Gates Foundation invests in Monsanto/ Both will profit at expense of small-scale African farmers

Farmers and civil society organizations around the world are outraged by the recent discovery of further connections between the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and agribusiness titan Monsanto. Last week, a financial website published the Gates Foundation’s investment portfolio, including 500,000 shares of Monsanto stock with an estimated worth of $23.1 million purchased in the second quarter of 2010 (see the filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission). This marks a substantial increase from its previous holdings, valued at just over $360,000 (see the Foundation’s 2008 990 Form). “The Foundation’s direct investment in Monsanto is problematic on two primary levels,” said Dr. Phil Bereano, University of Washington Professor Emeritus and recognized expert on genetic engineering. “First, Monsanto has a history of blatant disregard for the interests and well-being of small farmers around the world, as well as an appalling environmental track record. The strong connections to Monsanto cast serious doubt on the Foundation’s heavy funding of agricultural development in Africa and purported goal of alleviating poverty and hunger among small-scale farmers. Second, this investment represents an enormous conflict of interests.” Monsanto has already negatively impacted agriculture in African countries. For example, in South Africa in 2009, Monsanto’s genetically modified maize failed to produce kernels and hundreds of farmers were devastated. According to Mariam Mayet, environmental attorney and director of the Africa Centre for Biosafety in Johannesburg, some farmers suffered up to an 80% crop failure. While Monsanto compensated the large-scale farmers to whom it directly sold the faulty product, it gave nothing to the small-scale farmers to whom it had handed out free sachets of seeds. “When the economic power of Gates is coupled with the irresponsibility of Monsanto, the outlook for African smallholders is not very promising,” said Mayet. Monsanto’s aggressive patenting practices have also monopolized control over seed in ways that deny farmers control over their own harvest, going so far as to sue—and bankrupt—farmers for “patent infringement.” News of the Foundation’s recent Monsanto investment has confirmed the misgivings of many farmers and sustainable agriculture advocates in Africa, among them the Kenya Biodiversity Coalition, who commented, “We have long suspected that the founders of AGRA—the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation—had a long and more intimate affair with Monsanto.” Indeed, according to Travis English, researcher with AGRA Watch, “The Foundation’s ownership of Monsanto stock is emblematic of a deeper, more long-standing involvement with the corporation, particularly in Africa.” In 2008, AGRA Watch, a project of the Seattle-based organization Community Alliance for Global Justice, uncovered many linkages between the Foundation’s grantees and Monsanto. For example, some grantees (in particular about 70% of grantees in Kenya) of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA)—considered by the Foundation to be its “African face”—work directly with Monsanto on agricultural development projects. Other prominent links include high-level Foundation staff members who were once senior officials for Monsanto, such as Rob Horsch, formerly Monsanto Vice President of International Development Partnerships and current Senior Program Officer of the Gates Agricultural Development Program. Transnational corporations like Monsanto have been key collaborators with the Foundation and AGRA’s grantees in promoting the spread of industrial agriculture on the continent. This model of production relies on expensive inputs such as chemical fertilizers, genetically modified seeds, and herbicides. Though this package represents enticing market development opportunities for the private sector, many civil society organizations contend it will lead to further displacement of farmers from the land, an actual increase in hunger, and migration to already swollen cities unable to provide employment opportunities. In the words of a representative from the Kenya Biodiversity Coalition, “AGRA is poison for our farming systems and livelihoods. Under the philanthropic banner of greening agriculture, AGRA will eventually eat away what little is left of sustainable small-scale farming in Africa.” A 2008 report initiated by the World Bank and the UN, the International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD), promotes alternative solutions to the problems of hunger and poverty that emphasize their social and economic roots. The IAASTD concluded that small-scale agroecological farming is more suitable for the third world than the industrial agricultural model favored by Gates and Monsanto. In a summary of the key findings of IAASTD, the Pesticide Action Network North America (PANNA) emphasizes the report’s warning that “continued reliance on simplistic technological fixes—including transgenic crops—will not reduce persistent hunger and poverty and could exacerbate environmental problems and worsen social inequity.” Furthermore, PANNA explains, “The Assessment’s 21 key findings suggest that small-scale agroecological farming may offer one of the best means to feed the hungry while protecting the planet.” The Gates Foundation has been challenged in the past for its questionable investments; in 2007, the L.A. Times exposed the Foundation for investing in its own grantees and for its “holdings in many companies that have failed tests of social responsibility because of environmental lapses, employment discrimination, disregard for worker rights, or unethical practices.” The Times chastised the Foundation for what it called “blind-eye investing,” with at least 41% of its assets invested in “companies that countered the foundation’s charitable goals or socially-concerned philosophy.” cont. added by: JanforGore

