Stephanopoulos Enchanted By Obama’s ‘Marshal Language’ and ‘Feel of FDR’

President Barack Obama’s Oval Office address about the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico certainly impressed George Stephanopoulos, though that’s not a difficult achievement for the favorably pre-disposed Democratic operative turned network political expert. ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC were all back to regular programming two minutes or less after Obama finished, but that was enough time for Stephanopoulos to display his delight. “What struck me tonight,” he informed ABC anchor Diane Sawyer, is: Oval Office addresses are often used when the nation is at war and tonight the President used marshal language. He talked about a “siege,” the “assault on our shores” and his “battle plan” to fix it. And he said we have to “rally together.” The co-host of ABC’s Good Morning America proceeded to relay, presuming the inspirational goal was met, that the White House was “reaching for” the “feel of Franklin Roosevelt during World War II and those fireside chats and the President even said that during World War II they said we couldn’t build enough planes and tanks, but we did. We can beat this as well.” To which, Sawyer chimed in by quoting liberal hero FDR: “Only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” From immediately following Obama’s 8 PM EDT speech on Tuesday night, June 15: GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: What struck me tonight, Diane, is you know those Oval Office addresses are often used when the nation is at war and tonight the President used marshal language. He talked about a “siege,” the “assault on our shores” and his “battle plan” to fix it. And he said we have to “rally together.” And I think what the White House was reaching for tonight is the feel of Franklin Roosevelt during World War II and those fireside chats and the President even said that during World War II they said we couldn’t build enough planes and tanks, but we did. We can beat this as well. DIANE SAWYER: “Only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”

Bachmann: Obama Oil Spill Response ‘Dereliction of Leadership’; Media Lowered President’s ‘Level of Accountability’

Minnesota Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann isn’t exactly known for her reticence on the news of the day. And when it comes to the White House’s handling of the BP oil spill disaster, Bachmann had some harsh words for President Barack Obama. Speaking at the June 25 Bloggers Briefing at the Heritage Foundation , Bachmann pointed out how she thought it was peculiar that all the comments coming out of the White House were geared toward the president specifically and not to the victims of this crisis. “The thing that we’re all focusing on today will be the president’s remarks that he’ll be giving tonight and it looks like an absolute opportunism moment for the president to try and advance the next stage of his legislative agenda,” Bachmann said. “And I think the curious feature in all of this has been: this is a major disaster and yet it seems like every response that has been coming out of the White House has been about the president rather than about the disaster. That is odd to me. That seems extremely odd.” The Minnesota Republican said the hapless reaction to the oil spill event and the administration’s mishandling of the Nashville flood in April that went largely ignored by the President and the media raised questions about the administration’s leadership. “It seems like a dereliction of leadership, especially when you consider what happened in Nashville was also a disaster – an unmitigated disaster for the people down in Nashville,” she said. “Not only has the president not yet visited to highlight the devastation that has happened to businesses and people’s lives there, but he also hasn’t even mentioned Nashville as a disaster. That’s interesting to me, how the White House seems to be picking and choosing between disasters – for whatever reason and I can’t speculate what that reason may be, but for some reason Nashville didn’t make the cut for a presidential visit or a presidential mention.” When asked, Bachmann didn’t sound too hopeful that Congress would exercise its oversight role and hold hearing looking into what she suggested was the federal government’s mishandling of the oil spill response efforts. “I am sure Nancy Pelosi will get on that tomorrow morning and Harry Reid,” she said, to laughter. She characterized the ongoing Gulf disaster as a missed opportunity for the president to untie the country, something that “candidate Obama” seemingly could have done, as opposed to President Obama. “I give the President a lot of credit as candidate Obama,” she continued. “He really did have kind of a once-in-a-generation opportunity to be that transformational president, which I wish he could have been. But unfortunately the last 18 months I think we have seen the ground shake underneath our country because of a lot of policy decisions he’s made but also from a stylistic point of view – the way that he has handled various crises in his presidency – and I don’t think that has engendered confidence.” She also mentioned the White House’s handling of  last month’s flotilla disaster, and she took a shot at the media for not holding Obama as accountable as they held the Bush administration for similar responses. “Look at the blockade situation with Turkey and with Israel,” Bachmann said. “All the wrong signals were sent out of that event in my opinion. And it’s made Israel even more vulnerable than they were before. So for that and a lot of other reasons, I think we really need to give – the White House needs to be held at least to the same level of accountability the previous administration was held to. And I don’t see that media, present company excluded, has necessarily done that.”

