Biden Wrong: June Data Shows 125,000 Lost Jobs, But Media Still Ignore Failure of Stimulus

The June jobs report was released July 2 showing a tiny decline in the unemployment rate to 9.5 percent, but a depressing 125,000 overall non-farm payroll jobs lost . CNN’s “American Morning” reacted with an appropriately downbeat report, but the onscreen chyron led with the better news — showing the lower unemployment rate rather than the job losses. Christine Romans also pointed out that it was the “best unemployment rate since July 2009,” though later in the segment she admitted the rate is still “horrible.” NBC’s Ann Curry offered a very brief report on the jobs data on “Today,” also highlighting the lowest unemployment rate “since last July.” The report also contradicted Vice President Joe Biden’s predictions of 100,000 to 200,000 jobs gained each month for the rest of 2010. This month, Biden is off by about 275,000 jobs On June 2, Obama declared the U.S. economy was “moving in the right direction.” The same day, Vice President Biden predicted 100,000 to 200,000 jobs would be created each month through 2010. That prediction,if it came true, would fall 5.2 million jobs short of Obama’s promise that the stimulus package would create more than 4 million jobs by the end of 2010. As of July 2, adding June job losses puts Obama more than 5.3 million jobs away from his promise. “American Morning,” “Today” and the immediate reaction on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” to the June numbers all ignored the failure of Obama’s economic stimulus packages. The federal government has thrown billions (the $787 billion stimulus package, not to mention Cash for Clunkers, the Big Three bailout and other measures) at the economy in an attempt to reverse the course of the recession and generate jobs, yet the unemployment rate still stands at 9.5 percent. But the news media have yet to retract their support for government spending. “American Morning” host Kiran Chetry mentioned other bad economic news and then repeated liberal New York Times columnist Paul Krugman who warned on June 28 that without additional stimulus the U.S. would go into a ” third depression .” “Some like Paul Krugman who say, if we pull back on stimulus and spending right now — austerity measures aren’t necessarily working in Europe — we’re going to be in more trouble,” Chetry said. Over on MSNBC Savannah Guthrie was also concerned that the recovery might not be able to “hold on” without further stimulus: “I think the real issue is, as some of these stimulus programs expire, for example the Cash for Clunkers or the housing tax credit that people were getting, as soon as those stimulus measures are taken away it seems that everything collapses,” Guthrie said. “So I think the question for economists and the question that the White House struggles with is: Where is the organic growth? And with Congress in no mood to do anything in the way of stimulus, any further stimulus, what do you do? Can this recovery hold on?” The reports continued the media’s unwillingness to remind viewers of President Obama’s promises about the stimulus package. When Obama was selling his massive spending proposal, the administration claimed the package would keep unemployment from rising about 8 percent. The news media have consistently ignored the failure of the stimulus to fulfill that pledge. On June 4 the news media spun the May unemployment report by emphasizing the Census jobs that “led to the biggest jump in jobs in ten years.” Like this article? The NYT’s Skewed View: Liberal Newsweek ‘Strives to Be Apolitical," Far-Left Daily Kos Just a ‘Political Blog’

