Angelina Jolie’s Bosnian War Film Producer Brushes Off Controversy

Producing partner Graham King also tells MTV News that when he visited the set, first-time director Jolie had ‘total command of that crew.’ By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Angelina Jolie Photo: Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images Last week, Angelina Jolie hit back against criticism of her still-untitled Bosnian War drama, which has been the focus of complaints by a women’s group, by simply saying, “There’s one person who has a gripe.” Jolie’s producing partner on the film, Graham King, echoed that sentiment when he told MTV News recently that the criticism has received too much attention. “Yeah, a little bit,” he said, laughing. At issue has been a rumored plot line said to involve a rape victim falling in love with her captor. A rep for Jolie has already said there is no such story line, though the full plot remains shrouded in mystery. “There are many twists in the plot that address the sensitive nature of the relationship between the main characters, and that will be revealed once the film is released,” Jolie said . Nonetheless, the controversy has persisted, with Bakira Hasecic, the president of the Association of Women Victims of War, filing a complaint about the movie with the United Nations refugee agency. When we sat down with King in Paris, where he was promoting “The Tourist” (another project of his in which Jolie stars), the producer was not only quick to dismiss the criticism but also to speak highly of Jolie’s work on her directorial debut. “I went to that set two weeks ago, and she had total command of that crew,” he said. “It was just a real joy to see her behind that monitor, and I think it’s going to be a really good piece of material.” Whether Brad Pitt will play a part remains to be seen. Recent reports have suggested Jolie’s husband will pop up in a cameo. All Jolie would tell us in Paris was “Possibly,” and King was similarly cagey: “We’ll see,” he said. ‘The Tourist’: The Reviews Are In!

Not all critics were won over by Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp’s star power. By Eric Ditzian Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp in “The Tourist” Photo: Sony Pictures Critics may not be fawning over “The Tourist,” but Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie remain big box-office draws, perhaps even more so internationally than here in the States. So while oodles of critics continue to take shots at the new flick, it’s likely to attract a sizeable audience. But will “The Tourist” top the $20 million mark? Will it fall short? Is the movie the right choice for you this weekend, as it faces other new entrants like “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” or the platform release “The Fighter”? Check out what the critics are saying and decide for yourself. The Story “One morning in Paris (France, we’re helpfully informed), the exquisite Elise Ward (Jolie) strolls down to her favorite cafe and receives a letter from her lover, Alexander Pearce, whom we eventually learn is an elusive, high-class thief wanted for stealing $744 million. Her actions are closely monitored by a team of Scotland Yard detectives led by Inspector Acheson (Paul Bettany, high-strung), whose determination to collar Pearce borders on obsession. Following Pearce’s exact instructions, Elise hops a Venice-bound train, where she subtly puts the moves on Frank Tupelo (Depp), a random, slightly rumpled American traveler whose provenance (‘a math teacher from Wisconsin’) is the script’s idea of a joke worth repeating. Employing an arsenal of suggestive glances and coy one-liners, Elise contrives to throw the cops off the scent by making them think Frank is Pearce.” — Justin Chang, Variety The Elegant Details ” ‘The Tourist’ is one of those movies that will leave some viewers scratching their heads, wondering why there isn’t more action, more snazzy editing, more obvious crackle between its stars, Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. But I suspect the people who get ‘The Tourist’ will simply adore it: It’s the kind of espionage caper that doesn’t get made anymore, a visually sensuous picture made with tender attention to detail and an elegant, understated sense of humor. In style and construction, its spiritual godfather is Stanley Donen’s ‘Charade’; thematically, its fairy godmother is Preston Sturges’ ‘The Lady Eve.’ If it were a drink, it would be a Bellini, fizzy and sweet and dry all at the same time.” — Stephanie Zacharek, Movieline The Romantic Drama ” ‘The Tourist’ nearly works as a slow-paced, romantic drama. Unfortunately this isn’t a slow-paced, romantic drama; it’s supposed to be some kind of action-thriller. But the script is as light on action as it is on thrills and director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s movie crawls by at a snail’s pace, relying on star chemistry and beautiful backdrops to keep you interested in all the moments when nothing of any real consequence seems to be happening. While it’s true that there’s pleasure to be had in watching Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie motoring endlessly through the watery, stunning streets of Venice, there’s barely enough here to justify making it a movie.” — Josh Tyler, Cinema Blend The Dissenters “Star power can cover up a multitude of shortcomings in a film. Turns out stupidity isn’t one of them. Nor is a lack of chemistry when those stars are tossed into the same orbit. Throw in the feeling that they aren’t really trying, but instead showed up for the mondo payday and the first-rate locations and you have … well, you have ‘The Tourist,’ with Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, a movie that is difficult to characterize as a disappointment because mediocrity seems to be what they were shooting for.” — Bill Goodyknoontz, The Arizona Republic The Final Word “It’s probably best to head into ‘The Tourist’ with the mindset that you’re going on an actual vacation yourself. If you’re in the mood for mindless, escapist fun — dazzling scenery, elegant evenings, decadent hotel suites and expensive clothes — you’ll be fine. There are all the obligatory chases and shootouts you’d expect in a romantic action caper, but you never get the sense that anyone’s in real danger. There are twists, but they won’t make you think too terribly hard, and in the end you will have devoted fewer than two hours of your life to a decent diversion.” — Christy Lemire, The Associated Press Check out everything we’ve got on “The Tourist.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Diddy-Dirty Money ‘Sorry’ For Delaying The Last Train

