Amazon Deforestation Rate is the Lowest in Decades

Photo: Stephen Messenger Over the past several years, the Brazilian government has been tackling deforestation in the Amazon with vigor, and it seems all their efforts are paying off. In an announcement made today, Brazil confirmed that the rate of forest loss over the last year represents the lowest in over two decades since record-keeping began — and down over 13 percent from the last year. The nation’s Environmental Minister describes the progress as “fantastic.” … Read the full story on TreeHugger

NPR’s Dirty Campaigners of the Week: ‘Conservative Bloggers’ Push ‘Bold’ Pro-lifer to Head Bishops Group

The U.S. Catholic bishops' conference disappointed liberals this week by choosing a leader who agreed with the bishops' campaign this year against pro-abortion provisions in ObamaCare. On Tuesday night's All Things Considered, NPR religion reporter Barbara Bradley Hagerty reported the expected moderate winner was apparently smeared by “conservative Catholic bloggers” for being too close to the sex-abuse scandal. (This might be the first time reporters have felt bad about bishops over the sex-abuse scandal.) Hagerty reported: It's not clear what tipped the election. But over the past few days, conservative Catholic bloggers and activists have waged a campaign against [Tucson Bishop Gerald] Kicanas, who's considered a moderate with a conciliatory style. His critics sent faxes and left voicemails telling bishops to vote against Kicanas, saying Kicanas had been tainted by the sex abuse scandal when he had recommended an abuser to be ordained as a priest. Kicanas flatly denied knowing about any abuse of minors. But that did not save him. The bishops elected the media-savvy Timothy Dolan, who's considered one of the boldest and more orthodox bishops, and who's willing to speak loudly and publicly on issues like abortion, same-sex marriage and stem cell research. read more

New York Magazine Columnist: Jon Stewart ‘Invaluable’ as Media Critic; ‘Most Trusted Man in America’

Lauding Jon Stewart’s biting humor and criticism of today’s politicized media, NY Magazine columnist Chris Smith called him “Cronkite, the most trusted man in America” in his piece featured on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Friday. The show’s panel largely agreed with him and emphasized that Stewart is bi-partisan in his comedy. “The right provides better raw material, but Stewart’s complaints are bi-partisan,” Smith writes in his column ” America is a Joke .” On MSNBC, Smith described Stewart as a “comedy opportunist, you know, where people do mockable things – left, right, in-between.” The show’s co-host Joe Scarborough joined Smith in diffusing the myth that Stewart is a raging liberal. “Over the past year, he’s been every bit as tough on the Obama administration as Republicans on Capitol Hill,” he asserted.   The panel seemed to agree that Stewart is hilarious, but pressed about the anger that lies underneath his cynicism. Smith affirmed this. “Oh, no question, that’s what gives [his humor] weight and bite, and you know, he admits to being angry every day, and the show gives him the catharsis, you know, it gives him the chance to point things out. And it’s not just anger for the sake of anger.” Smith added that Stewart’s angry criticisms sometimes pass for reporting as well. “You know, he did something three, four weeks ago that maybe you guys covered – I certainly didn’t….But pointing out that Fox has been taking all these shots at the mosque, and who’s funding it – and then they go and do their homework to say well, NewsCorp’s second-largest investor is a Saudi prince. You know, that’s reporting as much as it is anger or humor.” A transcript of highlights from the segment, which aired on September 17, at 7:42 a.m. EDT, is as follows: CHRIS SMITH, columnist, New York magazine: Some things that have happened in the real world, many of them not funny, have given him openings. And the polarization of media – you know, cable channels, Fox obviously the biggest culprit, has given Stewart a middle to both poke fun at and sort of represent in some ways. (…) WILLIE GEIST: Is he driven by anger? Because when you read the things he says about the media, he holds the media in utter contempt, almost across the board. That includes the right and the left. SMITH: Yeah, uh, anger and a faint, naive hope for intelligence to rule the day – you know, he still thinks there’s some dream state, you know, of American political discourse where we can be nicer to each other and have genuine arguments, but have them be based on fact and not emotion. (…) JOE SCARBOROUGH: …over the past year, he’s been every bit as tough on the Obama administration as Republicans on Capitol Hill, and he also has been tough on extremists on the left as well as extremists on the right. Um, Have you – have you noted that in your piece? Have you talked about the fact that he goes after the left now as aggressively as the right in many cases? SMITH: Certainly, and it’s not out of any agenda, you know, big picture-attempt to be “fair and balanced,” to coin a phrase. But he is a comedy opportunist, you know, where people do mockable things, left, right, in-between. He’s going to go for the punchline. (…) SCARBOROUGH: And Mika, you’ve always talked about his brilliance….But John Stewart works hard, but the guy, as you always say, is brilliant. He’s one of the smartest guys on TV. (…) MIKA BRZEZINSKI: …I do think that there’s a tinge of anger in a lot of his humor. SMITH: Oh, no question, that’s what gives it weight and bite, and you know, he admits to being angry every day, and the show gives him the catharsis, you know, it gives him the chance to point things out. And it’s not just anger for the sake of anger. You know, he did something three, four weeks ago that maybe you guys covered – I certainly didn’t….But pointing out that Fox has been taking all these shots at the mosque, and who’s funding it. And then they go and do their homework to say well, NewsCorp’s second-largest investor is a Saudi prince, you know, that’s reporting as much as it is anger or humor.

