10 Famous Women Who Were Victims of Rape

Ask any woman you know which type of crime they fear most would be committed against them, and the answer will always be rape. Rape, after all, is one of the most, if not the most painful crime a human being can ever commit against another human being. It is not just a one-time crime that ends the moment the act is over. The actual act is only the beginning, with the victim later suffering years, if not a lifetime, of self-loathing, trauma, and in some cases, scorn from other people. And it greatly affects the lives not only of the victim, but of their families and loved ones as well. History has proven that just about anyone can be a rapist. The news is often replete with stories of fathers raping their daughters, friendly neighbors brutally attacking the girl next door, etc. In the same vein, anyone can also become a victim. These famous women are a testament to that. 1. Billie Holiday One of the most influential jazz artists of all time, Billie Holiday was molested at the age of 10. A few years later, she was raped by a neighbor named Wilbert Rich, who was caught in the act by the singer’s mother. The rapist was thrown in jail, but only spent three months there. 2. Fiona Apple When she was 12, Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Apple was raped just outside her family’s house. Her traumatic experience was subtly referenced in the song “Sullen Girl”. 3. Fran Drescher The star of the defunct sitcom “The Nanny” was brutally raped in 1985 by two armed robbers that broke into the apartment she was sharing with her husband, Peter Marc Jacobson, who was beaten up and made to witness the entire ordeal. It took her many years to recover from the rape. 4. Oprah Winfrey Oprah may be the one of the world’s richest and most powerful women today, but her childhood was, for lack of a better word, pure hell. On top of the poverty she was born into, she was also raped at the age of nine. 5. Kelly McGillis In 1982, the star of “Top Gun” and a female friend, who she later admitted to have been her lesbian lover at the time, suffered a brutal sexual assault. Two young men broke into McGillis’ New York apartment, tied the two women up and threatened to beat them to death, and raped them both at knifepoint. This ordeal served as her motivation when she played the prosecutor who sent the rapists of Jodie Foster’s character to jail in “The Accused”. 6. Gabrielle Union When she was 19, “Bring It On” actress Gabrielle Union was beaten and raped at gunpoint while working a part time job at a shoe store. The brutal rape and beating took place in 1992, years before Hollywood beckoned. 7. Connie Francis Singer Connie Francis was attacked right at the motel where she was staying while performing at a music festival in New York in 1974. Her room at the Howard Johnson’s Lodge was broken into by a still unidentified assailant, a fact which was instrumental to her winning a multimillion dollar judgment in the case she subsequently filed against the motel chain for failing to provide adequate security. She was so traumatized by the rape that she did not perform again for seven years. 8. Teri Hatcher “Desperate Housewives” star Teri Hatcher confessed to Vanity Fair in March 2006 that she was a victim of sexual abuse by Richard Hayes Stone, an uncle by marriage. Her ordeal started at the age of five, and went on for several years. She never spoke publicly of the rape until she learned that a recent victim of Stone’s committed suicide at the age of 14. Hatcher assisted prosecutors with their indictment of Stone, who later pleaded guilty and was eventually sentenced to 14 years in jail. She is now actively involved in encouraging other rape victims to come forward and stop blaming themselves. 9. Maya Angelou Celebrated autobiographer and poet Maya Angelou was eight when her mother’s boyfriend raped her. Unlike many rape victims, she readily told the rest of her family about her ordeal. Although the rapist, a Mr. Freeman, was eventually found guilty, his stay in prison lasted all of a single day. But justice outside the justice system was swift. Four days after he was released from prison, Freeman was found dead, apparently kicked to death by the poet’s uncles. 10. Tori Amos Singer Tori Amos was raped at knifepoint by a male fan who asked her for a ride after a performance. Her suffering lasted for hours, with her attacker constantly telling her that he would bring her to his friends and cut her up. Amos says, “I survived that torture, which left me urinating all over myself and left me paralyzed for years.”. Her ordeal served as the inspiration behind her song “Me and A Gun, while the very powerful song “Silent All These Years” has become associated with the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN ), a toll-free help line in the US for abuse victims that Amos cofounded in 1994. Bride of Chucky Forced Oprah to Eat 30 Pounds of Mac and Cheese

Last week, Oprah Winfrey was criticized for spending 18 minutes preaching about the power of hopes and dreams . To prove that she is not just a motivational speaker sent from God (as she herself insinuated within that lengthy sermon), Oprah sat down with Piers Morgan for his first CNN show determined to prove that she is indeed human. Exhibit A: Back in 1998, Oprah succumbed to Bride of Chucky -related depression and binge-ate 30 pounds worth of macaroni and cheese.

Cory Booker: Can The Nation’s Most Energetic, Twitter-prolific Mayor Resuscitate New Jersey’s Largest City?

