Andrew Jenks Has A Burning Question For Newt Gingrich

Star of MTV’s ‘World of Jenks’ relives his political baptism as he sets out on the campaign trail with GOP hopefuls for ‘Power Of 12.’ By Andrew Jenks Andrew Jenks speaks with young voters in “Power Of 12: Our Voice” Photo: MTV News As the namesake for MTV’s doc-style series “World of Jenks” , I’ve landed in some pretty surprising places and met more than a few interesting characters . But I never thought the first time I shook hands with a presidential candidate would be while he signed copies of a children’s book. Yet there I was at a Hilton Garden in Staten Island, where a group of mostly older book-buyers fiddled with their Sharpies in anticipation of GOP hopeful Newt Gingrich. While the former House Speaker began scribbling his signature on copies of his books as well as “Sweet Land of Liberty” — written by wife Callista and featuring a cover illustration of the main character, Ellis the Elephant — I came to a sudden realization: There, at the Staten Island Tea Party Town Hall, I’d entered the world of politics. And On Tuesday, I made it official, helping MTV kick off the Power of 12 , 11 months worth of election-year coverage, with the documentary short “Our Voice.” To be fair, though, I had always been a political junkie. I turn on the TV and go straight for the cable news stations. I DVR my favorite political morning show and watch it at night before scanning the nightly news programs … it’s gross. But there I was at a Gingrich political press conference (also part of the Town Hall event) at the Hilton. CNN, ABC and other bigwig networks that I’ve watched on a daily basis were gathered to my left. I felt like too much of an outsider to be standing in the middle of the pack of aggressive-looking news types — pens out, adjusting their hair and their camera lenses. As I held onto my MTV microphone, the other reporters eyed me as if I had checked into the wrong event. My friend and producer Monty, who had been to many of these political events, turned to me and asked, ‘OK, Newt points at you — Go! What’s your question?’ Occasionally, Jonah, my lifelong friend and [director of photography], expressed concern about our audio levels. Finally Gingrich walked in, though, and you could hear a pin drop. I’ve spoken with homeless people, convicted murderers, even people on their death beds, but this was different. I’d never seen a hush come over a room like that. A potential future president had just walked into an awkwardly named first-floor conference room (the Cherry Willow Suite?). ‘SPEAKER!’ ‘MR. SPEAKER!’ they started shouting, each one louder than the next. I found myself acting out a real-life episode of “The West Wing” and soon, I was yelling just like everyone else, trying to get my question in. It didn’t take long for it to click that this was how you played the game: being aggressive, sneaking into factories for a press conference, lingering around a car you suspect might be there to pick up a candidate, waiting three hours just to catch a politician walking down the hallway to use the bathroom. … I can’t imagine it had ever been that loud in the Cherry Willow Suite. Suddenly, Monty gave me a puzzled look, “What was that?” Next Question! On the second go-around, I decided I was going for it. “Speaker! Mr. Speaker!” My voice was being drowned out, and after it happened again for the third time, I took a deep breath. Next Question! So I shouted a combination of words that probably made little sense: “Jenks! MTV News! I’m traveling! The country! Everywhere and need to know!” In what seemed like slow motion, Newt turned his head and looked right at me … suddenly, everyone was looking at me, dead silent. I’m the only guy wearing a T-shirt, but the floor is mine. For more on MTV’s election coverage, check out the Power of 12 . And make sure to catch the premiere of “Our Voice” on Tuesday at 4:54 p.m. ET/PT on MTV! Related Videos Power Of 12: Andrew Jenks Kicks Off Election 2012

Kendall Jenner Tells Mom to Step Off

Turns out Kendall Jenner isn’t comfortable making a huge deal out of every moment in her life. Guess she and Kim Kardashian are only half related … In Kendall’s Sweet 16 special Monday night, the fledgling model flipped the f*%k out on her mom, Kris Jenner, who wanted the party in the Bahamas. “You’re trying to make this bigger and bigger and it’s embarrassing me,” Kendall Jenner complained. “You’re just giving me this [over-the-top party].” “You say you’re giving me all this but I don’t want it!” Fortunately for Kendall, Kris decided to step off. The teenager’s bash was moved to a West Hollywood hotel … nice and quiet, a low key affair (relatively speaking) in which she was given a new Range Rover. Give the 16-year-old Kendall credit for this, though: In lieu of gifts, she asked guests to give toys to sick children at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. “For my mom to be like, ‘Oh, we’re going to have this huge, extravagant party’ … to think those kids can’t even go to a party because they’re sitting in a hospital bed, it’s just really sad,” she explained, showing wisdom beyond her years (and DNA). Jason Alexander on Britney Spears Engagement: So FAKE!

