‘Star Trek’ Villain Forces Kirk To Grow, Chris Pine Says

Benedict Cumberbatch’s character ‘not just a blood-dripping-from-the-fangs bad guy,’ Pine explains to MTV News. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Chris Pine Photo: When J.J. Abrams got the opportunity to helm one of the most beloved franchises of all time, he took “Star Trek” literally where no man has gone before. The alternate timeline of his reboot laid down the law that this ” Star Trek ” can and will go anywhere its creators want. When MTV News spoke to the captain of the Starship Enterprise, Chris Pine , his carefully measured words praised the work from Abrams and his screenwriters — Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof — on the upcoming sequel. “There is so much happening in their script. I can’t say much of anything,” Pine told MTV News while promoting his next film, Friday’s “People Like Us.” “They come from TV land, all of them: J.J., Bob, Alex and Damon. They’ve worked together in the highest-pressure situation in television for years. That machine is well-oiled.” The creative team’s background in television is what Pine said allows them to change things on the fly and continually improve the film. “What you also get in that circumstance is it’s a constantly evolving beast — the script, the material, how it’s going to look, how J.J.’s going to shoot it,” he said. “There is nothing set in stone, which is tremendously frightening, but also extremely exhilarating, especially when it’s like a finely tuned racecar. They just know how to do it. In this constantly evolution, the script that they had written kept getting better and better.” For anyone familiar with the crew’s previous work, which includes “Lost” and most recently “Prometheus,” it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Pine complimented the mythical qualities of the screenplay. “What they’re so good at is this kind of mythic reinvention. They’re really good at writing myth, and these characters — I think what people will find with everybody — is that these characters go on mythic arcs,” Pine said. “It’s all about growing up. These are young men and young women, and they are not the crew that we know from the series. They’re developing into that. It’s a long way to go there.” Even with mystery surrounding the entire production, fans are most desperate for answers when it comes to just one aspect of the sequel: Benedict Cumberbatch joined the film as a villain, whose identity has yet to be revealed. Pine complimented the actor, but couldn’t say much more than that the villain will bring out new qualities in Kirk. “It is structured so that the antagonist brings out all of the qualities in Kirk that need to happen in order for Kirk to grow,” Pine said. “As you know from Benedict, just watching him, vocally, he’s fascinating. He’s got this deep resonate voice. He’s a fascinating face. He’s a lovely guy and just super smart. You want to see something firing in his brain, so he’s not just a blood-dripping-from-the-fangs bad guy. Benedict brings those kinds of smarts.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Star Trek 2.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Courtney Robertson to Pen Tell-All Bachelor Book?!

The Bachelor and The Bachelorette spoilers seem to always leak, but the cast members are always on legal lockdown before, during and after the show. This fact makes it hard to believe recent reports that this year’s Bachelor winner, Courtney Robertson, is planning a tell-all book about the experience. According to In Touch, Ben Flajnik’s fiancee wants to “address misconceptions” about her name-calling, top-dropping, man-eating, “winning” ways. No other Bachelor or Bachelorette cast member has ever gone off the script by airing juicy behind-the-scenes details … most likely because of iron-clad NDAs. Just the same, “Courtney has a lot already written,” according to an unnamed source quoted by Wetpaint. “She started when she got home from filming the show.” “It was her way of coping with frustrations over how she was portrayed. Writing was her release … We all think she should definitely turn it into a book . It will be SO juicy.” One way to get around the legal obstacles? “Fictionalizing” it. “She could do it as a memoir – or as a fictional story loosely based on her life. It’s still in the early stages,” says the source of a possible Courtney novel. Hey, it worked for New York Times bestseller Lauren Conrad. In related news … check out these Courtney Robertson bikini photos ! You can definitely see what Ben saw in her, if you know what we’re talking about. [Photo: Fame/Flynet]

Mary Cheney and Heather Poe: Married!

