Dutch Producer Afrojack Makes New York Debut With Roxy Cottontail

Promoter Cottontail embraces the Dutch house sound sweeping the clubs this year. By Akshay Bhansali Roxy Cottontail Photo: Getty Images After making a dramatic splash at this year’s Winter Music Conference, Dutch electronic DJ/producer Afrojack has been on his first U.S. tour for these past few weeks. This weekend will see him spinning on the East Coast for a gig Friday night (June 11) at Voyeur in Philadelphia, and on Saturday at Santos Party House in New York. It’s been an impressive year thus far for Afrojack (born Nick van de Wall). The 22-year-old rising star’s electro-house single “Bangduck” is a house-set favorite, and his collaboration with crossover star David Guetta , “Louder Than Words,” has been among the top downloads on the Beatport.com charts since the song dropped just over two weeks ago. Saturday’s gig at Santos will mark Afrojack’s first performance in New York, and fittingly, he will be sharing the bill with famous New York party promoter Roxy Cottontail. Cottontail, who’s had a hand in furthering the careers of the likes of Kid Cudi, Diplo and Spank Rock, is now an artist in her own right (though she still throws parties from time to time). She released “Let’s Make Nasty,” produced by electro-clash DJ/producer/promoter Larry Tee, and Afrojack went on to remix the song in time for this year’s WMC. The song quickly became one of the more sought-after house songs of the spring. “Larry and I had talked about who should do the remix,” Cottontail told MTV News this week. “We both agreed that Diplo should do it, but he was busy with Major Lazer. Then Larry said, ‘There’s this kid coming out, his name is Afrojack. He actually just remixed Major Lazer, and it’s getting a lot of play. I think he’s gonna be huge.’ Ultra [Records] had him remix it, and I was like, ‘This is awesome.’ I think it was kind of like a blessing that Diplo didn’t do it and gave the opportunity to Afrojack. “This past year, the Dutch house — Holland house — that sound has really taken over,” Cottontail continued. “And when I heard it, it was such a progressive sound. Very electronic, but still with a poppy kind of element to it. I really think he put the cherry on top of the cake.” Cottontail assured MTV News that she and Afrojack will be performing their hit song on stage this weekend in New York. And following the success of her first venture into the Holland house genre, she had her next single, “My Bad,” produced by Dutch electro outfit Party Squad, who have also collaborated with Diplo and Afrojack in the past. “I think it’s really cute, catchy, kind of naughty, but not offensive,” she said of the new track, which she hopes to release by the end of the summer. “It’s about making mistakes, but doing it a cute way.”

