Reacting To The Newest Episode Of Lost: "Happily Ever After"

Desmond Hume delivered one hell of a Lost episode last night. “Happily Ever After” may not have delivered the same emotional one-two punch as “The Constant,” but Desmond episodes have a tendency to arrive just as viewers are beginning to become frustrated with certain mysteries — Desmond is here to calm your fears. “Happily Ever After” accomplished that goal, providing a context and reason for the sometimes interesting, sometimes eye-rolling flash sideways sequences that have dominated half of nearly every episode of Lost ‘s final season. Thank you for your help, Desmond. Here’s what we thought of the latest episode of Lost , “Happily Ever After.” 1) So, I was mostly right: the flash-sideways sequences now have meaning, thanks to the Desmond’s revelations in “Happily Ever After.” The flash-sideways will continue to be the prevailing narrative device to accompany the present Island timeline, but from this episode forward, it seems they’ll have a very clear, very direct purpose in attempting to convince everyone from Oceanic 815 that something happened, something they did. Sounds a little bit like what Benjamin Linus was tasked with by Ms. Hawking and Jacob, doesn’t it? Both Jack and Desmond have a certain look in their eyes now, as though they’re consciously aware of the reason they’re on the Island now. We’ve been given a glimpse at what that is, but those guys are hiding someone from us. Are Jack and Desmond the new Jacob and Man in Black? 2) It’s unclear how much each side of Desmond knows. Does Desmond in the flash-sideways know everything about what’s happening on the Island, or only the existence of another timeline? In “The Constant,” Desmond’s mind was actually swapping between the two existences. He was fully in control of himself and able to bring memories of each experience back to the other timeline. We aren’t given an indication that’s happening in “Happily Ever After.” Clearly, Desmond comes back to the Island after the experiment with a newfound purpose, but is that because he experienced everything that we watched, or something else? 3) Ms. Hawking made a triumphant return to Lost and, naturally, she threw things for a loop. At this point, she’s the only one who seems to know what’s really going on. Desmond, Charlie and Jack seem to have pieces to the puzzle, while Hawking is aware of the consequences. She wants to push Desmond away from connecting with Penny. Is that because it would throw off the timeline? Do things need to happen for other things to happen? Well, clearly, but what are those things that need to happen? Surprise, surprise: we’re in the dark on these answers. Charles Widmore does not seem to be aware of what’s happening, though. Why is his wife? Joseph Baxter, Got His Blackberry Fried By Widmore’s Giant Magnet Thingy: 1) I think the creative team actually had good instincts in anticipating when viewers would get fed up with the sideways and might start to bail if they weren’t finally told why they’re watching it. Last night, the sideways was finally codified as something was relevant to the events in the original timeline on the Island. With just one revelation, the concept they devoted about 50% of the season’s screen time has finally had its existence justified. As a fan, I feel I have been assured that investing interest in this storyline was indeed worth my time and will pay off. Even the “Fugitive Kate 2.0” stuff somehow seems legitimate now. Whereas I was previously scared that taking the sideways road would only lead to a cheap Patrick Duffy in a shower, “It was all just a dream” swerve. I can confidently tackle this aspect of this show, knowing that it’s all relevant. Did I mention that I was happy with this revelation? 2) If there was such a thing as mandated quotas for out-of-context homoerotic innuendo, then I think “Happily Ever After” more than met them. Whether it’s Minkowski creepily leaning over Desmond asking, “You looking for some company?” or Daniel pulling Desmond out of his limo to ask him (a complete stranger) “Do you believe in love at first site, Mr. Hume?” It seemed no accident and Desmond reacted accordingly. You almost expected him to say “Uh, sorry brotha, ah don’t swing that way.” After the second time, you’re kind of left wondering if someone was pulling your leg. This is a small point, but the thing about Lost

The Verdict: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2: Stimulus Package

