Meryl Streep Wins Best Actress For ‘The Iron Lady’

Legendary actress wins third Oscar in upset victory over front-runner Viola Davis By John Mitchell Meryl Streep wins at the 84th annual Academy Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images In a surprise that clearly shocked even her, acting legend Meryl Streep won the Best Actress Academy Award on Sunday (February 26) for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady.” It’s Streep’s third Oscar; she won in 1979 for her supporting turn in “Kramer vs. Kramer” and for Best Actress in 1983 for “Sophie’s Choice.” Her nomination for “The Iron Lady” was her 17th, the most of any actor in film history. She’s received 13 nominations in the 29 years since her last win. “When they called my name, I had this feeling I could hear half of America going, ‘Oh no, come on. Her? Again?’ But, whatever,” Streep joked from the podium. In the lead-up to the awards, the race seemed to be a two-way contest between Golden Globe winner Streep and Davis, who took home the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actress. But Davis was easily the front-runner. Her film, “The Help,” was by far the most successful of all the films nominated in the Best Actress category, and she was the only contender whose film was also nominated for Best Picture. Streep even embraced her former co-star Davis on her way to the podium. The two were both nominated — Streep for Best Actress and Davis for Supporting Actress — for their turns in 2008’s “Doubt.” “First, I’m going to thank Don, because when you thank your husband at the end of the speech, they play him out with the music, and I want him to know that everything I value most in our lives, you’ve given me,” a teary-eyed Streep said. She also lavished praise on longtime friend and makeup artist Roy Helland, whom she worked with on her very first play when she moved to New York City to be an actress in the 1970s. They first worked together on the big screen in “Sophie’s Choice” and have since collaborated on “every single movie in between.” Helland scored his first Oscar for his work on “The Iron Lady.” Colin Firth, last year’s Best Actor winner for “The King’s Speech” and Streep’s co-star in the box-office hit “Mama Mia!,” presented the actress with the award. The actress dedicated much of her speech to her many colleagues in the room. “I really understand I’ll never be up here again,” Streep said. “I really want to thank all my colleagues, all my friends. I look out here and, you know, I see my life before my eyes. My old friends, my new friends. And really, this is such a great honor, but the thing that counts the most with me is the friendships and the love and the sheer joy we have shared making movies together, my friends. Thank you, all of you, departed and here, for this inexplicably wonderful career.” The MTV Movies team has the 2012 Oscars covered! Oscars 2012: ‘The Artist’ Wins Best Picture

Ode to silent film took home five trophies, tying Martin Scorsese’s ‘Hugo’ for an awards-show best. By Kevin P. Sullivan “The Artist” wins Best Picture at the 84th annual Academy Awards Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images After leading the Best Picture field in the months before Sunday’s (February 26) Oscars ceremony, “The Artist” took home the top prize. The film won five awards in total, tying “Hugo” for the most awards for a single film at this year’s Academy Awards. In a year filled with films that looked back fondly at the magic of going to the movies, no movie dominated the awards-show conversation quite like “The Artist.” The odds-on favorite to win Best Picture, “The Artist” performed just as well as many expected it would on Oscar night. The ode to silent film was considered the heavy favorite to win several of the major categories at the Academy Awards and took home Oscars for Best Actor (Jean Dujardin) and Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius). Hazanavicius’ win for Best Director signaled a turn in the tide for the night, which had been dominated by Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo” in the technical categories. “The Artist” also collected a good number of trophies earlier in the show, for Best Score and Best Costume Design, in addition to its top prize. It went toe-to-toe with “Hugo,” which also took home five total awards. The star playing a star, Jean Dujardin, won for Best Actor and signaled that the night belonged to “The Artist.” Though Alexander Payne’s “The Descendants” had gained an early lead as a potential Best Picture winner, strong showings at film festivals and earlier awards shows locked “The Artist” firmly as the front-runner for the category. Few Oscar analysts expected any other movie but the silent film to take the category. The MTV Movies team has the 2012 Oscars covered! Race Really Does Matter: Time Magazine “Mistakenly” Puts An Asian On Their Cover… About LATINO Voters!

