Alec Baldwin Blames Anthony Weiner Scandal on… Technology?

Alec Baldwin has an interesting, even somewhat sympathetic, take on the Anthony Weiner scandal, which reached new, disgusting heights this week upon the release of the Congressman’s bare penis pic . In a piece for The Huffington Post , Baldwin delved into the way technology has shaped human behavior and wrote : “For high functioning men like Weiner and other officials who have lived through such scandals, who are constantly on the go, that leaves one tried and true source of a reliable high. The affirmation that comes when someone lets you know they want to sleep with you. Or even cyber-sleep with you.” Smart phones and social networks have opened the door for busy individuals to receive the kind of gratification they aren’t receiving at home, Baldwin argues: “Appointment sex with your spouse doesn’t always arrive when you need it most. A modern cell phone, loaded with contacts of willing fellow players, has a table with a red checkered table cloth ready for you at virtually any time.” Baldwin doesn’t go so far as to absolve Weiner of his wrongdoing, but he does paint the politician as a “modern human being” who gave in to the temptation right at his fingertips. Literally. “We tell ourselves that these devices help us communicate more effectively,” the actor wrote. “What they actually do is allow us to bypass the person lying right next to us, across the room from us or at an airport heading home to us, in order to meet our immediate, even inconvenient, needs. To bypass their moods, their current view of us and their own desires, or lack thereof.” In this case, that would be Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin. She’s pregnant with the couple’s first child . “I’m sad for him, his family, his district and his colleagues,” Baldwin concluded. What do you think of the 30 Rock star’s take? It’s a nuanced point of view, one that appears to let Weiner off the hook, but is actually meant to touch upon larger societal issues and how technology can play a negative role in our lives. Friends say Baldwin is considering a run for New York City Mayor in 2013. [Photos: WENN.com]

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Host on Heidi Montag Casting Pitch: Stab Me First

To say The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills host Andy Cohen isn’t a fan of bringing Heidi Montag on board the Bravo series would be a safe assumption. In response to Heidi lobbying to join the Housewives next season, Cohen said he’d rather “stab knives into my own eyes.” Tell us how you really feel . Naturally, this opened the door for Montag to whine to People , and she did. “Andy’s tasteless remarks were hurtful and completely unnecessary,” Montag said, denying her comments were serious. “I was simply being playful.” “I’m aware I’m not the right demo for that show, but Andy Cohen took it to a malicious place. I have always been a fan of the Housewives franchise.” “I don’t appreciate being bullied.” The harsh comments came from Cohen on his Watch What Happens Live late night talk show. Cohen also called Heidi and Spencer Pratt “delusional,” for a Tweet that implied that she was in talks to appear on the show’s second season. The same can be said of her belief that she has musical talent.

Pair of Women to Sue Dr. Phil For Locking Them in House With Naked Dude

Several women are suing TV doctor personality Dr. Phil, claiming he traumatized them by trapping them in a house and forcing them to look at a naked man. Somewhere, Brett Favre is jealous he didn’t think of this. Four years ago, six individuals, including plaintiffs Crystal Matchett and Shirley Dieu , were invited to a house as Phil’s “dinner guests.” Worst. Dinner. Ever. The invitation was part of a Big Brother-esque type episode where these individuals were secured in a ” mock house ” with no contact from the outside world. On the third night, the women opened the door to their “house” to find a naked man. The women then hid in a room and allegedly asked to leave. The TV crew laughed at them and promptly refused. We don’t know what the point of the sequestration or naked dude was, but we look forward to hearing Phil’s explanation for it in response to the lawsuit. When the two ladies originally filed their lawsuits last year, CBS filed an anti-SLAPP motion, arguing that Dr. Phil’s conduct was protected free speech. However, a circuit court denied the motion, asserting that what was shown on Dr. Phil’s show is considered “entertainment,” not of “public interest.” Therefore, it doesn’t qualify for protection under the 1st Amendment. But because the women both signed contracts with the show, an appeals court this morning that they could not sue CBS for negligence. However … They may sue in a lower court, which include fraud, misrepresentation, breach of fiduciary duty, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. According to a source, this rule demonstrates “a likelihood” that the women will win their case. Oh, guess what, too? It’s YOUR FAULT, PHIL!!