It took some time, but Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 finally has its first big chunk of DLC, the recently-released “Stimulus Package.” The timed-exclusive pack (1200 Microsoft Points, or $15) has five new maps for the game, although two are actually returning “favorites” from Call of Duty 4:

Reacting To The Newest Episode Of Lost: "The Package"

After the breakneck pace of “Ab Aeterno,” it was time for Lost to slow down a little bit. The latest episode of Lost , the Jin and Sun-centric “The Package,” brought things back down to Earth, but like a good game of chess, the pieces are all moving into places. “The Package” brought back one of the most important pieces on the Lost chess board, too, a character we’ve been patiently waiting to make a return to the Island and confuse us with more time madness. Good episodes are likely ahead. See you in another life (aka below the “read more” tag), brother. Let’s discuss “The Package.” Patrick Klepek, Still Locked Up With Walt In Room 23: 1) There’s something fishy going on with open wounds on Lost . It was mentioned at one point that the “sickness” only infects someone with an open wound. Sayid was shot, then submersed in the Temple and became “sick” after an interaction with the Man in Black. Jin’s leg was ensnared in Claire’s trap, creating a large open wound — perfect for infection, right? In last night’s episode, Man in Black tells Jin he should let the wound air out, a piece of advice that Jin doesn’t seem to keen on. And when Sun is tending to her long-deserted garden, Man in Black conveniently shows up the moment after she cuts her finger open. There’s something going on with Man in Black’s fascination with open wounds. I suspect you can’t be “infected” without one. 2) Jack Shepard is a confident man these days. The back-and-forth between him and Sun on the beach reminded me in more ways than one of conversations Jacob’s had with people he’s trying to convert. Jack spent that conversation ensuring he has Sun’s trust and confirmed that trust with a handshake. Man in Black and Jacob both tend to seek a handshake or place their hand on someone they’re looking to manipulate, leading me to believe that our boy Jack may have already become the new Jacob. That one’s a bit out there, I know, but the coincidences are starting to add up, so I’m going to throw it out there officially: Jack is the new Jacob. 3) “The Package” ended up referring to one Desmond Hume. It’s taken far too long for Desmond to return to the Island, but there’s probably a good reason for that: he’s going to really mess things up for everyone. “The rules don’t apply” to Desmond, as Faraday once told us, and that could mean interesting revelations for both Jacob and the Man in Black, since their whole Island-based game is based on a set of specific rules the two of them have to follow. If Jacob and Man in Black are two forces balancing each other out, can Desmond tip the scales? Joseph Baxter, Planning To Sue Rosetta Stone After Running Into A Tree: 1) After coming off a tour de force of answers and revelations from “Ab Aeterno,” we knew “The Package” was probably going to find the show taking a breather. Despite that, I still took the prospect of a Sun and Jin-centric episode as a strong possibility we’d actually get to see their big reunion. From our perspective, it has been two whole seasons since the sometimes-happy couple had been together, and their big moment in the spotlight this season seemed like the right time, as bigger things were certainly on the horizon. Well, no dice, but Lost is the kind of show that can fail to meet one’s expectations yet still prevail. In this case, we got a bit of a lifeline on this front, in Jin’s new status as Widmore’s prisoner/DHARMA liason. Plus, the moment where Jin got to browse Sun’s camera and see pictures of little Ji Yeon for the first time, knowing that he’s missed a part of her childhood was absolutely touching. The buildup has been successfully refreshed and at this point, I wouldn’t have it any other way. 2) It’s interesting that little Ji Yeon has been brought up. We found out last night in the sideways that Sun was pregnant. Conventional thinking might have one believe that Sun being mortally wounded (in the stomach, no less) has somehow put little Ji’s sideways existence in jeopardy. However, we know via Juliet’s “Prime World” examinations on Sun, that her daughter was conceived on the Island. The conception process is not one that has the kind of poetic leeway that would have one particular person able to be conceived in different scenarios. If my parents opted to conceive a month earlier than when I was, then it wouldn’t mean that I would be a month older. It would mean that I would not exist! Therefore, let me throw a bit of a Hail Mary out there: Ji Yeon is the “Kwon” candidate. Why? Because she was conceived on the Island and doesn’t exist in the sideways world, which could make