Paramore’s Hayley Williams Feels ‘More Free’ Than Ever

Watch the full interview on ‘Paramore: The Last Word,’ live on MTV.com today at 4 p.m. ET. By James Montgomery Paramore’s Taylor York and Hayley Williams Photo: MTV News FRANKLIN, Tennessee — All week, we’ve been rolling out Paramore’s reactions and responses to Josh Farro’s “Exit Statement” from the band he helped found. Which is to say, up until this point, we’ve been dealing almost exclusively with the past : the events that led to Farro posting his missive on December 21 and the fallout that occurred immediately afterward. All of that ends now. Because, as you’ll see Friday (January 7) at 4 p.m. ET — when MTV News presents “Paramore: The Last Word,” a live stream on MTV.com — Paramore couldn’t wait to put the past behind them and talk about their plans for the future. You probably already know that they’re pushing ahead with a South American tour in February, with Taylor York’s brother Justin filling in on guitars and drummer-to-the-stars Josh Freese behind the kit. And, if you’ve read Hayley Williams’ tweets, you’re definitely aware that Paramore are already writing and demoing songs. But how will they replace the contributions of Josh Farro, who co-wrote the bulk of their last two albums? Well, they won’t. At least not entirely. “Well, I think, yeah, there’s been a lot of talk of that. Everyone’s like, ‘You’re taking Josh’s spot,’ ” Taylor York told MTV News. “[But] in a way, this is a business, and I think when any business downsizes, you don’t just take over someone’s title; everyone’s title changes to fit the mold. So there are some things that I am going to have to do that Josh did, some parts, but at the same time, I have no intentions of being the new Josh, taking over his parts. That’s not really what I want to do. So, yeah, I’ll be doing some lead stuff, but I love what I get to do, and I still intend on doing that.” You can hear a lot more about the band’s future plans — including releasing new songs in 2011 — during our live stream, but making music is only part of the equation. In the wake of the Farro brothers’ split, the remaining members of Paramore have also forged a new bond, which Williams said will carry them not just toward a new album, but beyond. “I guess we’re just going to do it really right this time. … It’s going to be fun to kind of just not have to think about what someone’s thinking about me,” she said. “I know that, for me personally, I’m just gonna feel, and I don’t even mean this in a negative way to Josh and Zac, but I’m definitely starting to feel a lot more free about myself, and I think maybe that’s just me growing up, but the people I have around me — Taylor and Jeremy — I feel very supported and loved, as a person, and that’s a rare thing in this world.” And she didn’t stop there, either, but you’re going to have to wait for the “Last Word” live stream to hear the rest. And speaking of that live stream, we’d love to include your voice in the show, and judging by the sheer volume of comments our stories have gotten, you have plenty to say. Paramore Say ‘Majority’ Of Brand New Eyes Is About Josh Farro

Watch the full interview on ‘Paramore: The Last Word,’ live on MTV.com Friday at 4 p.m. ET. By James Montgomery Paramore Photo: MTV News FRANKLIN, Tennessee — In his “Exit Statement” from Paramore , Josh Farro made one thing abundantly clear: There was a lot more going on behind the scenes than most fans were aware of. Of course, in their interview with MTV News — which you can see more of in Paramore: The Last Word,” a live stream on MTV.com on Friday at 4 p.m. ET — the remaining members of the band addressed most of his charges (not surprisingly, they don’t agree with most of them), but in kicking up all that dust, Farro may have unwittingly also revealed the biggest secret of all: that the majority of the songs on Paramore’s 2009 Brand New Eyes album were about him. Up until he released his statement, most fans assumed that the lyrics on songs like “Playing God” (“It has to be so lonely/ To be the only one who’s only”) and “Ignorance” (“Where’s your gavel, your jury/ What’s my offense this time?”) were Hayley Williams’ way of telling off nameless naysayers and faceless detractors. But now, it’s pretty apparent that they deal almost exclusively with her relationship with Farro — and if you’re still not sold on that point, well, she’ll tell you herself. “I would say that a large majority of those songs, yes, have to do with the relationship we had and then that we had to mend,” she said. “And it was really hard, because we were all friends, and then going through a breakup and going through any kind of tension as a band really affected all the lyrics. … There are a lot of specifics that I pulled from my experience with just feeling like my face was underneath a boot all the time. “I think the point of the album was never to point out those things, but hopefully to encourage people who feel that way,” she continued. “Because I felt so alone in that fight, that I would never want, especially another young woman, to feel that way, because I know there are a lot of girls I’ve talked to, fans, go through the same thing in relationships and families, and it just sucks to feel kind of victimized.” And she didn’t stop there, either, but you’re going to have to wait for the “Last Word” live stream to hear the rest. And speaking of that live stream, we’d love to include your voice in the show, and judging by the sheer volume of comments our stories have gotten, you have plenty to say. Paramore Confirm Farro Brothers Have Left Band

