Roger Ebert’s Oprah Interview Makes Us Laugh, Cry [Go Roger, Go Roger]

Every so often, something comes along to put everything in perspective. Today it’s Roger Ebert talking about his life after losing his jaw. His honesty and courage is frankly amazing and we are touched. God, we hate feeling these emotions! First off, the funny stuff. Here Ebert talks about his last words, turning would could be sad into a deft joke. We love how he acts along with his computer voice like he’s actually speaking. Here is a story about him and his father ordering root beer. It is sad and poetic. The story continues, and after his surgery, takes on a meaning that may be a little God-y, but will probably make you cry unless you have no heart left at all. Finally, Ebert’s wife (who many commenters stupidly mistook for Oprah when we posted an excerpt this morning) reads from his journal. This man took an illness that could have been devastating and turned into a triumph. Oh, Roger Ebert, why, why must you make us cry! Just when we want to go on hating the world, you have to get all inspirational. How dare you!

Roger Ebert Talks Cancer, Movies And Root Beer On ‘Oprah’

Legendary film critic communicated via a laptop that spoke what he typed. By Eric Ditzian Chaz and Robert Ebert on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” Tuesday Photo: Harpo Productions Almost four year after cancer surgery deprived legendary film critic Roger Ebert of the ability to talk, the 67-year-old appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” to discuss his battle with the disease and his enduring love for movies, his wife Chaz and root beer. Communicating via a laptop that spoke words after he typed them, Ebert’s first statement came in response to Oprah’s question about how he feels. “Terrific,” he said. Ebert was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2002 that then spread, necessitating multiple surgeries and the eventual removal of his jaw and the lower floor of his mouth. He is now unable to talk, eat or drink, and takes his meals four times a day through a gravity-drip bag connected to his stomach. But Oprah announced that Ebert is currently cancer-free. When asked, he couldn’t recall what his final spoken words were before his surgery. “I didn’t realize at the time they were going to be my last words,” he said. “I probably spoke them to Chaz as they wheeled me into the operating room. They were probably, ‘I love you.’ At least I hope those were my last words. On the other hand, they may have been, ‘Good morning, doctor!’ ” During the interview, Ebert spoke movingly of his connection with his wife, his commitment to continuing to review films (his column is still syndicated in over 200 newspapers) and his enduring love of food. He related one dream he had about going to a root beer stand with his father as a young boy and how he woke with the frosty taste of the drink in his mind. Despite his appearance, Ebert said he has no intention of having reconstructive surgery on his face. “No more surgeries for me,” he said. “I’m not going to talk or eat or drink again. So the surgery would only be to patch my face back together. I don’t want to go through that. This is the way I look and my life is happy and productive, so why have any more surgery?… Nobody looks perfect. We have to find peace with the way we look and get on with life.”

Snort This, John: Jessica Tells Oprah She’s "Angry" Over Sex Talk

The thing John Mayer didn’t realize about napalm, sexual or otherwise, is that it can explode at the least opportune time. Like in the middle of an interview with Oprah Winfrey, which is about…

Jessica Simpson Talks About John Mayer On ‘Oprah’

‘I don’t want people to know how I am in bed!’ Simpson says in interview airing Wednesday. By Jocelyn Vena Jessica Simpson Photo: Taylor Hill/FilmMagic When Jessica Simpson sat down with Oprah Winfrey for an episode airing Wednesday, she addressed the controversial and personal comments former flame John Mayer said about her in Playboy magazine. “I don’t want people to know how I am in bed!” Simpson told Winfrey, according to UsMagazine.com . In his Playboy interview, Mayer referred to his ex as “crack cocaine” and “sexual napalm.” He also discussed personal aspects of his relationship with Jennifer Aniston. After publicly apologizing in concerts and on Twitter, Mayer thanked his fans for “believing in him” when he performed at New York’s Madison Square Garden last week. “I hate to come off like an a–hole ever, and thank you guys for believing that I am not an a–hole,” he told the crowd. “Never, ever in my entire life did I ever think that it would be a good idea to be an a–hole. But you know what? There’s plenty of a–holes who think the same thing, so I have to thank you.” On “Oprah,” Simpson also talked about the public reaction to her weight gain last year. “You were a size 4 and people were calling you fat?” Oprah asked the pop star on her show. Although she received support from celebrities and sister Ashlee , Simpson admitted that it’s still a sore subject. “It’s a really hard thing for me to talk about,” she said. But the resilient star seems to have turned that negative experience into an opportunity, since she’ll explore the issue on her new show “The Price of Beauty,” set to debut March 15 on VH1. Jay Leno’s New ‘Tonight Show’: What To Expect

