One such politician who falls under the scanner of dubiousness is the Chairman of the Workers Party (WP), Ms Sylvia Lim. There is growing evidence to conclusively show that Ms Lim is helping to promote the interests of the PAP, rather than that of the opposition or what the WP likes to call “the alternative”. In an authoritarian political system like in Singapore where a single political party wields absolute power for more than half a century, there is inevitably a sense of apprehension and su

Malaysian police clash with protesters over water privitization

Thousands of protesters clashed with Malaysian police to call for an end to privatization of water utilities in the country. And close to 60 people were arrested for defying a police ban and attempting to march on the streets. Earlier, opposition legislators gathered near the National Mosque to address the crowd about issues concerning privatization in Selangor, a state which surrounds the capital Kuala Lumpur. The Malaysian government has embarked on progressive privatization of water following concerns of water scarcity in the country. Currently urban Malaysians use 500 liters of water per day. The government says this could increase to 700 liters per day due to rapid urbanization in the country. Selangor is the richest state in the country and ruled by the opposition alliance led by opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim. In 2005, the federal government privatized water management in Selangor to Syabas but the opposition said it has only incurred losses and may need to be bailed out. Selangor wants to take back water management but this effort is being blocked by the government and Syabas. Research done has projected that by 2050, 65 countries would be hit by water supply problems with a total of seven billion people affected. The debate about water privatization has been intensifying in Malaysia. However human rights workers say that there are many other avenues of ensuring adequate water supply in the country without burdening the poor as privatization would lead to a hike in tariffs. But they also say that this needs policy changes from the government. Video at the link. added by: JanforGore

Chavez Loses Supermajority in Venezuelan Parliamentary Elections, Opposition Gains 52% of Popular Vote

Results from the voting centers finally came out early in the morning of September 27 starting at around 2:00 am after the parliamentary elections on Sunday went deep into the night. The results that have been announced by National Election Center (CNE) revealed that Chavez's PSUV has suffered a reversal to the opposition and lost the two-thirds supermajority that allowed his party to pass legislation without opposition. The Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela (PSUV) or United Socialist Party of Venezuela and its allies controlled a total of 139 of 167 seats in the National Assembly before the elections. The current election results now show that the opposition controls a total of 62 seats to the 94 by the PSUV, a huge pickup of seats for Chavez' opponents. The loss of the super majority now means that the opposition in Venezuela will effectively be able to oppose Chavez' agenda, which up until now, had been essentially unopposed. The opposition also won the popular vote with 52% of the vote. However, gerrymandering on the part of Chavez' government has given more power to rural areas while dividing the opposition into different regions, preventing them from gaining an overall victory in delegates. _____________________________________________________________________________ What does this mean for Chavez' Bolivarian Revolution? Bozell Discusses Media’s Persistent Attack on Tea Party Candidates with FBN’s Stuart Varney

“This is what we are to expect, and it’s going to get worse between now and November.” That’s how NewsBusters publisher and Media Research Center President Brent Bozell reacted this morning on Fox Business Network’s “Varney & Company” to the media’s drumbeat of criticism regarding Tea Party-backed Republican nominees for office this November. Bozell agreed with host Stuart Varney that the media are incessantly bashing Tea Party favorites like Delaware’s Christine O’Donnell because they have to change the subject from the demonstrable failures of Obamanomics [MP3 audio available here ; WMV video for download here ]: The other side can’t defend itself. They can’t defend their agenda. They haven’t been able to defend their principles for years, because their ideas have been tested, they’ve all failed. The Great Society has all failed. They can’t defend this lurch into socialism. And now the numbers are coming back and the numbers are horrific. So they can do one of two things: acknowledge that they’re wrong or demonize the opposition to the extent that the opposition will be seen less favorably than they [are].

NYT Calls New Yorkers ‘Appalling’ for Opposing Ground Zero Mosque

The New York Times Friday called many of its readers “appalling” for their opposition to the Ground Zero mosque. As NewsBusters reported moments ago, the Times released a new poll Friday finding that 67 percent of New York City residents are against the proposed location for the Islamic center. At the same time, the Gray Lady, clearly not concerned about offending its dwindling number of patrons, chose to insult portions of its remaining readership with the following editorial : It has always been a myth that New York City, in all its dizzying globalness, is a utopia of humanistic harmony. The city has a bloody history of ethnic and class strife. The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are two pinnacles of American openness to the outsider. New Yorkers like to think they are a perfect fit with their city. Tolerance, however, isn’t the same as understanding, so it is appalling to see New Yorkers who could lead us all away from mosque madness, who should know better, playing to people’s worst instincts. That includes Carl Paladino and Rick Lazio, Republicans running for governor who have disgraced their state with histrionics about the mosque being a terrorist triumph. And Rudolph Giuliani, who cloaks his opposition to the mosque as “sensitivity” to 9/11 families without acknowledging that this conflates all prayerful Muslims with terrorists, a despicable conclusion. New Yorkers, like other Americans, have a way to go. That’s a heckuva way to treat your patrons as well as prospective customers. Is it any wonder this company’s stock is trading close to a 26-year low?

