‘Mission: Impossible’ Still #1 In 2012

‘Ghost Protocol,’ the fourth ‘M:I’ movie, made $134 million in 17 days. By Ryan J. Downey Tom Cruise in “Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol” Photo: Paramount Pictures Tom Cruise’s domination of the holidays continued as “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” remained the #1 movie at the box office, taking in $31.3 million over the New Year’s weekend. The fourth entry in the action franchise has made an estimated $134 million in just 17 days, which is about what “Mission: Impossible III” made during its entire theatrical run. “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” was the runner-up in the box office race, collecting $22.1 million during its second weekend in theaters for $132.1 million total. Robert Downey Jr.’s second outing as the famous detective of classic literature carried an estimated production budget of $90 million. “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked,” the third movie in the series, came in third on the New Year’s box office scorecard. “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked” jumped 45 percent from last weekend with $18.3 million for a $94.6 million total, which is about $45 million behind where the first “Alvin and the Chipmunks” stood at the same point in its run. Steven Spielberg’s “War Horse” was in a close race for the #4 spot with David Fincher’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” “War Horse” took in an estimated $16.4 million (for a $42.9 million total) while “Dragon Tattoo” earned another $16.8 million, which was a 16 percent increase from the weekend before. The first American adaptation of the popular Swedish novel has made a total of $57.1 million. Filmmaker Cameron Crowe’s “We Bought a Zoo” was #5 with $14.3 million for a $41.8 million total. Garry Marshall’s critically reviled ensemble rom-com “New Year’s Eve” doubled its previous weekend, thanks no doubt to the arrival of the holiday for which it’s named. The follow-up to “Valentine’s Day” has made just $46.4 million since its release, however, and 93 percent of film critics panned the flick, according to film review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. Looking back at the 2011 box office, the final “Harry Potter” film was #1 overall with its $381 million gross. “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” was just behind with $352.3 million. Rounding out the top five were “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1” ($275.4 million), “The Hangover Part II” ($254.4 million) and “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” ($241 million). Ron Paul Energizing First-Time Caucusers In Iowa

“He’s one of the only honest politicians left,” one voter says of Dr. Paul. By Gil Kaufman, with reporting by Andrew Jenks Ron Paul meets with supporters in Iowa Photo: Justin Sullivan/Getty Images DES MOINES, IOWA — There’s a very good reason that long-serving Texas Congressman and Tea Party Godfather Ron Paul has rocketed up the ranks in this crucial early caucus state: passion. Specifically, the kind of wide-eyed enthusiasm and dedication he inspires in young first-time caucusers like Carl Bisenius and his friends. “I’ve made my decision and I’m going to vote for Ron Paul,” said Bisenius, 19, of neighboring Ankeny, Iowa. “Mostly because he seems the most honest. He’s got the best record out of all of them and I really agree with everything he says.” Bisenius said he’s been absorbing as much information as he can about the Republicans vying for the nomination while volunteering at a Paul call center in his hometown and he’s convinced that the libertarian fire starter is the one who can beat President Obama. “A lot of people are sick of politicians lying all the time, and he’s one of the only honest politicians left,” said Bisenius. As he huddled around a table on Sunday night at Mullet’s, a beer and burgers joint in the shadow of the state capitol in downtown Des Moines, Bisenius’ confidence was bolstered by some cold, hard facts from friend Jay Fieser, 20, of Iowa City. A political science major the University of Iowa, Fieser said he paid “a bit” of attention to the 2008 election in which Paul also ran and has since learned enough about early 20th century foreign policy that he believes Rep. Paul is the man for the job. “I think it would be interesting to see the United States going back to some kind of policies like that … ending the policing of the world,” said Fieser about Paul’s isolationist arguments. As he spoke, an endless barrage of commercials from candidates Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry flashed by on the bar’s flat screen TVs as the top candidates made a final, furious push to woo Hawkeye State voters. “His foreign policy is what