Leno returns to 11:30 tonight, but will viewers be back with him? By Eric Ditzian Jay Leno Photo: NBC Will America forgive Jay Leno? Can the comedian who built a career on his just-one-of-the-guys niceness overcome the negative publicity surrounding the Late-Night Wars of 2010 and retake his position as a ratings king 10 months after he ceded his “Tonight Show” desk to Conan O’Brien? The answers will begin to become clear when Leno returns to “Tonight” on Monday (March 1) and encounters a TV landscape that has undergone significant changes in the last few months. To begin, David Letterman now reigns as the late-night champ, and his “Late Show” lineup this week — Bill Murray, Mitt Romney, Jerry Seinfeld, Tom Hanks and Matt Damon — represents the booking equivalent of a we-ain’t-going-down-without-a-fight battle cry. What’s more, NBC has returned the 10 p.m. hour to scripted programming — including new comedies like “Parenthood” and old favorites like “Law & Order” and “Law & Order: SVU” — meaning Leno won’t have to deal with a middling talk show as his lead-in, as Conan had to with “The Jay Leno Show.” But Leno’s prospects for success with his rebooted “Tonight Show” will rest solely on his chin. The host averaged 5.2 million viewers for “Tonight” before Conan took over, and then he averaged 5.3 million in prime time. Jay undoubtedly has a loyal following. Whether those viewers became comfortable watching Letterman or were turned off during the late-night brouhaha remains to be seen. We can expect Leno to debut big this week. The key will be to see how he performs in the weeks to come. What will “Tonight 2.0” look like? Leno is staying in the same studio he occupied during his prime-time show, but it’s received a makeover that will have the set sporting a new color scheme and once again displaying the familiar desk-and-couch interview configuration. You’ll hardly notice the departure of announcer John Melendez, while bandleader Kevin Eubanks , who’s rumored to be working toward an eventual exit, will still be there to chuckle at even Leno’s most groan-inducing quips. Leno is importing some successful bits from his 10 o’clock show, including field reports from other comedians and the “Cop N Kitty” sketch, as well as old standards like headlines and Jaywalking. The week’s guest lineup features Jamie Foxx, Sarah Palin, the “Jersey Shore” cast and Olympians Lindsey Vonn and Shaun White. It will be interesting to see how directly Leno addresses the circumstances surrounding the premiere show. Will he reference the ugliness in his opening monologue? And who will be watching if he does? NBC has been pumping Leno’s return with Olympic spots for the past two weeks, but the buildup pales in comparison to the “prime time will never be the same” circus that surrounded Jay’s move to 10 p.m. There have been no interviews, save for a messy one with Oprah Winfrey back in January. NBC seems to be negotiating a tricky bit of programming wizardry, hoping viewers are aware that Jay is back at “Tonight,” but when they click over on Monday night, they might just think Conan’s “Tonight” stint was nothing but a bad dream. Will O’Brien himself be watching? The disposed host has recently opened up a Twitter account , from which he’s documented his unemployed life. “This morning I watched ‘Remington Steele’ while eating Sugar Smacks out of a salad bowl,” he recently wrote. “I was naked.” Will Coco address the nation during the same time slot that Leno does? America will be watching. Will you tune in for Leno’s return to “The Tonight Show”? Have you soured on the comedian since the Conan O’Brien debacle? Let us know below!