Britney Spears’ engagement last week was welcome news to millions of fans and celebrities alike, drawing praise from the likes of 50 Cent and even K-Fed . Jason Alexander, however, does not approve. Back in 2004, Brit’s childhood friend personified the term 15 minutes of fame … though it was more like 55 hours. They got married on a whim in Vegas. Their union was annulled less than three days later, but Jason Alexander likely got it in at least once – and continues to throw in his two cents about Brit. In short, he’s not a fan of Jason Trawick. “I know everyone wants me to be happy about this, but I am not,” Alexander, who is now in training for the World of MMA fighting competition (apparently), told Us . “I think it’s fake and I think people are afraid to say it.” “If you look at all the pictures between them there is no connection. They look like they are going through the motions. It seems like a answer to the court thing.” The singer is currently under the conservatorship of her father Jamie Spears, and Trawick, who once served as the star’s agent, meets Jamie’s stamp of approval. “Sort of a nice way to sew it all up; [Britney] marries her handler,” Alexander sniped. “That way she always has someone controlling her. It’s really sort of sad.” Or you’re really sort of bitter. Somehow we doubt he has much contact with Spears these days, has met Jason Trawick , or has any clue what he’s talking about.

Swedish House Mafia’s ‘Antidote’ Video: Guns, Gore, Gangsters

‘Something’s going on there that’s really dark — in a good way,’ SHM tell MTV News of clip for Knife Party collabo. By Akshay Bhansali Swedish House Mafia Photo: Getty Images Swedish House Mafia have left New York after two spectacular displays of big-room house: They raved with 20,000 fans at Madison Square Garden, and the party continued for another 3,000 revelers until 8 a.m. at Roseland Ballroom, with support from Jacques Lu Cont, Carl Kennedy, AN21 and Max Vangeli . But before they head off to their solo New Year’s Eve gigs, Sebastian Ingrosso, Steve Angello and Axwell have one more gift for fans: an eye-popping first-person shooter Axwell joked to MTV News when we caught up with him and Angello last week. Reminiscent of Prodigy’s now-classic “Smack My Bitch Up” video, “Antidote” was shot in New York City’s Meatpacking District at a location designed to mirror a Japanese strip club. In the clip, a team of gangsters are seen ogling topless dancers before they don masks to rob an underworld boss. (SHM never actually appear in the short, which was cut in both clean and explicit versions.) “Great guys,” Angello said of the video’s creators. “[We] gave them free creativity to do whatever they wanted to, and they did. They delivered. They ran with the idea and it’s crazy.” “What I like about that video is that it feels real,” Axwell said. “It’s a part of a movie. Something’s going on there that’s really dark.” “In a good way,” Angello added. What do you think of Swedish House Mafia’s “Antidote” video? Sound off in the comments below! John Leguizamo Pushes Boundaries In MTV’s ‘Pioneers’ Speaker Series