Tw o stories in Thursday’s New York Times featured the paper avoiding pinning liberal labels on two media organs: the liberal newsmagazine Newsweek and the far-left political blog Daily Kos. Reporter Jeremy Peters insisted in Thursday’s Business Day that the left-leaning magazine Newsweek was “apolitical,” yet easily spotted a right tilt in two potential purchasers of the struggling weekly: ” 2 Suitors for Newsweek Are Said to Be Ruled Out .” A photo caption made the easily refutable claim that Newsweek “strives to be apolitical.” The Washington Post is looking for a bidder who will be a good fit for the magazine, which strives to be apolitical. Really now? As Nathan Burchfiel at NewsBusters reminds us: “Newsweek has attacked Tea Parties and conservative leaders like Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh , earned praise from gay marriage activists for its coverage, launched pro-atheism attacks on religious figures like Mother Teresa, among numerous other liberal positions.” Peters gave Newsweek’s editors the benefit of the doubt on its liberal slant, which even Washington Post media reporter Howard Kurtz believes is an accurate view: The ideas that Newsweek is promoting are mainly left-of-center….When Newsweek put a conservative’s essay on the cover, it was by David Frum, assailing Rush Limbaugh under the headline ‘Why Rush Is Wrong.’ And when Newsweek took on Obama, it did so from the left, in a piece built around New York Times columnist Paul Krugman and his criticism of the president’s economic policies. Peters was able to see conservatism and libertarianism in the two rejected buyers, but not the clear liberalism at Newsweek. With no shortage of interested parties, the issue for the Post Company has become whether it can find a new owner that the company’s chairman and chief executive, Donald E. Graham, believes will be a suitable steward for the magazine. That is the main reason the Post Company decided not to entertain offers from Newsmax or Mr. Ritchie, according to these people. The conservative political ideology of Newsmax’s chief executive, Christopher Ruddy, is at odds with the editorial bent of Newsweek, which strives to be apolitical in its news coverage though is often criticized as left-leaning. And Mr. Ritchie, who unsuccessfully tried to buy the Sun Times Media Group last year, is viewed as more libertarian in his political views . He has explored creating a third political party in Illinois with supporters of Ross Perot. Also on Thursday, reporter Joseph Plambeck had every opportunity to identify Daily Kos as a far-left blog in ” Politics Blog Questions Polling Data It Had Used ,” but failed to do so.  Political junkies are fascinated by the emerging brawl between Markos Moulitsas, founder of the far-left campaign blog Daily Kos, and the polling firm Research 2000, which has been providing him with encouraging data for Democrats and slams of Republican voters as racist and conspiratorial. Moulitsas is accusing the Maryland company of having “fabricated or manipulated” polling results, based on statistical analysis done by three of his readers. The political blog Daily Kos said Tuesday that it could not trust the data it has used in its weekly poll featured prominently at the top of the Web site, raising questions for the second time in a year about the veracity of a widely used polling company. Markos Moulitsas Zúniga, the founder of Daily Kos, said in a post that an analysis done by three readers shows “quite convincingly” that the polling data provided each week to the blog by the widely used polling company, Research 2000, was “likely bunk.” The weekly poll has been published since January 2009. He is planning to sue the company for breach of contract and misrepresentation. The Times has cited Research 2000’s data in several news stories but has not commissioned polling from the group itself. More significantly, liberal columnist Charles Blow used the firm’s research to mock Republicans as conspiracists in his August 8, 2009 column . Plambeck returned again to Moulitas (in a concluding paragraph that didn’t make the print edition) touting “his blog’s success” and portraying Kos, who notoriously dismissed with an obscene phrase the brutal murders of four civilian contractors in Iraq, as a newly discerning data-miner. Mr. Moulitsas said that because of his blog’s success, there are other polling organizations willing to work with him, adding that he will require them to provide all of the raw data. “I’m not getting out of the polling game,” Mr. Moulitsas said. “I eat it. I breathe it. The last thing I want to do is see the demise of polling. I don’t know what I’d write about.”

MSNBC’s Witt: ‘I Got Chills’ Listening To Obama Immigration Speech

When it comes to Barack Obama, MSNBC is the network of thrills and chills . . . Chris Matthews famously felt a thrill going up his leg listening to an Obama speech. Now, MSNBC anchor Alex Witt has been similarly moved by Obamian oratory, declaring this morning “I got a few chills” listening to PBO’s “very powerful” speech on immigration. Witt described her sensations to MSNBC DC bureau chief Mark Whitaker. ALEX WITT: You know, Mark, I gotta say I got a few chills listening to him there. It was very powerful. But it was also pretty heavy on detail and direction.

