Oprah Winfrey Says She Was On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown Tyler deserves a humanitarian of the year award, because without him performing a captain save a ho with “The Haves And Have Nots,” Oprah would have had that nervous breakdown. According to The Toronto Sun Media mogul Oprah Winfrey forced herself to take a step back from her heavy workload last summer after realizing she was on the brink of a nervous breakdown as she struggled to turn her TV network into a success. The TV icon walked away from her hit talk show in May, 2011, after 25 years at the top, to focus on the launch of the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) with bosses from cable company Discovery Communications. However, the channel struggled to attract viewers in its first year on air and Winfrey was forced to take a serious look at reshuffling its programming line-up in order to appeal to audiences. The superstar admits she was really feeling the pressure to turn OWN’s fortunes around, but it was only when she interviewed Jason Russell, the man behind the high-profile KONY 2012 campaign, about his emotional breakdown which led to his bizarre naked rant and arrest last year, that she recognized she was experiencing similar mental issues. She tells People magazine, “Jason was talking about having a nervous breakdown, and I was thinking, ‘I have those symptoms’.” Winfrey’s breaking point came just days later as she headed into the OWN headquarters in Los Angeles to record voice-overs for her shows: “I remember closing my eyes while I was reading. I thought, ‘I cannot have another thing enter my brain.’ I needed to pull back.” She confesses the harsh press criticism of her network hit her hard, and she credits her longterm partner, Stedman Graham, with helping her soldier on to overcome the disappointing start. She says, “After 25 years of being number one, I had become accustomed to success. I didn’t expect failure. I was tested and I had to dig deep. The schadenfreude (pleasure from misfortune of others) was very painful for me, because I had never experienced it. “(Graham) was amazing. He said, ‘You can’t eve think about quitting. You have been in cruise control. It’s gonna turn around, but you’ve gotta do the work.’” Now that OWN is a success, will you be tuning in?
Oprah Winfrey’s apology over the racism flap she caused by recalling a trip to Switzerland in a recent interview has been criticized by some as inauthentic. Oprah Winfrey on Paula Deen, Racism Earlier this week, she said she was “sorry” for fallout that ensued after she told ET about a racist encounter at a purse store in the European country. The Butler star made the allegations (above) when asked about a time she encountered racism personally – in Switzerland, where no one knows her. She claimed a shop owner refused to even show her a ridiculously expensive purse, assuming she could not afford it, presumably because she’s black. The COUNTRY of Switzerland apologized, while the shop owner says the whole thing was a “misunderstanding” and had “nothing to do with racism.” Last night, Oprah backpedaled a bit, apologizing for the racism controversy , saying, “I think that incident in Switzerland was just an incident in Switzerland.” “I’m really sorry that it got blown up,” Winfrey added. “I purposefully did not mention the name of the store. I’m sorry that I said it was Switzerland.” The thing is, as TMZ notes, Oprah couldn’t possibly believe allegations of racism made by OPRAH would go unreported or taken lightly by the media. Pretending not to know that telling that story would spark controversy and become a huge story would be naive at best … and Oprah is far from that. The question is: Does she feel legitimately bad about potentially blowing something out of proportion, or is she just walking it back to save face now? According to the celebrity gossip site, Oprah’s encounter wasn’t really about race, but the fact that she wasn’t treated the way she is accustomed to. A source told the magazine the summer sojourn “was a really good time for them to spend time together and focus on each other,” and according to their sources, it was a success. “They’re focused on the marriage, they’re committed to the relationship [and] they adore each other,” a source told the magazine. A separate source told the magazine that the marriage’s rough spots could be attributed to Lamar’s edginess under the white hot Kardashian spotlight; and professional frustration as his hoops career game seems to be in a state of slow decline as he enters his mid-30s. “Lamar goes through mood swings and depression,” the source said, adding his trade away from the Los Angeles Lakers in late-2011 “ruined his Mojo” for some time.