Package bomb goes off at Houston oil executive’s home

Pipe bomb disguised as chocolates sends woman to hospital A seemingly anonymous gift left on the front porch of a Houston home owned by an oil company executive has the city's affluent population of oil profiteers on edge this weekend, after that package exploded and seriously injured a 62-year-old woman. Neighbors of the victim told an ABC News affiliate in Houston that the bomb was disguised as a box of chocolates in a gift bag, left on the home's doorstep around Thursday. Instead, it contained what authorities described as a pipe bomb carrying a load of thumb tacks and nails. When she opened the package on Friday evening, standing on her back porch around 6:30, it resulted in shrapnel embedded across the woman's face — injuries police said were not life-threatening. “It wasn't immediately clear whether the house was targeted, however, Eyewitness News found out the home is owned by an oil company executive,” the ABC affiliate further noted. Story continues below… Police refused to release the victim's name and none of the area media stated who the home belongs to or which oil company employs that individual. However, an examination of the homefront shown on local news reports correlated to images featured on Google Street View. A series of basic searches across a publicly available property database revealed the home's owner to be James Brock Moore III, president of Adams Resources Exploration Corporation (AREC). A separate name listed on the home's appraisal record, one Vennie Wolf, may or may not be the bomb's victim. The company brags on its Web site that it successfully “exploited” the “Austin chalk,” which is a geological formation that's proved tricky to drill under due to its fractured oil and gas stocks. Many companies have adopted advanced horizontal drilling techniques to conquer the chalk and penetrate even deeper into underground Texas mineral reserves. AREC says its areas of interest stretch along the Gulf coast from south Texas all the way to Alabama. No further details could be confirmed at time of this writing. Neighbors described the bomb's detonation as sounding similar to a transformer blowing out. One man, Dennis McCoy, who spoke to Houston's KHOU 11 News, claimed to have been asked by the woman if he'd left a box of candies on her doorstep. The box apparently carried a simple note saying, “Thank you.” Initial online speculation centered on whether the bombing may be a targeted hit on someone associated with embattled oil company BP, which is currently held as responsible for the worst environmental accident in humanity's history. A connection of that nature is at least not immediately apparent. Such speculation would appear to be driven only by police refusal to release the victim's name and local media's reticence to give a precise address. Local reports said that the package note also carried the woman's name, except misspelled. “I can't believe anyone would do something as terrible and tragic to a person like this lady,” Karen Gennity, a neighbor, told ABC 13. This video is from Houston's ABC 13, broadcast Saturday, July 10, 2010. http://rawstory.com/rs/2010/0711/package-bomb-houston-oil-company-executives-hom… added by: treewolf39

Guru’s BET Awards Omission Due To A ‘Technical Glitch,’ Exec Says

Stephen Hill says late Gang Starr MC will be honored during BET Hip-Hop Awards in the fall. By Mawuse Ziegbe Guru Photo: Gregg Delman The 2010 BET Awards had several memorable moments, including a diva-packed tribute to lifetime-achievement honoree Prince , a pregnant Alicia Keys rocking out harder than ever and comebacks from Kanye West , Chris Brown and El DeBarge . However, viewers have been abuzz since Sunday’s live broadcast about a moment that was noticeably absent from the show: a tribute honoring late lyricist Guru . A BET higher-up, however, has insisted that the lack of recognition for the Gang Starr MC, who succumbed to cancer earlier this year, was not an oversight but rather the product of a technical snafu. “It was nothing more than a technical glitch,” said BET Executive Vice President of Entertainment and Music Programming Stephen Hill, who was involved in staging the show, according to AllHipHop.com . Hill said the show had intended to honor other late stars but ran into issues with the tribute video. “It was the same reason you didn’t see anything about Naomi Sims, a black model who passed, and Marvin Isley of the Isley Brothers. So Guru, Naomi Sims and Marvin Isley were all tied to this one package that didn’t fire off the way it was supposed to. What was supposed to happen is you see this package and Naomi and Guru and Marvin end up on Gary Coleman. For some reason, we couldn’t get it to fire, and it kept Gary Coleman up there [as] a freeze [frame],” said Hill, referring to a moment in the show when an image of the late actor was displayed on a monitor. “That’s why it looks a little awkward when Todd [Bridges] started, because he was supposed to have a bit of a ramp-up,” Hill explained, referencing Bridges’ speech about his former “Diff’rent Strokes” co-star. “So Todd did his thing, and we continued on with [the] Lena [Horne] and Teddy Pendergrass [dedications].” Hill assured fans that Guru would be properly honored at the BET Hip-Hop Awards, which typically air in the fall. “You can best believe there will be something significant for Guru during the Hip-Hop Awards. We realized there was nothing we could do [during the BET Awards],” Hill lamented. “We had to keep it moving after that technical glitch. Guru, Naomi Sims and Marvin Isley were all victims of that technical glitch, all extremely influential in different ways.” Did you notice Guru’s omission from the BET Awards montage? Teresa Giudice: Would You Hit It?

