Cory Booker: Can The Nation’s Most Energetic, Twitter-prolific Mayor Resuscitate New Jersey’s Largest City?

For press events, President Obama has the Rose Garden. Cory Booker has the Oprah machine — and Twitter. On a good day, Booker wins. Though mayor of a rather troubled city, Booker is as talented as Obama at cranking national headlines. Both he and the President are old hands at fielding questions from the national press corps. Both huddle with CEOs. Both have been called leaders of the “Oprah Winfrey wing of the Democratic Party.” But only Booker, the young and indefatigable mayor of Newark, New Jersey, has wielded a shovel to dig constituents out after a snowstorm, tackled a fleeing crime suspect as though he were on an opposing Super Bowl team, or appeared beside Oprah to break news about the charitable whims of a 26-year-old billionaire. And only Booker has been known to pump 15 Tweets per hour for a million followers of his 140-character messages, some of which include Bruce Springsteen lyrics, showing a keen aptitude for attracting fans of the Boss. In fact, Booker succeeds where every past Newark mayor failed. “You could say that he had very tiny shoes to fill,” said James Hughes, dean of the Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University. Booker’s predecessors acted more like candidates for prison than for higher office. Five of Newark’s last seven mayors have been indicted on criminal charges, including the last three — Hugh Addonizio, Kenneth Gibson and Sharpe James. “Booker,” Hughes added, “is one of Newark’s greatest resources.” But as talented, and telegenic, as Booker is, the fate of Newark is iffy. The Great Recession has rocked Newark. Poverty rules in its wards, along with piles of rubble and drug-infestation, and the city, now 54% black, is still licking wounds inflicted a generation ago during the race riots of 1967, which persuaded middle class residents to head for the hills. Combating crime was Booker’s first priority, and the city has made significant progress. Booker named a second-generation New York City cop, Garry McCarthy, as Newark police director, a move for which Booker took heat. (Long-time resident Amiri Baraka was so incensed by the appointment of a white police director in a predominantly black city that he reportedly gave the Mayor a book titled “How to Recover from the Addiction to White Supremacy.”) Read More At AtlantaPost.com

Waka Flocka Flame Released From Jail

Atlanta rapper posts bond Wednesday after turning himself in for weapons and drug charges. By Mawuse Ziegbe Waka Flocka Flame (file) Photo: Vallery Jean/ FilmMagic Waka Flocka Flame was released from custody Wednesday (January 5) after turning himself in for an array of weapons and drug charges earlier this week. Deputy Fielder of Georgia’s Henry County Sherriff’s Office confirmed to MTV News that the Atlanta rapper, born Juaquin Malphurs, was at released at 3:33 p.m. after posting $31,950 bond. Waka turned himself in to authorities Monday after his home was raided and his manager-mom Deb Antney and his So Icey mentor Gucci Mane were briefly detained. The “No Hands” rapper was booked on several charges, including possession of marijuana and hydrocodone, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and violation of probation for driving on a suspended license. Antney has told MTV News that despite reports the raid was part of an investigation into a prostitution organization, Waka was not involved in that type of activity. “It had nothing to do with prostitution,” Antney said last month. “The weapons they found were licensed weapons. There was under an ounce of marijuana, but it was nothing but a blunt. The other drugs were medication that was in Waka’s room from when he got hurt,” Antney said, referencing the “O Let’s Do It” spitter’s shooting in January 2010 . Waka has staunchly denied that he’s involved in any illegal activity, maintaining that he has no plans to dip into street dealings now that he’s a hitmaking hip-hop star. “Why would I rap and go try to street gang bang? That’s hustling backwards,” he insisted in December. “Why would I wanna rap all around the world and then go hit the streets and gang bang? I’m a rapper, I’m not a [gang-banger]. How can you gang bang and be a rapper? I don’t understand that. I would love to find out where their information is coming from. I can’t wait.” Related Videos Exclusive: Waka Flocka Flame Details Shooting Related Artists Waka Flocka Flame