D-day 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa

South Africa’s World Cup flows over In one of the largest displays of national spirit ever seen in the country, South Africans took to the streets at midday on Wednesday in a massive display of support for the home team as a proud nation let the world know just what kind of tournament Africa’s first World Cup will be. Around Johannesburg the crowds were there to welcome the national side, Bafana Bafana, who were travelling in an open-top bus, at every turn they made on their way from their hotel in Sandton to their training ground at Wits University. In Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and the other host cities, the atmosphere was no less electric as World Cup fever spread quickly, signalled by the distinct drone of the vuvuzela. Celebrating the spirit of the nation “I’m here to support Bafana Bafana and to get behind my country,” said Johannesburg resident Zeyn Tilly. “It feels amazing to be here, it is the first time in my life I have seen this unity in South Africa. The atmosphere is just electric.” For Tilly, this is the start of a fun-filled six weeks. “You can have no idea how incredible this is for me. I just want it to go as slow as possible so that I can enjoy every minute. This tournament is about more than just football.” For Joseph Mabea, Wednesday’s street parade was about celebrating the spirit of the country. “I am a huge Bafana fan,” Mabea said over the din of the vuvuzelas. “I have seen the passion in them, and I want them to know I am with them all the way.” Mabea has a ticket for the opening match, and the atmosphere of the parade is only getting him more excited. “I will be there, and I can’t wait. Seeing such a match live, no longer on the television, is amazing for me. The feeling here is amazing, I am running short of words. I wish this could happen more often, I wish this could be my life, showing how united we are as a nation.” Support for the national side has been growing in recent weeks, both as a result of the proximity of the tournament and due to their recent performances on the pitch. “This is a great team,” said another Joburger, Muhammed Moosa. “Twelve unbeaten games – they are just great, and they will do us proud.” Many businesses allowed their staff to come and join the party in the streets, adding a huge number of people to the midday festivities. ‘Thank you, Bafana, for making us one’ Laughing with friends as she tried to blow her vuvuzela, Leanne Toffie said she wanted to show her passion for her national side. “To be here, united with my fellow South Africans in support of Bafana Bafana – it is just an amazing feeling, seeing the country united as one.” Nicholas Ndlovu, fully clad in a Bafana Bafana supporters’ uniform complete with makarapa, vuvuzela, overalls and glasses, said: “It feels like I am in heaven coming into a crowd of people like this, it makes me so proud. Thank you, Bafana, for making us one.” Many tourists are in Cape Town for the World Cup, and it did not take long for them to get in on the act and also try and blow a vuvuzela. Pablo Ezeqiel Perez Murua from Argentina and his family are staying at a guest house in Plattekloof. They came to explore Cape Town for the day, and were pleasantly surprised at the outburst of patriotism. “Cape Town is a wonderful city, the people are friendly and very patriotic,” Murua said. “I have also bought a trumpet [vuvuzela] and will blow it at our first game against Korea. Deon Malan, who happened upon the scenes of celebration while walking through the city on his way to meet friends at a restaurant, said: “Walking down Long Street [in Cape Town] was incredible. People were standing on balconies overlooking the street while outside people were congregating in groups blowing their vuvuzelas. “It was the first time that I can really remember seeing all South Africans united in such a way,” said Malan. “It was so overwhelming.” Source: 2010 Fifa World Cup South Africa Organising Committee 2010 World Cup Blog for the Fans

Black Eyed Peas, John Legend, Alicia Keys, More Light Up World Cup Concert

Stars from across the globe gather in South Africa to kick off the 2010 FIFA World Cup with a massive concert. By Mawuse Ziegbe Fergie performs with the Black Eyed Peas at the World Cup Concert Thursday Photo: Getty Images On Thursday (June 10), many of the world’s biggest entertainers helped kick off what is arguably the world’s biggest sporting event, the 2010 FIFA World Cup, with a massive concert in Johannesburg’s Orlando Stadium. As the soccer/football competition pits nations against each other in the beautiful game, the concert highlighted Africa’s singular talent while setting the stage for some international collaborations. A legion of dancers and drummers heralded South African trumpet legend Hugh Masekela, who opened the event with singer Lira. Following an address by FIFA president Sepp Blatter and South African president Jacob Zuma, the Black Eyed Peas rocked the stage. The Peas got the party started with their feel-good hit “Where Is the Love?” Fergie and Will.I.Am (who was decked out in a snappy sequined jacket with rope detail reminiscent of Michael Jackson) then led the thousands of concertgoers through “Pump It.”

Did Politico Inadvertently Reveal Too Much Detail About Cynical Democrat Sales Pitch for Amnesty?

