Miami don tweets Wale, Meek Mill and Pill set to appear on compilation album due May 24. The Miami rap don announced that he’s releasing a compilation album called Self Made that will be in stores May 24. The Bawse delivered the news about the new album via Twitter , including his latest signees — DC rapper Wale, Philadelphia’s Meek Mill and Atlanta MC Pill — in the tweet. After a bidding war that included Bryan “Baby” Williams’ Cash Money Records and Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Bad Boy Records, the Def Jam artist decided to pass on aligning with another hip-hop mogul, choosing instead to partner with the Warner Music Group to distribute his Maybach Music Group imprint. “We are thrilled to be in business with Rick Ross,” said Todd Moscowitz, co-president and CEO of Warner Bros. Records, in a statement last month. “We were drawn to his hustle. Ross is an entrepreneur who built his company from the ground up. He’s a music magnate, a lightning rod, and an empire builder. Our partnership with him is about building a brand that endures. We back his vision all the way and are ready to give him the resources he needs to pursue that vision.” Of the aforementioned artists, Wale was the first to sign with the Bawse’s label, followed by Meek Mill and Pill, who was already a Warner artist. Other acts on MMG include Gunplay, Torch and Young Breed of rap group Triple Cs as well as R&B singer Masspike Miles. Last July, Rick Ross released his fourth solo album, Teflon Don, which featured the hits “B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast)” and “Aston Martin Music” as well as the street anthem “MC Hammer.” Beginning March 18, Ross will be heading out on the road with Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne and Travis Barker for the I Am Music II Tour . ‘It’s not always a bad thing to be the first person’ voted off, 25-year-old diva says. By Gil Kaufman Ashthon Jones performs on “American Idol” Photo: FOX Ashthon Jones is what you might call a glass-half-full kind of gal. Whereas some might consider being a wild-card pick and then the first finalist eliminated on season 10 of “American Idol” a bummer, the 25-year-old Nashville native said Friday (March 11) that she’s choosing to see this as an opportunity to get her career started in earnest. After winning the judges over early with her diva style and voluminous hair, Jones stumbled on Wednesday night with a weak version of the somewhat obscure Diana Ross song “When You Tell Me That You Love Me,” which she sang only marginally better on Thursday’s show in her last-ditch effort to stay in the running. But what’s done is done, and now the former teenage runaway said she’s eager to leave her hardscrabble life (and retail job) behind and get on to the next thing. Q : Are you going back to your store job in Nashville? A : No, I’m not! I left it there, and I left it there to stay. I’ve worked and worked all my life, and now it’s time for me to be the artist and the performer that God put in me a long time ago … and hopefully opportunities are there for me. Q : What do you think America was missing about you during that top 24 round? A : I don’t know! I was thinking the same thing. I just wanted people to see my personality, and I don’t think the show showed my personality as much as I wanted it to. … I’m kind of glad that the judges saw that personality of a diva, but I didn’t want the world to see me as diva-like, like I’m all that. … I have faith and confidence in myself. I’ve never been timid onstage. Q : A lot was made of your song choice, but it was not as obscure as some of the other songs the contestants chose. If you could go back now, would you have chosen a different Diana Ross song? A : As I look back at it now … I chose that song for a reason. I listened to all the Diana Ross songs, and that one, for some reason, spoke to me. … I related it to my life and my experiences and my faith and the love that I have around me. As I was singing that song, the lyrics is what spoke to me. Q : What was the best piece of advice you received from one of the judges? A : Steven and Randy told me some great things, but Jennifer always had something real to say that came straight from her spirit. … She always told me, “You’re amazing, you’re gonna go far … I see it, I see it, I see it.” And last night she told me, “It’s all about the songs in the music business.” Even when you get that first record, make sure it’s a hit before you put it out, because that’s what America will remember, those great songs, and they’re never gonna go away. Q : If you could describe Steven Tyler in one word, what would it be? A : Fabulous. He was fabulous. From his clothes to his shoes [to] what he said. He didn’t care what