The actors got married in Como on Saturday, after spending the week at George Clooney’s estate there. By Jocelyn Vena Emily Blunt and John Krasinski (file) Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Emily Blunt and John Krasinski , one of MTV News’ favorite pairs of 2009, made their cute-coupledom official on Saturday and got married in Italy, People.com confirms. The pair wed at the Villa D’este in Como, Italy, according to UsMagazine.com . They had been staying at George Clooney’s villa near Lake Como since Independence Day weekend. Clooney and girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis attended the private ceremony. Blunt wore a cream, chiffon, sweetheart-draped Marchesa gown with embroidered detail. “It was an outdoor ceremony and absolutely beautiful,” a source told UsMagazine.com. “It was an official ceremony. They are husband and wife.” The pair met in 2008 and got engaged in August 2009 to much fanfare, as Blunt joked to MTV News last year. Krasinski reportedly popped the question with a 3-carat Edwardian diamond and platinum ring from Neil Lane worth upwards of $100,000. “She’s a wonderful girl,” Krasinski has said the “Devil Wears Prada” star. “So many people say, ‘You know when you know,’ and it’s true. It’s all true.” Last December, while promoting “It’s Complicated,” Krasinski joked that his TV wedding on “The Office” was a “dry run” for the real thing. Leave your congratulatory messages for the pair in the comments!

Establishment Press Misses Rhode Island Parallel to Ariz. Immigration Law for Nearly Three Months

Preconceived notions are dangerous things in journalism. They cause one to assume facts that aren’t in evidence, leading to false or incomplete results. A classic example has played out in the nearly three months since Arizona passed its “1070 law.” Among other things, it mandates that law enforcement officials verify citizenship status in situations involving police contact if they have a reasonable suspicion that someone is not in the country legally. It seems that virtually everyone covering the story has been assuming that Arizona’s law is the first of its kind. Well, maybe as a “law” it is. But in Rhode Island, of all places, Boston Globe reporter Maria Sacchetti finally noticed on July 6 (HT Hot Air ) that police have been doing what Arizona will start doing on July 29 since 2008 as a result of a gubernatorial executive order: R.I. troopers embrace firm immigration role In contrast to Mass., they report all who are present illegally From Woonsocket to Westerly, the troopers patrolling the nation’s smallest state are reporting all illegal immigrants they encounter, even on routine stops such as speeding, to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, known as ICE. “There are police chiefs throughout New England who hide from the issue . . . and I’m not hiding from it,’’ said Colonel Brendan P. Doherty, the towering commander of the Rhode Island State Police. “I would feel that I’m derelict in my duties to look the other way.’’ Rhode Island’s collaboration with federal immigration authorities is controversial; critics say the practice increases racial profiling and makes immigrants afraid to help police solve crimes. But it is a practice that Governor Deval Patrick’s opponents in the governor’s race are urging Massachusetts to revive. The Patrick administration has staunchly opposed having state troopers enforce immigration laws, and shortly after he took office in 2007, the governor rescinded a pact by his predecessor, Mitt Romney, to assign 30 troopers to the so-called federal 287(g) program, which trains local police to enforce federal immigration law. … In 2008, Governor Donald L. Carcieri, a Republican, issued an executive order mandating immigration checks on all new state workers and ordering State Police to assist federal immigration officials. Sitting in his office in an old farmhouse off a country highway, Doherty said the State Police had collaborated with federal immigration officials before, but the relationship has become more formal in recent years. In 2007, he said, he trained all state troopers in how to deal with noncitizens because of widespread confusion and because Congress did not resolve the issue of illegal immigration. Troopers learned to notify consulates when noncitizens are arrested, how to recognize different forms of identification, and how to deal with different cultures. One can’t help but wonder how well Ms. Sacchetti or whoever came up with the idea of looking into Rhode Island’s posture is being treated in the Globe’s newsroom these days. Her bosses and the rest of the establishment press should be really be asking themselves why they didn’t bother to look into what other states are doing when the Arizona law passed. Or, worse if true, they should be justifying why parallels they did find (how could they have missed California, as noted by the NewsBusters staff on Friday ?) were somehow not worthy of coverage. Did they decide to not look at Rhode Island because “everybody knows” that such a liberal state couldn’t possibly be strictly enforcing immigration laws — when in fact it is? Clean Energy and Climate Bill Would Cut Deficit by $19 Billion: CBO

