A “Lil Positivity”: Nick Cannon Gives Back With Back To School Meet And Greet In Crenshaw

Good lookin’ out yet again Nick . Nick Cannon used his star power to give back to the community of Crenshaw over the weekend with his annual back-to-school meet & greet and concert event at Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza. Produced by Cannon’s NCredible Entertainment, live performances by musical acts included Warner Bros. Records stars New Boyz, Wonder Broz, Rangers, 4Count, Gabi Wilson and Forever (formerly known as School Gyrls). In addition to providing entertainment, Cannon and the performing artists handed out over 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to kids generously donated by Office Depot, Monster, Mead Five Star, Project Canvas and the latest issue of Celebrity High magazine. Snacks were provided by pop chips and refreshments provided by Vitamin Water. Cannon also took the time to sit down with the kids to do art, painting on Project Canvas shoes alongside artist and professional skater Kris Markovich. We’re glad to see Nick giving back to the kids.

Michael Cimino to Receive Venice Honors The American writer/director/producer will be feted with the Venice Film Festival’s Persol 2012 Award, which recognizes a “legend of international filmmaking.” He will be presented with the award at a ceremony August 30th, followed by a screening of Cimino’s 1980 film, Heaven’s Gate . Around the ‘net… Willy Wonka Director Mel Stuart Dies at 83 His family said Mr. Stuart died at his Beverly Hills home after battling cancer. He began his career mainly directing documentaries. the 1971 adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was Stuart’s second feature film. He was nominated for an Oscar in 1965 for his documentary, Four Days in November , about the assassination of John F Kennedy, BBC reports . Bourne Legacy Poised to Seize U.S. Box Office The Jeremy Renner starter is trending toward a $35 million weekend opening, enough to eclipse The Dark Knight Rises and outpace two other wide-release openers, Hope Springs and The Campaign , Reuters and The Wrap report . Heather Graham Heads Back to The Hangover Graham will return to her role as the stripper named Jade in The Hangover III from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures. The pic will shoot this fall and brings back Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms – plus brings back Ken Jeong. Graham was absent from the franchise’s second installment, THR reports . Yancy Butler to Return to Kick-Ass 2 Butler will return to her role as the mother of Christopher Mintz-Plasse’s character, the villainous Red Mist. Aaron Johnson and Chloe Moretz are reprising their roles of Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl in Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Walls , THR reports . Man Faces Weapons Charges in TDKR Theater Incident Scott A. Smith, 37, is due in court Friday on two counts of carrying a concealed weapon and 19 counts related to carrying weapons “under disability.” He allegedly sat in the back of the theater with a bag that contained 9 mm semiautomatic handgun, two loaded magazine clips and three knives. Another knife was found on his person, CNN reports .

C’mon Randy, you too old for this isht Country Music Star Randy Travis Arrested For DUI Without Clothes On This has been one tough year for country singer Randy Travis. The singer is currently involved in a vicious divorce with his ex-wife, he has one arrest under is belt for public intoxication and he’s now adding another arrest, this time for DWI. Travis was arrested Tuesday night outside Tioga, Texas, for driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, and retaliation and obstruction, a felony. State troopers responded to a call at 11:18 p.m. reporting a man lying on the road outside of the town of Tioga. Travis had been involved in a single-car accident, police said. They discovered Travis at the scene with a “strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath and several signs of intoxication” and arrested him for DWI, according to the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office. On the way to the station, Travis allegedly threatened to shoot and kill the troopers, which resulted in an additional charge of retaliation and obstruction. Travis was brought to the station naked, though it’s unclear whether Travis was discovered naked or somehow disrobed later, Sgt. Ricky Wheeler of the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office told ABC News. B-b-but wait it gets worse! Travis’ mug shot shows him with a black eye and cuts on his face. Wheeler said police didn’t know if the bruises were the result of the car accident or if he was like that before. “That’s just the way he was brought into our jail,” Wheeler said. Travis, 53, was booked and held overnight, then released Wednesday after posting a total of $21,500 bond, $20,000 of which was for the felony charge. Natalie Portman Marries Benjamin Millepied The couple married in a nighttime ceremony along the California Central Coast are of Big Sur following a 14 month engagement. They have a son, Aleph. The couple met in the fall of 2009 while prepping for their 2010 film, Black Swan , which made $329 million worldwide and earned Portman an Oscar, THR reports . Specialty Box Office: Celeste and Jesse Forever Hot in Debut; Killer Joe Solid in 2nd Weekend Most specialty newcomers had a rough go in their rollouts over the weekend, but one film Celeste and Jesse Forever managed a spectacular debut. Magnolia Pictures’ 360 also enjoyed a respectable opening, while others failed to gain traction, Deadline reports . Marvel Studios Sued over Avengers Briefcase German company Rimowa GmbH apparently gave its permission for the Disney-owned film studio to use its Topas briefcase in the film. However, the company claims Marvel took the look of its design for a plastic replica case that is due to be sold as part of a forthcoming Blu-ray box set, The Guardian reports . Phase 4 Films Nabs Miss Dial The company picked up U.S. and Canadian rights to David H. Steinberg’s romantic comedy Miss Dial . The pic is the feature directorial debut of Puss in Boots writer Steinberg and stars Robinne Lee and Sam Jaeger, Variety reports .

