No Isht Sherlock! Studies Show States With The Most Gun Laws Have Far Fewer Shooting Deaths

Bang Bang! Lackin’ azz gun laws ? That’s that isht we DON’T like! Via NYDailyNews reports : States with the most gun control laws have the fewest gun-related deaths, according to a study that suggests sheer quantity of measures might make a difference. But the research leaves many questions unanswered and won’t settle the debate over how policymakers should respond to recent high-profile acts of gun violence. In the dozen or so states with the most gun control-related laws, far fewer people were shot to death or killed themselves with guns than in the states with the fewest laws, the study found. Overall, states with the most laws had a 42 percent lower gun death rate than states with the least number of laws. The results are based on an analysis of 2007-2010 gun-related homicides and suicides from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The researchers also used data on gun control measures in all 50 states compiled by the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, a well-known gun control advocacy group. They compared states by dividing them into four equal-sized groups according to the number of gun laws. The results were published online Wednesday in the medical journal JAMA Internal Medicine. More than 30,000 people nationwide die from guns every year nationwide, and there’s evidence that gun-related violent crime rates have increased since 2008, a journal editorial noted. During the four-years studied, there were nearly 122,000 gun deaths, 60 percent of them suicides. “Our motivation was really to understand what are the interventions that can be done to reduce firearm mortality,” said Dr. Eric Fleegler, the study’s lead author and an emergency department pediatrician and researcher at Boston Children’s Hospital. He said his study suggests but doesn’t prove that gun laws — or something else — led to fewer gun deaths. Fleegler is also among hundreds of doctors who have signed a petition urging President Barack Obama and Congress to pass gun safety legislation, a campaign organized by the advocacy group Doctors for America. Gun rights advocates have argued that strict gun laws have failed to curb high murder rates in some cities, including Chicago and Washington, D.C. Fleegler said his study didn’t examine city-level laws, while gun control advocates have said local laws aren’t as effective when neighboring states have lax laws. Previous research on the effectiveness of gun laws has had mixed results, and it’s a “very challenging” area to study, said Dr. Daniel Webster, director of the Johns Hopkins Center For Gun Policy. He was not involved in the current study. The strongest kind of research would require comparisons between states that have dissimilar gun laws but otherwise are nearly identical, “but there isn’t a super nice twin for New Jersey,” for example, a state with strict gun laws, Webster noted. Fleegler said his study’s conclusions took into account factors also linked with gun violence, including poverty, education levels and race, which vary among the states. The average annual gun death rate ranged from almost 3 per 100,000 in Hawaii to 18 per 100,000 in Louisiana. Hawaii had 16 gun laws, and along with New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts was among states with the most laws and fewest deaths. States with the fewest laws and most deaths included Alaska, Kentucky, Louisiana and Oklahoma. But there were outliers: South Dakota, for example, had just two guns laws but few deaths. Editorial author Dr. Garen Wintemute, director the Violence Prevention Research Program at the University of California, Davis, said the study doesn’t answer which laws, if any, work. Wintemute said it’s likely that gun control measures are more readily enacted in states with few gun owners — a factor that might have more influence on gun deaths than the number of laws. Seems like it’s pretty clear what needs to be done. Now it’s just a matter of getting the politicians to get on their jobs! AP

In Salty White Folks News: Mitt Romney Says “It Kills Me” Not To Be POTUS, Compares Obama To Roman Emperor Nero

Sir, it’s over, you lost, quit yer b!tc#in’ Mitt Romney Still Mudslinging At President Barack Obama Via NYDailyNews Mitt Romney admits he bungled his bid for the White House — but he hasn’t stopped tossing campaign-style mud at President Obama. In his first TV interview since his Election Day defeat, Romney criticized Obama for “berating Republicans and blaming and pointing” rather than leading the way to a compromise over $85 billion in across-the-board budget cuts that took effect Friday. “Nero is fiddling,” Romney said in a taped interview for “Fox News Sunday,” comparing his former rival to the evil Roman emperor who legendarily played his fiddle as Rome burned. In the Fox spot, in which his wife Ann also fielded questions from host Chris Wallace, Romney copped to numerous failures during his campaign. Those included his inability to effectively appeal to Latino and black voters, and shooting himself in the foot by calling “47%” of the country moochers. Just as he did on the campaign trail, the former private-equity superstar suggested that if he were calling the shots in the Oval Office, he would be doing a better job of working to end the fiscal gridlock on Capitol Hill. “I look at what’s happening right now, I wish I were there,” he said, referring to the partisan-fueled impasse that prevented lawmakers from reaching a deal to reconsider the automatic cuts to domestic and defense spending, known as the sequester. “It kills me not to be there, not to be in the White House doing what needs to be done.” Awwww poor thang…FOH Image via AP