Photo via Wind Guys One of the persisting myths about comprehensive, carbon-pricing legislation is that it would cost the nation an arm and a leg to enact. This simply is not the case, as a recent bipartisan, independent analysis of the dying Kerry-Lieberman clean energy and climate bill reveals: The Congressional Budget Office found that passing the climate bill would trim the federal budget by $19 billion dollars over the next ten years. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Clean Energy and Climate Bill Would Cut Deficit by $19 Billion: CBO

CBO Notes YTD Deficit Tops $1 Trillion; Reality Is Much Worse

On Wednesday, the Congressional Budget Office released its Monthly Budget Review for June . It estimated that June’s deficit was “only” $69 billion, down from $94 billion last year, and that the deficit through nine months of the current fiscal year is $1.005 trillion, down from last year’s $1.087 trillion. June’s single-month improvement — or more properly stated, its less disastrous result — is probably legitimate, because collections have picked up a bit. But, as I noted in April (at NewsBusters ; at BizzyBlog ), the reported year-over-year deficit reduction, such as it is, has nothing to do with anything resembling control of government spending. What follows was my explanation at the time, which still holds, and which you will more than likely not see in any media coverage of the government’s financial situation when the Treasury Department releases its official monthly statement next week (also see the chart below the jump which shows what the deficit really is after adjustment): Most of the general public believes that the government is reporting its results on a cash basis, i.e., that “receipts” means “money that came in” and that “outlays” means “disbursements.” Until early last year, with one very small exception, that was the case. But that’s so pre-Obama. Since Treasury converted TARP and other bailout programs (with the exceptions of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac) to Net Present Value accounting last year, this is how things roll: When the government “lends or invests” in banks and auto companies, the monies disbursed are treated as “investments,” and are included in “outlays.” Assuming no impairment in value or collectability, there are no receipts when the original amounts “invested” are repaid. Interest or dividends received are treated as “receipts” (euphemistically called “transfers from the Federal Reserve” by our oh-so-transparent Treasury). But if it looks like some of the “invested” funds won’t be repaid, the government will write down the value of those investments to what it thinks will be repaid. If it overestimates the impairment, it revalues its investments upward, and reduces reported “outlays.” This is what happened in March, to the tune of $115 billion. In essence, what happened is that the administration pushed as much “bad news” (asset writedowns) as it could into last year’s financial reporting, since last year was going to be a disaster no matter what. But since they overdid it with the writedowns last year (“Gosh, how did that happen?”), they can make this year look better than it really has been. With that explanation as background, here is a comparison of what CBO presented with what things really look like when the $115 billion above is put in its proper place, i.e., last year (changed line items are in red boxes): Real spending is over 6% higher than last year’s already ridiculous total. The adjusted deficit after putting the accounting estimate described above where it belongs, has increased by over 15%. This will be important to remember, because if the Obama administration continues to suffer from its “Recovery Summer” delusion, you can expect to hear the President and his apparatchiks claim that they are already starting to reduct the deficit, and their statist-compliant establishment media buds to relay the “news” without skepticism. The truth is that they’re reducing nothing — except, the longer their fiscal mismanagement goes on, our capacity to respond to their continually building disaster. Cross-posted at BizzyBlog.com .

