Jay Electronica Says Act I Sequel Will Be ‘Finished Soon’

MC wants to drop heavily anticipated follow-up to Eternal Sunshine mixtape on September 19, his birthday. By Jayson Rodriguez Jay Electronica Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images Jay Electronica is on what can best be described as a world tour. Stationed now in London after making stops in Egypt and Jordan, the New Orleans rapper says he’s overseas both out of curiosity and for work purposes. Electronica is wrapping up Act II, the follow-up to his much-heralded mixtape Act I: Eternal Sunshine (The Pledge). His next tape will feature the breakout track “Exhibit C” and mark the first offering from the nomadic MC since he premiered the Just Blaze-produced single earlier this year on Eminem’s SiriusXM satellite radio station, Shade 45. “It’s gonna be finished soon,” Jay Elect told the UK’s DJ Semtex about Act II during a recent interview . “I want to release it on my birthday, that’s September 19, and I’m pushing toward that.” Electronica has raised his profile over the past year or so, from live tweeting the birth of his and Erykah Badu’s child to delivering stellar live shows. He’s also dropped a select sampling of bangers, including “The Birth of Christopher Wallace.” In addition to “Exhibit C,” “Dear Moleskin” is expected to be featured on Act II, as well as collaborations with Nas; production duties are shared by Just Blaze, Dilla, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Mr. Porter and the rapper himself. “I never got a moment where I feel I made it, victory, completion,” Jay told Mixtape Daily back in February. “I’ve had moments of excitement. I can’t believe people are responding like this. It’s an overwhelming thing — even though it’s something you planned for, it’s a surprise.” Are you looking forward to Jay Electronica’s next mixtape? Canadian Government Decides Penis-Measuring Lie Detector for Children Not Such a Great Idea

Oh boy—where even to start with this one. Use of penile plethysmography (PPG), which measure your penis for arousal while viewing questionable content, is being ceased by the Canadian government. After being used on kids for 25 years. PPG testing, almost too perverse to believe it was actually a government-sanctioned procedure, was employed in British Columbia as a means of interrogating child sex offenders. A sensor was strapped to a child's penis, monitoring blood flow while the kid was subjected to images of other nude children, and audio descriptions of rape. Reread that sentence if necessary. The reasoning—if you can even call it that—behind the test was to discern whether a child offender was lying about his or her desires, though we have a feeling this treatment probably created far more sociopaths than it screened. As Boing Boing points out, and as any adolescent can tell you, erections aren't exactly the most objectively predictable phenomenon, refuting entirely the purpose of the test. British Columbia's Minister of Children and Family Development has put an end to PPG after the revelation that a technician administering the test was himself a sex offender. The levels of perversion-within-perversion here are dizzying. The Canadian government will now begin an official inquiry into trauma victims among the children subjected to PPG over the past decades—an investigation we have a feeling will not be a short one. added by: Omnomynous

Scientists Observe Fastest Evolution Ever

University of British Columbia researchers have observed one of the fastest evolutionary responses ever recorded in wild populations. In as little as three years, stickleback fish developed tolerance for water temperature 2.5 degrees Celsius lower than their ancestors. The study, published in the current issue of the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, provides the some of the first experimental evidence that evolution may help populations survive effects of climate change. Measuring three to 10 centimetres, stickleback fish originated in the ocean but began populating freshwater lakes and streams following the last ice age. Over the past 10,000 years, marine and freshwater sticklebacks have evolved different physical and behavioural traits, making them ideal models for Darwin’s natural selection theory. “By testing the temperature tolerance of wild and lab-raised sticklebacks, we were able to determine that freshwater sticklebacks can tolerate lower temperatures than their marine counterparts,” says lead author Rowan Barrett from the UBC Department of Zoology. “This made sense from an evolutionary perspective because their ancestors were able to adapt to freshwater lakes, which typically reach colder temperatures than the ocean.” http://science.ubc.ca/news/449 added by: ibrake4rappers13

White House apologizes to Shirley Sherrod

This is a good start: At the press briefing just now, Robert Gibbs apeared to extend a heartfelt apology to Shirley Sherrod on behalf of the Obama administration, and promised a look at what went wrong. Interestingly, though, he sidestepped a question about whether fear of the conservative media drove the decision to fire Sherrod before the facts were all in. Here's what Gibbs said, referring to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack: The secretary is trying to reach her. I hope the secretary reaches her soon, and they have an opportunity to talk. The Secretary will apologize for the actions that have taken place over the past 24 to 36 hours. And on behalf of the administration, I offer our apologies. Gibbs also seemed to promise some kind of reckoning as to how the White House botched this mess, though he stopped short of promising anything official: I think everybody has to go back and look at what has happened over the past 24 to 36 hours, and ask ourselves how we got into this. How did we not ask the right questions? How did you all not ask the right questions? How did other people not ask the right questions? When asked directly by a reporter whether the administration had “overreacted” because the White House is “afraid” of the conservative media, Gibbs brushed off the question. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/plum-line/2010/07/white_house_apologizes_to_shi… added by: unimatrix0