Some Black History Month Preciousness: Toddlers Pay Homage To African-American Achievers

How cute… Children Channel African-American Achievers For Black History Month Photographer Eunique Jones solicited the help of a few young faces to pay homage to some notable African-American achievers for Black History Month . via Miss Jia This just might be one of the cutest things I have seen in a long time. Photographer, Eunique Jones, launched an amazing campaign in honor of Black History Month, showcasing a famous figure for each day of February with the help of some adorable children. As a motivational speaker and a photographer, I recently realized that my lens can also be my microphone. For Black History Month, I wanted to create a campaign that would empower and excite young people about their history and their future in a creative and yet relatable way. I thought about my two sons and how they were both born during President Barack Obama’s election and re-election. How awesome is that?! From there, I began to think about all of the individuals, past and current, who have and/or continue to blaze new trails and pave the way for the future. Because of Them, We Can. Too adorable! Check out a few more precious pics on the flip…

Miranda Kerr Bikini Photo: Good Morning, Indeed

This bikini photo of Miranda Kerr requires little explanation. Once again, the sexy 29-year-old Victoria’s Secret model kindly posted an Instagram pic of herself for all to enjoy. “Good morning,” Kerr simply captioned it. It was a very good morning, indeed, thanks to her. Kerr gave no clues as to where this shot was taken, which is kind of annoying, as it looks breathtaking and we’d love to see it ourselves one day. Eh, it’s okay. We’ll settle for looking at Miranda Kerr bikini photos .

Rush Limbaugh: Ashamed of America!

You’ve done it now, Democrats. You’ve made Rush Limbaugh officially “ashamed” to be an American. That’s how the conservative radio host described himself yesterday when ranting about the budget sequestration, an issue President Obama says could cripple the economy if Congress can’t strike a deal before next month. Limbaugh believes that argument from Obama – who said yesterday that love of rich people binds the GOP together – is an “insult” to his “common sense and intelligence.” Rush Limbaugh: Ashamed of His Country “Here they come… sucking us in, roping us in,” Limbaugh said. “Panic here, fear there, crisis, destruction, no meat inspection, no cops, no teachers, no firefighters, no air traffic control. I’m sorry, my days of getting roped into all of this are over.” Limbaugh also believes The Dark Knight Rises is a liberal conspiracy .

Donald Trump Threatens Lawsuit Over Macy’s "Dump Trump" Campaign

Donald Trump is now threatening a lawsuit against the individual responsible the Dump Trump campaign , which aims to get him fired by Macy’s. Angelo Carusone organized the online petition that’s garnered a whopping 683,000 signatures asking the store to axe Trump as a celebrity spokesman. The reason(s)? All those “birther” conspiracy theories Trump peddled about President Barack Obama, as well as his general jackassery, most likely. In any case, Trump is not amused. Carusone received a cease and desist from Don’s counsel threatening him with a $25 MILLION lawsuit. The charge? Interfering in Trump’s business and contractual relationships. “Do not test Mr. Trump’s resolve in protecting his professional name, reputation and business affairs,” reads a letter from Trump’s attorney, Alan Garten. The attorney for The Donald went on to accuse the petition’s creator of “mob-like bullying and coercion” and “intentionally disseminated misinformation.” At least publicly, Carusone is not swayed; he’s even laughing it off. “Donald Trump’s attempt to silence me will not work. I’ve dealt with enough bullies and know better than to succumb to intimidation,” he said in a statement. “By threatening me, Trump is only reinforcing our point: that Trump’s ‘brand’ is consequence-free bullying and chicanery; it shouldn’t be rewarded.” BOOM. Trump is also suing Bill Maher for not paying the $5 million he “promised” in an obvious joke, so Carusone may not be too off base with that accusation. Paul Levy, a free-speech attorney for non-profit Public Citizen who represents Carusone, fired back with a letter of his own, defending his client. “Your letter repeatedly asserts, without any factual basis, that Carusone has exaggerated the extent to which the public has endorsed his boycott effort.” “You contend, without being specific, that Carusone casts Trump in a false light.” “There is a well-established First Amendment right to advocate a boycott over policy-related objections,” he said, adding that if you could sue over political disagreements, well … Let’s just say no one would be sued more than Donald J. Trump.