Hawaii Elections Official Says Obama Not Born in USA

“I had direct access to the Social Security database, the national crime computer, state driver's license information, international passport information, basically just about anything you can imagine to get someone's identity,” Adams explained. “I could look up what bank your home mortgage was in. I was informed by my boss that we did not have a birth record [for Obama].” Looks like time's up for the alien Man Child crypto-Muslim infiltrator. added by: crystalman

Politico’s Roger Simon: Obama ‘Calling Out’ Bobby Jindal’s ‘Hypocrisy’

Appearing on MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Reports on Tuesday, Politico columnist Roger Simon described a recent interview with President Obama: “…he showed a genuine irritation….when people like Bobby Jindal, you know, standing up, screaming about more federal action…a small-government, no federal aid kind of guy. And the President is calling out those people for hypocrisy.” Simon was discussing a quote from Obama in that interview , in which the President whined: “Some of the same folks who have been hollering and saying do something are the same folks who, just two or three months ago, were suggesting that government needs to stop doing so much.” Apparently, asking the federal government to do its job in a national emergency but not take over people’s health care is the liberal definition of hypocrisy. Earlier, Mitchell asked Simon to preview the President’s prime time address on the oil spill. Simon gushed: “…he’s cool and collected about things but he also realizes that he has to break through that, and tonight is his chance. You know, speeches have never failed Barack Obama. They started his presidential career. They’ve always rescued him at tough times…. I think he wants to re-establish that personal bond he once had with voters.” He could hardly wait for Obama’s performance: “I think tonight we saw a preview of it in Pensacola. He likes to preview the speeches like opening a play out of town before you go to Broadway.”   Here is a full transcript of the June 15 segment: 1:15PM EST ANDREA MITCHELL: For months a voice has been missing. We’ve been missing the voice of Politico’s chief political columnist Roger Simon. He has been struggling with blood poisoning. He’s now made a welcome recovery and is back stronger than ever, having just had an exclusive interview with the President, and then appeared on Meet the Press and Hardball and you join us now. Roger, it is wonderful to see you. ROGER SIMON: Wonderful to be back with you. MITCHELL: I can’t tell you how happy we are in person and also to read your great interview with President Obama. SIMON: Thank you. MITCHELL: Now you spent time – you’re the only journalist who spent time with the President recently as we prepare for tonight’s big speech. Tell us your impression of how he is handling the crisis and what he wants to project tonight. SIMON: Well, it won’t surprise you to learn that he’s cool and collected about things but he also realizes that he has to break through that, and tonight is his chance. You know, speeches have never failed Barack Obama. They started his presidential career. They’ve always rescued him at tough times and I think tonight we saw a preview of it in Pensacola. He likes to preview the speeches like opening a play out of town before you go to Broadway. And he said in Pensacola, ‘I am with you.’ He didn’t say ‘we are with you.’ He’s making it very personal. And I think he wants to re-establish that personal bond he once had with voters. MITCHELL: Now there’s also a thin-skinned aspect to the President at times. You wrote in the Politico interview, discussing the role of the government in the oil spill, you said some of the same – this is quoting the President – ‘some of the same folks who have been hollering and saying do something are the same folks who, just two or three months ago, were suggesting that government needs to stop doing so much. Some of the same people who were saying the President needs to show leadership and solve this problem are some of the same folks who, just a few months ago, were saying, this guy is trying to engineer a takeover of our society through the federal government that is going to restrict our freedoms.’ So he’s reacting to these criticisms. SIMON: He is. And that troubles him, and that’s one of the two moments I think where he showed a genuine irritation there, and – well, three moments. There, dealing with Congress on the same way: ‘Congress, if I had gone to six months before for extra money they would have said no,’ and also with the press, a continuing irritation of his. When he sees people like Bobby Jindal, you know, standing up, screaming about more federal action, more federal aid, well, six months ago, that’s not the person that Bobby Jindal was. He was a small-government, no federal aid kind of guy. And the President is calling out those people for hypocrisy. MITCHELL: Let me just ask you on a personal note, because you’ve been through Hell and back, and there you are, you’ve covered Barack Obama during the campaign, you’ve had interviews in the past, and now you’re entering the Oval Office in a very different way. They reached out to you. You also reached out to them. But how was it different and how did the President accommodate you? SIMON: I was really nervous. I felt like a summer intern on his first job. I’ve been interviewing people for decades. This felt different. You’re in the Oval Office, you’re in the center of power. And also, I must say, the President was extremely gracious. He didn’t wait in the Oval Office behind his desk for me to come in. He came out and walked down the hallway. He greeted me, we entered together, he turned around his chair to face me. So the task is to be grateful for that, which I was, and also as a journalist to fight it and still ask tough questions. MITCHELL: Well, you did it brilliantly. Roger, we are just so grateful you’re back. SIMON: Oh, I’m so happy to be back with you, Andrea. Thank you for this. MITCHELL: Thank you. And we look forward to other exclusive interviews from you, from Politico. SIMON: Thank you.