people thought and said exactly what he felt. And behind the scenes, he was the most humble and sweet person. Q : You looked like you were in such pain when you found out that you were going home. What was going on with you at that moment? A : It really was not pain. It was more so leaving the stage and my friends that I had made. I just had to let it out. I always hold stuff in, I’m a very, very strong person … [but] sometimes you have to let it out, you have to show your emotion. Q : What about the fact that you were the first person voted off? Is there any stigma to that? A : I think it’s not always a bad thing to be the first person. It can be a good thing. Everything that I went through on the show, now I’m going to take it and put it to work in my career. Q : Where do you yourself in two to five years? A : I really see myself performing. I see myself going overseas performing. I see myself helping my mom out with her businesses that she wants to do. I see myself continuing to be a songwriter and a motivator. Q : Do you see yourself winning a Grammy, being a big, big artist? A : It’s possible. You can’t really say, “I’m going to do that.” But I’m a firm believer in speaking everything into existence. … Yes, I believe that I’m going to have a Grammy, I believe that something great is going to come out of this experience. ‘American Idol’ Castoff Ashthon Jones Sees Grammys In Her Future
‘I got some nice fresh blood in me and feeling better,’ finalist tweets. By Gil Kaufman “American Idol” Finalist Casey Abrams Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images There was a conspicuous absence on Thursday night’s “American Idol” elimination show, long before Ashthon Jones got booted out of the top 13. That didn’t happen until the end of the show. It was judges’ darling and bushy-bearded budding sex symbol Casey Abrams . After another impressive performance on Wednesday night, when he took on Joe Cocker’s version of the Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends,” the 19-year-old film-camp counselor was nowhere to be seen on the stage. Host Ryan Seacrest announced at the top of the show that Abrams was hospitalized for the second time this season and would not be joining his pals for the results broadcast. “You’ll notice that Casey is missing from the group. He is unfortunately sick and in the hospital right now,” Seacrest announced. “Wave to him. … We know you’re watching buddy, feel better — shout-out to the nurses. Get back here soon, OK?” While a spokesperson for “Idol” told MTV News that no further details were available on Abrams’ illness on Thursday night, the bass-playing singer tweeted about the situation after the show, writing “Hey guys, thanks for the well wishes, I got some nice fresh blood in me and feeling better. People at Idol & Cedars are treatin me real good.” An unnamed “Idol” insider reportedly told the Hollywood Reporter that Abrams received two blood transfusions while in the hospital to treat a condition called ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory condition that affects the lining of the large intestine. Earlier this season, on February 23, Abrams was rushed to the ER after complaining about stomach pains and almost missed the subsequent taping of the top-12 men’s performances, which potentially would have eliminated him from the competition before the finals. Abrams was in no danger of going home on Thursday night’s show, but if his condition continues and he is unable to perform next week, he could be sent home. Last season, eventual runner-up Crystal Bowersox nearly missed out on her chance to stay on the show when she was rushed to the hospital, necessitating a rare lineup shuffle that forced the men to perform a night earlier than scheduled. Had Bowersox not recovered in time, producers said that she was in danger of being eliminated from the show. Ummm… A growing number of white Americans are acting like a racially oppressed majority. They are adopting the language and protest tactics of an embattled minority group, scholars and commentators say. They point to these signs of racial anxiety: • A recent Public Religion Research Institute poll found 44% of Americans surveyed identify discrimination against whites as being just as big as bigotry aimed at blacks and other minorities. The poll found 61% of those identifying with the Tea Party held that view, as did 56% of Republicans and 57% of white evangelicals. • More colleges are offering courses in “Whiteness Studies” as white Americans cope with becoming what one commentator calls a “dispossessed majority group.” Whiteness studies?? Really??? • A Texas group recently formed the “Former Majority Association for Equality” to offer college scholarships to needy