Illegal aliens. Eeek! I said the forbidden term. For the past few years the “preferable” but less accurate term to describe that group has been “illegal immigrants.” Even that modified term has been too harsh for advocates of amnesty who prefer the completely inaccurate term, “undocumented workers.” However, in order to cynically sell the public on amnesty, the Democrats are willing to temporarily swallow their pride and use “illegal immigrants” according to a Politico article written by Carrie Budoff Brown who reveals a lot more cynicism on the part of the Democrats than she probably intended: Long pilloried for being soft on illegal immigration, top Democratic officials have concluded there’s only one way they can hope to pass a comprehensive immigration bill: Talk more like Republicans. They’re seizing on the work of top Democratic Party operatives who, after a legislative defeat in 2007, launched a multiyear polling project to craft an enforcement-first, law-and-order, limited-compassion pitch that now defines the party’s approach to the issue. The 12 million people who unlawfully reside the country? Call them “illegal immigrants,” not “undocumented workers,” the pollsters say. I’m sure Ms Brown just wanted to demonstrate how “smart” the Democrats have become on the amnesty issue but in that attempt she has also revealed an incredible level of cynicism on their part. Here is more of Brown revealing how the Democrats are attempting to fool the public through the cynical use of nice sounding words: Strip out the empathy, too. Democrats used to offer immigrants “an earned path to citizenship” so hardworking people trying to support their families could “come out of the shadows.” To voters, that sounded like a gift, the operatives concluded.  Now, Democrats emphasize that it’s “unacceptable” to allow 12 million people to live in America illegally and that the government must “require” them to register and “get right with the law.” That means three things: “Obey our laws, learn our language and pay our taxes” — or face deportation.  Right about now I can almost hear Democrat officials hissing to each other about how Brown was way too upfront in revealing their attempt to sell the amnesty snake oil to the public. And now Brown names names: President Barack Obama uses the buzzwords. So does the congressional leadership. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), author of the Democratic immigration plan, scolds advocates who refer to illegal immigrants as “undocumented workers.”  “Buzzwords.” Which means the folks who use them like Obama and Schumer are also amnesty snake oil salesmen. Thanks for that revelation, Carrie. However even these meaningless snake oil buzzwords are a bit too much for some of the liberals to swallow such as amnesty advocate Frank Sharry: Even then, the poll-tested words and phrases will only go so far if Democrats fail to exert discipline and unify behind the get-tough message. And at this point, not all immigration reform advocates have bought into the rhetorical hard line, which aims squarely at winning the political center. Even Sharry, who spearheaded the effort, declines the advice of pollsters to excise “undocumented workers” from his lexicon, saying it feels too much like it plays into conservative efforts to “dehumanize” immigrants. Of course, what article about the cynical manipulation of emotions via buzzwords would be complete without the input of the logic-denying Democrat advisor, Drew Westen ? “When [voters] hear ‘undocumented worker,’ they hear a liberal euphemism, it sounds to them like liberal code,” said Drew Westen, a political consultant who has helped Sharry hone the message through dial testing. “I am often joking with leaders of progressive organizations and members of Congress, ‘If the language appears fine to you, it is probably best not to use it. You are an activist, and by definition, you are out of the mainstream.’” Have you noticed how Democrats have begun mouthing words in support of border security before amnesty can be considered? All a poll driven act according to Brown’s revelation: …Podesta and Sharry assembled a roster of boldfaced Democratic pollsters — Stan Greenberg, Celinda Lake, Guy Molyneux — to figure out how the party would ever get away from one of the most devastating GOP lines of attack, that a comprehensive immigration plan amounted to “amnesty” for illegals. The results made Greenberg a convert. His surveys of swing districts in 2006 and 2007 concluded that Democrats took a political risk by discussing immigration. Greenberg thought frustration with immigrants would spawn an environment similar to the welfare backlash in the 1990s and that Democrats needed to get tough on border security before talking about citizenship.   But polling that Greenberg, Lake and Molyneux conducted in 2008 proved to Greenberg that Democrats could talk in a way that won over voters. It needed to sound tough and pragmatic, but not overly punitive, the pollsters said. The message beat the amnesty charge in their polling. Got that? The call for border security is just a poll driven act on the part of the Democrats?   More poll driven pretension: The most significant shift in language involves the path to citizenship. Pollsters determined that Democrats sounded as though they wanted to reward illegal immigrants , even though lawmakers almost always laid out that requirements and delays that would precede citizenship. “It comes back to this idea: We give permission; we set the terms; it’s under our control; and if you meet those conditions, you are us, welcome to America,” Westen said of the new frame . The “new frame” i.e. the “new act.”   So thank you, Carrie Budoff Brown, for revealing the incredible level of “fool the public” cynicism on the part of the Democrats on the issue of amnesty. It was probably unintentional on your part to reveal so much but thanks anyway.