‘I’m coming into the party, I’m going to be somebody and you can’t stop me,’ actor says of his career pursuits. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Sway Calloway John Leguizamo Photo: MTV News Triple-threat talent John Leguizamo has made a career out of pushing boundaries, not being afraid to speak his mind and never taking no for an answer. As such, we were proud to have him as part of our MTV Pioneers Speaker Series, where he sat down with MTV News’ Sway Calloway to talk about breaking the mold, not being typecast and what success means to him over a career that has included roles in film, television and on Broadway . One of his many groundbreaking roles was the beloved character Chi-Chi from “To Wong Fu, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar,” a role to which Leguizamo said he gave 100 percent. “I just went all out. I wanted awards and sh–, so I wasn’t playing,” he joked about his motivations for taking on the character. “I was going to take no prisoners. I was on a vegetarian no-protein [diet], so all my muscles would disappear. I stopped training, I would just run like crazy. In the movie, they were great, we did a lot of research. We went to all the drag queen clubs, like Escuelita, which used to exist here [in New York City], with all the Latin drag queens, and we had a godmother drag queen who would put us through the paces every day,” he recalled of his transformation with co-stars Patrick Swayze and Wesley Snipes. “We worked every day for hours and hours every day until we could get it perfectly drag queen-like.” When asked about how he approached being a minority and how that affected his decisions, Leguizamo said that you have to know what you want and go for it. “You’ve got to be thoughtful about your career. When you’re a minority — and I don’t really even like that word anymore because we’re not as minority as we used to be — you have to think about what you’re saying and what you’re leaving behind. When I was a little kid, we didn’t see [ourselves] on TV or anywhere. It was weird because you didn’t feel like you were a part of the American fiber,” he recalled. “Latin people, we have a 45 to 50 percent dropout rate in this country, and I understand that. It’s a tragedy and shouldn’t be happening, but you understand it. You don’t feel connected in that positive way that your people and you are going to make it, and ‘this is your chance and this is your opportunity,’ no, you feel like you’re not really a part of it. “You have to crash into the party even if you’re not invited,” he said, indicating that those who have dreams of “making it” have to carve out their own career paths. “I was going to be that guy, I didn’t care I wasn’t invited. ‘I’m coming into the party, I’m going to be somebody and you can’t stop me.’ ”

Foster The People, Florence Welch Pick Best Of 2011

As MTV unveils our year-end favorites, we ask ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ rockers and Florence and the Machine frontwoman for theirs. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Foster The People’s Mark Foster and Cubbie Fink Photo: MTV News In 2011, we saw new acts break through to the big time and formerly new ones continue on their paths toward superstardom. We welcomed the likes of the Weeknd and Frank Ocean to the party and watched with pride as Drake and Adele marched on to greatness. But of all the year’s brand-new stars, few broke out to the degree that L.A. rock trio Foster the People did, thanks in no small part to the success of their smash hit “Pumped Up Kicks,” #7 on MTV’s Best Songs of 2011 . Of all the returning stars, none returned with the power and grace of Florence and the Machine, who wowed critics and fans with their sophomore album, Ceremonials, and stirring single “Shake It Out.” So, as MTV looks back on 2011 , we’re reaching out to a host of acts — who not only dominated the past 12 months, but also came to define them — to get their take on the year in music. And who better to ask than Foster and Florence, two artists who did both … and then some? We spoke to both bands about their favorite songs, albums and artists of 2011, and the rather diverse range of answers sort of sums up the year rather nicely. After all, outside of Adele, was there anything we could all agree on? “I’d say probably my favorite album of the year is Bon Iver’s new album , and I hope he sweeps the Grammys, because the guy’s just killing it right now,” Foster’s Cubbie Fink said. “We’re competing with him!” frontman Mark Foster laughed. “And I hope he wins!” Fink said. “I’ve listened to that album on repeat all year. It’s really amazing.” As far as their favorite artist? Well, Iver ranks pretty high, but of all the acts they listened to this year, none resonated with Foster the People quite like Swedish electro act Little Dragon. “They’ve been a favorite band of mine for a while, and we’ve got to play with them a couple times this year and see them live in a bunch of different settings,” Foster’s Mark Pontius said. “I’m always just so inspired by them live, and the new record that came out this year [ Ritual Union ] is pretty fantastic as well.” Florence Welch was inspired this year by the magnificent murk of Canadian R&B producer/singer Abel Tesfaye, better known as the Weeknd. “My favorite song of the year was the Weeknd, ‘High for This,’ ” she said. “That was this year, [right]? I’ve been obsessively listening to that song for the past few days on repeat. I must’ve listened to it about 700 times.” Of course, when it comes to her favorite artists of 2011, Welch kept things close to home, choosing a pair of British bands — one of which didn’t even release an album this year. “I’m really into this English band called the Alpines; I think they’re really good,” she said. “And I’ve just heard some of the Maccabees’ new stuff, and I’m so excited about their new record coming out, because from the first song I’ve heard, it just sounds amazing. I’m such a big fan of theirs, so I’m really looking forward to that.” All this week, watch “AMTV” on MTV every day at 8 a.m. ET for our Best of 2011 lists. Then, come to MTVNews.com at 5 p.m. as we reveal our top picks of the year!