Despite having a baby girl just over a month ago, Teresa Giudice tells the latest issue of In Touch Weekly she’s never been happier with her body. Of course, the breast enhancement surgery she underwent last year helps a great deal with that confidence. Teresa told the tabloid: “I just got them done last summer, so this is my first time wearing a bikini and I have to say, this is the happiest I have ever been with my body. I feel like I have the whole package!” What else went into this package, aside from silicone? The Real Housewives of New Jersey star dished on a number of weight-related topics: How much does she weigh? I hardly ever weigh myself, but I do fit back into most of the clothes I wore before I had Audriana. I think I’m a 27 jean size and size 4 in dresses. Does she diet? I’m never on a diet. I always eat what I want. When I was pregnant, I had to eat anything that was in front of my face. It’s an Italian thing — they say if you see something and don’t eat it, your baby will get a birthmark! What’s her favorite body part? I love my new boobies, but if I had to pick between an ass or boobs, I’d have to say my ass is more important to me. I’m proud of my bubble butt! Got all that, readers? Now, you tell us: Would you hit this?

Space Junk: A Real Problem

Every now and again someone raises a stern warning about the amount of space junk orbiting Earth. Those warnings are usually met with general indifference, as very few of us own satellites or travel regularly to low Earth orbit. But the DoD's assessment of the space junk problem finds that perhaps we should be paying attention: space junk has reached a critical tipping point that could result in a cataclysmic chain reaction that brings everyday life on Earth to a grinding halt. Our reliance on satellites goes beyond the obvious. We depend on them for television signals, the evening weather report, and to find our houses on Google Earth when we're bored at work. But behind the scenes, they also inform our warfighting capabilities, keep track of the global shipping networks that keep our economies humming, and help us get to the places we need to get to via GPS. According to the DoD's interim Space Posture Review, that could all come crashing down. Literally. Our satellites are sorely outnumbered by space debris, to the tune of 370,000 pieces of junk up there versus 1,100 satellites. That junk ranges from nuts and bolts lost during spacewalks to pieces of older satellites to whole satellites that no longer function, and it's all whipping around the Earth at a rate of about 4.8 miles per second. The fear is that with so much junk already up there, a collision is numerically probable at some point. Two large pieces of junk colliding could theoretically send thousands more potential satellite killers into orbit, and those could in turn collide with other pieces of junk or with satellites, unleashing another swarm of debris. You get the idea. To give an idea of how quickly a chain reaction could get out hand consider this: in February of last year a defunct Russian satellite collided with a communications satellite, turning 2 orbiting craft into 1,500 pieces of junk. The Chinese missile test that obliterated a satellite in 2007 spawned 100 times more than that, scattering 150,000 pieces of debris. If a chain reaction got out of control up there, it could very quickly sever our communications, our GPS system (upon which the U.S. military heavily relies), and cripple the global economy (not to mention destroy the $250 billion space services industry), and whole orbits could be rendered unusable, potentially making some places on Earth technological dead zones. added by: diode

What Is Sexy? Miranda Kerr

Here is gorgeous supermodel hottie Miranda Kerr at some Victoria’s Secret event called What Is Sexy? . I think we all know the answer to that and it’s standing right in front of us in a tiny little dress that looks like it’s made out of garbage bags. I always said this chick could wear nothing but garbage bags and she’d still be the hottest piece of ass around. She’s proved me right. I’d like to dress up as a raccoon and tear into this package. That’s not weird. more pictures of Miranda Kerr and others here
