No Justice: Officer Who Murdered Akai Gurley Will Not Face Any Jail Time

Akai Gurley’s Killer Will Not Face Jail Time After “accidentally” shooting Akai Gurley as he walked home — simply because he couldn’t see who was coming around the corner — a judge has ruled that convicted killer Peter Liang will not face any prison time. Instead, Liang was sentenced to six months house arrest, 500 hours of community service and five years’ probation. Via NYDN : The rookie cop convicted of killing an unarmed black man in the stairwell of a Brooklyn housing project won’t spend even one night in jail for the crime. “This is bull—-! The system is f—ed up,” one spectator snapped after Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Danny Chun sentenced Peter Liang to five years’ probation and 800 hours of community service for the fatal shooting of Akai Gurley. “Akai’s life doesn’t matter,” Gurley’s aunt, Hertencia Petersen, fumed. “Another black man has been murdered by the hands of the Police Department. And the officer is not being held accountable.” Outside the courthouse, scores of angry protesters chanted “The whole damn system is guilty as hell!” At the same time, about 100 of the cop supporters yelled “Justice for Liang!” The mild-mannered Liang showed little emotion when he learned his fate – or when he pleaded his case to the judge, saying he regretted the “devastation” he caused when his gun went off in the dimly lit stairwell. “I was in shock. I could barely breathe. The shot was accidental, but someone was dead,” he said. “My life is forever changed. I hope I have a chance to rebuild it.” So an officer can shoot a Black man dead for simply walking home to his own apartment and face not a single day of jail time? Clearly it is open season on African Americans as far as the police force is concerned… NYDN

Graphic & Difficult Footage To Watch: The Death Of Elliott Williams By Tulsa Pigs (Left To Suffer) [Video]

NYDailyNews : Elliott Earl Williams, a 37-year-old veteran who was critically injured and mentally ill, should’ve never been taken to an Oklahoma jail on Oct. 21, 2011. In fact, every local jail in America is woefully unprepared to handle men, women or children with severe mental illnesses or critical injuries. In instance after instance when those who are battling hardships are taken to jails instead of hospitals, criminal abuse, negligence and death are too often the result. Guards, who often lack college educations but who can slam doors shut with the best of them, are a bad excuse for doctors, nurses or mental health counselors. But we already knew this. Here we are, though — stuck in an endless cycle in which African Americans like Natasha McKenna, Jamaycheal Mitchell, Sandra Bland, Gynnya McMillen and Elliott Williams were taken to local jails alive and came out in body bags because of the inhumane indifference to their well-being. When we say “Black Lives Matter,” we utter the phrase because so many of their names and stories speak volumes about a system that often claims otherwise. After a painful day in which Williams was witnessed mumbling to himself, tearing up grass and dirt with his hands, talking out loud to God and randomly throwing food, it was obvious that he was having a mental health crisis. He told police he was suicidal when they arrived. They arrested him and took him to jail anyway. During the arrest, police were witnessed forcefully putting their knee into his spine. Elliott’s father, Earl, said that his son appeared to struggle to walk when they lifted him up and instead let his feet drag. That too, has been seen before. When Baltimore Police arrested Freddie Gray, he was witnessed by a dozen people screaming in pain and unable to move his feet. Baltimore law, like most cities, requires injured people to be taken to the hospital. What happened to Williams between that moment on Oct. 22 and the moment he died five days later is criminal. For days on end, Williams complained to anyone and everyone who would listen that he was critically injured and could no longer move his legs or anything at all below his neck. He urinated and defecated on himself. He writhed in pain and begged every guard and nurse there to take him seriously. They wrapped him garbage bags and dumped him in the shower, where he still did not move, face down in the shower. That was the first day. Morning, noon and night this continued. Nurses and staff put water just beyond his reach to see if he would move to get it. He didn’t. They still claimed he was faking it. On Oct. 23, Williams never moved. On Oct. 24, Williams never moved. On Oct. 25, Williams never moved. On Oct. 26, Williams never moved. On Oct. 27, Williams never moved. In fact, he never moved again, but appeared to have seizures. They claimed he faked them. He screamed for help, begging the staff to “cut it out of him,” and had arm movements that suggested a critical brain injury. Finally, on Oct. 27, officials dragged Williams’ limp body to a holding cell with a camera in it. That is the footage we have included here. Just watch his feet. For hours on end, they don’t move even an inch. Of course they don’t. He’s paralyzed. While there on the floor for hours, staff throw water at him, look at him, and continue to ignore the fact that they have a paralyzed man on the floor of their jail. NYDAILYNEWS.com