Mediaite’s Colby Hall: Rep. Etheridge a ‘Hero’ For Assaulting Students?

Mediaite’s Colby Hall thinks Congressman Bob Etheridge might be a hero for assaulting a college student who asked him a question. Etheridge attacked a student and held him captive for a short time after he asked if the Congressman supported the Obama agenda. Colby Hall wrote an article defending him titled, Congressman Loses Cool To Students With a Flip Cam, But Somehow Comes Out The Hero? . To be sure, Hall says, “No he’s not a hero. He’s a jerk,” but he only added that part in after his post was savaged by commenters . Earlier versions of the post, including the one automatically posted to Beltway Blips and the excerpt on Hall’s author page show that clarification was added later, and the post itself notes, “Edit. note – this post has been slightly edited for clarity from an earlier iteration.” Hall’s defense of Etheridge echos the DNC talking points that the videographers were unidentified and probably conservative . After all, assault is perfectly fine as long as it is done to a conservative or an alleged Republican operative. (Indeed, the media seems to have adopted this lesson in the Tea Party movement .) Hall said: But little is known about these “students.” The YouTube video is published under an account titled TonyManization, and even more damning is that the faces of the individuals asking the Congressman questions are blurred out. Hmmm…nothing like the courage of the anonymous protester. Which brings us back to Etheridge’s response. Yeah – he comes off as a jerk, but…when in Rome. The “when in Rome” defense… That would suggest that the Congressman should respond in an equivalent manner to the videographers. Is grabbing ahold of the questioner and threatening him an equitable response? Hall also attack Andrew Breitbart’s Big Government–Breitbart’s site having launched the video’s viral explosion–for the network’s great success in exposing government corruption. So yeah, if Big Government (the site that gave us the hidden camera video that took down ACORN) is telling us to expect more of this sort of inflammatory and guerrilla interview tactics, well then, we should be seeing more of this. And that fact is not lost on many elected officials who are probably on edge, half-expecting to be ambushed around every corner. Such is the case here. But there’s not exactly anything inflammatory about standing on a public street and asking a simple question. It is that easy to simply walk on by down the street, as any public figure should know. As for Breitbart’s role in promoting the video, the video is right there for all to see. Just like in the ACORN case, in which Breitbart provided the full audio and transcripts of ACORN employees openly giving advice on how to run a brothel, the video speaks for itself, and Breitbart’s relative level of credibility is irrelevant to what anyone’s eyes can clearly see.

