Birds fly over oil on the water near Breton Sound Island, on the southern most tip of the Chandeleur Islands in the Gulf of Mexico, south of Louisiana April 29, 2010. A massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico neared wildlife refuges and seafood grounds along the Louisiana coast on Friday, as efforts redoubled to avert what could become one of the worst U.S. ecological disasters. Blind Boy Sees Like Dolphins Do

A blind boy was taught a technique which is used by dolphins to navigate their way through the ocean. This technique has helped him learn how to see despite of his condition. Jamie Aspland makes high-pitch clicks and uses the rebounding sound from surfaces in his path to plot his course around objects. The four-year-old was born without sight. An expert in the U.S. has taught him how to use the revolutionary technique. Jamie is able to imitate the behavior of flicking his tongue against the roof of his mouth. California Daniel Kish is also blind and he taught many children around the world how to imitate dolphins, Jamie is just one of them. Kish calls the eco-location technique “flash-sonar”. Using this technique will allow Jamie to eventually detect building from a distance of 100 meters. According to Deborah, Jamie’s mother, her son can now walk to the park unaided for the first time and was able to successfully steered himself around the fence. Jamie no longer holds his mother’s hand while strolling around the park and this made their life more convenient. Daniel Kish is the president of World Access for the Blind. He developed bio-acoustics based on animal sonar to help humans from “mental maps” of their environment. He copied the technique used by dolphins to navigate their way through the ocean; by using high-pitch clicks to penetrate objects and reflect off the internal structure. Drink Thrown at Snooki; Nation Celebrates

Last season on Jersey Shore, Brad Ferro punched Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi. That was very uncool. You cannot condone violence of that nature, especially perpetrated against an Oompa Loompa by a ‘roided-up gym teacher. A drink tossed in her face, tough? That we can appreciate. The reality star, who just broke up with Emilio Masella , was doing shots with co-star J-Woww at Ocean’s 10 bar in Miami Saturday at 6 p.m. That’s when some random dude approached her. “She was in a good mood, but this particular guy was obviously interested and she wasn’t,” a witness said. “She told him, ‘Don’t f–k with me’ so he snatched her drink and walked off.” The situation escalated from there. “I guess he provoked her by wanting an apology and she flipped out,” the witness said. ” Snooki threw a handful of food from her table at the guy, and then slapped him on his shoulder and his face – before tossing a plastic cup at him.” It is unclear whether this will be shown on Jersey Shore, but unknown guy retaliated by throwing his drink all over Snooki. Well worth $7.50. J-Woww ran over screaming “What the f–k happened?” as security threw him out. Snooki said, “He took my drink!” Scintillating, as always. After taking a few seconds to re-do her hair pouf, she continued partying with J-Woww at another location. Season Two begins July 29!

8-Bit Bear – The Dark Void Zero Soundtrack Review

With the release of the soundtrack for Dark Void Zero , I am now firmly convinced Bear McCreary is either a genius or a time traveler. McCreary has so uncannily captured the feeling and tone of the mid-1980’s game scene with this 8-bit soundtrack, that you would swear his name is just a pseudonym and he is actually a member of the Konami Square Wave Club of composers, who has come forward in time to remind gamers of their sonic roots. Ok, that’s not fair, because as we all know he is a highly accomplished composer in his own right. However, the music for Dark Void Zero is another reason why we should hope he treads from the film and TV score world, back into the realm of game music, sooner rather than later. Click the time travel link below and listen why. When I reviewed Bear McCreary’s soundtrack album for Dark Void earlier this year, I pointed out how I hoped the inclusion of an 8-bit rendering of his theme for the game wouldn’t over shadow the orchestral music he created. And while his music for Dark Void is some of the best sounding game soundtrack material released so far this year, McCreary’s 8-bit sounds for Dark Void Zero are even more magical in their own retro-tastic way. Where the Dark Void soundtrack’s 8-bit version of the game’s theme was very short, with Dark Void Zero , we get a glorious, nearly two minute version of McCreary’s theme song. If you haven’t heard it before now, you would be forgiven for thinking this was found in some dusty vault in a game studio in Japan. Watch Larger Version of this Video Next up we have “Valley of Doom” which is an upbeat piece, incorporating the overarching Dark Void Zero music motifs, just as McCreary did in the music for its parent game. The shuffle of the percussion supports the shifting melodies quite nicely. Watch Larger Version of this Video “Scientific Complex” sounds like it could trace its inspirational roots into the early iterations of the Castlevania series. What starts off slow, quickly builds into a high speed arpeggiated 8-bit sci-fi romp. Watch Larger Version of this Video If you haven’t played Dark Void Zero yet, it is a heck of a lot of fun on the DSi and now PC, iPhone and iPad gamers get a chance to go retro with the game starting Monday. Even better news is Bear McCreary’s ludicrously awesome soundtrack for the game is available for download from Sumthing Digital for a measly $1.99 ! Since the music of the 8-bit era was so important to video games, here is hoping Dark Void Zero developer Other Ocean brings back Bear McCreary (or at least someone with his passion for this sound), should they decide to release more games like this.

The sea devours a disputed island – Bangladesh and climate change

The world is changing. Our atmosphere changes and our climate, as a result, does too. But also now, topographically, oru changing climate is beginning to alter our world. For the last few years island nations like the Maldvies have tried to raise awareness of the threat they face because of rising sea levels. And today, user WakeUpPeople clipped this story about global warming and geopolitics: Island disputed by India and Bangladesh has now been claimed by the sea. Map from FP Passport New Moore Island (or South Talpatti), has been disputed for over three decades. Now it's simply no longer there. It's only part of the incredible loss of land seen in the Bay of Bengal over the last few years. Vanguard's Adam Yamaguchi was in Bangladesh three years ago to see how the ocean was literally eating away the country year by year. added by: afitzgerald
