Eminem To Perform at 2010 MTV VMAs

The VMA veteran returns to the stage with eight nominations from his best-selling Recovery. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage You can’t throw the year’s biggest party without inviting the artist with the best-selling album of 2010. Especially if that guy happens to be Eminem , whose history with the MTV Video Music Awards is long, legendary and full of the kind of eye-popping moments that make the VMAs the must-TiVo event of the year. Slim Shady will bless the show’s stage on September 12, where he is nominated for eight Moonmen for his smash comeback album Recovery, the best-selling non-country release of the year. Em joins an already star-packed roster of performers that includes Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Drake, B.o.B and Florence and the Machine, as well as in-house DJ Deadmau5 and host Chelsea Handler. The list of presenters already includes Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj, Emma Stone, Penn Badgley, Trey Songz, Ashley Greene, Selena Gomez and Ne-Yo. Over the years, Eminem has given some of the most iconic performances of the modern VMA era, none bigger than 2000’s Night of the Living Shadys. During that show, Em began his run through Video of the Year-winning hit “The Real Slim Shady” out on the streets of Manhattan, surrounded by an army of clones dressed exactly like him. The brigade then marched into Radio City Music Hall as Em finished “Shady” and then busted into a visceral “The Way I Am.” Even when he wasn’t performing on the show, Eminem — who ranks sixth on the list of all-time VMA winners — has made his presence felt over the years, as he did in 2002 with his infamous run-in with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog . Viewers can vote for general VMA categories, including Best New Artist, by visiting VMA.MTV.com . In addition, text voting for Best New Artist is open to all wireless carrier subscribers by texting BNA to 97979. Voting continues through the show, live on September 12.

Homeless Woman Killed by Police Cruiser While Sleeping in Park | End Homelessness | Change.org

A Cincinnati woman died last week after she was run over while sleeping in Washington Park. The driver? A respected police officer with a jacket full of recommendations for his work in the park system. Officer Marty Polk was on a routine daytime patrol when he ran over Joann Burton with a police cruiser. Officer Polk drove off the park service route onto the grass, running over Burton as she slept under blankets between the trees. Officer Polk stopped after he realized he'd hit something and called an ambulance when Burton began screaming, “Someone ran over my legs!” Burton later died at the hospital, leaving behind a husband, five children and several grandchildren. Burton's husband has asked why a trained police officer would drive on grass in a public park. Others wonder how someone could fail to see a person lying in a pile of blankets at noon. The Cincinnati police department has said it's not standard procedure to drive through grass, though it's “not unusual.” Officer Polk underwent standard drug and alcohol testing after the accident but the results have not yet been released and the investigation is ongoing. Officer Polk had received extensive praise from local business owners over the years. Other than a minor traffic accident (on the road, not on the grass) twenty years ago, his record was excellent and he's never had a disciplinary problem. He's been placed on paid leave during the investigation. A vigil has already been held in the park by Burton's friends and family. The Cincinnati Homeless Coalition has also hired a lawyer to represent Burton's family's interests. Adding another layer of tragedy to the story is that park residents have said Officer Polk was nice, friendly and treated them with respect. No one has suggested that Polk intentionally hit Burton or meant to harm anyone. Which makes us ask: how could an officer with a great reputation and a good relationship with the park's homeless community be so fatally unaware? added by: toyotabedzrock

B.o.B Says VMA Nominations Are ‘Very Special To Me’

‘This reflects the work I’ve put in over the years and the word of mouth I’ve helped create,’ he tells MTV News. WaPo Obit Tones Down Climate Scientist’s Recent Attack on ‘Hitlerian Lies’ and ‘Gun-Toting Rightwingers’

