.” Ashlei Lien felt the same way. After the screening, she told MTV News and said, “I don’t even want to pray, because I’m scared because in the movie he prays …” but she couldn’t finish her thought. The film, which follows a young woman as she travels to Rome to meet with her possessed and dangerous mother, garnered passionate reactions across the board, but Twitter told a different story than the viewers we caught up with after the screening. Passion is not always positive. Soon after the advance screenings ended, critics, who were also in attendance, took to Twitter to share the reactions many of them witnessed. Many reported booing at separate screenings as soon as the film ended. Drew McWeeny from HitFix ( @DrewAtHitFix ) shared his experience from a regular midnight showing. “Wow. ‘The Devil Inside’ is a big ol’ burn. Active booing in the (sold-out) theater tonight.” El Mayimbe from Latino Review ( @elmayimbe ) said that audiences were even more hostile at one New York screening. “Audience at NYC screening were ready to kill the filmmakers if they were in attendance. So they took it out on poor ushers.” SPOILER ALERT The controversy stemmed from the film’s ending, which comes abruptly and, as many people claim, arbitrarily. A title on the screen then directs fans to a website to find out more. For The Stans: Is Baby Bump Bey Planning On Delivering Her Hump Full Of Camel In Houston This Week???

Y’all knew we couldn’t get too deep into this new year before folks got back to speculating about the goings ons of Beyonce’s uterus . A man claiming to be an employee of a Houston-area medical center called local radio station 97.9 The Box this morning, claiming to have the secret details about the upcoming birth of little Jayonce Dereona Tiana-May Brooklyn Knowles-Carter. I’m just letting you guys know that [while] a lot of people are saying, “Well, Beyonce’s having her baby in New York,” no. She’s having it right here in Houston. Everybody’s thinking it’s New York, that’s why they got so upset: they don’t know the real story. She’s having it here, close to her mom. Asked when Beyonce was scheduled to deliver, the caller replied: One day this week. It’s probably Friday. But she flew in yesterday. Why would she have it in New York? She’s from Houston, her mother’s here, her family’s here… duh! Sounds good. Too bad we know for a fact, thanks to some thirsty Brooklyn restaurateurs that Beyonce was definitely in NYC on New Year’s Eve. And if she was ready to deliver this Friday, as in tomorrow, as in 7 days after being spotted in New York, there isn’t an airline, pilot or doctor on this planet that would have allowed her to fly. We wonder what other outlandish-ness we’ll hear before this little girl is born… Source More On Bossip! 106 And Counting: A History Of Men That “ALLEGEDLY” Chopped Down Rocsi’s Thicky Thick Thighs Don’t Fall Far From The Tree: Famous Kids That Look JUST LIKE Their Famous Parents Caught Creepin’??? ‘Red Tails,’ ‘Contraband’ Lead January Movie Releases