Chris Matthews’ ‘Nightmare’: ‘Right-wing Boys and Girls Singing Praise for Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin’

The hatred for Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, and Americans that don’t agree with the current direction of this nation was dripping from Chris Matthews’ lips Friday evening. In a show filled with falsehoods and anti-Conservative rants that should even embarrass folks at MSNBC, the “Hardball” host concluded by once again attacking one of the most popular radio and television personalities in the country along with the former governor of Alaska. Of the “Restoring Honor” rally to be held in Washington, D.C., Saturday, Matthews asked, “Can we imagine if [Martin Luther] King were physically here tomorrow, today, were he to reappear tomorrow on the very steps of the Lincoln Memorial?” The MSNBCer disgustingly answered his own question, “I have a nightmare that one day a right-wing talk show host will come to this spot, his people`s lips dripping with the words ‘interposition’ and ‘nullification.'” Matthews continued practically seething venom, “Little right-wing boys and little right-wing girls joining hands and singing their praise for Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin. I have a nightmare” (video follows with transcript and commentary): CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: Let me finish tonight with those few lines from the Martin Luther King speech of 1963. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., CIVIL RIGHTS ICON: But not only that, let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia! Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee! (END VIDEO CLIP) MATTHEWS: Dr. King was talking about the founding place of the KKK, Stone Mountain. The site of the Scottsboro Boys trial — Lookout Mountain. This was 1963, never forget. The civil rights bill was a year away. Lunch counters and gas station restrooms were still for whites only, so were hotels and restaurants throughout the South. I remember myself seeing those white-only signs along the highway heading south during a spring break. I remember seeing one still there when I went to rural Louisiana to train for the Peace Corps. There was a hard divide in this country back then. On one side stood the people who believed in the power of the federal government to do the right thing, especially when state governments, local governments and local businesses persisted in doing the wrong thing or doing nothing. It was the time when governors like Ross Barnett of Mississippi and George Wallace of Alabama stood up to keep their universities white only. A time when people used terms like “nullification” and “interposition,” who claimed the right to obstruct the federal government, to act even when Congress passed a law. Today, we hear the echoes of those voices, people calling for nullification. Even secession gets a call from those who just don`t like the federal government and certainly don`t like the man leading it. Tomorrow, those who thrill to such words are heading here to Washington. They`re heading directly to the Lincoln Memorial, site of the Martin Luther King speech. The main speaker is the man who said this about this country`s first African-American president. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) GLENN BECK, FOX NEWS HOST: This guy is, I believe, a racist. Look at the way — look at — look at the things that he has been surrounded by. (END VIDEO CLIP) MATTHEWS: That is the man who comes to Lincoln`s feet to claim the mantle of Martin Luther King. Can we imagine if King were physically here tomorrow, today, were he to reappear tomorrow on the very steps of the Lincoln Memorial? I have a nightmare that one day a right wing talk show host will come to this spot, his people`s lips dripping with the words “interposition” and “nullification.” Little right wing boys and little right wing girls joining hands and singing their praise for Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin. I have a nightmare. Many talked today about a religious center near Ground Zero being a desecration. What do you call this? Actually, the real desecration is what Matthews and his co-conspirators at MSNBC are doing to journalism. Offering opinions about political figures and competitors on rival networks is one thing, but this constant invective aimed at Republicans and Fox News personalities coming from Matthews and virtually all the on air talent at MSNBC is getting totally out of control. What Matthews did Friday evening isn’t much different than what NewsBusters reported is now regularly being spewed by liberal radio talk show hosts. Does MSNBC really want its programming to be at the same level as the hatred being uttered by the likes of Mike Malloy, Stephanie Miller, Randi Rhodes, Ron Reagan, Jr., and Montel Williams? As Ed Schultz is now a part of MSNBC’s prime time lineup, and is a regular emitter of some of the most vile rhetoric on the radio today, maybe the answer is “Yes.” Journalism be damned, I guess.

Columnist Mark Shields Despairs George W. Bush Too Honorable to Use as Bogeyman

It will be “very difficult for Democrats to demonize” George W. Bush “again” during this campaign season, liberal nationally syndicated columnist Mark Shields despaired on Friday’s Inside Washington, because he’s “a circumspect and discreet former President.” Quite unlike, he didn’t say, the often boorish Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter. Reacting to Vice President Joe Biden’s indictment of the supposed disastrous results from the Bush administration’s economic policies, Shields fretted: The problem for the Democrats is this, that the energizer bunny for the 2006, 2008 campaigns has disappeared because of George W. Bush’s being a circumspect and discreet former President it makes it very difficult for Democrats to demonize him again. He’s become a non-person. He shows up at a ball game once in a while, he greets soldiers coming back. He hasn’t said anything controversial and that makes it a tougher fight for Joe Biden to make. Charles Krauthammer is a regular on the weekly program, so I’ll use that as a hook to highlight his latest column, “ The last refuge of a liberal ,” which includes this well-framed observation: Promiscuous charges of bigotry are precisely how our current rulers and their vast media auxiliary react to an obstreperous citizenry that insists on incorrect thinking. Krauthammer elaborated: — Resistance to the vast expansion of government power, intrusiveness and debt, as represented by the Tea Party movement? Why, racist resentment toward a black president. — Disgust and alarm with the federal government’s unwillingness to curb illegal immigration, as crystallized in the Arizona law? Nativism. — Opposition to the most radical redefinition of marriage in human history, as expressed in Proposition 8 in California? Homophobia. — Opposition to a 15-story Islamic center and mosque near Ground Zero? Islamophobia. Another great formulation, about how those tricky Tea Party activists weren’t clever enough to fool the liberal media: When the Tea Party arose, a spontaneous, leaderless and perfectly natural (and traditionally American) reaction to the vast expansion of government intrinsic to the president’s proudly proclaimed transformational agenda, the liberal commentariat cast it as a mob of angry white yahoos disguising their antipathy to a black president by cleverly speaking in economic terms.   ( Inside Washington is a weekly show produced by ABC’s Washington, DC affiliate, which airs it Sunday morning after it runs Friday night on DC’s PBS affiliate, WETA-TV channel 26, and Saturday on local cable’s TBD TV .)