For press events, President Obama has the Rose Garden. Cory Booker has the Oprah machine — and Twitter. On a good day, Booker wins. Though mayor of a rather troubled city, Booker is as talented as Obama at cranking national headlines. Both he and the President are old hands at fielding questions from the national press corps. Both huddle with CEOs. Both have been called leaders of the “Oprah Winfrey wing of the Democratic Party.” But only Booker, the young and indefatigable mayor of Newark, New Jersey, has wielded a shovel to dig constituents out after a snowstorm, tackled a fleeing crime suspect as though he were on an opposing Super Bowl team, or appeared beside Oprah to break news about the charitable whims of a 26-year-old billionaire. And only Booker has been known to pump 15 Tweets per hour for a million followers of his 140-character messages, some of which include Bruce Springsteen lyrics, showing a keen aptitude for attracting fans of the Boss. In fact, Booker succeeds where every past Newark mayor failed. “You could say that he had very tiny shoes to fill,” said James Hughes, dean of the Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University. Booker’s predecessors acted more like candidates for prison than for higher office. Five of Newark’s last seven mayors have been indicted on criminal charges, including the last three — Hugh Addonizio, Kenneth Gibson and Sharpe James. “Booker,” Hughes added, “is one of Newark’s greatest resources.” But as talented, and telegenic, as Booker is, the fate of Newark is iffy. The Great Recession has rocked Newark. Poverty rules in its wards, along with piles of rubble and drug-infestation, and the city, now 54% black, is still licking wounds inflicted a generation ago during the race riots of 1967, which persuaded middle class residents to head for the hills. Combating crime was Booker’s first priority, and the city has made significant progress. Booker named a second-generation New York City cop, Garry McCarthy, as Newark police director, a move for which Booker took heat. (Long-time resident Amiri Baraka was so incensed by the appointment of a white police director in a predominantly black city that he reportedly gave the Mayor a book titled “How to Recover from the Addiction to White Supremacy.”) Read More At AtlantaPost.com

Howard Stern, Condoleezza Rice and George Clooney Highlight Piers Morgan’s First Week on Tonight

Perhaps when Piers Morgan insinuated that all other media will fail , he meant that he’d single-handedly put them out of business. In addition to Oprah Winfrey, Morgan has compiled a hoarders-like line-up of first week guests: Radio star Howard Stern, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Ricky Gervais and George Clooney. Not bad, Piers. No Simon Cowell, but hey — Stern! Just watch out for Captain Janks . [ The Wrap ]

50 Most Popular Women on the Web: Full list topped by Lady Gaga – Online Social Media

50 Most Popular Women on the Web: Full list topped by Lady Gaga – Online Social Media We thought some of our readers here at OSM would be interested in a list compiled from Google statistics called the ’50 Most Popular Women on the Web,’ which was produced by COED magazine. It’s fascinating reading seeing which female gets the most online attention and many of you may not be surprised to know that it was Lady Gaga who took the top spot. However, some of you will definitely be surprised at the inclusion of teen heartthrob singer, Justin Bieber , who hits the list at No. 7. Yup, I did say Justin Bieber and most of you will have realized that he is in fact male. You can see the full list with this information in an article by Tierney Bricker over on Zap2It . Quite how Bieber made the list is anyone’s guess, unless of course some people think he is actually a girl, or maybe it’s just somebody’s idea of a joke. Apart from Lady Gaga at the top the next four spots were taken by Ke$ ha, Madonna, Beyonce and Rihanna . Other prominent females on the web such as Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift and Oprah Winfrey were all ranked on the list but all below Justin Bieber! Robert Dougherty over on Associated Content has also reported on this Top 50 list and tells us that Lady Gaga had 229 million page mentions according to Google. Although this list came out 2 months ago it has only just struck prominence and we wonder why more mention about Justin Bieber being on it wasn’t made at the time. What are your thoughts on the list and especially Lady Gaga taking the top spot, and of course the appearance of Justin Bieber? We’d welcome your comments on this so why not send them in. Carson Kressley on Working with Oprah, Stardom and Shows Like What Not to Wear: ‘It’s Terribly Un-Positive.’

Carson Kressley has been a television fixture for close to a decade, moving from Bravo’s Queer Eye for the Straight Guy to Oscar red carpets to Lifetime’s How to Look Good Naked in an effortless evolution. Though he co-hosted the second season of ABC’ s True Beauty last year, his talents seem especially accustomed to his newest role, that of co-judge (alongside Nancy O’D ell) on the Oprah Winfrey Network’s Your OWN Show: Oprah’s Search for the Next TV Star . We caught up with Kressley at yesterday’s TCA panels in Pasadena to discuss Oprah, starmaking, and why shows like What Not to Wear and our quasi-beloved The A-List: New York could be hazardous.