At least it’s not Jeremy Lin SMH Oh, how awkward. Not only did Time put an Asian guy on the cover of their “Yo Decido” cover about Latino voters, but the Asian guy in question is actually a member of the press. OC Weekly ‘s Michelle Woo reports: A friend of mine, Michael Schennum, is the short-haired gentleman in the top row, center, behind the letter “M.” He is half Chinese and half white. Not Latino. Not even a little bit. Not even one of those Chinese-Mexicans from Mexicali that OC’s own Robert Chao Romero likes to write about. At least as far as Schennum knows. Schennum, who is a staff photographer for The Arizona Republic, wrote on his Facebook page, “They never told me what it was for or [asked] if I was Latino.” A Time spokesperson sent OC Weekly this response. Over the course of three days TIME photographed 151 people for the current cover. We took steps to ensure that everyone self-identified as Latino, that they are registered voters and that they would be willing to answer our questions. If there was a misunderstanding with one of our subjects, we apologize. Hey Time, if you’re going to do a story talking about “Latino” voters, where race has become the headline and focal point of the article than do it right! Ok? Time More On Bossip! Smackdown! ChitChatter: Evelyn Lozada Talks Basketball Wives Season 4, Her Issues With Jennifer Williams, And A Unexpected Surprise From Shaunie O’Neal…

The Boricua bride-to-be busts loose some inside info on the new season of our favorite fawkery program. Via RadarOnline The Basketball Wives are back with a vengeance for a new season, and RadarOnline.com caught up with the hottest star of the show, Evelyn Lozada to get the dish on the drama, the wild women, and her famous NFL-playing fiancé. “I am happy to be with some of the ladies, I’ll say that!” Lozada told RadarOnline.com in an exclusive interview. “I am really good friends with Shaunie O’Neal, we were friends before the show, and Tami Roman.” But as any fan of the VH1 hit is well aware, there is no love lost between Evelyn and Jennifer Williams, who started season four of the show with a bang when they got into an angry cat fight in the premiere episode. “As of now, me and Jennifer are not friends and I don’t think I will ever reconcile the friendship,” the outspoken 36-year-old New Yorker told RadarOnline.com bluntly. “In the first episode they talked about her being ‘bougie,’ when you are that person and you get a little bit of fame, you start believing the hype. She thinks she is better than everyone else.” Damn, tell ‘em how you really feel Ev. After knocking a couple inches of Jen’s stilletos, the isht-talkin’ Boricua took aim at new-booty Kenya Bell “Most of the cast members feel she’s a little strange to say the least. She’s not really someone I would hang out with after filming, she’s not my type of person.” “I think her fakeness could definitely be Kenya’s demise.” Despite her feelings about Kenya, there is one new cast member that she is quite fond of… “Kesha always remained herself and didn’t change, she wasn’t trying to do anything to make her mark on the show, but with Kenya she is not being herself and tries really hard to fit in. “When you come into a fourth season, you smell B.S. from far away. It’s best to be yourself, that’s why I took a liking to Kesha. She is a really sweet girl and always seems like she is the same person on and off of the set.” Surprisingly, Evelyn says that despite her usually calm demeanor, Shaunie O’Neal lets it be known that she is NOT one to f@#k around with this season. “Shaunie actually gets into a conflict with one the cast mates, she’s usually quiet and stays out of the mess. She did have an issue with one of the ladies on the show, and I think viewers will be surprised that she voiced that and who that person ended up being.” Shaunie must have gotten the message that she needs to stop being a bystander and talk a lil’ isht her damn self. Should be VERY interesting. More On Bossip! Smackdown! The Chris Brown/CM Punk Feud Is Getting Pretty Intense! “I Will Choke You” And Breezy Responds!