Mary Cheney, the openly gay daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, married her longtime partner Heather Poe earlier today. Cheney spokeswoman Kara Ahern confirmed the nuptials. “Our daughter Mary and her long time partner, Heather Poe, were married today in Washington, DC,” the Cheneys said in a statement. Mary (left) and Heather “have been in a committed relationship for many years, and we are all delighted that they were able to take advantage of the opportunity to have that relationship recognized,” Dick and his wife Lynne added. “Mary and Heather and their children are very important and much loved members of our family and we wish them every happiness.” As V.P., Dick Cheney regularly broke ranks with the Republican party and president George W. Bush with his support of same-sex marriage. Poe and Mary Cheney have two children: Cheney gave birth to their son in 2007, and their daughter in 2009. They live together in Virginia. Question Of The Day: Is The Man Who Killed The Child Molester Who Harmed His Child A Criminal?

Is The Man Who Killed The Child Molester Who Harmed His Child A Criminal In Shiner, Texas, there’s little doubt among residents that a 23-year-old man who reportedly killed a man he found molesting his 5-year-old daughter in a horse barn should be hailed as a hero, not denounced as a criminal. Yet some legal experts question why the father hasn’t yet been arrested and charged with murder, saying vigilante justice, no matter how the circumstances come about, can’t be tolerated in a civil society. A Texas grand jury will have to deal with those questions next week as it takes a deeper look at the circumstances of the killing, and whether the father was justified in hitting the man so hard with his fists that he died. In most jurisdictions, according to “Criminal Law,” a widely used textbook, the use of fists in defense if there are no other weapons present is automatically an example of reasonable force. But in this case, were emotions an extenuating circumstance that caused the angry dad to go too far? More broadly, when is a person in a defensive fight required to stop? “Assuming it’s true that this guy was molesting the daughter … he would then have the right to defend her and hit him enough to have him stop,” James Harrington, director of the Texas Civil Rights Project, told Foxnews.com. “But you cannot summarily execute him, even though I can understand the anger he would have.” He added: “The question is: When does it move beyond self-defense?” The killing happened last Saturday, according to Lacava County Sheriff Micah Harmon, after the man’s daughter had gone to a barn to feed the family’s chickens, and then began screaming. When the father ran to investigate, he found a man described as a family acquaintance, a horse groomer, sexually abusing the girl. Police have not released any names, in part to protect the girl’s identity, and, in the case of the man who was killed, because they have not yet located his relatives in Mexico. According to the county coroner, the man died of blunt force trauma to the head and neck. Eyewitnesses arrived to see the alleged molester already on the ground, not moving. The girl was taken to a hospital, where she was treated and released for minor injuries. While police continue to investigate, they have so far found no reason to disbelieve the man’s story. The dad “had remorse,” says Sheriff Harmon. “It wasn’t his intent [to kill anybody]. He was protecting his daughter and doing what he thought he had to do to protect his daughter.” Discuss… Source

A “Lil Positivity”: Homeless Man Finds $77,000 In Texas Park And Is Allowed To Keep It

Wow! After months of investigations, the City Council of Bastrop, Texas, has decided to let a homeless man named Timothy Yost keep the $77,000 worth of cash and collectible gold coins that he found by the Colorado River earlier this year, Fox 7 News reports. “It means everything to him. He has a whole future ahead of him. He has the opportunity to make plans and have a real future,” Aleta Peacock, Yost’s attorney said after the City Council’s announcement. Yost was washing his feet in the river this January when he spotted the bag full of $100 bills and Kruggerand coins (gold collector coins from South Africa worth more than $1000 each) in a Bastrop park. The homeless man had brought the cash — which was wet — to a bank to trade them in for dry bills. But the bank teller, thinking that a crime might have been committed, called 911. The loot was quickly seized and a lengthy investigation began. According to KVUE.com, Yost has been fighting to reclaim his find from the city ever since. This week, after a long period of uncertainty, Yost will finally be reunited with the money. Bastrop police, with the help of the FBI, have determined that the bag is not linked to a crime and the rightful owner has not been found. Reminiscing over the challenges he’s faced as a homeless man, including having to eat out of a garbage can, Yost told Fox 7 News that he is keen to start a new chapter in his life — complete, of course, with a few new purchases. “I’ve been walking for so long, the first thing I want is a vehicle,” he said. This is such an inspiring story!