‘The Devil Inside,’ ‘Beauty and the Beast 3-D’ and ‘The Grey’ also arrive this month. By Kara Warner Mark Wahlberg and Ben Foster in “Contraband” Photo: Universal Pictures As far as excitement for brand-new movie releases goes, January is not a month film fanatics expect to deliver them major blockbusters, award contenders or other assorted cinematic events. The first month of the year falls into one of two seasons of studio dumping grounds: the late summer and winter months during which movie studios typically unveil their most forgettable fare. There are exceptions, of course, and being the optimistic movie fans we are, we always hold out hope. Without further ado, here’s a rundown of January’s new releases and our guesses at their box-office potential. January 6 The lone new release this week is “The Devil Inside,” an R-rated thriller that revolves around a daughter’s quest to find out the truth behind her mother’s institutionalization. Is she mentally ill or demonically possessed? Our guess is a little bit of both. Fun fact: Director/editor Brent Bell and producer Matt Peterman shot the movie guerrilla/ found-footage style, making the film almost entirely outside the studio system on a shoestring budget. Prediction : Horror fans, particularly those who made “Paranormal Activity 3” a $100 million box-office success story , will flock to this one. January 13 The second week of the month pits an action flick vs. two family-friendly films, only one of which is actually “new.” “Contraband” is an action thriller about a retired smuggler (Mark Wahlberg) who has to return to his criminal ways in order to save his family from harm. Think “Gone in 60 Seconds” set in New Orleans with smugglers instead of car thieves. In contrast, “Joyful Noise” has all the elements of a schmaltzy warm fuzzy. A small-town church choir struggles to find its “joyful” voice when its directors (Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton) clash over methods for how the choir can beat the odds and win a national competition. Finally, Disney will release its revamped 3-D version of 1992 Best Picture Oscar nominee “Beauty and the Beast.” Prediction : The NFL playoffs might keep the “Contraband” target audience at home, leaving the family-friendly flicks to dominate the box office. “Beauty and the Beast” will take the weekend. Latifah and Parton’s movie magnetism are no match for the “tale as old as time.” January 20 The latter half of the month is all about action and intrigue. January 20 marks the release of the George Lucas-produced “Red Tails,” the first Lucasfilm production since 1994’s “Radioland Murders” that is not associated with the “Indiana Jones” or “Star Wars” franchises. The film is based on the true story of a group of African-American pilots, commonly referred to as the Tuskegee Airmen, who served in World War II. “Underworld: Awakening,” the fourth film in the franchise, was shot in 3-D with fancy new Red Epic digital cameras and takes place after “Underworld: Evolution”; Kate Beckinsale reprises her role as former Death Dealer Selene. Finally, “Haywire” features MMA fighter-turned-actress Gina Carano as a black ops super soldier double-crossed in the line of duty who then sets out to exact revenge on those who betrayed her. Prediction : This one’s a tossup. We’re giving the edge to “Tails” for its PG-13 rating, the “based on a true story” factor and the slightly broader appeal that comes with it. January 27 It’s the star-studded heist thriller “Man on a Ledge” vs. the Liam Neeson-led survival thriller “The Grey,” vs. “One for the Money,” based on Janet Evanovich’s best-seller of the same name. Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Anthony Mackie, Jamie Bell, Ed Harris and Ed Burns give “Ledge” an edge in star power, adding intrigue to a film that seems to be a fun twist on the typical heist formula. “Grey” holds appeal for the man vs. man, man vs. nature, man vs. animal aspects. “One for the Money” will definitely draw book clubs and fans of star/producer Katherine Heigl. Prediction : Shooting for the moon and solely because we believe in the power of Liam Neeson’s post-“Taken” and “Unknown” bankability, our money is on “The Grey” to edge out “Ledge” and “Money.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Nick Jonas Opens Up About Move To NYC For ‘How To Succeed’

Middle Jonas Brother tells MTV News the Big Apple ‘is unlike anywhere in the world.’ By Jocelyn Vena Nick Jonas Photo: MTV News Nick Jonas kicks off his rehearsals for his starring role in “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying” this week. The role means that the singer/actor has relocated to the Big Apple for his run in the hit Broadway show. But, Nick is no New York newbie, having previously starred in several other musicals. And, he admits that he’s excited to get back into a New York state of mind. “Favorite thing about New York? I think the fact that it’s all here all on this island — well in Manhattan, at least — and it’s just an amazing city,” he told MTV News. “The energy here is unlike anywhere in the world, and so many creative and talented people in this city and so many people that are passionate about theater and the arts and the things I’m really passionate about. Being around those people inspires me in so many ways. I think it’s one of those places that you have to live in once in your life and I’m blessed to be here.” Jonas will pick up where both “Harry Potter” himself, Daniel Radcliffe, and “Glee” star Darren Criss left off as the show’s very own J. Pierrepont Finch . And in the weeks leading up to his opening night on January 24, Nick plans on not only rehearsing, but also carving out a place for himself in NYC. “I think I’m really looking forward to setting up my world here,” the 19-year-old New Jersey native explained. “I’ve had the opportunity, this last year spending more time in L.A. and being based there primarily, to kind of build a community of friends and have that whole atmosphere. And I hope to do the same here and hopefully have my friends come out and visit me here.” For Nick’s L.A. friends wondering if he’ll have any time for you now that he’s on the East Coast, he’s got this message for you: “I’ve got a guest bedroom, so I’ll be able to have some friends over to stay.”

