Katharine Carr on Oprah: She’s a Liar!

It’s hard to know what to make of Kitty Kelley and her new, unauthorized biography of Oprah Winfrey. On one hand, the author relies on anonymous sources and tired gossip material to write about the talk show host’s sexuality and friendship with Gayle King. However, she also broke the (confirmed-as-true) news that Oprah once lived with John Tesh. Kelley has penned books on famous subjects such as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Frank Sinatra and Nancy Reagan – and never been successfully sued for libel or forced to retract a written statement. The author may make her living in a morally grey area, but she’s never been outed as a liar. Therefore, Oprah fans might be disturbed by the content of Kelley’s latest book. Especially the chapter that quotes Winfrey’s cousin, Katharine Carr. Simply put, Carr paints Oprah as someone who is an enemy of the truth… “Where Oprah got that nonsense about growing up in filth and roaches, I have no idea. [Oprah’s grandmother] kept a spotless house… It was a wooden, six-room house with a large living room that had a fireplace and rocking chair,” Carr says, adding: “I’ve confronted her and asked ‘Why do you tell such lies?’ Oprah told me, ‘That’s what people want to hear. The truth is boring.'” Carr also says she loves her cousin and forgives her because Oprah has done so much for other people. But she closes with a major zinger: “Oprah does not love her mother at all… She gives her a great deal financially, but she does not give her the respect and affection a daughter should, and that bothers me.” Are these words of a bitter relative? Or the exposure of television’s most beloved icon as someone that’s built a reputation on lies and half-truths? You decide.

Mary J. Blige Tells Oprah ‘If You Save Women, You Save The World’

R&B superstar goes on ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ to discuss her Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by Shaheem Reid Mary J. Blige on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” Photo: Harpo Kicking off her appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” on Tuesday (April 13), Mary J. Blige sang her cover of the classic Led Zeppelin tune “Stairway to Heaven.” But the real reason behind her visit was to talk about her struggles growing up in New York and how she hopes to empower young women. “I could have been dead because of this environment,” she said about her childhood in Yonkers. “But because of this environment, I’m alive too. I remember one day being there. I was sitting there, and it was a cloudy day. I started praying. I was really depressed that day, and I was crying, and I was like, ‘Father, if there’s a way out, please show me.’ As I was asking him that day, the sky … opened up and the sun came down. And I knew at that moment I was going to get out.” As a superstar musician, Blige started the Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now, which allows young women to seek the support and education she craved as a child. “It’s a dream come true,” she told Oprah. “My thing is, if you save women, you save the world. This is probably one of the most important places, because when women are looking for jobs, a lot of time they don’t have babysitters. That’s another thing that holds them back.” Blige said she’s committed to making sure women can get the help they need through her foundation. “From mothers to daughters to aunts, black, white, it doesn’t matter who you are: If you need help, the Mary J. Blige Center for Women is here,” she said. “It’s starting small, but we’re going to get bigger. When you’re educated, you’re confident. You know what you’re speaking about. You know who you are.” When Blige was a kid, she said, getting an education wasn’t the hip thing to do, so she didn’t think she could seek that out. “When I was growing up, it wasn’t cool to be educated, so I fell into that slump,” she explained. “When you’re in a peer-pressure situation where you’re forced to do what everyone else does to survive, then you end up like I did.” Blige told MTV News that kids now understand that education is vital to their success. “I look at this generation and anyone who doesn’t have an opportunity to finish or to get that education or have the confidence they need to get out and go out and get the jobs they want, I look at them like they’re as my children,” she said. “And I always want my children to have a better opportunity than I had. That’s why I’m going so hard to get them to college. “I take everyone on a journey of why this movement is so important, why the Mary J. Blige movement is so important to me,” Blige added. “I’ve done nothing but given back. My fans are loyal to me because of the journey that we’ve taken together.” As an adult, Blige said she has a very different philosophy in her own life. “I strive to be educated, to grow older gracefully, be happy and comfortable with myself,” she said. “And to have helped more women with my walk — not with what I’m saying but what they’re seeing.” What do you think of Blige’s commitment to helping young women? Even for the cast members of Glee , who are coasting through an Emmy award-winning freshman year, last week’s appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show was special. But for Harry Shum, Jr., who plays Mike Chang, the episode was his introduction to America via Matthew Morrison, who when summoned to show off his dancing abilities, turned the attention onto 25-year-old co-star: “This guy is incredible, and I’m so happy there is a show called Glee that can showcase the talents of someone who just breathes dance.” For those who were unfamiliar until last week, Shum, Jr. starred in the iconic iPod “silhouette” campaign, appeared in two Step Up movies and co-choreographed a number during this year’s Academy Awards. New Book: Oprah Winfrey Once Lived With, Boned John Tesh

In a word: Ewww!!!! At various (unfounded) points over the last few times, Oprah Winfrey has been linked romantically to BFF Gayle King. Now, the talk show queen has another report to deal with that focuses on her love life: According to an upcoming, unauthorized Oprah biographer by Kitty Kelley, Winfrey was involved with John Tesh many years ago, long before she hosted a hit talk show and started dating Stedman Graham. The pair allegedly lived together in Nashville in the mid-70s, as both worked in broadcast television there. Why did Tesh, not a syndicated radio host and musician, call off the relationship? The “social pressure” of their interracial romance, an anonymous source claims. “[He] couldn’t take it anymore…He walked out in the middle of the night…he told me he later felt very guilty about it,” said the insider. The trashy book, which seeks to exploit Oprah’s fame and private life, refers to Stedman as “boring as hell.” Without getting into specifics (likely because she has no evidence to back anything up), Kelley tried to create buzz around her book by telling USA Today : “I know people are expecting me to ‘out’ her. But I think she’s just asexual. She’s poured all of her energies into her career. And if she is, she is never, ever going to come out. So relax, people.” Yeah! Relax, people! Stop getting so worked up over a story that never had a shred of proof and is only brought up by the least respectable publications around!