Waka Flocka Flame Arrested On Drug, Weapons Charges

Arrest stems from a raid on his Atlanta home last month. By Kara Warner Waka Flocka Flame Photo: Henry County Sheriff’s Office Rapper Waka Flocka Flame turned himself in to authorities in Atlanta on Monday (January 3) following last month’s raid on his home . Flocka was booked on multiple charges, including possession of marijuana and hydrocodone, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and violation of probation for driving on a suspended license. According to TMZ , Waka’s mother and manager, Deb Antney, said the rapper turned himself in because “he wanted to do the right thing and didn’t want to run.” The rapper’s arrest stemmed from a warrant issued after a raid on his home in Atlanta last month, during which authorities were said to be investigating a prostitution organization but instead uncovered drugs and guns on the premises. Antney, who was home at the time of the raid, along with Waka associate Gucci Mane, fiercely denied the prostitution allegations. Although Antney and Mane were detained while police searched the home, neither party was charged. “It had nothing to do with prostitution,” Antney told MTV News. “The weapons they found were licensed weapons. There was under an ounce of marijuana, but it was nothing but a blunt. The other drugs were medication that was in Waka’s room from when he got hurt,” Antney said, referring to Waka Flocka Flame’s shooting last year . During a sit-down with radio station Hot 93.7 in Hartford, Connecticut, after the raid, Waka denied he was involved in any shady dealings, maintaining he has no plans to juggle life in the streets and the spotlight. “Why would I rap and go try to street gang bang? That’s hustling backwards. Why would I wanna rap all around the world and then go hit the streets and gang bang? I’m a rapper, I’m not a [gang-banger]. How can you gang-bang and be a rapper? I don’t understand that,” he said. “I would love to find out where their information is coming from. I can’t wait.” The “No Hands” rapper, whose real name is Juaquin Malphurs, is reportedly being held on $31,950 bond. A hearing is set for Tuesday. Related Artists Waka Flocka Flame

When Pigs Fly: 40-Year-Old King Latifah Wants To Be A Mommy In Ten Years

Can you imagine Latifah and her “trainer” pushing strollers around Hollyweird in a couple of years? According to a new interview, that’s exactly the move she’s trying to make. Latifah, who splits her time between New Jersey, Miami, and Los Angeles, says that in 10 years, she hopes to be “on cruise control, with a couple of kids under my belt.” Is she making a move in that direction? “It’s in the Lord’s hands.” Meanwhile, her overarching goal right now “is just to enjoy life more. I work a lot. I want to make sure I’m living life to the fullest and checking in with me.” We can’t help but try to imagine her pregnant now. Or do you think she’d find a surrogate or adopt? Here are some other interesting tidbits running through her mind and governing her life. FAMILY VALUES HUSTLE = SUCCESS Latifah took her early cues as a businesswoman from her family. “My grandfather owned a hardware store in Newark,” she says. “Just seeing him become successful and how it became a family business was always interesting to me. And if my brother and I wanted money in our pockets, we had to get jobs–my first was at 15, at Burger King. We had to come up with ways to create an income.” She avoided the routes that some neighborhood kids took. “Unfortunately, some of the brightest minds use that hustler spirit and apply it to becoming drug dealers. I didn’t want to be that person. It wasn’t a positive way to make money, and we all knew that it led to death or jail.” PAY ATTENTION AND ASK QUESTIONS “When it came time to be a professional rapper, I wouldn’t sign anything without reading it. There was no way I was going to have people make decisions for me or wake up one day and find that I was broke because I never bothered to read a contract. I wasn’t a lawyer, but I had a pretty good idea of what words meant, and things I didn’t understand I would ask about. Shakim [Compere, Latifah’s longtime business partner in Flavor Unit Entertainment] and I were like sponges. We listened and we observed people who were more successful than us.” ADMIT WHEN YOU’RE IN OVER YOUR HEAD “Our record label didn’t fly. I think we were loyal to a fault–we signed all these really talented artists who hadn’t made records yet, we were paying salaries for people working in our office, we were paying all the bills. We sank millions into our company, and we shouldn’t have done that.” Complicating matters, she was personally hit with a huge, unexpected bill from the I.R.S. “We had to say, ‘Enough is enough. This isn’t working right now.’” OPENING UP HELPS OTHERS COPE In her recent quasi-motivational book Put on Your Crown, Latifah wrote about adversities in her life–including being sexually abused as a child by a babysitter and losing her beloved older brother in a 1992 motorcycle accident–to share with others how she got through the dark times. “I think people can feel when you’re saying something from the heart, something truthful,” she says. “I don’t know how to do it any differently. Sometimes it’s just knowing what someone else has been through that strikes a chord, that helps other people get through their lives in a more full way.” Hmmm. Who knew she was such a fan of telling the truth and opening up. Source

Jesus Take The Wheel: Florida Father Stabs His Six-Year-Old Son After Watching Fireworks On New Year’s Eve

This is sad: A father has been accused of attempted murder after allegedly stabbing his six-year-old son more than 20 times. Police say Xavier Thomas knifed the boy, also called Xavier, after they had watched a New Year’s Eve fireworks display together near their home in Tampa, Florida. The boy was taken to St Joseph’s Hospital but his injuries are not said to be life-threatening. Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said Thomas was being held without bail in Hillsborough County jail. Today it emerged the alleged attacker had been suffering from psychiatric problems after watching two friends shot dead in separate incidents. His grandmother, Yvonne Mickles, said: ‘One of the boys died in his arms.’ She said of the attack on Xavier Jr: ‘That baby was an innocent bystander. I’ve talked to God and thanked God so much that he saved that baby, spared that baby’s life.’ Police say Thomas was not married to the boy’s mother and did not have custody of the child. Good thing little Xavier wasn’t hurt…hopefully big Xavier is getting some help…pronto!! Source