MRC-TV: Bozell Discusses Media’s Inattention to New Black Panther/Justice Dept. Story with Sean Hannity

The Obama/Holder Department of Justice closed down an investigation into voter intimidation on Election Day 2008 by the New Black Panther Party in Philadelphia. Yet the broadcast news media have been virtually silent on the matter, making it the first item in last night’s “Media Mash” segment on Fox News Channel’s “Hannity.” Noted NewsBusters publisher Brent Bozell: Here you had a whistleblower from the Department of Justice saying how Eric Holder, the Attorney General, and his office stepped in and stopped the prosecution of these Black Panther people. He claimed it was the easiest prosecution in his career. He said everything was on video, everything was on tape…. It was a slam dunk…. Look, the media are refusing to cover just how radical this attorney general is… “You have people in paramilitary uniforms, you know, spewing racial epithets at voters as they go into the polling place… obviously a case of voter intimidation. Still no coverage on ABC, CBS, NBC, several major newspapers in this country,” host Sean Hannity observed. In addition to this incident, Hannity and Bozell discussed the media blackout of NASA administrator Charles Bolden’s interview with al-Jazeera in which he stated his “foremost” objective assigned by the president was helping Muslim nations “feel good” about their “historic contribution” to “science, math and engineering.” For the full “Media Mash” segment, click here for MP3 audio or here for WMV video , or watch the video embedded above at right.

Women of The Daily Show Speak

Dear People Who Don't Work Here, Recently, certain media outlets have attempted to tell us what it's like to be a woman at The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. We must admit it is entertaining to be the subjects of such a vivid and dramatic narrative. However, while rampant sexism at a well-respected show makes for a great story, we want to make something very clear: the place you may have read about is not our office. The Daily Show isn't a place where women quietly suffer on the sidelines as barely tolerated tokens. On the contrary: just like the men here, we're indispensable. We generate a significant portion of the show's creative content and the fact is, it wouldn't be the show that you love without us. So, who are the women of The Daily Show? If you think the only women who help create this show are a couple of female writers and correspondents, you're dismissing the vast majority of us. Actually, we make up 40% of the staff, and we're not all shoved into the party-planning department (although we do run that, and we throw some kick-ass parties). We are co-executive producers, supervising producers, senior producers, segment producers, coordinating field producers, associate producers, editors, writers, correspondents, talent coordinators, production coordinators, researchers, makeup artists, the entire accounting and audience departments, production assistants, crew members, and much more. We were each hired because of our creative ability, our intelligence, and above all, our ability to work our asses off to make a great show. Is it hard to work at The Daily Show? Absolutely. When it comes to what makes it onto the show, competing ideas aren't just hashed out between the faces you see on camera or the names that roll under the “writers” credits. Jokes and concepts come from our studio department, our field department, our graphics department, our production department, our intern department, and our control room. Jon's rule is: the strongest idea and the funniest joke win every single time, no matter who pitches it–woman or man, executive producer or production assistant. And of course none of these jokes and ideas would get to air without the layers of production talent working behind the scenes. The fairness of our workplace makes competition tough and makes the show better. So if it's so challenging, why have we stayed for two, five, ten, fourteen years? Because it's challenging. We feel lucky to work in a meritocracy where someone with talent can join us as an intern and work her way up to wherever her strengths take her. But also because it's an environment that supports our being more than just our jobs. The Daily Show (to an extent few of us have seen elsewhere) allows us the flexibility to care for our families, pursue our own projects, cope with unexpected crises, and have lives outside the show. Also… are you kidding? It's The Daily Show for Christ's sake. You ask some stupid questions, imaginary interlocutor. What's Jon Stewart really like? Jon's not just a guy in a suit reading a prompter. His voice and vision shape every aspect of the show from concept to execution. The idea that he would risk compromising his show's quality by hiring or firing someone based on anything but ability, or by booking guests based on anything but subject matter, is simply ludicrous. But what's he really like? Well, for a sexist prick, he can be quite charming. He's also generous, humble, genuine, compassionate, fair, supportive, exacting, stubborn, goofy, hands-on, driven, occasionally infuriating, ethical, down-to-earth and–a lot of people don't know this–surprisingly funny (for a guy brimming with “joyless rage”). How else to describe him? What's the word that means the opposite of sexist? That one. In any organization, the tone is set from the top. Since taking over the show, Jon has worked hard to create an environment where people feel respected and valued regardless of their gender or position. If that's not your scene, you probably wouldn't like it here. We happen to love it. And so… And so, while it may cause a big stir to seize on the bitter rantings of ex-employees and ignore what current staff say about working at The Daily Show, it's not fair. It's not fair to us, it's not fair to Jon, it's not fair to our wonderful male colleagues, and it's especially not fair to the young women who want to have a career in comedy but are scared they may get swallowed up in what people label as a “boy's club.” The truth is, when it comes down to it, The Daily Show isn't a boy's club or a girl's club, it's a family – a highly functioning if sometimes dysfunctional family. And we're not thinking about how to maximize our gender roles in the workplace on a daily basis. We're thinking about how to punch up a joke about Glenn Beck's latest diatribe, where to find a Michael Steele puppet on an hour's notice, which chocolate looks most like an oil spill, and how to get a gospel choir to sing the immortal words, “Go f@#k yourself!” added by: onemalefla