This Can’t Be Good: BP Delays Pressure Tests and Stops Drilling Relief Well

Photo: BP Only Bad News on the Oil Spill Today After some good news in the past couple of days, BP is going back to what it has accustomed us to over the past few months: bad news. The first of these is that despite the fact that the cap has been fitted over the oil leak, the pressure tests to determine if the leak can be completely captured by this new ‘top hat’ will have to wait for “further analysis” (this was decided after a meeting with Steven Chu and his team of advisers). The second piece of bad n… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Exclusive: Pete Wentz Talks Mysterious New Black Cards Project

‘Later tonight and this week there will be more of Bl4ck C4rds revealed,’ he cryptically tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Pete Wentz Photo: Soul Brother/ FilmMagic For a guy so used to talking about, well, everything, Pete Wentz has been rather tight-lipped when it comes to Black Cards (or, as he puts it, “Bl4ck C4rds”), the mysterious new project he’s been putting together over the past few months. So far, there has been just a simple blog post about the thing, which included a link to the new Black Cards website and a message from Wentz that “there will be no treasure hunt. [No] viral campaign … just the opposite. Next week things will appear on this site in a very controlled distribution.” And he wasn’t kidding. The site now features a snippet of one song — an electronic, Elfman-via-Mos Eisley Cantina composition featuring a female singer, reportedly called “A Club Called Heaven” — and on Monday, Wentz took to his Twitter account to promise that there’d be even more Black Cards stuff coming Tuesday night (July 6). But other than that, he’s played the Cards close to the vest, and he kept it up when MTV News e-mailed him for more information on the project, writing only: “Later tonight and this week there will be more of Bl4ck C4rds revealed.” Of course, we sent him a follow-up e-mail, one that asked him just who is actually in the group (former Chiodos frontman Craig Owens seems to be involved, since he posted a short video playing a snippet of the same song on Vimeo ). More specifically, we had to know the identity of the much-discussed female singer, who some fans believe is Wentz’s wife, Ashlee Simpson. And, in keeping with recent form, this is how he replied: “Nobody is guessing right so far.” With that, the mystery continues to grow — until (presumably) Thursday night, at least. Are you curious to find out more about Wentz’s Black Cards? Let us know your theories the comments!

Baby African crowned crane gets a new pair of booties

By far the cutest news of the day containing two very sweet photographs. This tiny fluffeh chick suffered from the problem of curled feet (bird toes?) and being a member of a vulnerable species the tiny birdie needed help. Of course, the action required the zoo keepers to make tiny bird slippers out of green bandages, n'aaaaaw. ‘The chick is doing very well and the park keepers take it for walks to strengthen those legs. ‘We were delighted when one hatched. So the keepers are now full-time mums with two hourly feeds and giving some much needed tender loving care to this little one.’’-Metro added by: Mcellie

Billings, Montana police take on duty of delivering medical pot when parcel services won’t

BILLINGS – The conflict between state and federal laws over the legality of medical marijuana is forcing some law enforcement officers to take on the unwelcome duty of delivering pot that caregivers attempt to ship through a parcel service. Over the past year, the Billings Police Department has received an increasing number of calls from FedEx and UPS workers who discover packages containing what appears to be legal medical marijuana. A police investigator must then pick up the package, make phone calls to determine whether it is a legal product produced by a medical marijuana caregiver who is registered with the state and notify the distributor to retrieve the shipment. All that can add up to several hours of police time. Then, the caregiver may not pick up their product, saddling the cops with returning the marijuana to them personally. “We don't want to be in the middle as a broker,” said Billings Police Chief Rich St. John. “We're wasting a lot of time investigating and looking into legitimate businesses.” http://missoulian.com/news/state-and-regional/article_9313965c-8703-11df-be7c-00… added by: JackHerer

Obama’s The Biggest Political Recipient of BP Cash

BP and its employees have given more than $3.5 million to federal candidates over the past 20 years, with the largest chunk of their money going to Obama, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Donations come from a mix of employees and the company's political action committees – $2.89 million flowed to campaigns from BP-related PACs and about $638,000 came from individuals. On top of that, the oil giant has spent millions each year on lobbying — including $15.9 million last year alone — as it has tried to influence energy policy. During his time in the Senate and while running for president, Obama received a total of $77,051 from the oil giant and is the top recipient of BP PAC and individual money over the past 20 years, according to financial disclosure records….. http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE64420A20100505 added by: shanklinmike