WaPo Slams BP Spending, Accepts $455K in Full-Page Ads

The Washington Post and BP may seem like the oddest couple since Felix and Oscar, but they’ve been spending a lot of time – and money – together. A Business & Media Institute study found that the Washington Post earned up to $455,652 on 17 BP ads during the month of June, or about $15,188.40 per day. All 17 ads were a full page in size, nine appeared on the back page, six ran in color, and three ran on Sundays. In short, that’s a fairly high-end ad campaign. However, companies typically receive discounts off of the open rate for large ad buys or for long-term contracts, so that final total may well be lower. BMI analyzed all 30 issues of the Post in the month of June and calculated the rates using the Post’s 2010 General Ad Rates Position Premiums . Based on the position premiums, a back page ad costs $28,954 daily ($31,456 on Sundays), ads on pages A2, A3, and A5 cost $208 daily ($216) per column inch, and other specified pages cost $103 daily ($110) per column inch. full page ad is 6 x 21 inches or 126 inches. BP back page ads totaled $260,586 and the Sunday ads, which appeared on pages A5 and A15 respectively, totaled $103,716, with color costs included in premium pricing. While advertising is the lifeblood for newspapers, it’s ironic that the Post has earned so much money from a company it has criticized over the past month, including their most recent June 30 story about BP’s corporate contributions. While reporter Carol D. Leonnig fretted about BP spending $112,000 on the national election cycle, her employer received over four times as much in one month, and BP nearly spent that much in the Sunday ads alone. Furthermore, Leonning griped about the $4.8 million BP spent over seven years. There are 84 months in seven years, which means BP spent $57,142.86 per month in corporate contributions, nearly eight times less than what it spent in one month on Washington Post ads. The media gleefully reported President Obama’s anger at BP’s new ad campaign and if BP spent this much money advertising with a conservative publication, the media may well have played the Republican-big-business-connection card. While the Post has a history of liberal positions, including being anti-business and advocating everything from Value-Added Taxes (VAT) to gay rights and environmentalism . But when it comes to earning money, the Post is laughing all the way to the bank.

Most in Media Ignore Blago Characterizing Obama: ‘More Tony’d Up Than I Am’

Maybe it’s the sheer joy of celebrating recovery summer along with The Anointed One and Plugs Biden.  Perhaps they’re just Blagoed out. Whatever the reason, most of the mainstream media failed to report something intriguing said by the usually most quotable former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.  From an FBI tape recorded last November and appearing on Fox Chicago News’s Web site , Blagojevich spoke of president-elect Barack Obama: BLAGOJEVICH I thin-, you know, it’s really, I get that I’m a big boy and I can handle that, but it’s really f***ing galling, this guy is more Tony’d up than I am. And it’s almost like they f***ing conspi-, made a concerted effort and they got the Chicago media to f***ing make me wear Rezko more. To f***ing dilute it from him. Blago’s disillusionment with Obama stemmed from a rebuff conveyed by a Service Employees International Union (SEIU) official used by the president-elect to let the Gov know of Obama’s interest in Valerie Jarrett filling his Senate seat. Blago makes for good copy and the mainstream media have rarely missed a chance to quote him.  Yet in this instance, they took a powder.  It’s not as though they’re unaware of the Obama-Rezko connection. In 2006, Obama told the Chicago Sun-Times he’d known Tony Rezko for years, having lunch with him probably once or twice a year. When Obama decided to buy a $1.65 million mansion in Chicago, he approached Rezko who “developed an interest” and purchased adjoining land. The closing on the properties took place the same day. The Obamas paid $300,000 less than the asking price; the Rezkos paid the full price. A few months later, Obama, wanting to increase the size of his backyard, bought a strip of Rezko’s property for $104,500. As the Sun-Times story noted: “The transaction occurred at a time when it was widely known Tony Rezko was under investigation by U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald and as other Illinois politicians befriended by Rezko distanced themselves from him.” Possibly Obama was indeed “more Tony’d up” than Blagojevich.  Yet almost no news outlets found Blagojevich’s description, made when he was unaware of being recorded, newsworthy.  Just a coincidence no doubt.