The Washington Post obituary for liberal climate scientist Stephen Schneider, a media favorite over the years to promote the allegedly ironclad certainty of global warming, replayed a very recent jeremiad against “Hitlerian lies” by conservatives in the wake of Climategate. But the Post’s version of his remarks toned him down and excised his attacks on “gun-toting rightwingers” who are Limbaugh and Beck fans. T. Rees Shapiro reported: His passionate views on the climate debate occasionally attracted vitriol from extremist groups. An FBI investigation recently found he was named on a neo-Nazi “death list,” and Dr. Schneider said he received hundreds of hate e-mails a day. “What do I do? Learn to shoot a magnum? Wear a bulletproof jacket?” Dr. Schneider said. “I have now had extra alarms fitted at my home, and my address is unlisted. I get scared that we’re now in a new Weimar Republic where people are prepared to listen to what amounts to Hitlerian lies about climate scientists.” Nonetheless, Dr. Schneider said he believed it was important for scientists to communicate with the public and spread their understanding of climate data and findings. “If we do not do the due diligence of letting people understand the relative credibility of claimants of truth, then all we do is have a confused public who hears claim and counterclaim,” Dr. Schneider said in a recent interview with Climate Science Watch. “When somebody says ‘I don’t believe in global warming,’ I ask, ‘Do you believe in evidence? Do you believe in a preponderance of evidence?’ ” For a fuller version of Schneider’s remarks, we turn to the leftist British newspaper The Guardian  on July 5, in which correspondent Leo Hickman warned “Climate scientists in the US say police inaction has left them defenceless in the face of a torrent of death threats and hate mail.” Schneider sounds less like a scientist and more like an activist:   Schneider described his attackers as “cowards” and said he had observed an “immediate, noticeable rise” in emails whenever climate scientists were attacked by prominent right-wing US commentators, such as Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh . “[The senders] are not courageous people,” said Schneider. “Where are they getting their information from? They just listen to assertions made on blogs and rightwing talkshows. It’s pathetic .” Schneider said the FBI had taken an interest earlier this year when his name appeared on a “death list” on a neo-Nazi website alongside other climate scientists with apparent Jewish ancestry. But, to date, no action has been taken. “The effect on me has been tremendous,” said Schneider. ” Some of these people are mentally imbalanced. They are invariably gun-toting rightwingers. What do I do? Learn to shoot a Magnum? Wear a bullet-proof jacket? I have now had extra alarms fitted at my home and my address is unlisted. I get scared that we’re now in a new Weimar republic where people are prepared to listen to what amounts to Hitlerian lies about climate scientists.” The Post obituary made no reference whatsoever to Schneider’s arguments in the 1970s that the real peril was global cooling . That apparently would have been too much of a concession to the gun-toting rightwingers.

Brangelina Will Get Married (Once the Kids Ask)!

Marriage is not happening for Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. They’ve made this abundantly clear with their comments and inaction over the years … but there’s one thing that could change their minds. Well, six things. “I think it would be hard to say no to the kids,” Angelina said this morning on Good Morning America in an excerpt of an interview airing tonight on Nightline . Not that we should hold our breath, as it ‘s not a huge priority for them, either. “They’re not asking,” Jolie says. “They are very aware that nothing’s missing.” Marriage or not, Jolie, who stars in the new spy thriller Salt, touches on other aspects of her family in the interview, including whether it will get any larger. Sounds like Brangelina is torn about the issue. OK! totally made this story up … but it could actually happen someday! “We always have this thing, first thing in the morning, where we’re really, really tired, and we look at each other and we wonder, Are we ever going to get sleep?” the Salt star says. “And yet we still love the idea of having more children.” Offering a glimpse into their daily routine, Jolie says she’s better at disciplining the girls, while Pitt is better at disciplining the boys. “I think girls and Daddy can just bat their eyes,” she says. “And the boys, funnily enough, can kind of get me.” Asked if she and Brad will grow old together, Angelina doesn’t hesitate: “Of course … We wouldn’t have six children if we weren’t absolutely sure of that.” She also describes the pandemonium of ordinary events such as breakfast: “We’re like bartenders. We’re like waiters,” she says of herself and her partner. “But we still, I think, are able to do it because we manage to have a great laugh. We do it together, and we find fun in it, and because of that, it doesn’t matter if you don’t get enough sleep. It’s an honor to take care of them.” Is she totally awesome or what?