Fair Or Foul? Brooklyn DA Requests House Arrest, Five Years Probation For Cop Convicted In Akai Gurley Manslaughter

Is House Arrest A Fair Sentence For Cop Who Killed Unarmed Black Man? We ain’t feeling this at all… After a Brooklyn jury made a historic decision to convict a police officer in the killing of an unarmed black man , now a prosecutor is looking to let the former cop basically off the hook. According to NY Daily News reports : Jurors expressed shock and dismay Friday over Brooklyn District Attorney Kenneth Thompson’s recommendation of a no-jail sentence for the ex-NYPD cop who killed Akai Gurley. “What was the point of prosecuting him?” asked a 62-year-old juror who requested anonymity. “What did we do this for?” “I agree he doesn’t deserve tremendous time,” the juror added, “but if something is wrong, you shouldn’t get a slap on the wrist.” Former Officer Peter Liang faces up to 15 years in prison after he was convicted of manslaughter in the November 2014 slaying of Gurley, 28. The unarmed father was mortally wounded when a bullet fired by Liang ricocheted into his chest inside a darkened stairwell at the Pink Houses in East New York. We get it that he didn’t intentionally kill Gurley, but that hasn’t stopped other people guilty of accidental shootings from serving time. In fact, the juror who spoke out had a relative convicted of a similar shooting: The 62-year-old juror noted that his own father served more than seven years in prison for accidentally shooting a friend. “You cannot put away the average person’s thoughts here just because they are police officers,” the juror said. “They deserve to be prosecuted and sentenced just like everyone else who has the same background or committed the same crime.” Thompson has been under attack from Gurley’s loved ones and supporters since he sent a letter to the sentencing judge recommending Liang perform 500 hours of community service, five years’ probation and home confinement for six months. The Brooklyn resident said he believes Thompson was swayed by pressure from the Asian community, which vigorously protested the charges brought against Liang. “I think the Asian community played a lot with the DA’s decision and got to him,” the juror said. What do you think? How much do you believe race played a factor in the DA’s decision? Facebook/AP