her an anomaly who is uniquely special. I also get the feeling that the sideways world is without an “official version” of Desmond, either. His presence on sideways Oceanic 815 was not only hugely anachronistic, but he appeared to be aware of something that everyone else was not. It was almost like he was on that plane knowing that it was connected to some event, making sure that it went as planned. Very Jacob-like. 3) We’ve seen Lost utilize parallel play in the past, but in “The Package,” the concept seemed to be in overload. A few examples. Last night, as an act of his newly-solidified faith in the Island, Richard concocted a plan to destroy the Ajira 316 plane to prevent Smokey from leaving the Island. Yet, in season 3’s “The Man From Tallahassee,” Locke’s restored faith in the Island inclined him to destroy the old DHARMA submarine used by the Others to prevent Jack from leaving the Island. Deja vu much? Last night, we saw Smokey chase-down Sun while she was tending the garden, only to result in her getting knocked out. In season 2’s “The Long Con,” in a plot hatched by Sawyer, Charlie attacked Sun, knocking her out while she was tending the garden. De ja vu much? Last night, Widmore’s people ambushed Team Smokey with a barrage of stun darts. Yet, in the season 2 finale “Live Together, Die Alone,” the Others used stun darts to subdue the Lost ies after Michael’s double cross. Additionally, that two-part episode’s big shift was also a grand reappearance of, get ready for it…Desmond. 4) The infamous Paik Rolex makes its return. In this case, we learn that its sideways world destination was to be part of a pay-off by Mr. Paik to kill its carrier, Jin. Whether or not that was its intended purpose for Paik’s properly-married son-in-law doppelganger may be something we’ll never know. Ironically enough, its status as “death swag” in the sideways is almost the exact opposite as its fate in the present world, which had it being pawned-off by Michael and perhaps through some Island magic, would not allow Michael to commit suicide. 5. In the preview post for this episode, I made a joke about Jin tied up in the freezer being similar to an infamous scene in Pulp Fiction . While I don’t think I’m the first person to bring up the Tarantino comparison, it does seem the sideways is legitimately starting to become a glorified Tarantino flick. Think about it: the out-of-order narrative style, irreverence, hitmen, gangsters, freaky hostage situations, convenient tie-ins. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure that there is a purpose behind the sideways that is extremely relevant and will ultimately pay-off in the end (fingers crossed). I’m not going to break out the term “jumped the shark,” but I do feel that we’re venturing into territory that makes it difficult for the audience to get excited for the events that take place within that realm. We need something soon to let us know why we’re seeing what we’re seeing. The symbolism that the sideways events represent will only take it so far. That being said, a phenomenal idea for the season 6 DVD/Blu-ray would be a bonus, full-length movie made exclusively with mashed-up scenes from the sideways. Andrew Pfister, Who Believed “The Package” Was In His Pants: Well, I was kind of right about last night. 1) We got another awesome old character cameo in Sun and Jin’s flash-sideways. But instead of the annoying and worthless Paolo (whom I just mentioned as a joke, anyway), we got the awesome and biclyoped Mikhail. Well, he started with both eyes, anyway. I also liked the second dose of Kreepy Keamy, who definitely is the most unsettling actor I’ve ever seen on TV. 2) The “package” kept under lock-and-key was in fact Desmond, but I was wrong (so far, at least) about Penny. Widmore alluded to being kept away from her, so I suppose that means that she’s not on the sub…but how did he manage to separate the couple? What exactly happened to them after Ben’s ill-fated attack at the LA pier? 3) Sayid got a little crazier (does he care who Desmond is? He seemed to show no real reaction at the docks), and even though she didn’t really have any lines, Claire seemed like she was starting to realize just how fouled-up her immediate surroundings are. 4) I was wrong about Sun and Jin reuniting, but that brings up my biggest takeaway from last night’s episode (aside from that saucy Sun moment): this is only the second time that a flash-sideways has been left unresolved (the first being Sawyer). And again, if the flash was unresolved, the Island situation was also unresolved. Are we going to see if James catches up with con-man Sawyer and if Sun survives the gunshot wound? Is that even going to be relevant? Still too many questions surrounding the split dimensions, and when Damon Lindelof updated his Twitter with “Next week, the conversation will change,” I hope that’s what he’s referring to. 5) Sawyer: “That would be ridiculous.” Perfect.