Mourn Universal Studios’ Jaws Ride With This Helpful Video

Happy New Year! Especially if you’re among the maintenance crew members at Universal Studios Hollywood Orlando, where you will never again have to take to the murky waters of the Jaws ride to fix the perennially broken mechanical shark: The attraction honoring Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster closed for good on Monday. Revisit the experience in better — i.e. functioning — days with an epic new video. I don’t remember the ride ever being this theatrical. Guns? Explosions? Boat drivers who look like they honed their acts in Friday the 13th: The Musical ? I also haven’t set foot in that theme park in about 25 years, so you tell me. In any case, R.I.P., Bruce the Shark. You were a worthy adversary, at least when you worked. [via Inside the Magic ]

Happy New Year — and Good Riddance to the Five Worst Movie Trends of 2011

Not to be terribly negative at the start of the new year – because any year that gifted us the Fassboner had to be a pretty good year, amirite? – but there were a handful of recurring trends in the movies of 2011 that could stand a rest as we charge ahead through 2012. First let’s list the good ones, the motifs in otherwise disparate films, from a wide range of filmmakers indie and studio-backed, new and established, that were actually kind of awesome to marinate in this past year. (Goslingmania comin’ atcha!) THE BEST MOVIE TRENDS OF 2011 Cars that go vroom ( Drive , Fast Five , Drive Angry , Senna , Cars 2 , Bellflower ) 2011 was a great year for gearheads – hell, Fast Five pretty much made the year, and it came out way back in April. Even if you can’t tell a tire iron from a lugnut, the cars of 2011 were pretty damn exciting to watch; look no further than the quivering mass of mechanical muscle that is the Mother Medusa from Bellflower for the single sexiest car-that-might-as-well-be-a-character of the year. Emo manly men ( Drive , Warrior , Fast Five , Shame ) Few things brought me as much joy in 2011 as the sight of hot, often burly grown men weeping, or at least near tears. Or, at least, you know, feeling stuff. And preferably shirtless. Sometimes with a partner of the same sex. The grand prixe of 2011 in this category goes to Warrior ’s Tom Hardy, who hulked OUT and tapped his inner feral child, all hurt and lonely and in glorious, glorious pain. Planet Terror ( Another Earth , Melancholia , Tree of Life , Apollo 18 ) Galactic dramarama, man. It never feels quite like the world is coming to an end like it does when the world is literally coming to an end. And alternately, as in Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life , the cosmos and the wonderment that is creation itself can be so terrifyingly awe-inspiring when you sit down and think about it… and think about it… and think about it. Unless you’re watching some alien attack bullshit on the moon. Forget that noise. All Things Ryan Gosling ( Drive , Ides of March , Crazy, Stupid, Love. , “Hey Girl,” NYC Street Fight) What can I say? He’s the coolest motherfucker in the world. He breaks up stranger danger street brawls, for goodness sake. He takes Eva Mendes to Disneyland! And to think, it all started down on the soundstages of The Mickey Mouse Club … Relationships, They’re Hard and Stuff ( Bellflower , Young Adult , A Separation , Like Crazy , One Day , Crazy, Stupid, Love. ) Sure, we’ll never see an end to movies about relationships. I mean, duh. But in 2011 we got a surprising batch of tales about love, falling in love, and the crazy batshit insane things we do for it. Forget the craptastic rom-coms and bad studio “relationship” comedies of the year ( The Change-Up , Something Borrowed , anything starring Sarah Jessica Parker or Katherine Heigl — and especially New Year’s Eve , which starred both Sarah Jessica Parker and Katherine Heigl). And let the two near-identically named Facebook generation rom-coms of the year ( Friends with Benefits , No Strings Attached ) pass. They meant you no harm. Now go straight to the smaller films that dropped the sometimes blissful, often painful real talk about romance, and cry a good cry: Like Crazy , Bellflower , A Separation , Young Adult . Hell, even The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has something to say about crushing on your coworkers. Honorable mentions: Animal heroes ( Buck, Project Nim, Rise of the Planet of the Apes , Rango ), ass-kicking heroines ( Colombiana, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Hanna , Sucker Punch ), problem children ( We Need to Talk About Kevin, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 , Beautiful Boy ) Now for the worst movie trends of 2011…