Eminem Shouts Out Lil Wayne During Scotland Gig

‘Free Lil Wayne!’ Em shouted before launching into ‘No Love’ at T in the Park festival. By James Montgomery Eminem (file) Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images He took the stage nearly 45 minutes late — allegedly due to “laser pen fears” — but Eminem more than made up for the delay with a fiery headlining performance on Saturday at the T in the Park festival in Scotland . Em’s made just a handful of live appearances over the past year (his last U.S. gig was a headlining slot at the Voodoo Fest in New Orleans back in October), yet he didn’t show any signs of rust at T, ripping through a 29-song set that spanned his entire career. Backed by a live band, he opened with “Won’t Back Down,” his collaboration with Pink off his comeback Recovery album , then worked through tracks including “3 a.m.” (from last year’s Relapse ), “Kill You” (off The Marshall Mathers LP ) and his breakout “My Name Is” (from 1999’s Slim Shady LP ). Em shouted “Free Lil Wayne!” before launching into “No Love,” the Haddaway-sampling song that features both rappers (obviously, Weezy couldn’t make it to the show). He dedicated “Love the Way You Lie” to “everyone who’s been in a f—ed up relationship” and paid tribute to his late friend (and former D12 member) Proof , telling the Scottish crowd about the time the two had devoured “weed brownies” in Amsterdam and “started speaking in tongues.” The remaining members of D12 joined Em for a run of their hits, including “Purple Pills,” “Fight Music” and “My Band.” He also acknowledged the rainy weather that had dogged the fest throughout the weekend (“I know it’s muddy and sloppy and sh–, but this is fun,” he laughed), and then, just before wrapping his set with an anthemic take on “Lose Yourself,” he thanked the crowd — and his fans worldwide — for sticking with him through the years. “Everybody who’s an Eminem fan, I just wanna say thank you so much for the support you’ve shown over the years, for not giving up on me,” he said. “I hope you enjoyed the show as much as we did tonight. Peace.” Related Artists Eminem Lil Wayne

Media Spin Supreme Court Gun Ruling as Loss for States’ Rights

Don’t look now, but it seems the media have suddenly discovered a respect for states’ rights. All it took was a Supreme Court ruling affirming the Second Amendment’s role in protecting gun owners’ rights from state or local infringement. Newsweek  called the ruling  “bad news” for gun controllers because “the right to ‘keep and bear arms’ in the U.S. Constitution’s 2 nd  Amendment restricts state and local power to impose gun controls.” The ruling found that local and state governments cannot simply ban gun ownership. It left the door open for some restrictions, but the extent of those restrictions remains largely untested. CNN  declared the ruling  “a potentially far-reaching case over the ability of state and local governments to enforce limits on weapons.” MSNBC’s Morning Joe contributors were devastated by the court’s ruling. “Gun owners win. Gun rights win. Big cities lose. I mean, any time you make it easier for guns to be on the streets of big cities or any city, actually, we lose as citizens,” Mike Barnacle said. Richard Haass said there was a “gap” between “the theory that the Court is deciding on about a fairly broad interpretation of Second Amendment rights and the realities as mayors see it.” He bemoaned that “this is obviously going to have repercussions in every city and every state across the country.” A  recent MSNBC report , however, found that gun ownership has increased over the years while gun homicides have decreased. Moment of Truth: Oliver Stone on Gonzo Docmaking and ‘Good Guy’ Hugo Chávez

Welcome back to Moment of Truth, Movieline’s spotlight on the best in nonfiction cinema. Today we hear from director Oliver Stone about his new documentary South of the Border , which opens tomorrow in limited release. For all the political heat Oliver Stone has withstood (and will continue to withstand) over the years, no one can really call the guy a slacker. Take his latest doc South of the Border , which Stone filmed and edited during the course of making two narrative features and a 10-hour documentary he’s still working on. The concept was simple enough, even while the implications were more than a little complex: Introduce the leaders of seven Latin American countries to U.S. and European audiences who, for too long, have received the wrong idea about them from the media. Does it work? That’s up to you.