WaPo Predicts Glenn Beck’s Dangerous New Novel May Become Handbook for Terrorists

You don’t have to be a fan of Glenn Beck’s moonlighting as a fiction writer to be a little stunned at the audacity of The Washington Post today. Post book editor Steven Levingston mocks the prose of Beck’s new novel The Overton Window on the front of Tuesday’s Style section, including its patriotic character Molly Ross proclaiming “”There’s nothing I wouldn’t give up to defend my country…No matter how hard it might be, there’s nothing that’s in my power that I wouldn’t do.” But then he suggests Beck will inspire the next Oklahoma City-style terrorist act:   The danger of books like this is that radical readers may take the story’s fiction for fact, or interpret the fiction — which Beck encourages — as a reflection of a reality that they must fend off by any means necessary. “The Overton Window” risks falling into the tradition of other anti-government novels such as “The Turner Diaries” by William L. Pierce, which became a handbook of extremists and inspired Timothy McVeigh to blow up the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City in 1995. As Beck tells his soldiers in the voice of Noah: “Put up or shut up . . . go hard or go home. Freedom is the rare exception . . . not the rule, and if you want it you’ve got to do your part to keep it.” I have not read the book, but I doubt it’s a racist manifesto like “The Turner Diaries.” Levingston’s quotations here don’t exactly suggest his characters are saying “let’s blow up a federal building with an ammonia bomb.” Levingston has a blog on the Post website called Political Bookworm. Last month, he publicized two leftist authors of the book “Over the Cliff: How the Obama Election Drove the American Right Insane.”

White House Correspondents Chief Jumps to Left-Wing Group – One Outside of Journalism, That Is

The current President of the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA), Ed Chen – who instituted the silliness of having the organization buy carbon credits to offset the travel of this year’s dinner headliner, Jay Leno, as well as for the President’s motorcade (seriously) – is leaving Bloomberg News to lend his shallow liberal advocacy to the left-wing Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). This is the second spin for Chen through the revolving door. He was the long-time White House correspondent for the Los Angeles Times when he left the newspaper “to join the NRDC in 2006, but then jumped back into the world of journalism in 2007 with a job at Bloomberg,” Politico’s Patrick Gavin recalled in a Sunday post . (Screen shot is from an April 28, 2005 news conference with President Bush.) In an e-mail to the Politico’s Mike Allen, Chen trumpeted that at the NRDC he will be able to perform “the Lord’s work” and that he wants to “help public officials find the wisdom and courage to do the right thing to combat climate change before it’s too late.” His e-mail message: My regret over leaving one of the world’s largest — and certainly the most ambitious — news organizations is offset by a sense of urgency in resuming doing the Lord’s work, particularly after the BP oil spill. That debacle was a divine signal to redouble my efforts to help clean up the environment, help America kick its petroleum addiction, and help public officials find the wisdom and courage to do the right thing to combat climate change before it’s too late. So, I’m returning to the Natural Resources Defense Council (in Washington), soon to be reachable at: EChen(at)nrdc.org. Picking up on the Politico’s post for a Monday night “Grapevine” item, the FNC’s Bret Baier quoted how Politico grasped the obvious, that this latest move “will likely reinforce notions…that all journalists are biased and largely towards Democratic-friendly organizations.” WHCA officers page with photos of Chen with President Obama. Chen marks the 16th major media figure to have joined the Obama administration (or an aligned union, or now an aligned left-wing environmental group) — plus one who traveled through the revolving door from helping the Obama campaign into a news media slot. For the complete list, check my June 7 MRC post: ABC News’s Deputy Political Director Jumps to Left-Wing Union, the 15th Obama Activist Through the Media’s Revolving Door June 10: “ After Two Years with Obama, Linda Douglass Returns to News Media ” Baier’s June 14 ‘Grapevine” report: Bloomberg’s Ed Chen is leaving journalism to join the Natural Resources Defense Council, telling Politico the oil spill prompted his decision to resume doing what he called the “Lord’s work” in fighting climate change. Politico noted the ease with which reporters jump between journalism and advocacy seems to be increasing and that it quote “will likely reinforce notions…that all journalists are biased and largely towards Democratic-friendly organizations.” Politico noted that it, too, has struggled with the revolving door. Politico reporter Jonathan Alan left for a short time to work for a Democratic Congresswoman [Wasserman-Schultz] and had said before returning to Politico quote, “I’m hopeful I can advance the Democratic Party’s goals and obviously the Congresswoman’s goals.”