Chris Matthews Highlighted Faulty Daily Kos/Research 2000 Poll on Hardball

With the news that Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitsas is suing the polling group Research 2000 for providing “bunk” results that his Web site published, the question has to be asked: Will those figures in the media who’ve advanced Daily Kos poll results, like MSNBC’s Hardball host Chris Matthews, let their viewers know of the suspect data? Back on the February 2, 2010 edition of Hardball, Matthews as part of his Sideshow segment, alerted viewers to the results of “a wild new poll of Republicans” that showed 58 percent of them didn’t believe or weren’t sure that Barack Obama was born in the U.S. and 64 percent of GOPers agreed or weren’t sure that the President was a “racist who hates white people.” Matthews granted the poll so much credence he cited Research 2000’s discovery that 68 percent of its Republican respondents wanted Obama impeached as that day’s “Big Number.” The following is from the “Sideshow” segment aired during the February 2 edition of Hardball: CHRIS MATTHEWS: Next, a wild new poll of Republicans came out. It’s conducted by Research 2000 and sponsored by the progressive blog Daily Kos. Catch these figures. Fifty-eight percent of Republicans polled say no or not sure when asked if President Obama was born in the U.S. Whoa! Seventy-nine percent say yes or no or not sure, rather, to the question of whether he’s a socialist. Sixty-four percent, about two-thirds, say yes or not sure on if the President’s a racist who hates white people. And 57 percent of Republicans say yes or not sure on whether he wants the terrorists to win. And here’s the wildest number of them all, tonight’s Hardball “Big Number.” How many Republicans in this poll think President Obama should be impeached? Sixty-eight percent said yes or not sure to the question of whether Barack Obama should be impeached now. I guess, if you think the guy’s an illegal immigrant, you figure he’s got to be impeached. Sixty-eight percent of Republicans say either yes or not sure on impeachment on this president. Tonight’s hard-to-fathom “Big Number.”

Farrakhan blames Jews for financial ruin of blacks

http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/nation/nation-of-islam-leader-farrakhan-accuse… Farrakhan is a vulture, a vampire who drains the life out of the very people he claims to lead. He destroys and makes a meal of his own people. And he in no way represents decent, hardworking Black America. Imagine if the American black community had the leadership of Martin Luther King instead of this devil who wants to keep his people uneducated, dependent, angry anti-individualists and anti-capitalists. He is the worst kind of demagogue, sacrificing his own to advance his own evil ambitions. And Obama counts him as a friend. A White House in decay. Martin Luther King would spit in the face of Louis Farrakhan and kick him to the curb where he belongs with the rest of the filth. Perhaps this is the only way for a soulless, evil wannabee to get his sullied name into the papers. Farrakhan claims Jews for centuries have worked to financially undermine Black people. The Washington Examiner via Gateway Disgusting. Radical Nation of Islam Leader Louis Farrakhan sent a letter to Jewish leaders asking them to repair the damage they have caused blacks for centuries. The Washington Examiner reported: Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan has written the leaders of more than a dozen major U.S. Jewish groups and denominations seeking “repair of my people from the damage” he claims Jews have caused blacks for centuries. Farrakhan sent the letter along with two books from the Nation of Islam Historical Research Team that the 77-year-old minister said prove “an undeniable record of Jewish Anti-Black behavior,” starting with the slave trade and Jim Crow laws. “We could charge you with being the most deceitful so-called friend, while your history with us shows you have been our worst enemy,” he wrote. Farrakhan has long accused Jews of wrongdoing in speeches, but he has rarely addressed Jewish groups so directly in writing. The Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish civil rights group which distributed copies of the letter, said in a statement Tuesday that Farrakhan’s “anti-Semitism is obsessive, diabolical and unrestrained. He has opened a new chapter in his ministry where scapegoating Jews is not just part of a message, but the message.” added by: crystalman

Scarborough Blames ‘American Apathy’ and Republicans for the Continued War in Afghanistan