WATCH: Jessica Biel Talks Total Recall, Politics and Getting Her Action Hero On

Jessica Biel likes to play her action heroes with a touch of femininity. Movieline pal Grace Randolph hit a special New York screening of Total Recall on Thursday night and chatted with the actress on the red carpet.  Biel plays the resistance fighter Melina and asked what quality she likes to bring to her action roles, tells Randolph that she aims to portray a character “who feels like a real woman,”  not “someone who’s so tough that you can relate to [her] but someone who is feminine and has an emotional arc as well as a physical arc. The screening was hosted by The Peggy Siegal Company and InStyle magazine, which features the beautiful Biel on the cover of its August issue. After the screening, guests headed to Meatpacking District nightclub No. 8 to compare notes and Len Wiseman’s remake with Paul Verhoeven’s 1990 original starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Batman film passed the $600 million mark worldwide on Wednesday, THR reports . Terrence Howard Joins A Girl and a Gun Howard will play a hustler with big Hollywood dreams, but flounders. But after intervening in a mugging, he gets pulled into a world of intrigue. The story will be based on the Activision/Blizzard Entertainment video game in which players take part in the ongoing struggle between the Horde and the Alliance, Movieweb reports .

SMH @ these guys killing this man for a Chrysler 300: Family and friends say a beloved minister was murdered Saturday in northwest Harris County, and now they need the community’s help to find the people who killed him. It happened around 1:30am at the Shadow Ridge Apartments in the 12200 block of Old Walters Road in north Harris County. Investigators identified the victim as 21-year-old Desmond Jones. He ministered and played music at several local churches and was well known in the Houston church community. According to Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Jones returned to the apartment complex after making a run for fast food. As he was parking, the suspects approached him and shot him twice — once in the head, officials said. The suspects reportedly stole the car Jones was driving and left him bleeding on the ground. He was transported by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Jones is survived by his wife and two young daughters. They were inside their home asleep when the shooting happened. Friends and relatives tell us the wife may even heard the gunshots. “She’s hurting but she’s doing well,” Pastor Chris Edwards said. A prayer vigil was held Saturday evening at the spot where he was killed. About 50 people gathered there, asking for the public’s help in finding the two men behind Jones’ murder. “We’re dealing with an innocent man losing his life at the hands of perpetrators who must be caught,” Bishop James Dixon said. The stolen vehicle is a silver 2012 Chrysler 300 sedan with chrome rims and Texas license plate number DS1-L815. The suspects are described only as black males. If you spot the vehicle, consider its occupants armed and dangerous.

Foreign Box Office: The Dark Knight Rises Commands Foreign Box Office The Dark Knight Rises  bowed in 40 markets including France ($11.3 million at 892 sites including previews), Germany ($9.9 at 718 spots including previews) and in Mexico ($9.8 million at 1,141 situations). Christopher Nolan’s final Batman feature also opened in Russia ($8.7 million at 1,310 screens including previews), Brazil ($6.6 million at 931 sites) and in Japan ($6 million including previews), THR reports . Killer Joe & Others Solid in Open: Specialty Box Office Killer Joe manned up to its NC-17 and made a solid showing in three theaters with the top per-theater average among newcomers, $12,621 average. Joss Whedon’s Encore Post-Avengers? Nothing

His film The Avengers is one of the highest grossers of the year and legions of fans gave adulation to him at the recent Comic-Con and even more did so at the box office. So what do you do when you have a blockbuster that has made nearly $1.5 billion worldwide and quickly counting? Take on Shakespeare and Much Ado About Nothing ! Well, he’s done it already and it’s headed to the Toronto International Film Festival in September, but the film adds to the filmmaker’s wide-ranging repertoire which has included, of course, The Avengers , a portion of last year’s doc Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope (as a writer) and TV episodes of Glee , The Office and Buffy the Vampire Slayer . Whedon’s version of Much Ado About Nothing will be a contemporary version of the Shakespearean story, which was shot in just 12 days, the Los Angeles Times notes . Toronto programmers noted the black and white movie “offers a dark, sexy and occasionally absurd view of the intricate game that is love.” The Bellwether Pictures project actually completed shooting last fall, well ahead of The Avengers massive debut in April. The film stars Amy Acker (from Whedon’s Cabin in the Woods and Alexis Denisof ( How I Met Your Mother ) as Beatrice and Benedick, which Bellwether calls “the least likely lovers” who are headed for their “inevitable tumble into love.” It is not the first time the story has been picked as a springboard for a contemporary re-telling. Kenneth Branagh took it on back in the early ’90s. That version starred Branagh along with Emma Thompson, Keanu Reeves, Kate Beckinsale and Denzel Washington.