Illegals rob elderly citizen, citizen fires gun, prosecutors charge the citizen–and not the illegals

This is a CLASSIC example of how, in cities like Denver where the politicians have promoted sanctuary city policies, illegal aliens are given more rights than citizens. There is a local news video on the page below: http://www.kdvr.com/news/kdvr-elderly-man-shoots-thieves-txt,0,1105363.story *** Elderly man facing serious charges for shooting at thieves Julie Hayden Investigative Reporter 7:22 PM MDT, July 7, 2010 WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. – Legal analyst Dan Recht said he believes the Jefferson County District Attorney is “seriously overcharging” a Wheat Ridge homeowner, accused of attempted first degree murder for shooting at two thieves. 82-year-old Robert Wallace said he fired two shots at two men when they tried to run him over while stealing his flatbed trailer. Wallace now faces twelve felony counts, including four counts of attempted first degree murder, for what he described as an act of defending his property and his life. If convicted, he could spend the rest of his life in prison. One of the thieves, Damacio Torres later admitted to the theft. He and his partner in crime, Alvara Cardano both have prior arrest records and are believed to be in the country illegally. But they are not facing any charges. Recht said, in his experience, prosecutors overcharge cases to force a person to plea bargain. He argued that it's just not right to put a person through that kind of mental and financial stress. Jefferson County DA, Scott Storey, indicated he'll take a closer look at his office's decision to throw the book at the homeowner and hinted the charges could be reduced. He said the investigation continues into the confessed thieves. *** There are additional details you need to know: 1) the two illegal aliens had many prior arrests for theft. At one point recently they stole a $60,000 piece of farm equipment on a trailer in a very similar theft. 2) investigators said they believe the two criminals are part of a car theft ring, and wanted the trailer for additional thefts. 3) the driver of the truck was hit by a bullet and is now paralized, and wants to sue the elderly man “for everything he has” 4) First Degree Murder is a capital punishment offense, so this 82 year old gentleman could go to jail for the rest of his life or even receive the death penalty for defending his life and property. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070817192825AAdnJoq 5) In interviews on Denver radio programs, local defense lawyers, former prosecutors and former Congressmen in colorado have stated that had the “victims” been anything other than illegal immigrants, Mr Wallace would not be charged at all. 6) the prosecuting attorneys have pressed NO CHARGES against the illegal immigrant theives. O’Brien receives a surprise Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series nomination for his now-defunct ‘Tonight Show.’ By Jocelyn Vena Cory Monteith, Heather Morris, Mark Salling and Lea Michele of “Glee” Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Bright and early Thursday morning (July 8), “Modern Family” star Sofia Vergara, who is up for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series at the Emmy Awards this year, and “The Soup” and “Community” star Joel McHale joined forces to announce the nominees in the major categories of the Primetime Emmy Awards, which are set to air on NBC August 29 with Jimmy Fallon on hand to host the show. The contenders in the Outstanding Comedy Series category include “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” fan favorite “Glee,” “Modern Family,” “Nurse Jackie,” “The Office” and “30 Rock.” Lead actors and actresses nominated for their work in comedy series include Amy Poehler, Alec Baldwin, Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Jim Parsons, Larry David, Tony Shalhoub, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Edie Falco, Toni Collette, and Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison from “Glee.” It seems these days, no awards show is complete without giving some love to vampires, so this time around “True Blood” earned an Outstanding Drama Series nomination. Other nominees for Outstanding Leads in drama series include Brian Cranston, Michael C.