‘To be honest, we weren’t ready,’ Diddy tells MTV News of December 14 LP. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Ricky Louis Diddy-Dirty Money Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images The train is almost here! After a series of delays, Diddy-Dirty Money are finally set to release their album Last Train to Paris on December 14. The Bad Boy Records CEO apologized for the number of setbacks, but said the project is finally ready. The album’s various release dates go as far back as September 2009, but the mogul says there was a reason for the changes. “The wait is over,” Diddy told MTV News. “We pushed our album back a bunch of times because we felt, to be honest, we weren’t ready. I think a lot of times artists make that mistake. They get locked into a date and they’re like, ‘Well, I told everybody my date was this.’ “And it’s not fair to change your date four times like we did,” he continued. “We’re sorry. But at the same time, we had to get to know each other better. We had more work to do to jell. We had to do different things on the album to make it more balanced and really finish the story the right way, not the selfish way. We feel comfortable now that we’re telling the story in the way it’s supposed to be told.” Currently, Diddy and company are enjoying success with two tracks, the Drake-assisted “Loving You No More” and “Coming Home,” which the group performed over the weekend on “Saturday Night Live.” Formerly of Danity Kane, Dirty Money singer Dawn Richard talked about the long-delayed project that includes a range of stars from Justin Timberlake and Lil Wayne to Chris Brown.

Diddy And Robert DeNiro Flirt On ‘Saturday Night Live’

Bad Boy mogul hits on the screen legend dressed in drag for a skit, and takes over stage with Swizz Beatz and Diddy-Dirty Money. By Mawuse Ziegbe Robert De Niro and Sean “Diddy” Combs perform on “SNL” Dec. 4 Photo: NBC Hip-hop and Hollywood went head-to-head on this week’s episode of “Saturday Night Live.” Screen great Robert DeNiro served as host and Diddy-Dirty Money supplied the musical entertainment, but one of the highlights of the episode went down the music mogul and movie legend teamed up for some laughs. The two appeared together in a skit in where Diddy — playing an over-amped music executive – touts the talents of the “Hottest Hook Guy” in the business: Blizzard Man. Andy Samberg enters a recording studio in full early ’90s regalia – colored shades, silky shirt, sprayed-stiff hair – and drops a few wiggity wack rhymes to the horror of the other producers. Then Blizzard’s mom, played by DeNiro, sashays in, suited up in a gaudy sweater and leggings outfit that catches the eye of a (presumably) delusional Diddy. “You know a bitch gotta stay dipped,” the Hollywood great says. After sizing her up later on, the Last Train to Paris rapper tells DeNiro’s alter ego that, “If you wasn’t my man’s mom, I’d tear that ass up.” For the most part, DeNiro side-stepped the loopy costumes, and played himself when stopped by fictional BET talk show “What’s Up with That?” alongside Robin Williams and Kenan Thompson as Deandre Cole for a special Hollywood-themed episode. But the screen legend messes with Cole’s habit of interrupting guests and simply stops speaking. DeNiro stares grumpily at Cole until the groove kicks in, the host bops his head and he croons “uncomfortable silence.” DeNiro also turns up as a grizzled barfly who Samberg and Jason Sudeikis have to bed in a nearby closet in order to get a drink. All three complain that the experience is horrible because they each find each other butt-ugly. It’s later revealed that real mood-killer is the presence of DeNiro’s pal, another white-haired old timer in a bathrobe played by Ben Stiller. The show inserts a hefty amount of promotion for DeNiro’s new flick “Little Fockers,” including staging a set visit from a super-excited kid who freaks out about everything — from checking out a schedule to meeting the craft-services guy — except DeNiro. When Stiller arrives, the kid praises him for his turn in “Permanent Midnight,” and glares at DeNiro, “That’s how you do drama.” The Italian-American icon also hits up an Italian talk show that pushes him to skip down memory lane. The show trots out the deer from the 1978 flick “Deerhunter” and even forces him to do an unenthused DeNiro impression. The host also gets DeNiro to unwittingly utter his singular “Taxi Driver” line, “Are you talking to me?” by speaking in the opposite direction. For most of the show, Diddy stuck to what he’s known for, performing twice with the Dirty Money ladies, Dawn Richard and Kalenna. The trio hits the stage first with “Coming Home” shrouded in dark shadows that reflect the song’s plaintive vibe. While both ladies rock stylized pompadours and chunky statement jewelry, Richard shows off her abs in a slick bra-top and Kalenna wears a snug jumpsuit. Backed by a full band and a string section, Diddy helmed the performance, spitting the lyrics in a dark jacket and declaring passionately “It feels so good” to be coming home. The crew switched up the vibe from soulful to sexy for the second performance. Swizz Beatz kicked off the trio’s rendition of “Ass on the Floor,” imploring to the audience to “Get your hands in the air!” Richard and Kalenna took center stage and vamped it up under bright red lights, working feathered capes which Dawn affixed to her bustier and Kalenna to the small of her waist. Diddy hung back stealthily by the side of the stage surrounded by a few dancers in blonde bobs and slinky outfits. The mogul later hops up to lend a hand with hypeman duties, and the bobbed women join him as unleashes his verse, posing aggressively as he spit. What did you think of this week’s episode of “Saturday Night Live”? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Diddy-Dirty Money