AP: ‘Famed Flight Attendant … Captured the Nation’s Imagination’

The Essential Global News Network’s fascination with Steven Slater continues. Mr. Slater (picture at right is from his Facebook page) is the JetBlue flight attendant who reportedly “grabbed the plane’s intercom and made an expletive-laced speech, grabbed a beer from the galley, opened the door and slid down the emergency evacuation chute.” Slater was charged with “criminal mischief and reckless endangerment.” Three weeks ago (covered at NewsBusters ; at BizzyBlog ), Associated Press writer Samantha Gross rhapsodized over how Slater’s actions had fulfilled “a working man’s fantasy … rekindled memories of workers’ liberation … (and) sparked wistful excitement among workers who have long fantasized of choosing pride over pay.” Before getting to the AP’s latest sympathetic piece, let’s take a look at something originally associated with a magazine report about Slater that is not currently present in that story. In a Google Web search on “Steven Slater” (not in quotes), here is the sixth result returned: Really? But when you go to the referenced People Magazine article , the statement cited in the result isn’t there, nor, as best I can tell, is it in the readers’ comments. Perhaps the statement was never written, but I doubt it, as the Internet has a funny way of leaving tracks. A search on the exact sentence involved (“On his Facebook and MySpace pages, he boasted about flying high and taking a five year break from the skies” — entered with quotes) returned 15 items (Google’s header says it’s 130, but it’s really 15, before adding “similar items”). Was everyone who noted this, especially this link , which appears to have captured People’s RSS feed, just making it up? With that little nugget as background, here is selected text from an unbylined AP story early this morning reporting that Slater will not be getting his job back (bolds are mine): Sometimes there’s no going back. JetBlue Airways says that there will be no second exits for famed flight attendant Steven Slater – who captured the nation’s imagination with his profanity-laced loudspeaker tirade and jump down a plane’s emergency chute, beer in hand. Spokeswoman Jenny Dervin said Saturday that Slater is no longer employed by the airline. She said the airline won’t release further details out of respect for Slater’s privacy. Slater’s lawyer had said he loved flying and wanted to return to work, and Slater’s folk-hero status among tens of thousands of online fans had led some of them to urge the airline to keep him on. The airline said at the time of the incident last month that Slater was suspended pending an investigation. It told employees in a memo that press coverage was not taking into account how much harm can be caused by emergency slides, which are deployed with a potentially deadly amount of force. The former flight attendant still has to navigate the criminal justice system. Given how sympathetic the wire service has been to his plight, and assuming he avoids jail, I have a perfect suggestion for who should be Slater’s next employer. He apparently won’t have to worry about whether he has a supportive environment. Cross-posted at BizzyBlog.com .

5 Subpar Directors Who Will Provoke Peter Jackson Into Making The Hobbit Himself

These days, it seems like everyone wants to direct The Hobbit except for Peter Jackson. After Guillermo del Toro left the project, it appeared that Jackson would be a natural fit to take the reins back to his Lord of the Rings franchise, but his reported reluctance has opened the door for unlikely contenders like David Dobkin ( Wedding Crashers ) and Brett Ratner ( X-Men: The Last Stand ). We’re on to this game that the suits from MGM and WB seem to be playing: flirt with completely inappropriate directors who aren’t right for the franchise in the hopes that they’ll bait Jackson into directing the film himself! Here are five more candidates for the job who ought to be leaked to the press immediately:

Solar Says His Relationship With Guru’s Family ‘Got Weird In The End’

‘Up until that point, there was no tension between myself and the family at all,’ he tells MTV News. By Shaheem Reid, with reporting by Sway Calloway Solar Photo: MTV News The obvious divide between Keith “Guru” Elam’s family and his friend and collaborator Solar is as large as the Grand Canyon. Relatives of the late Gang Starr MC — like his nephew Justin, who posted a YouTube video expressing his concerns about Solar after Guru was admitted to the hospital in February — say he purposely kept them in the dark about their loved one’s deteriorating condition . They have alleged that Solar tried to keep family and friends from seeing the MC, who lost his battle with cancer on Monday. “The funny thing is, it hasn’t been all this tension. It got weird in the end,” Solar told Sway earlier this week. “Up until the end, it didn’t exist, quite honestly. I talked to his father every Father’s Day; he came to this concert tribute in Boston. I visited his mother and father; they visited us. The tension really became evident in February. It became the public thing it is when Justin put the video out. It’s just an untrue video, and it opened the door for a lot of other things. Up until that point, there was no tension between myself and the family at all. I didn’t know [Justin’s mother and Guru’s sister] Trish at all. “I have nothing but the utmost respect for his family,” Solar added. “It’s unfortunate that the rift happened and Justin got caught into this divide in between.” In the wake of Guru’s death, a big point of contention was a foundation that Guru was quoted as announcing in his farewell letter released on Tuesday. “I have a nonprofit organization called Each One Counts dedicated to carrying on my charitable work on behalf of abused and disadvantaged children from around the world and also to educate and research a cure for this terrible disease that took my life,” the letter read. “I write this with tears in my eyes, not of sorrow but of joy for what a wonderful life I have enjoyed and how many great people I have had the pleasure of meeting.” Guru’s family members said they had never heard of any such organization in a statement they released to the public on Wednesday. “That’s an organization started by Guru, myself and my people,” Solar said. “Hopefully it’ll grow to be a huge worldwide charitable organization. “There a lot of things that Guru has done in his business and life that they don’t know,” he added. “He doesn’t report to them. He never reported to them. Guru’s a full-grown man. He didn’t report everything they did. They’re not his business mangers, and they didn’t have that type of relationship.” Solar also said Guru’s relatives are in full control of his funeral. “Yeah, I’m done with that,” he said. “That’s it. I’m done. Totally out of it. That’s between them and his family.” Share your memories of Guru and Gang Starr in the comments below. I was like, ‘I have been in Los Angeles for three years and I don’t think any guy has actually opened the door for me’. I was like, ‘Wow, that is super impressive’. Excellent’.” From their first meeting, Hemsworth scored himself a girlfriend and a job co-starring in The Last Song. Not bad! Related Links: Last Song Lovebirds