In a statement Saturday, band confirm rumors that they have parted ways with Josh and Zac Farro. By James Montgomery Jeremy Davis, Hayley Williams, Josh Farro and Zac Farro of Paramore Photo: Jason Kempin/WireImage On Saturday (December 18), Paramore announced that brothers Josh and Zac Farro were leaving the band, confirming rumors that had begun swirling earlier in the week. In a blog post on the band’s official site Paramore wrote that the Farros had actually decided to leave the group “a couple of months ago,” and that, while fans might be shocked by the news, the remaining three members — frontwoman Hayley Williams, bassist Jeremy Davis and guitarist Taylor York — weren’t. “None of us were really shocked. For the last year it hasn’t seemed as if they wanted to be around anymore,” the statement read in part. “We want Josh and Zac to do something that makes them happy and if that isn’t here with us, then we support them finding happiness elsewhere.” The Farro brothers — guitarist Josh and drummer Zac — founded Paramore with Williams and Davis in 2004 (York was made an official member of the band around the release of 2009’s Brand New Eyes album), and though the group has lost two of its core members, they pledged to continue on … with a South American tour scheduled for February and, as York told MTV News earlier this month, a new album. “We never for a second thought about leaving any of this behind. We really hope that you can be encouraged by the fact that the three of us who are still here are ready to take on another chapter of our journey together,” the statement read. “You have always been what keeps us going so why would we stop now? We want to stick by you. Knowing that we have a unified passion and a clear vision makes us feel stronger than ever.” Earlier this week, a blog post announcing the Farros departure began making the rounds. And though it was credited to the band, in their statement on Saturday, Paramore denounced it as “a fake.” “The ‘blog’ that was posted regarding everything that is going on with our band …we aren’t sure who did it or why… And we aren’t sure how they timed it this way,” their statement read. “This is the first time that we have spoken out about what’s going on and we wouldn’t have released an official statement that important through a personal blog. So, we’re sorry for any confusion and just to remain clear, this is the first time we have spoken out about this.” Paramore concluded by thanking their fans for standing by them, and promised that 2011 will be a big year for the band. Farro brothers, or not. “We have some amazing things lined up for next year starting with our tour in South America. We are still coming to you and we are excited about who we are bringing with us! The tour is still on and we can’t wait to see you all,” they wrote. “As we look back, and now as we look with excitement to the future, in all of this what truly matters are the good times. The pictures of us with our arms around each other, the long van rides, your faces while you sing along as we play. Thank you for getting us right here to this very moment. We look forward to our best times. And we hope you will go there with us.” What do you think about the Farro brothers leaving Paramore? Let us know in the comments! Bruno Mars Latest In Line Of Producers-Turned-Performers

Seven-time Grammy nominee joins short list of producer/songwriters like Kanye West, Ne-Yo and Keri Hilson to see solo success. By Gil Kaufman Bruno Mars Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ Getty Images In music, the producer and/or songwriter is usually some anonymous professional who toils away in the studio at all hours crafting the music and words that go into the mouth of the flashy star who then goes on to pick up all of the hardware at the annual awards show. But sometimes that off-the-radar studio rat has so much material that he/she gets in the studio and earns some shine time of their own. Case in point: Bruno Mars . On Wednesday, the 25-year-old Hawaiian native became a Grammy Awards darling when he racked up seven nominations for his debut album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans, as well as his work on songs by other artists, including his production and songwriting on Cee-Lo’s “F— You.”

Hayley Williams Says She’d ‘Love To See B.o.B Win’ At The Grammys

The Paramore frontwoman picked up a pair of Grammy noms, but she’s rooting for her ‘Airplanes’ collaborator. By James Montgomery, with reporting by James Lacsina Hayley Williams Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images On Wednesday night, Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams picked up a pair of Grammy nominations — a Best Pop Collaboration nod for her work with B.o.B and Eminem on “Airplanes, Part II,” and a Best Pop Performance mention for her band’s song “The Only Exception.” So, when she spoke to MTV News literally minutes after learning about her noms, the singer was understandably excited. “Oh man, it feels so good!” Williams laughed. “And I’m really proud of everything that I get to be a part of, and I love being here to represent the guys. I wish they were here.” And while her two nominations are certainly nothing to sneeze at, they sort of pale in comparison to the 10 racked up by Eminem … or the five that B.o.B got. And since Williams guested on a song with both of those artists, we had to ask her who she’ll be cheering for come Grammy night. “Well, I would love to see B.o.B win everything he got nominated for … not only is he an amazing artist and performer, but he’s such a great dude,” she said. “And we’ve been lucky to tour together and I’ve just watched him explode. He’s a massive star now, and he’s still the same guy. So I love seeing my friends win, and I’m always going to be there rooting for him.” Of course, Williams may have an ulterior motive for throwing her support behind B.o.B — after all, he did promise MTV News that if he takes home an award, he will record a song with Paramore . “Oh yeah, well I think we just entered into a verbal contract about it right here,” Williams said, smiling. “We’ll definitely do it … I love music, I love working with other artists, as long as I feel it’s true to me as well. I wouldn’t have done ‘Airplanes’ if I listened to it and thought, ‘Uh, I don’t really care.’ But I heard it and I heard something really special, and I related to it.” And just what would a Paramore/B.o.B collabo sound like? “You’d be surprised,” Williams said. “Have you heard his new mixtape yet? Just listen to that and then tell me what you think it’s gonna sound like. It’s gonna be so sick.” The 53rd annual Grammy Awards will air Sunday, February 13, on CBS at 8 p.m. ET/PT. B.o.B, Hayley Williams ‘Finally’ Meet At VMA Rehearsal

‘Airplanes’ collaborators scored a top-five hit without ever meeting. A rehearsal for their 2010 MTV Video Music Awards performance Saturday (September 11) finally united the pair, who recorded their vocals separately and shot a video for the song at different times.