Ali Fedotowsky "Freaking Out" at Idea of Roberto Martinez as The Bachelor

Ali Fedotowsky, who chose Roberto Martinez on The Bachelorette two summers ago, is said to be less than thrilled about rumors that say he’s in talks to be The Bachelor . Roberto and Ali split after 18 months together, and sure enough, he’s being talked about as the star of Season 17 of The Bachelor , slated for early January. “Roberto never shared his side of the breakup, and Ali is terrified about what he would say on the show and how she would come off,” a source explains. Who knows why she would care about a breakup that wasn’t even that bad (supposedly), now that she’s faded from the spotlight (mostly), but whatever. Luckily for Ali, he may turn down the opportunity. “He’s very happy being out of the spotlight,” a source close to the hunky former minor league ballplayer and current San Diego insurance agent explains. “He hasn’t ruled it out 100 percent, but don’t bet on it.” If Roberto Martinez were to become The Bachelor, he would be the first minority star in 25 seasons (including eight Bachelorettes ) of the ABC franchise. None of the 16 Bachelors are married to their final rose recipient, although Jason Mesnick married Molly Malaney, his runner-up from that season. For scoop on the current season, follow this link for The Bachelorette spoilers and hints on how Emily Maynard’s final three shake out … allegedly.

Ashley Tisdale’s Hot Pink Cleavage

It’s not often that Ashley Tisdale gets invited to an event, or anything for that matter, but she did this time and she didn’t waste the opportunity. Here she is showing off some secret cleavage in her hot pink dress. Didn’t Britney Spears wear this exact same dress to one of her X Factor promos? Well this is just embarrassing. Luckily I don’t give a crap about anything like that, I’m just in it for the cleavage and this dress has a nicely place mesh section that works out perfectly for a guy like me. Enjoy.

Big K.R.I.T. Makes ‘Important’ Music With B.B. King

‘He heard the record, he loved it and he also played the guitar on it,’ K.R.I.T. tells ‘RapFix Live’ about ‘Praying Man.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Sway Calloway, Big K.R.I.T. and Ed Lover on “RapFix Live” Photo: MTV News Big K.R.I.T. may be a new artist, but the standout Mississippi MC has an old musical soul. On Tuesday, K.R.I.T. released his debut album, Live From the Underground, and while he features quite a few artists on his LP, the one that stands out the most is blues legend B.B. King . “I think doing a record with B.B. King allowed me the opportunity to blend two different generations across the board and make a song that I hope is extremely impactful,” the King Remembered in Time told MTV News correspondent Sway, Ed Lover and Doctor Dre when he appeared on “RapFix Live” on Wednesday. The record is “Praying Man,” a poignant story-driven rap on which K.R.I.T. rhymes from the perspective of three slaves who are facing death. During the first verse he rhymes as a slave hanging from a tree in a noose and in the second he tells the story of a slave jumps off his captive ship into the Atlantic Ocean. On the final verse, K.R.I.T. spits about a man running from a lynch mob. It’s all pretty deep and a far cry from most of today’s rap fare. “All three of these people are dead, but they’re rappin’ to you as if they didn’t know and the praying man that they’re talking about is death coming to take them from their situation,” the producer/MC explained of the track’s concept. “When I was working on the record I was like, ‘Yo, this would be crazy if I got B.B. King on the song.’ ” Krizzle’s wishful thinking eventually turned into a reality. “I was actually able to make it happen. He heard the record, he loved it and he also played the guitar on it. He gave it his own feel as well,” K.R.I.T. said before he confirmed that he will also shoot a video for the song. “I’m excited for people to hear it and when we do shoot a visual, because I know we got to, it gotta be cinematic.” Coming from the South, K.R.I.T., who built his buzz by releasing a trilogy of free mixtapes , felt it was his duty to tell these types of stories on his album after hearing stories about the civil rights movement from his grandmother. “It’s important that I talk about all that. It’s a lot of people that died for me to have the opportunity that I have now, just the freedom,” he said. “It shouldn’t be forgotten as far as the past is concerned.” What is your favorite song off Big K.R.I.T.’s Live From the Underground ?