Melting Ice Forces 10,000 Walruses Ashore in Alaska

(Sept. 15) — Female walruses traditionally like to spend the summer lounging on slabs of sea ice with their young, occasionally dipping into shallow Arctic waters for a fishy treat. But over the past few weeks, thousands of these mammals have given up their free-floating lifestyle and taken up residence along the Alaska side of the Chukchi Sea. An estimated 10,000 to 20,000 Pacific walruses — mainly mothers and calves — are resting along the coastline, gathered together in tightly clustered pods, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. (Bulls normally splash around the Bering Sea in summer months.) Because only 20 percent of walruses normally come to shore, the Alaska Dispatch notes, scientists suspect another 80,000 walruses could be swimming close by. This is the third time such a sea-to-land migration — common in Russia, but historically unprecedented in Alaska — has taken place in the last four years. This unusual behavior appears to have been triggered by the slow warming of the Arctic waters through climate change, which in turn has shrunk the amount of thick, walrus-suitable sea ice. Last week, the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center reported that Arctic sea ice coverage had fallen to its third-lowest level since records began in 1979; only 2007 and 2008 saw lower levels. added by: TimALoftis

AUSTRALIA: Exposure to chemical TBT causes female snails to grow penises on heads

FEMALE marine snails living off the Perth coast are growing male sex organs on their heads after exposure to the chemical TBT, according to local researchers. Curtin University researchers have revealed the snails are suffering from imposex, a condition that involves the development of a second sex organ after being exposed to the chemical. Unlike garden snails, which are hermaphrodites, this species of marine snail has distinct sexes. Curtin's Department of Environment and Agriculture Associate Professor Monique Gagnon said studies on the marine snail Thais orbita over the past 10 years showed that although TBT contamination had declined at sites visited by recreational boats, a 100 per cent rate of imposex still existed at sites where commercial vessels were present. “These high levels are believed to be related to the continuous input of TBT into the area over a period of years, resulting in the presence of significant quantities in the sediment on the sea floor,” she said. Associate Professor Gagnon said Fremantle port and the Garden Island naval facility were the main sites where TBT contamination was present in the Perth region. She said studies had shown that imposex could stop the females from procreating, potentially reducing the number of snails in the shoreline environment. The samples of Thais orbita were collected along the Perth coast between March and June 2009. added by: eden49

Over 50s urged to practise safe sex

http://www.news.com.au/breaking-news/over-50s-urged-to-practise-safe-sex/story-e… BRITISH baby boomers are being urged to practice safe sex after new figures showed an alarming rise in sexually transmitted infections among the over-50s. Health charity Family Planning Association has launched a national campaign using fashion adverts from the 1960s and '70s to encourage members of the baby boomer generation to use condoms, The Independent reports. The campaign posters bear the phrase: “Remember wearing this?”, next to an image of someone posing in an outfit from the period, adding: “Then remember to wear this” beside an image of a condom packet. Recent figures from the Health Protection Agency show a rise in people in their 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s having sex with new partners over the past 10 years. That trend has led to an increase in the five main sexually transmitted infections in those age groups. People aged between 45 and 64 had the biggest rise in syphilis, herpes, chlamydia and genital warts between 2000 and 2009. They also had the second biggest rise in gonorrhea cases, beaten only the the over 65s. An FPA spokeswoman said people in these age groups commonly made the mistake of thinking that sexual health issues would not affect them, so STIs were making a comeback in a new generation. “The oldest caller to our helpline was an 82-year-old man starting a new relationship,” she said. “Some people are coming out of relationships and dating again. Some have always been single. And many over 50s are enjoying fantastic sex and finding new love at this point in their lives.” added by: eden49
