Dear Batman Fanboys: You Don’t Know What Real Love Is

On Monday a shockwave rippled through the delicate ecosystem that is the internet, the place where fans, critics, commenters, bloggers, and lurkers live and breathe (and mouth-breathe), over the first reviews of The Dark Knight Rises . The Bat- and Christopher Nolan-faithful rose in arms against the first critics who dared break the news that the comic book movie threequel was maybe not the best movie of all time. Threats were made . Nasty comments were flung . Entire websites were overrun and taken out in retribution. So I ask you, Bat-fans: What Would Batman Do ? The fanboy (for lack of a better word) frenzy felt more akin to Bane’s terrorist assault on Gotham City in TDKR than any heroic pursuit of justice Batman himself would exact. Either due to blind faith (like that of Bane’s fanatical, extremist followers), or the outrage of the disadvantaged 99% (i.e. fans who have to wait until Thursday night at midnight to see TDKR for themselves), the worst of the irate fandom lashed out, ill-informed and vicious, at the mere suggestion that what they love wasn’t good. But, wait. Most TDKR fans haven’t even seen TDKR yet! How do they know the movie even deserves their love, or the self-debasement of their own humanity that comes with issuing hateful vitriol at strangers? Realistically, I’m guessing it will fall into the mid-70s-to-low-80s on Rotten Tomatoes – and yes, I’ve actually seen the film. And when fans finally see it for themselves, let’s be real, they’re not all going to be thrilled. That’s not to say I don’t sympathize with the downer that is hearing that the thing you’ve been looking forward to since The Dark Knight in 2008 isn’t as great as it looks (and those snippets and glimpses of TDKR we’ve seen pre-release were pretty fantastic). I get it. I’ve been a Christian Bale fan for longer than most Batman followers knew who he was. Unless you’ve accepted Newsies into your life, Bat-fans, you don’t know what real love is. Sometimes real love, real fandom, is embracing a thing that you connect to in spite of its flaws. If you still love it warts and all, then doesn’t that mean all the more? But let’s look at why so many folks embraced the Nolan Batman series, whether or not they’d self-identify as Batman fanboys (or Nolanazis , if you will ), or are plain old laypersons who just enjoy the hell out of the movies: Because Nolan & Co. translated these comic book superhero tales into compelling storytelling for grown-ups. Batman Begins and The Dark Knight already well legitimized comic book stories in the film art world and, certainly, the marketplace; we now get nothing but superheroes every summer blockbuster season. At this point, validity as a film genre has already been established, albeit with mixed results (though that’s more the fault of studio filmmaking than the source material). So why wouldn’t fans demand better films be made from the properties they love? Perhaps after Friday, fans will turn to the messages in TDKR to guide them. In the wake of the first wave of negative reviews and mixed-positive reactions, the Bat-faithful looked a lot like the 99% in TDKR – and in TDKR , said 99% is not exactly celebrated as a righteous movement of disenfranchised people, but that’s a conversation for another day. In the film, the villainous Bane preys on the hopes and feelings of injustice among Gotham’s underprivileged class, rousing them into misguided unrest and mindless mob violence. Amidst the chaos, Batman espouses a message of individual heroism, quietly leading by example while minimizing the carnage. He insists that anyone can become Batman, anyone can become a hero. So use your words, Bat-fans – but make sure you’re using the right ones, and for the right reasons. Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Deranged And Disturbed: Washington Survivalist Says The Planning Of The Murder Of His Family Was “Exciting” In Creepy New Video!