white men. Colby Bohannan, the group’s president, says white men don’t have scholarship options available to minorities. “White males are definitely not a majority” anymore, he says. We died at “Former Majority Association for Equality.” • U.S. Census Bureau projections that whites will become a minority by 2050 are fueling fears that whiteness no longer represents the norm. This fear has been compounded by the recent recession, which hit whites hard. Oh. Lol. • Conservative talk-show host Rush Limbaugh argued in a radio show that Republicans are an “oppressed minority” in need of a “civil rights movement” because its members willingly sit in the “back of the bus” and “are afraid of the fire hoses and the dogs.” • Fox talk-show host Glenn Beck led a march on Washington (attended primarily by white people) to “restore honor,” and once called President Obama a racist with a “deep-seated hatred for white people and white culture.” He later said he regretted making that comment. • Conservative news outlets ran a number of stories last summer highlighting an incident from the 2008 elections, in which activists from the New Black Panther Party appeared to be intimidating voters at a polling place. Those claims were never proven. Mass rallies in Washington, voter intimidation at the polls, creating ethnic studies programs at colleges to promote racial self-awareness — it sounds like a script from a civil rights documentary. But not everyone buys that script. Mona Charen, a conservative columnist for the National Review, challenges that view with this question: If more white Americans feel like an embattled minority, why did they elect President Barack Obama? “Did they become racist after electing the first black president?” she asks. Charen says the United States today is “incredibly tolerant and open.” Sure, she says, there are individuals who nurture racial animosity, but most Americans deserve praise for looking past race. The proof, she says, isn’t just in the fact that the nation elected its first black president. She cites the rise of more interracial couples. “When I grew up, it was incredibly rare to see interracial couples,” she says. “People would turn their heads on the streets. Young Money diva calls latest clip ‘playful’ and ‘sexy.’ By D.L. Chandler, with reporting by Audrey Kim Nicki Minaj on the set of “Super Bass” Photo: MTV News While Nicki Minaj is supposedly on a recording hiatus, that isn’t stopping the chart-topping rap diva from creating steamy visuals for a track featured on the deluxe edition of her platinum-selling debut, Pink Friday. MTV News caught up with the fashion-forward diva on the set of her new video for “Super Bass.” Dazzling in a skintight pink bodysuit emblazoned with giraffe prints, Nicki completed the look with a half-blond and half-pink wig, gold eye shadow and bright pink lipstick matching the outfit. Nicki revealed the theme behind the song during a break in shooting. ” ‘Super Bass’ is about the boy that you are crushing over,” Nicki said. “And you kind of want to get your mack on, but you’re taking the playful approach.” Gyrating atop a crystal-clear motorcycle, Nicki is clearly upping the sex appeal. The Young Money diva explained the focus behind the video: “I just wanted to do something real colorful and cutesy. This is an icy world, it’s a sexy world, it’s a playful world. Of course I have lots of eye candy for my girls and my boys,” she teased. The teasing doesn’t stop there. “We have a lot of little surprises in store for this particular video,” Nicki promised. “I would like to put out 50 videos. The videos really tell the story a lot more elaborately than just the song does.” Nicki also talked about her smash hit “Moment 4 Life” and its incredible staying power. “It’s been #1 on the rap Billboard charts and then it’s been #1 on the R&B and hip-hop charts,” marveled the 26-year-old starlet. Pink Friday continues to break records as well, with the album achieving a milestone of the most consecutive weeks in the top 10 by a female rapper. The hip-hop beauty summed up neatly her approach to the video in a few brief words. “I felt like ‘Moment 4 Life’ was like letting my hair down, but ‘Super Bass’ is letting it all hang out,” Nicki said with a playful chuckle. It’s all about Casey Abrams: ‘I love him — his attitude, his charisma,’ closet ‘Idol’ fans says on ‘Idol Party Live.’ By Katie Byrne, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Sammi Photo: Jonathan Goldner/ MTV News “Idol Party Live” took a trip to the Jersey Shore on Thursday (March 10), when Sammi “Sweetheart” Giancola stopped by to chat with MTV News “American Idol” expert Jim Cantiello. Who knew Sammi was a closet “Idol” fan? “I think I just really like watching it this time around because there’s so many amazing singers,” she said. “Everyone’s unique in their own way and brings their own flair to the show.” We had to find out who the reality-TV star is rooting for this season, and she had to praise her #1 guy: Casey Abrams. “I love him — his attitude, his charisma, he’s funny, he brings something new every week,” she gushed. “I just like his style. I get chills. Whenever I get chills when I watch ‘American Idol,’ I know I love somebody.” In honor of Sammi’s “Jersey Shore” catchphrase — “I’m done” — we played a round of “Done or Fun” with the “Idol” contestants. So who did Sam find fun, and who was she over? She gave a thumbs-up to Casey (of course) and also Stefano Langone, James Durbin and Thia Megia, but it wasn’t sunshine and rainbows all around. While Sammi thinks Jacob Lusk is “fabulous, don’t get me wrong,” she “didn’t like his song choice.” But she isn’t quite “done” with him yet: “Let’s put him as a maybe.” Lauren Alaina, on the other hand, has been completely written off by the “Jersey Shore” starlet. “I think she’s so cute, but I think she’s still young and has a long way to come to progress,” she explained. “Maybe I’m just done because she’s up against these other amazing singers.” We had to slip in a few “Shore” questions, and Cantiello brought up Sam’s recent Ronnie dis when she told her ex he looked “pale.” This prompted recent “Idol” castoff Rachel Zevita, also an “Idol Party Live” guest, to wonder: “If he’s pale, what would I look like in that house?” “We’ll give you a spray tan before you come to the house,” Sammi promised. A number of this year’s top 13 stumbled on Wednesday night, and for once, host Ryan Seacrest didn’t torture the contestants by making them wait until the show’s final moments to find out the bottom three. In the end, it was curtains for wild card Ashthon Jones, who stumbled on Wednesday night with a limp cover of Diana Ross’ “When You Tell Me That You Love Me.” Earlier in the night, after slogging through the Ford video and a trip to the “Red Riding Hood” premiere, Seacrest finally got to the business of building that bottom three, calling out Jacob Lusk, Stefano Langone and Karen Rodriguez to center stage. He pulled a bit of rope-a-dope by telling all three they were safe, then adding an “except,” and it was Rodriguez who made season 10’s first long walk to the bottom three, landing there after her messy cover of Selena’s “I Could Fall in Love.” The next group featured teen Lauren Alaina, Haley Reinhart and Jones, with the latter an almost unanimous pick by our “Idol” experts to land in the bottom three . After tearfully admitting that the harsh criticism she got Wednesday night, well, “sucked,” Alaina was waved over to safety. In a shock, though, Seacrest then announced that after 30 million votes, both Jones and Reinhart were in the bottom three as well, ending the suspense early. Jones sang for her life one more time near show’s end, but her thin, reedy vocals were not much better than the night before, despite her clear attempt to go out with a bang. Ash broke down in tears, the judges deliberated, but it was a no-go. “Not this time, baby, I’m sorry,” Jennifer Lopez said after a long exhale, revealing that it was a unanimous no. Jones’ trip to “Idol” ended with a montage keyed to this year’s goodbye song, former “Idol” champ David Cook’s cover of Simple Minds’ “Don’t You Forget About Me.” The only real drama in the show was that for the second time this season, bearded hunk of love Casey Abrams was in the hospital on Thursday night, reportedly due to stress-induced stomach problems. He made a similar trip for treatment more than a week ago. At press time a spokesperson for “Idol” said there was no additional information available about Abrams’ condition. Though it wasn’t pulled out Thursday night, Seacrest announced that the show will once again give the judges a single save this season, which they must use before the top five. Viewers also got a look at the gigantic Beverly Hills mansion the contestants will be living in this year, complete with a star-worthy swimming pool, grand piano, Ford car-shaped pool table and a kitchen that’s bigger than most New York apartments. Looking remarkably tame in a T-shirt, jeans and a black jacket, former “Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert dropped in for an acoustic run through his single “Aftermath,” which mixed his signature power high notes with some nuanced balladeering. Proceeds of the sales of a dance-remix version of the single will go to the anti-bullying Trevor Project. Also dropping in was Diddy-Dirty Money to perform “Coming Home,” complete with a dramatic piano assist from Skylar Grey . The top 12 will do it all again next week.