Miley Cyrus Discusses Her Chemistry With Liam Hemsworth On ‘Ellen’

‘We’ve been together for 10 months now and I’m really happy,’ singer says about her beau and ‘Last Song’ co-star. By Jocelyn Vena Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus Photo: Stefanie Keenan/Getty Images for Chopard Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth didn’t share their onscreen/offscreen chemistry from the get-go. Cyrus says that when the couple first started shooting their movie “The Last Song” last summer, she wasn’t sure how Hemsworth felt about her. In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres set to air on “Ellen” next Wednesday, Cyrus, who also appeared on “American Idol” this week, explains that when she first met Hemsworth, she had no intention of dating him, or anyone else for that matter. “I was actually going through a tough time. I was like, guys just need to be out of my life for a little while,” she explained. “[I thought] ‘I just need to alone.’ “I kind of just wanted to focus on my work. I tend to hide behind my work sometimes,” she says of how she felt at the time. But there was something about Hemsworth that made her change her mind. “But I met him, and he opened the door for me, and I was like, I have been in L.A. for three years and I don’t think any guy has actually opened the door for me,” she added. “It wasn’t that he wanted the job. That’s just who he is. I was like, ‘Wow, that is super-impressive.’ I actually turned to the director and said, ‘He’s got the job.’ He’s hot and he opened the door. Excellent.” The attraction was there for Cyrus, but she wasn’t sure they could make it work. “We started filming and at one point the chemistry was kind of awkward. … I liked him a little bit, he liked me a little bit, but it was awkward,” she said. “Then I was like, ‘OK, just fake it.’ [I said] ‘Please just pretend you like me’ and he was like ‘I don’t have to pretend. I really do like you.’ [Then it was like] ‘OK, you’re going to be my boyfriend. Cool.’ ” So, how good are things for the pair now? Apparently pretty great. “We’ve been together for 10 months now and I’m really happy,” she said. “I like him more now than I did [before] because we know more about each other.” “The Last Song” is due in theaters Wednesday, March 31. Juvenile Arrested In New Orleans

Rapper arrested on charge of misdemeanor marijuana possession. By Shaheem Reid Juvenile Photo: MTV News Juvenile ‘s time in the studio was interrupted by a trip to jail on Thursday. The New Orleans rapper was in a house that he uses as a recording studio in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, when police stopped by to investigate an anonymous tip that the smell of marijuana smoke was coming from the house. Police say that when they arrived, they could smell the smoke from as far as 10 feet away. When Juvenile’s producer Leroy Edwards, 42, opened the door, the authorities say they were greeted with a cloud. Officers searched Edwards, found marijuana on his person and he was handcuffed immediately. Police detained the other people in the house, including Juvenile, for about two hours while they obtained a search warrant. Once the warrant was executed, officers found a bag containing half an ounce to one ounce of marijuana in the kitchen area. According to the authorities Juvenile, who was eating at the time of the police’s visit, acknowledged that the bag was his personal property. He was arrested after signing a statement. Juvenile (born Terius Gray) does not live in the house. St. Bernard Parish is southeast of New Orleans, and the house where Juvenile was arrested is located in the residential neighborhood of Arabi. Juvenile, who was arrested for marijuana possession in 2008 , and Edwards were taken to jail and booked on charges of misdemeanor possession of marijuana at around 6 p.m. Both were released on bond a little before midnight. The case is scheduled to be handed over to the district attorney’s office for prosecution. Juvenile could not be reached for comment at press time. Related Artists Juvenile
