INTERVIEW: Robert Redford & Jackie Evancho Discuss ‘The Company You Keep’

Remember Occupy Wall Street?  Remember how popular support for the protest soared and then dwindled as organizers proved to be disorganized and ineffectual?  In his new film, The Company You Keep , Robert Redford examines why so many movements like OWS fail.  “They don’t always succeed, they tend to evaporate,” Redford notes.  “I was curious about why. And what was the cost [for] those people that so believed?” In addition to looking back at generations of history,  The Company You Keep also showcases several generations of acting talent: From Julie Christie to Stanley Tucci to Shia LaBeouf. Redford’s most contemporary casting choice is America’s Got Talent wunderkind Jackie Evancho, who makes her acting debut in the film.  “Acting and singing are actually very similar,” says Evancho.  “Because they’re both telling a story.” Check out my full interview from the NY Premiere below: Follow Grace Randolph on  Twitter . Jay-Z Under Scrutiny For Selling Occupy Wall Street T-Shirts

Read this article:

Jay-Z has designed a t-shirt in support of the Occupy Wall Street protests, but a statement from his Rocawear company has some questioning his intent. The shirt reads “Occupy All Streets” crossing out the “W” and adding an “S”, a clever play on words and pretty consistent with the style of T-shirts the company has released in the past. However, the Business Insider asked if any profits from the sale of the shirt would go to the organizers of the Wall Street protests. Rocawear responded with the following statement: “The ‘Occupy All Streets’ T-shirt was created in support of the ‘Occupy Wall Street’ movement. Rocawear strongly encourages all forms of constructive expression, whether it be artistic, political or social. ‘Occupy All Streets’ is our way of reminding people that there is change to be made everywhere, not just on Wall Street. At this time we have not made an official commitment to monetarily support the movement.” Jay-Z is by no means the first person to create paraphernalia inspired by the protests. An entire collection of shirts can be found at websites like THIS (CLICK HERE) . Is Jay-Z being questioned simply because he is a bajillionaire? And if proceeds were to go to anyone, who would they go to? The Occupy Movement is hardly a monolith and has many different factions. Yes, it is ironic to capitalize on a movement against Capitalism but isn’t that the American way? REVIEW: Tense, Timely Margin Call Evokes Occupy Wall Street Outrage

Margin Call isn’t the first film to peer into the moneyed, aspirationally heartless world of finance, and it’s not going to be the last, but it’s got a fair shot at being the one with the most masterful timing. J.C. Chandor ‘s feature debut aims to offers insight into the mindset of bankers poised to plunge the country into the 2008 economic crisis because of their own reckless conduct, and it reaches screens as Occupy Wall Street has spread across the U.S. and internationally, fueled in part by outrage about a lack of accountability in the financial and corporate world. The film’s not an indictment or a satire — it’s a tense but contemplative exploration of being on the other side of one of those mirrored skyscraper windows, of being in a precarious place of privilege, power and, most important of all, carefully guarded remove.

Seen On The Protestin’ Scene: Yeezy And His Gold Grills Visit Occupy Wall Street

With that shady BDR character… SMH. They must’ve heard there was lots of white women down there. Our homeslices over at the New York Observer posted some photos of Perpetual Professional Bandwagon Jumper Russell Simmons bringing his wallet flexing “poet” friend Kanye West by the “Occupy Wall Street” protests and we thought we’d share: Yes, that Kanye West—the one with the $25,000 chains and small child-sized Horus-head-as-bling pieces—dropped into Occupy Wall Street today. He was apparently accompanied by Def Jam founder Russell Simmons, who Tweeted “kanye west is on his way to #occupywallstreet” with this photo: It sounds like it was sheer pandemonium, though no definitive accounts other than plenty of pictures and “he was here, and then he left” have yet to come through. And so it is: Kanye West gets added to the list of celebrities (Susan Sarandon, Jeff Mangum, Michael Moore, Talib Kweli) who have dropped into Occupy Wall Street who are not Thom Yorke. These ninjas ain’t even in the 99%, are they? Last time we checked they was ballin’ so hard, you know… And we could probably pay off all our student loans combined with the gold in Ye’s mouth. Just sayin’!