Adam Lambert Picks His ‘American Idol’ Favorite: Todrick Hall

Last year’s runner-up also tweets support for Casey James and Andrew Garcia. By Hillary Crosley Adam Lambert Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Not one for holding his tongue , “American Idol” alum Adam Lambert tweeted about his favorite contestant of the new season: Todrick Hall . “[Todrick is] def gonna surprise us!! Mad talent!! Def the full package,” Lambert tweeted . And the “Whataya Want From Me” singer didn’t stop before congratulating competitors Casey James and Andrew Garcia as well. “Casey is def the real deal. Authentic. Andrew Garcia’s too,” he added. While each of the contestants has their own strengths, Hall and Lambert come from the same musical-theater background. Lambert brought his performance experience from the Los Angeles cast of “Wicked” to “American Idol.” On the other hand, Hall, a 24-year-old “actor/playwright” from Arlington, Texas, acted beside “Idol” winner Fantasia Barrino in Oprah Winfrey’s “The Color Purple” and was part of the Disney World productions of “High School Musical 2” and “Beauty and the Beast.” Lambert’s Twitter support is also a bit nostalgic, considering “Idol” alumni like Kelly Clarkson joined Team Lambert last year. Season-five finalist Chris Daughtry also put in his two cents about the men on Twitter , simply writing, “Ouch…that’s all,” after Wednesday night’s live-performance show. Lambert’s opinion on Hall didn’t quite match our top 12 men’s report card . Instead, James’ acoustic version of Bryan Adams’ “Heaven” put him on top. We voted Hall’s take on Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone” as satisfactory, but the kid showed guts. Jay Leno Welcomes Kristen Stewart, Simon Cowell Back To ‘Tonight Show’

Jamie Foxx, cast of ‘Jersey Shore’ and more stars will chat with Leno during his first few weeks back hosting ‘The Tonight Show.’ By Jocelyn Vena Kristen Stewart Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” is set to make its return on March 1 and some of the biggest stars in Hollywood will be stopping by as Leno begins his second tenure as the host of the late-night program. Jamie Foxx, Olympic gold medal skier Lindsey Vonn and Brad Paisley will be the show’s first guests on Monday. Sarah Palin, Olympic gold medal snowboarder Shaun White, the cast of “Jersey Shore,” Chelsea Handler, Olympic speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno, Avril Lavigne, Matthew McConaughey, Jason Reitman, Morgan Freeman and Meredith Vieira round out the guest list for Leno’s first week back. Week two sees everyone from Simon Cowell to Kristen Stewart stopping by to chat, with other second-week guests including “Inglourious Basterds” star Christoph Waltz, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Kim Kardashian, Colbie Caillat, Dakota Fanning and Judd Apatow. After the cancelation of his 10 p.m. show, Leno took the “Tonight Show” seat back from Conan O’Brien in a move that had many fans and celebrities speaking out against NBC, including Sarah Silverman and “Southland” star Ben McKenzie. “I had a show; my show got canceled,” Leno told Oprah Winfrey on her show last month. “They weren’t happy with the other guy’s show. They said, ‘We want you to go back.’ I said, ‘OK.’ And this seemed to make a lot of people really upset. And I go, ‘Well, who wouldn’t take that job, though? Who wouldn’t do that?’ And it was really agonizing. And I would spend a lot of time just thinking about it, going, ‘I think I’m a good guy. Am I not a good guy?’ Maybe I’m just one of those guys who thinks I see everything with the rose-color glasses and the world is falling around you.”

‘We Are The World’ Remake Includes Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie Reveals

‘He had to be there,’ Richie says on ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Lionel Richie on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” Friday Photo: Harpo Michael Jackson was an integral part of the first “We Are the World,” from co-writing the song to singing it alongside a gang of fellow celebrities. Twenty-five years later, and only hours before “We Are the World — 25 for Haiti” was set to premiere , Lionel Richie revealed on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” Friday (February 12) that the late King of Pop will be part of the remake’s song and video. “He had to be there,” Richie told the talk-show host. “If you’re not gonna be there for the production, you still gotta be a part of it.” Jackson’s vocals will lead the new all-star cast through the famous refrain on the song’s chorus, Richie said. And in the Paul Haggis-directed clip , archive footage of MJ singing from the original shoot will appear alongside his sister Janet Jackson in the new video. “We have Michael singing that exact part [the chorus] and Janet singing along with him,” Richie said, describing the moment as “emotional.” “We Are the World — 25 for Haiti” is scheduled to debut on NBC during the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The song was produced by frequent Lady Gaga collaborator RedOne and will feature a bevy of artists and actors, including Lil Wayne, Kanye West, Pink, Jennifer Hudson, Josh Groban and many others.