Angelina Jolie Hits Backs Against Bosnian War Movie Criticism

‘There’s one person who has a gripe,’ actress says of war victim’s complaint. By Eric Ditzian Angelina Jolie Photo: Toni Passig/ WireImage After initially seeking to ease tensions with a Bosnian women’s group that has raised concerns over Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut , the actress has now spoken out against the group’s leader and called her worries out of touch with mainstream opinion. The Women Victims of War and its leader, Bakira Hasecic, have been speaking out against Jolie’s untitled film — and a purported storyline in which a rape victim falls in love with her captor on the eve of the 1992 war — leading this week to Hasecic’s declaration that she intended to file a complaint with the United Nations refugee agency. Speaking with Reuters in Paris, Jolie hit back against the criticism. “There’s one person who has a gripe,” Jolie said. “The absolute majority of the people, population, the cast, prime minister, president have been extremely supportive,” she explained, adding that the vast majority of the film’s crew had lived through the war, which lasted from 1992 to 1995. In October, Jolie struck a much more conciliatory tone regarding Women Victims of War’s concerns, saying in a statement, “My hope is that people will hold judgment until they have seen the film.” But after Hasecic’s group filed a complaint with the UN, for which Jolie is a goodwill ambassador, the actress-turned-director has become more pointed in defending herself. Previously, a rep for Jolie denied the movie contained any plotline about a rape victim falling in love with her rapist. In her October statement, Jolie said, “There are many twists in the plot that address the sensitive nature of the relationship between the main characters, and that will be revealed once the film is released.” Jolie told Reuters she initially planned to pen a screenplay focusing on the often delayed international response to international conflicts, but that her research led her to focus on the former Yugoslavia. “It kept leaning toward Yugoslavia at the time, I wanted to learn more about it and the people, the more I read and learnt, I was drawn to that part of the world,” she explained. “I met artists from that part of the world and found they were extraordinary for what they’d gone through, so I wanted to give them a platform.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

John Travolta, Kelly Preston Welcome Baby Boy

Son Benjamin was born on Tuesday night in Florida. By Gil Kaufman John Travolta and Kelly Preston Photo: Getty Images John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston have plenty to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. The couple welcomed their son, Benjamin, on Tuesday night at a hospital in Florida. A spokesperson for the actors confirmed the news to E! Online in a statement. “John, Kelly and their daughter Ella Bleu are ecstatic and very happy about the newest member of the family,” read the statement. “Both mother and baby are healthy and doing beautifully.” The baby weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces. The superstar duo announced in May that Preston, 48, was pregnant with their third child together a little more than a year after 16-year-old autistic son Jett died of a seizure in January 2009 while the family was on vacation in the Bahamas. Preston recently told People magazine that the family was in serious preparation mode as her due date approached. “I’ve been cleaning out everything in the house,” Preston said in September. “Ella has been helping too. She’s looking forward to being a big sister.” Travolta has been taking a hiatus from acting in the wake of the news about the baby and has kept his schedule light, appearing as the bald-headed baddie Charlie Wax in the little-seen thriller “From Paris with Love” alongside Jonathan Rhys Meyers earlier this year. At press time it did not appear that Travolta had any other roles in the can or on his upcoming schedule.
