Is the Stop-and-Frisk policy anything more than a racial profiling tool being used to criminalize minorities? A silent march by thousands of people in New York City protesting police “stop-and-frisk” tactics on Sunday was punctuated by an explosion of loud voices. “We’ve got to fight back, we can’t be silent!” a group of activists shouted as they passed the home of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, just off Fifth Avenue. Critics say the NYPD’s practice of stopping, questioning and searching people who police consider suspicious is illegal and humiliating to thousands of law-abiding blacks and Hispanics. Last year, the NYPD stopped more than 685,000 people, mostly black and Hispanic young men — up from about 97,000 a decade earlier, according to the New York Civil Liberties Union, which also was to join the march. About half of those stopped are frisked, and about 10 percent are arrested. “In most cities, when you ask who gets beaten up by the cops, the answer comes back: black people, people of color, and the gay community,” Benjamin Jealous, head of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said on MSNBC. Jealous said that “the notion that this make us safer really defies logic,” noting that other large cities have cut their crime rate without resorting to stop-and-frisk methods. Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly defend the policy, saying the program keeps guns off New York streets and helps stop crime before it happens. Speaking at a Christian cultural center on Sunday in Brooklyn, Bloomberg said he is working with police to ensure that people are treated respectfully when they are stopped. “I cannot in good conscience walk away from work that I know will save the lives of so many of our brothers and sisters, and I will not,” the mayor said. It’s about time someone brought these criminals to justice… A day after a Huffington Post blogger and NYPD gadfly Len Levitt wrote a post alleging that the New York City Police Department planted spies inside the Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network headquarters in Harlem, Sharpton has threatened to sue the city. According to Levitt, the NYPD also has allegedly tried in the past to discredit Sharpton by spreading rumors that he is gay. In the post, Levitt, a veteran police reporter and author, alleges that an NYPD informant was inserted inside NAN headquarters to gather information about any large-scale protests being planned in response to the acquittal of police officers involved in the killing of Sean Bell, an unarmed black man who was killed just hours before his wedding. But perhaps the most shocking claims made in Levitt’s post are those around an NYPD plot to discredit Sharpton by spreading rumors, beginning in the ’80s, that he was homosexual. According to Levitt, “Two undercover police officers who spied on black protest groups in the 1980s told this reporter in 1998 that the department was so intent on discrediting Sharpton that they were tasked by their superiors to spread rumors that he was homosexual.” This is some isht they used to do to Malcolm X. SMH… These cops are buggin’ with all the West Indian Day Parade yang they were talkin on Facebook! Posters on Facebook who identified themselves as cops called participants in the Brooklyn West Indian Day parade “animals” and “savages” in a series of offensive entries that triggered an NYPD probe Monday. “Let them kill each other,” wrote one Facebook member who posted comments under a cop’s name, according to The New York Times. “I say have the parade one more year and when they all gather drop a bomb and wipe them all out,” wrote another, who said he was a police officer. NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said Monday he would refer the matter to the department’s Internal Affairs Bureau. The Facebook comments were posted for several days in September but have since been taken down. Those who posted comments said they were angered at being assigned to the parade. They apparently used real names, in keeping with Facebook policy, and some identified themselves as officers. One of the writers identified himself as Nick Virgilio, a police officer. Contacted by the Daily News, Virgilio denied making derogatory comments and suggested that his Facebook account had been used without his knowledge. “I tried to reach out to Facebook because I’ve had problems with people going on there who wrote things that I had nothing to do with,” he said. “This happened a couple of times, most recently several months ago.” Virgilio declined to reveal where in the department he works or whether he was assigned to the parade. Lawyers Benjamin Moore and Paul Lieberman used the Facebook diatribes in their defense of Tyrone Johnson, who was acquitted of gun possession charges last month. The lawyers found that the Facebook profile of the arresting officer, Sgt. Dustin Edwards, showed he belonged to a group formed for “N.Y.P.D. officers who are threatened by superiors and forced to be victims themselves.” Edwards could not be reached for comment. The NYPD bars officers from making “discourteous or disrespectful remarks” about race or ethnicity. The parade, an annual Labor Day weekend event, has been marred by episodes of violence. “It’s a scheduled riot,” one poster said, according to The Times. What the hell???