Is Kirstie Alley’s New Weight Loss Program a Scientology Scam? [Scams]

Anti-Scientology campaign group Anonymous, and some blogs, are airing accusations that Scientologist Kirstie Alley ‘s new weight loss program, Organic Liaison , is based on quackery preached by L. Ron Hubbard, and that the company has links to the ‘church’. Alley, who is herself still not at her stated target weight of 140lbs, has been shilling for her new venture on Oprah, and it features heavily (pun intended) in her upcoming A&E reality series, Kirstie Alley’s Big Life (pun intended there too, we’re sure). Anonymous have found links between Organic Liaison LLC and Scientology — the firm’s accountant, Saul B Lipson, is a known Scientologist whose company is approved by the church and based near its headquarters in Clearwater, Florida. Along with utter quacks like Hollywood mystical doctor Soram Khalsa , the board features Michelle Seward, an active Scientologist. While this is not enough to support Anonymous’ claim that money from Organic Liaison will be channeled directly into the church, it does lend credence to the assertion that the program itself is, to some extent, based on a Scientology plan called the purification rundown . This was prescribed by L. Ron Hubbard himself, but criticized for being at best bullshit that claims to detox through vitamins, minerals, drinking vegetable oil and sitting in saunas, and at worst dangerous. As it is part of the Narconon program, that Alley has said helped her break a cocaine addiction, it is fairly safe to presume she has been through it. Organic Liaison offers to combine an organic food diet with “organic and natural diet supplements that replenish your body with essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients without the pangs of starvation or cravings you may have felt on other diet plans.” It’s certainly priced like a Scientology scam. Membership costs $10 per month, or $89 for a year, and the package of supplements, called Rescue Me, is a whopping $139 per month. One you’ve ordered the kit, it auto-ships and bills your card again every month until you stop it. The kit contains three supplements, Rescue Me (claimed detox and appetite suppresser), Release Me (claimed relaxant) and Nightingale (claimed sleep aid), featuring many cheaply-available vitamins, minerals, amino acids, herbs and aids like vitamin C, folic acid, L-Tryptophan, fiber, green tea, calcium and magnesium. The company also offers other supplements — notably Relieve Me, an anti-constipation supplement that Anonymous claim is related to Cal-Mag, a noxious-sounding dietary liquid developed by Hubbard that contains calcium, magnesium, vinegar and hot water. And that led some of those church members forced to drink it to, um, relieve themselves. The evidence, while suggestive, is by no means conclusive. What is safe to say is that thousands, millions even, of people will be over-paying for unproven herbal supplements combined with a common-sense diet. We’ll do some of our own digging into Organic Liaision, and its connection to Scientology, and see if it comes back Clear. [ Pic via A&E ]