19 Officers Respond After White Neighbor Makes Burglary Call On Santa Monica Woman Locked Out Of Her Own Apartment

Neighbor Makes Burglary Call To Cops On Black Woman Entering Her Own Apartment You guys remember when Skip Gates had a run-in with the cops outside his house? Well apparently that wasn’t an anomaly. We were moved to tears by a recent tale shared by a black female executive named Fay Wells in the Washington Post . In her essay Wells recounts the events of Sept. 6, 2015 when she accidentally locked herself out of her apartment. She was late getting to her soccer game, so she decided to deal with it afterwards. A few hours later she called a locksmith and had just entered her apartment when things got noisy outside: I heard barking. I approached my front window and loudly asked what was going on. Peering through my blinds, I saw a gun. A man stood at the bottom of the stairs, pointing it at me. I stepped back and heard: “Come outside with your hands up.” I thought: This man has a gun and will kill me if I don’t come outside. At the same time, I thought: I’ve heard this line from policemen in movies. Although he didn’t identify himself, perhaps he’s an officer. I left my apartment in my socks, shorts and a light jacket, my hands in the air. “What’s going on?” I asked again. Two police officers had guns trained on me. They shouted: “Who’s in there with you? How many of you are there?” I said it was only me and, hands still raised, slowly descended the stairs, focused on one officer’s eyes and on his pistol. I had never looked down the barrel of a gun or at the face of a man with a loaded weapon pointed at me. In his eyes, I saw fear and anger. I had no idea what was happening, but I saw how it would end: I would be dead in the stairwell outside my apartment, because something about me — a 5-foot-7, 125-pound black woman — frightened this man with a gun. I sat down, trying to look even less threatening, trying to de-escalate. I again asked what was going on. I confirmed there were no pets or people inside. I told the officers I didn’t want them in my apartment. I said they had no right to be there. They entered anyway. One pulled me, hands behind my back, out to the street. The neighbors were watching. Only then did I notice the ocean of officers. I counted 16. They still hadn’t told me why they’d come. And this is exactly why there are such issues in this country. You can’t tell us that if this woman were white she would have been treated like this. They didn’t ask or explain anything!!! I learned that the Santa Monica Police Department had dispatched 19 officers after one of my neighbors reported a burglary at my apartment. It didn’t matter that I told the cops I’d lived there for seven months, told them about the locksmith, offered to show a receipt for his services and my ID. It didn’t matter that I went to Duke, that I have an MBA from Dartmouth, that I’m a vice president of strategy at a multinational corporation. It didn’t matter that I’ve never had so much as a speeding ticket. It didn’t matter that I calmly, continually asked them what was happening. It also didn’t matter that I didn’t match the description of the person they were looking for — my neighbor described me as Hispanic when he called 911. What mattered was that I was a woman of color trying to get into her apartment — in an almost entirely white apartment complex in a mostly white city — and a white man who lived in another building called the cops because he’d never seen me before. The plot thickens too. Once the confusion was sorted out Wells became pretty irate, asking for the names and badge numbers of the officers who responded. She also confronted her dumb neighbor, who wasn’t even apologetic: I introduced myself to the reporting neighbor and asked if he was aware of the gravity of his actions — the ocean of armed officers, my life in danger. He stuttered about never having seen me, before snippily asking if I knew my next-door neighbor. After confirming that I did and questioning him further, he angrily responded, “I’m an attorney, so you can go f— yourself,” and walked away. SMH. We’re not sure who is worse — the racist nebby neighbor or the overly aggressive racist cops. We hope that Wells gets some kind of justice — an investigation by the SMPD internal affairs, an apology, something. She’s suffered some pretty severe anxiety and trauma as a result of this incident so we hope she is able to get some relief from that very soon. Still, this is pretty scary because it really could be any of us, and it really could have gone terribly wrong. Shutterstock

SMH: NYPD Cop Stole Nekkid Photos Of Woman After Jailing Her For Traffic Stop

New York Officer Steals Private Photos From Woman’s Phone A New York woman has filed suit against an NYPD officer who stole over 20 explicit photos and five freaky videos from her phone during an arrest. Funnily enough…the cop can’t find anyone to fight for his side on the case. Via MailOnline : A New York City police officer accused of sending a suspect’s nude photos to his personal cell phone is reportedly having trouble finding a lawyer. The city’s Law Department has refused to represent Officer Sean Christian in federal court and the police union has also decided not defend him. Pamela Held, 29, filed a lawsuit last year that the officer accessed 20 explicit photos and five videos in 2013, when she was taken in to a Queens precinct for charges that were later dropped. Held was pulled over for lacking an inspection sticker in February of that year, and later processed for misdemeanor drug charges after officers found prescription drugs in her car. The charges were eventually dropped, but, according to her complaint, she gave the police the code to unlock her iPhone so they could see she had been texting her friend. She said she only received it back when she was released from custody six hours after being pulled over. Held and lawyer Richard Soleymanzadeh said that when she got it back, she saw that pictures and videos meant for her boyfriend had been sent on three separate occasions from her phone to a number belonging to Christian. The Long Island woman contacted NYPD Internal Affairs, who set up a recorded phone call between Held and Christian, during which the officer allegedly flirted with her and said that he had the photos. The police union must KNOW this case is a lost cause if they won’t even defend this creep. SMH. Cops get away with much worse, but this guy had to know that stealing freaky snaps from a woman he arrested would come back to bite him… Facebook
