We Taking Over: White Folks Are Becoming Less Of A Majority

Rush Limbaugh’s greatest fear is a lot closer to coming true than even he probably ever imagined. Via the New York Times Whites continued to decline as a share of the American population in 2009, and they now represent less than half of all 3-year-olds, according to a Brookings Institution analysis of census data released Monday. The country’s young population is more diverse than ever, with whites now in the minority in nursery schools, preschools and kindergartens in eight states — Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico and Texas — and the District of Columbia, according to William H. Frey, a demographer at Brookings. That was up from six states in 2000. “We are on our way to having a majority of minority students in U.S. schools,” Mr. Frey said. Nationally, whites accounted for 58.8 percent of all school enrollment in 2009, Mr. Frey said, citing the new data, which measured enrollment from preschool to graduate school as of October 2009. That was down from 64.6 percent in 2000, a decline that came with falling birthrates as the white population aged. Population growth has come instead from Hispanics, blacks and Asians, whose children represent ever larger shares of the school population. Twenty-three percent of children in kindergarten were Hispanic in 2009, up from 18 percent in 2000 and 10 percent in 1989. Hispanics now account for nearly a fifth of all enrollment from nursery school through college, Mr. Frey said. The United States has been experiencing the biggest surge of immigrants since the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when European immigrants considerably expanded the population. And while immigrants have long taken to cities, more recently they have spread throughout the nation, creating diverse student populations in places that had been overwhelmingly white. The states whose white children dipped to below 50 percent of nursery school and kindergarten enrollment most recently were Arizona, Florida and Nevada, Mr. Frey said. Next in line are Georgia, Louisiana and Maryland, he said. The increase in minority students in schools doesn’t mean our children are getting a better education yet. And the people who worry about these things are in no rush to change that. The gap between the country’s diverse young population and its older white one is raising difficult issues for policy makers, who are trying to balance the growing costs associated with the aging white population with the need for financing to educate an increasingly diverse youth. Education experts who have studied the issue say the United States is lagging behind in educating minority students. The past big wave of immigrants took more than a generation to integrate into the economy through education, they say, a delay the country can still afford in today’s age of global competitiveness. “These students will be an important source of our labor-force growth as baby boomers begin retiring,” Mr. Frey said. Is this good news to you?

Breaking News: The Majority Of The Ruling Party In Egypt Has Resigned!

Alright, alright, there’s some progress being made, hopefully Hosni Mubarak realizes that its a wrap and throws in the towel soon. CAIRO — The top leadership body of Egypt’s ruling party resigned today, including the president’s son, but the regime appeared to be digging in its heels, calculating that it can ride out street demonstrations and keep President Hosni Mubarak in office. The ruling party leaders who resigned included the country’s most powerful political figures — and its most unpopular among many Egyptians. The move may have been aimed at convincing protesters in the streets that the regime is sincere in implementing democratic reforms they demand. But State TV, announcing the resignations, still identified head of state Mubarak as president of the ruling party in a sign he would remain in authority. And Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq said Saturday that stability was returning to the country, appearing confident that a deal on future reforms can be reached with the multiple opposition movements to defuse protests without the 82-year-old Mubarak necessarily leaving power immediately. Protesters have refused to end their mass rallies in downtown Tahrir Square until Mubarak quits. Tens of thousands gathered today in Tahrir, waving flags and chanting a day after some 100,000 massed there in an intensified demonstration labeled “the day of departure,” in hopes it would be the day Mubarak leaves. Their unprecedented 12-day movement has entered a delicate new phase. Organizers fear that without the pressure of protesters on the street, Mubarak’s regime will enact only cosmetic reforms and try to preserve its grip on power. So they are reluctant to lift their demonstrations without the concrete gain of Mubarak’s ouster and a transition mechanism that guarantees a real move to democracy afterward. Mubarak has insisted he will remain in his post until the end of his term in his autumn. In the meantime, the government has sought to draw opposition parties and the youth groups involved in the protests into immediate negotiations on constitutional reforms so presidential elections can be held in September to replace Mubarak. Protest organizers, wary of a trap, have refused until Mubarak goes. A key question will be whether they can maintain enthusiasm and continue to rally large numbers. Some in Tahrir greeted the new concession of ruling party resignations with with scorn. Wael Khalil, a 45-year-old activist, said it would “reinforce their (protersers’) resolve and increase their confidence because it shows that they are winning, and the regime is retreating inch by inch.” We here at Bossip would encourage all the people of Egypt to hold tight to your convictions and do not let up until the government gives you exactly what you want! Wonder what it would take for the people of the U.S. to stand and be heard in this same fashion? Source

Stop Blaming The Victim

Recently I spoke to my cousin, who lives in Alabama, on the phone and he flatly said, “you won’t believe the sh** that happened to me.” He starts telling me about this pretty young thing he met in the club Saturday night. He spared no details; apparently, with a body like hers she should compete with Buffie the Body for the Horse Award. They exchanged numbers and planned to meet up the next day. The next day they spoke on the phone and set up a time to get together at her place. When he pulls up in front of her house he hears a bunch of commotion, sounds like some sort of domestic dispute. Things are crashing in the house; but he ignores it. Ms. Fatbooty, as Mos Def would call her, is not picking up her phone either. Again he hears a big boom. Before he could blink, the door opens up and there stands a man throwing a suitcase and the pretty young thing from the club out the door. She’s in a t-shirt sans underwear; she looks over to my cousin and then turns back to the door, banging so that the man will let her back in. My cousin, not wanting to end up in an episode of ‘where keeping it real goes wrong’, pulled off and then called the police. Later on when he spoke to her, she said the man gave her a black eye, apparently he beat the young lady up pretty bad. Continued at HipHopWired.com