Jackson Compound Investigated After Stun Gun Scare

Children and Family Services called in after Jermaine Jackson’s son obtains stun gun in home where Michael Jackson’s children live. By Gil Kaufman Michael Jackson Photo: Sony The Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services concluded a six-hour investigation at the Jackson family compound in Encino, California, on Tuesday after reports surfaced that one of Jermaine Jackson’s sons, Jaafar, was in possession of a stun gun in the same home where Michael Jackson’s three young children live. According to TMZ , DCFS workers first arrived on Monday night after a tip that 13-year-old Jaafar was playing with a stun gun at the home. But despite earlier reports, the lawyer for Katherine Jackson, Adam Streisand, insisted that neither of Michael’s boys, Blanket, 8, and Prince Michael, 13, were in the room with Jaafar when he was playing with the stun gun. Unnamed sources told TMZ that social workers interviewed all the children in the house, including Michael’s three kids, as well as other family members and staff, and that the plan was to return to the residence on Wednesday (March 3) for further questioning. There was reportedly some dispute about the timeline of when Jaafar obtained the stun gun. Some staffers said the teen had it for several days before a security staffer allegedly stumbled upon him playing with it and pointing it at Blanket and Prince, while Streisand said that it was in his possession for just a few minutes before being confiscated and that no other children were in harm’s way. According to a statement from Streisand , Jaafar ordered what he termed a “taser” online, and it was delivered to the compound two weeks ago. The lawyer said Jaafar opened the package alone in a bathroom and then “tested it on a piece of paper.” After Katherine and members of the security staff heard the sound, they confiscated the device. The statement claimed that Katherine removed the taser from the home, but TMZ claimed it was still there when DCFS arrived and confiscated it. “Blanket Jackson never saw or heard the stun gun,” Streisand said. “Neither did Paris Jackson. Prince saw the stun gun in the possession of security.” He added, “All of the kids are happy, healthy and wonderful and that is Mrs. Jackson’s only objective and concern.” Michael’s three children have been in the custody of their grandmother since the singer’s death in June. The manufacturer of the pocket-sized Scorpion stun gun that is reportedly at the center of the probe said it is the smallest, most powerful single-battery unit on the market, capable of delivering a 300,000-volt jolt. ‘It’s kind of bizarre and easy to find some humor in the situation now, but it was very serious,’ Jared Leto tells MTV News. By Kyle Anderson 30 Seconds To Mars’ Jared Leto Photo: MTV News A few weeks ago, 30 Seconds To Mars frontman Jared Leto hosted a screening of “Artifact,” the documentary about the band and the creation of their latest album, This Is War. But the gathering of hundreds of fans was broken up by a bomb scare , which Leto is still trying to process. “It’s kind of bizarre and easy to find some humor in the situation now, but it was very serious,” Leto told MTV News last week. “Last I heard, the LAPD was investigating and he was in jail, though I don’t know if he’s still there.” The incident in question began when the unidentified man interrupted the screening. After Leto managed to shuffle him out the door, the man’s car — which was parked outside in the middle of the street and playing extremely loud music — became a nuisance and the police were called. The resulting scene quickly unraveled. “It was such a surreal setting,” Leto said. “They shut down five blocks in every direction. They shut down the street. People weren’t allowed to walk anywhere. People were asked to leave their stores.” Ironically, the man was finally apprehended later while Leto was talking to the LAPD. “I was being interviewed by the police, and I see the guy walk right back up to me,” he said. “They were looking for him, and I said, ‘Well, that’s the guy right there.’ He walked up to the police and said something to me, and they put him in handcuffs and asked him what was in the package. That’s when he talked about explosives. It was surreal.” Despite the disruptions, the band finished the screening of the hotly anticipated film “Artifact,” which Leto said should be available for public consumption later this year. The documentary, which follows 30 Seconds to Mars during the recording of This Is War, will provide a revealing look at the band and its inner workings. “We have a lot of material from over two years of shooting. It’s something like 3,500 hours,” Leto said. The frontman said the most revealing thing in the film might involve Leto’s sense of fashion. “I think half the film I’m in my pajamas, because I didn’t leave the house very often while we were recording,” he said. “There were days we felt like we were all in the hospital together, on some sort of rehab trip.” Related Artists 30 Seconds To Mars
