WASHINGTON (AP) — A crucial first Senate vote on President Barack Obama's health care overhaul in a rare Saturday night session looms as a test of Democratic unity and the president's prestige. Democratic leaders are optimistic of success, but they need every Democrat and both independents to vote ''yes,'' and two moderates remained uncommitted ahead of the roll call, which is expected around 8 p.m. The vote will determine whether debate can go forward on Majority Leader Harry Reid's 2,074-page bill to dramatically remake the U.S

Los Angeles Opera said today that it will present two workshop performances of a new commission called “The 110 Project,” an opera that tells the stories of the communities along L.A.'s 110 Freeway, which runs from the Pasadena area, past downtown and all the way to San Pedro.

Yesterday, we reported that CafePress had halted sales of T-shirts bearing the slogan, “Pray For Obama: Psalm 109:8,” which in Bible-talk means pray that “his days be few; let another take his office.” After some thought, they’re selling them again. Go here for the full panoply of CafePress bumper stickers, mugs, and shirts containing prayers for the president to die and for his daughters— per Psalm 109 —to “continually be vagabonds, and to beg.” The Psalm 109 items were indeed briefly taken off the market yesterday, a CafePress spokesman tells Gawker, after some controversy developed about the appropriateness of veiled death threats as bumper sticker material.