Joe Scarborough on Monday continued to spin for Barack Obama, this time defending the President’s war strategy in Afghanistan and placing blame on the American people. Citing a New York Times columnist, the Morning Joe host complained, “And as Frank Rich said, the President’s best political ally on Afghanistan is apathy. Americans don’t care that their sons and daughters are going off to fight and die for a war that really has no end game.” Co-host Mika Brzezinski agreed. She derided, “Maybe if most Americans actually cared beyond the ones that have to go and serve we would have different outcomes.” While Scarborough reacted with some criticism, he was empathetic with the President because, “If Barack Obama takes the troops out and does what I’m saying he should do, Republicans will kill him. Every time a poppy is grown in Afghanistan, they will blame Barack Obama. Every time a woman is tortured inside Afghanistan, they will blame Barack Obama. Every time anything goes wrong, they will blame Barack Obama.” In all fairness, it was unacceptable for the media or Democrats to blame President Bush for any of our country’s problems. Except if you include all of them. Including, during the previous administration, the media saw the rise of the insurgency as an indictment of Bush’s lack of foresight, leadership and military acumen. Not to mention that the media and Democrats made stars of those who were critical of Bush’s policies. Nevertheless, Scarborough believed that the troops should get out of Afghanistan immediately because it is an “un-winnable war.” The former Republican Congressman has been sounding increasingly pro-Obama in recent months. Apparently, he’s now attacking the President from the left, parroting anti-war liberals. Since, the Afghanistan war is now the Obama administration’s war to own, it is now acceptable for the media to make excuses and avert blame to anyone but the current administration. Furthermore, if you criticize the Obama administration you are derided as a partisan who is just trying to blame Obama for another problem he inherited from the Bush administration. The host and anchors of MSNBC certainly weren’t as understanding of no-win situations when it came to the Bush administration. Based upon the actions of the current administration and its supporters, one would think passing the buck, not baseball, is our national pastime.

Jim Cramer Admits the Obvious: Obama’s Policies Not Working

CNBC’s Jim Cramer appeared on Wednesday’s Today show and pretty much admitted the obvious to Meredith Vieira, that all of Barack Obama’s policies geared to help hiring are “not working.” On to talk about the Dow dropping on Tuesday, Cramer pointed out “there’s too much fear” about what the Obama administration will do about taxes, which led to Today co-anchor Vieira to question “Do you believe the President’s policies are creating the conditions necessary for businesses to hire?” To which Cramer bluntly stated “they’re not working.” The following segment was aired on the June 30 Today show: MEREDITH VIEIRA: And now to the economy and new jitters on Wall Street. The Dow opens today below the 10,000 mark for the first time in nearly three weeks after plunging 268 points on Tuesday. So what is driving the latest fear among investors? Jim Cramer is the host of CNBC’s Mad Money. Jim, good morning to you. JIM CRAMER: Good morning, Meredith. VIEIRA: Here’s how one writer put it. He said the markets were spooked by the slowing economies in China and in Europe. Do investors have good reason to be spooked? CRAMER: I think that they do if we don’t start creating some jobs here. Those economies do matter, but what’s most important is job creation. If it we get a number on Friday, which is our national labor number, that shows no new jobs created, then we have reason to worry. VIEIRA: And, and that is the rumor, that, that’s exactly what we’re gonna see on Friday. CRAMER: And I think that’s what really drove our market down. The other economies? Europe’s been bad for some time. I think China’s okay. We are the worry. There’s too much fear and there’s way too much anxiety about what Washington will or will not do in terms of taxes. VIEIRA: Well do you believe the President’s policies are creating the conditions necessary for businesses to hire? There’s a lot of controversy about them. CRAMER: Well I think we have to just look at the broad numbers and say that they’re not working. I would, look, it would be terrific to say that there’s tons of jobs being created and people aren’t applying for them but we know that’s not the case. VIEIRA: You also have the Consumer Confidence Index came out on Tuesday down 10 points from May to June, makes it harder for the President to sell his economic policy. How significant is that number? CRAMER: I think that, that was also a huge part of what happened yesterday. We started realizing that May was bad. Now maybe June is bad. We don’t know what’s causing it. We know that there’s just a total lack of confidence and a belief that there will be no new jobs created. I think, by the way, that, that’s too gloomy. I think we should be more confident and I think that the gloom is way overdone and that the market was way overdone yesterday. VIEIRA: Yeah but, but there are economists that are saying we’re headed toward a depression or a double digit recession. You don’t buy that? CRAMER: We just had one of those. You don’t go right back into it. Look, in 1938 our country did and if you want to go back in history, it was because we decided to go to a balanced budget. I read all those negative columnists and I was surprised that they all, in unison, decided that everything is awful right now. It’s not. It’s not great, Meredith, but it’s not that bad. It’s nothing like what they say it is. VIEIRA: So you’re advising people stay in the market. CRAMER: Definitely! Don’t make a move. It’s just not worth it. VIEIRA: Alright Jim Cramer, thank you so much.