This muhfugga GOTTA be off bath salt…smh A Washington Survivalist Says Plotting To Kill His Family Was “Exciting” A Washington man who killed his wife and daughter before taking his own life made a chilling video before the incident, saying planning for the murders had been “exciting.” In the video, released Thursday by the King County Sheriff’s Office, 41-year-old Peter Keller said normal life had become too boring. He detailed his plans for a life a life of crime – robbing banks and hiding out in a remote, underground bunker he spent years building. “I’m getting to the point where just trying to live and pay bills and live as a civilian, go to work, it just freaks me out. It’s actually more comfortable for me to think about living out here robbing banks, pharmacies, just taking what I want for as long as I can.” Keller shot his wife, Lynnettee, 41, and daughter Kaylene, 18, in their beds in North Bend, east of Seattle, on April 22. He then torched the home in what police said was an unsuccessful attempt to destroy evidence. Keller then retreated to his underground bunker in Washington’s Cascade Mountains, where he fatally shot himself five days later as police and SWAT teams moved in. In the rambling and often disjointed 10 minute video, Keller – a survivalist who thought the end of the world was coming – said his planned life of crime would “be exciting.”. “It won’t be boring and I don’t have to worry about Lynnettee or Kaylene and everything will be taken care of. It’ll just be me.” After his death, a search of bunker turned up a large cache of weapons, ammunition, body armor, food and thousands of dollars in cash. The video was among the evidence taken from the underground hideout and it was released by the sheriff’s office Thursday after the department announced its three-month investigation was completed, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. The video is “breathtaking in its evil,” said King County Sheriff Steve Strachan. He noted that Keller had been planning to kill his family for months – or even years – before the crime took place. Keller also planned ahead for his own death. “I do have my escape and that’s death,” he said with a laugh. “I can always shoot myself. I’m ok with that.” At least this crazy son-of-a-beyotch is in a better place…Hell. Image via AP Peep the video below.

Fugly Freakazoid: Foster Mother Charged With 15 Counts Of Rape Against Children! [Video]

Foster Mother Charged With 15 Counts Of Rape Against Children This lady not only looks sick… she is sick: A former foster parent has been indicted for rape and gross sexual imposition after investigators say she sexually assaulted children in her care. A Hamilton County grand jury has indicted Barbara Brooks, 62, on 15 counts of rape and three counts of gross sexual imposition. If convicted of all charges, she faces the possibility of spending the rest of her life in prison. Brooks is charged with sexually assaulting four different children she babysat between January 1, 2000 and February 27, 2007. The sexual assaults are alleged to have occurred in her homes in Mt. Healthy and Springfield Township. In April of 2011 two of the victims disclosed to the police that Brooks had sexually abused them while they were in her care. This started a police investigation that resulted in the indictment. According to the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office, Brooks worked as a licensed foster parent for the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services from July 1996 to December 2008. She was terminated as a foster parent in 2008 when JFS and the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department investigated allegations of sexual abuse. The charges could not be substantiated so no criminal charges resulted from that investigation. “These cases are always difficult to comprehend. We are glad that the victims had the courage to come forward so that we can make sure that Brooks is never in a position to care for children again,” said Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters. Turn the page to see her unhealthy looking self in court.

Prometheus Continues UK Reign at the Box Office

Prometheus held the box office throne in the United Kingdom last weekend. Madagascar 3 won’t have its British theatrical roll out until the fall of all things, so Prometheus had no big newcomers to contend with in the United Kingdom last weekend. The Ridley Scott directed feature took in £3.14M ($4.87M) in its second weekend, a 50 per cent drop. Still, its ten day total is £15.47M ($23.99M), just behind the complete cumulative for Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood which totaled £15.65M, according to figures by The Guardian. Men in Black 3 has had a bit of a rough go in the States, but it’s holding steady among the Brits, dropping a mild 16% in its third weekend, grossing £2.53M ($3.92M). Snow White and the Huntsman , meanwhile dropped only 15%, adding £5.96m ($8.68M) over the past seven days

Virginia Welch to Play Casey Anthony in Lifetime Movie; Holly DeVeaux Replaced

Casey Anthony’s getting a new look on Lifetime. A week into the filming of the network’s movie Imperfect Justice , the role of the woman acquitted of murdering her 2-year-old daughter has been re-cast. Holly DeVeaux has dropped out of the project and has been replaced by Virginia Welch, whose resume includes several independent films and commercials. According to a source close to the production, the decision for Holly DeVeaux to leave the production was mutual as both sides felt it wasn’t right. “Holly moved on; they recast the role ,” says a source close to the upcoming production. “This is one of those decisions that happens all the time.” “Holly was good and very talented; it just didn’t work.” Think Welch (above), will make a better Casey Anthony than DeVeaux (below)? We’ll have to wait and see, but the physical resemblance is there. Casting also includes The Office ‘s Oscar Nunez as defense attorney Jose Baez. Kevin Dunn and Marina Stephenson Kerr will play Anthony’s parents. Rob Lowe will play prosecutor Jeff Ashton. “It’s flattering,” Ashton recently joked. “They clearly weren’t going for someone who looks exactly like me.”
