MACRO Media Company Signs First-Look Deal With Warner Bros.

C harles D. King —the producer behind pivotal films like Fences , Mudbound and Sorry to Bother You —recently made a power move in the entertainment industry. According to Deadline , King’s media company MACRO has inked a first-look deal with Warner Bros. One of the projects that King is currently working on through his production company is a film entitled Jesus Was My Homeboy , which is about the life story of Black Panther Party member Fred Hampton . Director Ryan Coogler and WB will work on the project as well. Actors Lakeith Stanfield and Daniel Kaluuya may star in the film. Through the deal with Warner Bros., King wants to bring more stories like these to the forefront. “We are thrilled to join forces with Warner Bros. Pictures and their visionary leadership team whose bold choices have led to some of our industry’s most successful and impactful films,” said King in a statement, according to the news outlet. “This expertise, combined with WarnerMedia and AT&T’s global assets and distribution, offers MACRO an unparalleled opportunity to expand our reach and further our mission of identifying and producing authentic stories by and about people of color.” The Warner Bros. leadership team is excited about working with MACRO. WB Production Head Courtenay Valenti and the studio’s chairman Toby Emmerich said that they are looking forward to producing films that “highlight the authenticity and importance of diversity.” Black producers are landing major production deals. In January, actor Michael B. Jordan ’s production company Outlier Society inked a first-look deal with Warner Bros. In February Marsai Martin signed a first-look deal with Universal through her company Genius Productions. B. Smith’s Step-Daughter Drags “Fraudulent Friend” Whoopi Goldberg For Criticizing Dad’s Extramarital Swirl

The family fell under criticism recently when the story of her dad moving his girlfriend into the home where his wife battled Alzheimer’s spread . On a recent episode of The View , Whoopi was uncomfortable with it, calling B a friend. ““I didn’t want to see B look like that,” said Goldberg. “I didn’t need to see that.”   Dana Gasby , 32, tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue, her step-mom is a “physically strong toddler who speaks in gibberish,” who sometimes needs to be forced to shower and use the toilet. She wants Whoopi and others judging to HUSH with their judgment. “These fraudulent friends know nothing. I have not seen them here,” says Dana, who moved back home three years ago to care for Smith. “They don’t call my family. I see them talking on TV and how do you know what your supposed ‘friend’ would want?” Dana fully supports the relationship between her father and Alex, his girlfriend. She says she hears Goldberg’s criticism of the video showing Smith’s day-to-day reality and wonders: is it “because you’re getting older and not happy with your health or whatever and you decide it’s not ok? Guess what—this is what aging is.” Thoughts?

Always Working: Michael B. Jordan Is Adapting The New African Fantasy Novel ‘Black Leopard, Red Wolf’

Jordan  has officially grabbed the rights for a just-released fantasy novel titled,  Black Leopard, Red Wolf.  The novel has been described by celebrated author Marlon James as an “African  Game of Thrones”  and Jordan has secured the release via his recently launched Outlier Society production company. Jordan just signed a first-look development deal with Warner Bros. last month and  Black Leopard, Red Wolf  is the first project Outlier has launched since that deal was closed. The story follows a group of mercenaries as they track a kidnaped boy across a fantastical version of the African continent. This book is the first in a planned  Dark Star Trilogy,  which will follow the characters as they encounter giants, witches, beasts and, of course, other people whose motives might run counter to their own. No screenwriter has been been decided on for the project yet and there’s no intel on who will play the story’s lead. Marlon James, the author behind the Man Booker prize-winning  A Brief History of Seven Killings , will be an executive producer on the film. It looks like Michael B. Jordan is starting to make his move from in front of the camera to behind it more and more each day.
