Mythbusters Sink Titanic Logic: Jack Didn’t Have To Die?!

I’ve watched Leonardo DiCaprio die a dozen times as Jack Dawson in Titanic , each time cursing that Rose ( Kate Winslet ) for not sharing the Floating Debris of Life with her doomed lover. With every frail tweet of that rescue whistle, every whispered ” Come baaaack! ” I’ve wondered: Did Jack really have to die? Now we have our answer. The good folks on The Discovery Channel’s MythBusters must have shared my nagging concerns, because they put Jack’s Titanic death scene to the test. Could two human beings have fit on Rose’s makeshift raft, and therefore survived to live happily ever after sketching nudie pics of each other forever in Paris?? Granted, Jack was a streetwise, card-playing, jig-dancing sensitive artiste with probably zero physics training, so he probably wouldn’t have thought to tie Rose’s life jacket to the bottom of the debris to give it enough buoyancy to hold the two of them. But if he hadn’t had to shove over to let stupid Rose cling to the entire thing Jack wouldn’t have had to chill, literally, in the freezing waters, and maybe then he wouldn’t have died of sinking like a beautiful popsicle to the bottom of the ocean. Or as you fancypants science types call it, hypothermia. “With all we’ve learned, I think Jack’s death is needless,” co-host Jamie Hyneman tells James Cameron , who appears in the episode. Cameron’s response? “The script says Jack dies. He has to die.” DAMN YOU, CAMERON. [ MythBusters via Thompson on Hollywood ] Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Good Evening Hitchcock, Your Trailer Is Served

Only weeks ahead of its world premiere as the opening film at AFI Fest comes a glimpse of Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren starrer, Hitchcock . Like the festival’s closing night counterpart, Lincoln , the title will no doubt be an awards-season heavy-weight. The legendary filmmaker and his wife Alma Reville (Mirren) take the focus in the Sacha Gervasi-directed feature, which is set against the backdrop of filming Hitchcock’s Psycho in 1959. The trailer opens with Hopkins talking about violence and horror and he’s just a man “behind the scenes with a camera.” Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel, Vera Miles, James D’Arcy, Danny Huston and Toni Collette also star in the film, which spans from the time of Wisconsin murder Ed Gein, the inspiration for Psycho ‘s Norman Bates character, to the release of the lauded film in 1960. Hitchcock and Reville’s marriage comes under strain due to the filmmaker’s determination to complete the film. Fox Searchlight, which will release Hitchcock beginning November 23rd, will likely have a multiple Oscar-nominated pic on its hands if the trailer is any indication. What do you think?

Screenwriter Nora Ephron Dead At 71

Oscar-nominated writer of ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ and ‘When Harry Met Sally … ‘ died of pneumonia. By Josh Wigler Nora Ephron Photo: Academy Award-nominated screenwriter and director Nora Ephron died Tuesday (June 26) from pneumonia. She was 71. News of Ephron’s passing first hit the Internet late Tuesday when journalist Liz Smith, a friend of Ephron’s, published a column remembering the late director. “She never gave the answer I expected to anything. She was grave in her humor, which made it deadly, unexpected, truly funny and dauntingly intelligent,” wrote Smith. “She seemed never to want or expect anything, while always demanding the best from the rest of us. She was — always — right and somehow left the smartest, most ambitious and silliest of us in the dust at her feet.” Ephron lived a storied life both on set and behind the scenes. Born in New York City in 1941 and raised in Beverly Hills, California, Ephron worked as a journalist for numerous years before trying her hand writing and directing for film. Her writing appeared in such outlets as Esquire and New York, and she was even married to Carl Bernstein of Watergate fame from 1976 until 1980. She later wed screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi in 1987; they remained married until the time of her death. In 1983, Ephron’s first major Hollywood movie, “Silkwood,” arrived in theaters. Starring marquee names including Meryl Streep, Kurt Russell and Cher, Ephron’s “Silkwood” was based on the true story of Karen Silkwood, who was killed in a suspicious accident during her investigation into the unethical practices of the nuclear power plant that employed her. The film was nominated for five Oscars, including one for Ephron’s screenplay. Over the course of her career, Ephron cemented her place in Hollywood as one of the industry’s finest romantic comedy writers. She wrote the iconic “When Harry Met Sally … ” and directed numerous films, including the Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan-starring “Sleepless in Seattle” and “You’ve Got Mail.” Her final film as writer and director was “Julie & Julia.” “I won’t say, ‘Rest in peace, Nora,’ ” Smith wrote in her eulogy of Ephron. “I will just ask, ‘What the hell will we do without you?’ ” Share your condolences for Ephron’s family and friends in the comments. Rihanna ‘Cried Laughing’ At James Franco’s Video

After seeing his take on ‘You Da One,’ Rihanna reveals she’s in talks to appear alongside the actor in ‘The Apocalypse.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Rihanna at “MTV First: Battleship” Photo: MTV News Rihanna and James Franco might want to get a room. These two have been gushing about one another all over the press — but, it’s just business. MTV News caught up with Franco at CinemaCon in Las Vegas , where he opened up about almost being cast in Ri’s “We Found Love” video and how the pair might eventually appear together in the flick “The Apocalypse.” RiRi later revealed that she’s just as big a fan of Franco’s work as he is of hers. How big of a fan is he? Well, the actor recently released a viral video of himself lip-syncing “You Da One.” “I love James Franco,” Rihanna told MTV News during “MTV First: Battleship.” Referring to the online video of Franco singing his heart out to her Dr. Luke-produced Talk That Talk single, she added, “Someone sent this to me via Twitter, and I watched that. I cried laughing.” After learning that the frizzy-haired man in the clip was indeed the Oscar-nominated actor, Rihanna couldn’t believe he knew her music that well. “First of all, I didn’t recognize that it was him like that, and then I didn’t recognize it was him singing my song,” she said. “And it was kind of cool because I’m a huge fan of James Franco, so it was dope to know that he even knew my record.” About the chatter that she might appear with Franco in Seth Rogen’s movie “The Apocalypse,” well, that is still up in the air. But if she should join him, she might be playing one of the celebs partying at Franco’s house when they learn the apocalypse is coming. “That’s in the works,” she said. “I can’t really say. Nothing’s confirmed, but it’s open, and we’re interested.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Battleship.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
