Republican Congressman James Lankford of Oklahoma received a verbal lashing at a town hall meeting on Tuesday from a man upset with the National Security Agency’s surveillance program. “The DEA and the IRS are getting information from the NSA and using it to frame American citizens and then lying about where they got the information,” Dax Ewbank of Oklahoma City said at the event. “This is what is happening. Now, what happens if the government becomes politically against my belief system or my lifestyle?” youtube

The Discovery Channel series Storm Chasers is mourning the loss of its own this weekend. On Friday, Tim Samaras, his son Paul and co-worker Carl Young were among nine who died when a tornado made its way through El Reno, Oklahoma. Samaras founded TWISTEX, the Tactical Weather Instrumented Sampling in Tornadoes Experiment, and that company released a statement on its Facebook page in light of the tragic news: “This is a devastating loss to the meteorological, research, and storm chasing communities. I ask that you keep the families in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time. There is some comfort in knowing these men passed on doing what they loved.” Discovery also sent along its “thoughts and prayers” to the families of Samaras and Young, while tonight’s documentary – Mile Wide Tornado: Oklahoma Disaster – will be dedicated to their memories. Friday’s storm, of course, was the second natural catastrophe to hit the region this month. The town of Moore, Oklahoma was devastated two weeks ago when a tornado killed over 20 residents.

Matt Kemp of the L.A. Dodgers is doing what he can and more to help Oklahoma tornado victims in his home state, pledging $250,000 and then some. The quarter-million pledge comes after Kemp, inexplicably, received backlash when he promised to give $1,000 for every home run he hit this spring. Kemp, of course, has hit only two so far this year in what has been a disappointing campaign, leading to the obligatory jokes and childish criticism. Until the Oklahoma native, announced plans to go far beyond that initial pledge. Far, far beyond it. The baseball star said in a statement Wednesday: “Dear Families of OKC, on Monday, out of concern and emotion I committed $1,000.00 for every home run I hit until the All-Star Break.” “It was a quick and small gesture in advance of what I knew would be my greater contribution through your rebuilding process.” “I am keeping my pledge and in addition, donating $250,000.00. May God bless you through this and the many generous donations coming to your aid. “Sincerely, Matt Kemp #PrayforOklahoma” Cynics, of course, will say that public sniping got to him, but the 28-year-old seems like a man of his word who would absolutely do what he can. Did you see what Matt Kemp did for that fan just this month? Enough said. He’s a standup guy, people, even if he is only hitting .265 in 2013.

Soulja Boy’s Bentley was recently impounded by the LAPD thanks to photos that appear to implicate him (or at least the car) in a serious hit-and-run. Back on January 9, a motorcyclist struck a red Bentley in Hollywood, leaving the biker seriously injured. The Bentley’s driver fled the scene, however. It is believed that its driver made a reckless turn that caused the crash. In any case, a friend of the biker went back to the scene to look around. That’s when he met a valet at Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles who said that he knew the car well, and that it belonged to Soulja Boy. The witness then went to the police, who tapped into their secret database of photos taken by thousands of hidden cameras every day (seriously). In fact, TMZ reports there are private companies that exist solely to convince L.A. citizens and businesses to mount cameras for the database. The average L.A. car, supposedly, is photographed 1,000 times. A day. Back to the topic at hand, police easily got the license plate number of Soulja Boy’s Bentley, ran it through the database and the plot thickened. The crash itself was not captured on video, but images of the Bentley showing damage that corresponded to the accident did show up in photos. Soulja Boy’s Bentley is currently damage-free, and police believe the rapper had the car repaired on the DL to cover up any incriminating evidence. Police got a warrant, believing they had probable cause to believe the Bentley was involved in the accident, and have since impounded the car. Police would still like more evidence, but it’s amazing the kinds of things they can pull from cameras you didn’t even know were filming your every move. Cue ominous, dramatic music.

Ricky Gervais has created quite a bit of controversy over his reaction to the reaction of other people in the face of this week’s Oklahoma tornado. The comedian – who dared to mock Justin Bieber last month – retweeted an MTV News message Tuesday that read: “Beyonce, Rihanna & Katy Perry send prayers to #Oklahoma #PrayForOklahoma.” He wrote along with it: “I feel like an idiot now… I only sent money.” Gervais then included the following hashtag/message on his account: “You can support #Moore response by txting REDCROSS to 90999 to give $10, or online at redcross.org #ActuallyDoSomethingForOklahoma.” The comedian, a well-known atheist, drew criticism for making fun of those who were praying for the victims, but he was undeterred, Tweeting again yesterday: “Praying for something but not doing anything to make it happen has the same effect as writing to Santa & not letting mummy read the letter.” Gervais concluded that “the best way to help the disaster victims” was through monetary donations. Do you agree? Which should be send to Oklahoma residents? Prayers Money Why can’t it be both? View Poll »

Welp… The CBS writer we told you was in hot water for pointing out some pudge on a pom pom girl no longer writes for CBS. Via NY Daily News : The CBS Houston blogger who publicly ridiculed an NBA cheerleader for her weight has been fired, according to reports. CBS Sports Radio confirmed to News 9 in Oklahoma City that a digital content manager had been fired — but it wouldn’t say if it was Anna-Megan Raley, who’s accused of writing last week’s offensive post about Thunder Girl Kelsey Williams. The article, written under the supposed pen name Claire Crawford, asked readers if Williams is “too chunky” to cheer for the Oklahoma City Thunder basketball team. Crawford pointed out “pudginess” around the blond bombshell’s waist and urged readers to weigh in. Commenters weren’t amused — most chastised the author for the rude post and called for her termination. The article, posted Monday morning after the Houston Rockets lost an NBA playoffs game to the Oklahoma City Thunder, was quickly deleted. CBS hasn’t confirmed whether Williams, whose Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn accounts have been deleted, is indeed the author of the uncouth post. Do you think they were too hard on her or was she just a mean old bully asking to have her check snatched? AP