B.o.B Promises ‘Spectacular’ VMA Performance With Hayley Williams

‘I’m gonna attempt to levitate,’ the ‘Airplanes’ MC jokes about first-ever set with Paramore collaborator on Sunday. By Jayson Rodriguez B.o.B Photo: MTV News The clock is counting down to Sunday’s VMAs, and for Video of the Year nominees B.o.B and Hayley Williams it means finally meeting for the first time. The two collaborated on the rapper’s top-five hit “Airplanes” but have never met — they recorded the song and shot their parts for the video separately. They’re set to meet Saturday afternoon (September 11) in Los Angeles when they rehearse for their performance at the 2010 Video Music Awards. “I think just the fact that me and her are performing on the stage at the same [event] is gonna be spectacular,” B.o.B told MTV News on Friday about anticipation for his appearance with the Paramore singer. B.o.B is also set to perform with Bruno Mars, bringing their #1 collaboration “Nothin’ on You” to the Nokia Theatre. And the combination performance, comprised of the two smash collabos, is among the most-anticipated. The Atlanta lyricist is excited about his prime-time performance and said he was thinking about a new wrinkle for his set. “I’m gonna attempt to levitate,” he joked. “I don’t know if the dynamics of the room will allow me to do that, ’cause it requires me to really pull from the sky.” B.o.B is one of the most-nominated artists at the VMAs, scoring nods for Best Male Video and Best Hip-Hop Video, among others. He actually found out about the recognition via Twitter. “I was just on Twitter checking to see what’s up, and then I saw I got nominated, and I was like, ‘All right, don’t mind if I do.’ ” he shared with us last month. The potential big haul left the melodic MC feeling special. “It’s very special to me,” B.o.B said. “I think it’s a lot more special than the success of the singles, because this reflects the work I’ve put in over the years and the word of mouth I’ve helped create. It’s definitely amazing. I’m trying to find the words to explain it, but I can’t. It’s inexplicable. I’m a real simple man, so, you know, I accept every gift with generosity and gratitude.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday. Hayley Williams ‘Stoked’ To Shoot B.o.B’s ‘Airplanes’ Video

‘I think it’ll be a lot easier than a Paramore shoot but different and challenging in a new way,’ she tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Paramore’s Hayley Williams Photo: MTV News EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey — B.o.B ‘s “Nothin’ on You” currently sits atop the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, and “Airplanes” — the second single from his The Adventures of Bobby Ray album — has just leapt into the top 10. The Atlanta MC, who already has a video for “Nothin’,” just shot a clip for his sophomore single, albeit one that’s missing a key component: Paramore ‘s Hayley Williams, who sings the track’s hook. But all that is going to change — and soon. When we spoke to Williams at this weekend’s Bamboozle music festival, the singer said she had already carved out time to shoot her portion of the “Airplanes” video, even if she didn’t quite know what she had signed up for. “Hopefully, right after this tour [ Paramore’s spring run with Relient-K and Fun], I’ll get to do my part of the B.o.B video,” she said. “I’m stoked, because I’ve seen a couple of treatments, and I don’t know exactly what I’m getting into yet, but I’m stoked about it, because I know it’ll be different, and I think it’ll be a lot easier than a Paramore shoot but different and challenging in a new way. It’ll definitely be shorter than a Paramore video; no 12-hour day on a chorus.” So what will Williams — who, to be honest, isn’t the first person you’d think would be popping up in a hip-hop video — be doing in “Airplanes”? Good question. Paramore bassist Jeremy Davis joked that “she’s gonna be on a boat with a swimsuit and a martini.” But Williams said she’ll be taking inspiration from some of the classics. Sort of. “Growing up, I saw a lot of hip-hop videos. I always liked TLC, and I always liked Aaliyah videos, I thought they were great. Missy Elliott videos were amazing. But obviously, I’m not going to get in front of a camera and pretend to be Aaliyah or Missy Elliott. I mean, I’m still Hayley from Paramore,” she laughed. “And that’s what I think is great about it; I’m bringing a different side to what B.o.B is doing … and I think what we do as a band actually fits in some weird way. I was looking at videos of him online, at his shows, and his crowd doesn’t look too far off from, like, the kind of people we play to; same age. It seems like a good match, and I’m excited to bring whatever I have to offer to the table for him.” And since she’ll be filming her portion of the video without B.o.B, it will keep one aspect of their collaboration intact: the fact that they’ve never actually met face-to-face. “We’ve never met in person,” Williams said. “We’ve talked on Twitter, and he’s really cool. We’ll never meet. We’re going to perform the song live via Skype.” What classic hip-hop videos would you like to see Hayley inspired by? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Paramore B.o.B