really drew me to him … I don’t like the two-party system here and he doesn’t seem heavily invested in the Republican Party and they don’t seem to like him that much. People are saying if he gets elected there will be a reshuffling of the parties and I’d like to see that.” Paul has drawn attention for a number of his beliefs, inlcuding not intervening in international conflicts, voting against the Iraq war, withdrawing from the United Nations, rejecting amnesty for illegal aliens and eliminating such federal government agencies as the Departments of Education, Energy, Commerce and IRS. And, in some ways, Fieser said it is precisely because the rank-and-file of the GOP and the mainstream media have ignored or ridiculed Dr. Paul that he is so interested in the former obstetrician’s views. “People are kind of sick of what’s been going on in Washington for so long … I think they’re really staring to look at Ron Paul because of that,” he said. It is one of Paul’s more radical ideas — returning the U.S. to the gold standard — that caught the eye of first-time caucuser Daniel Swenson, 18. “He seems to be the really only candidate that his voting record reflects his policies and principles he stands for. That’s what really draws me to him,” he said, citing Paul’s claims that returning to the standard the country abandoned in 1933 in order to emerge from the Great Depression could help turn around our current economic crisis. Like his friends, Danielson said he planned to do his part in the days leading up to Tuesday’s vote by talking to his family and other undecided voters about Paul’s policies and trying to sway them to cast a vote for the second-time presidential candidate. In Iowa Caucus, Young Voters Could Be Crucial

First electoral event of the year takes place Tuesday, and MTV is on the scene. By Gil Kaufman Ron Paul campaigns in Iowa Photo: Justin Sullivan/Getty Images When it comes to presidential politics, Iowa is #1 in line, no matter what. Though it only serves up around 1 percent of the national delegates in presidential contests, pundits and political junkies have looked to the Hawkeye State for more than 40 years for an early indication of who will represent the party in the race for the White House. With President Obama facing no Democratic challenger in his bid for a second term, all the attention at Tuesday’s Iowa caucus will be focused on the Republicans vying to come out on top in Iowa: Ron Paul, Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Michele Bachmann, Rick Santorum, Rick Perry and Jon Huntsman. As of press time, libertarian rabble-rouser Paul was in the lead, in part due to his dedicated core of young supporters. Frequently ignored by the national media, Paul is an enigma in this year’s GOP field thanks to his views on legalizing drugs and abolishing the departments of Education and Commerce, among others. But according to the latest Public Policy Poll , Paul was leading the pack at 23 percent, followed by Romney at 20 and the fast-fading Gingrich at 14. Not surprisingly, Texas congressman Paul is well ahead with voters under the age of 45, with 33 percent of their likely votes compared to Romney’s 16. But the Huffington Post reported that what remains to be seen is whether those hard-partying college students intent on casting their votes for Paul will show up to the caucuses after whooping it up on New Year’s Eve and slowly making their way back to campus after the long winter break. Unlike most of the primaries over the next few months and the general election, Iowans will not walk into a voting booth and pull a lever, punch a card or swipe a touch screen to help vault one of the candidates into an early lead. In a quirky throwback to a previous time, they’ll gather in meeting halls, school gymnasiums and even living rooms to hash out their choices, a scenario that could be disorienting for young voters who may be casting ballots for the first time. With 1,774 caucuses statewide, any registered voter can show up at his or her local caucus meeting after pre-registering as a party member. Once there (the events begin promptly at 7 p.m. and last about an hour), they’ll hear bids from representatives of the candidates and then chat with friends, neighbors and strangers about the strengths and weaknesses of the various candidates as well as about issues that concern them. After everyone has said their piece, they’ll vote in a paper-ballot straw poll and choose their delegates to the state convention. Those 40 Republican National Convention delegates don’t have to immediately declare which candidate they support, but the press will quickly declare a winner based on the percentage of delegates won by each candidate. Unlike in years past, most of the leading candidates for the GOP nomination have not lavished the same kind of attention on Iowa that past presidential hopefuls have. That’s likely the reason why a recent Iowa State University/ Gazette/ KCRG-TV9 poll found that with just one week to go, nearly 38 percent of respondents said they were still trying to decide their vote, with another 34 percent saying they were leaning one way and only 28 percent locked in on the candidate they were definitely supporting. In other words, no matter who has the lead going into Tuesday night, there could be a major upset in the making if the candidates’ last-minute barnstorming blitzes have a big impact on Iowa voters used to lots of face time with their candidates. Plus, the winner doesn’t always take the prize, as in 2008, when former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee came in first in Iowa , despite Romney’s lavish spending of around $12,000 per vote. That’s why candidates have historically spent months and months meeting Iowa voters and introducing themselves over and over in order to pass the most crucial Hawkeye exam: the likability test. Once the dust clears, after months of campaigning and 13 televised debates, the national press will anoint a legitimate front-runner and a number of the candidates with the lowest totals will likely hang it up. 5 Things We’ve Learned from New Years Celebrations in Movies

I’m going to assume none of us learned anything from Garry Marshall’s New Year’s Eve other than, ” I was right to avoid New Year’s Eve .” Fortunately, there are real lessons to be gleaned from the best in New Year’s cinema, and we’ve lined up five movies with tips for your bash this weekend. Whether you’re ringing it in alone or spending it with the grimmest Vietnam vet on Earth, you’ll learn something valuable here. The Gold Rush : If you’re alone, you can envision a party that’s better than a real one. Charlie Chaplin’s iconic fork-and-roll dance from The Gold Rush is a fantasy sequence where the Little Tramp entertains guests who never show up to his place. Though the flatware choreography is cute, it’s hard not to look in Chaplin’s striking eyes during the entire sequence. But what a fabulous (and fictional) fete! The Apartment : Don’t pop a wine cork when your lady friend can mistake it for a gunshot. The Apartment is a treasure, but it’s also dour enough to put a damper on your New Year’s. Let’s revisit its best moment of pure levity and watch when Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine) ditches her party, realizes that C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon) risked his job for her, and arrives at his apartment to deliver a few classic lines of dialogue — namely, before a rummy game, “Shut up and deal.” C.C.’s cork-popping could be better timed, though — as Fran rushes to his door, she receives a ghastly fright. The Godfather, Part II : Don’t reveal that you’re a traitor during festivities. Fredo Corleone (the late, great John Cazale) receives a grim kiss from his brother Michael (Al Pacino) upon revealing that he’s the traitor that Michael suspects he is. This leads to a classic line, “I know it was you, Fredo — you broke my heart,” which also served as the inspiration for the John Cazale documentary I Knew It Was You . Oh, New Years. What a perfectly inopportune time to expose your true character. Forrest Gump : Do not party with your bitter commanding officer from Vietnam. If we were focusing on Jenny’s New Year’s festivities in Forrest Gump , this tip might be titled, “Don’t kill yourself!” But we’re looking at Forrest (Tom Hanks) now, just as he exchanges glances with the resentful, abrasive Lt. Dan (Gary Sinise). It seems obvious, but please try not to ring in a new year with a disrespectful, not to mention emotionally battered comrade. Sex and the City : Find your most sensible, downtrodden friend and hole up with her in a glamorous apartment. I’m always a little baffled by the vitriol spewed at the first Sex and the City movie, which was truly no different — or better or worse — than the TV show. Here, in the movie’s most poignant scene, we watch as Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) sneak over to Miranda’s (Cynthia Nixon) place for a warm New Year’s. That sweeping, Celtic rendition of “Auld Lang Syne” helps too. Got other favorite New Year’s movie lessons? Drop ’em in the comments below! Follow Louis Virtel on Twitter . And in Chicago, “American Idol” alum Lee Dwyze will be at the Hard Rock Hotel with DJ Chris Kennedy (Chris Masterson) spinning tunes. Kanye West’s plans have yet to be determined, but he recently tweeted he’s looking for a place to DJ right into 2012. We’re sure someone will find a place for him at their party. New York is the home of all things New Year’s. Fergie and will.i.am will both be in the Big Apple to ring in 2012.
