George Clooney Pays Patron’s Dinner Bill, Remains Awesome

Come on, George Clooney. It’s not enough that you’re talented, handsome and in possession of a great sense of humor?!? You need to be overly generous as well? Can’t you give other bachelors out there a chance?!? According to United Press International, the actor paid for a stranger’s meal this week while dining in a Berlin restaurant because he feared his party had been too loud while the man was trying to eat nearby. “That’s not true at all,” the man said in response to Clooney’s concern. “They had behaved in a very cultivated manner. I was stunned.” Still, the Oscar winner went ahead and footed the stranger’s $134.66 tab. Clooney is in Germany filming scenes for the upcoming film The Monuments Men . By all accounts, he’s still dating Stacy Keibler . But if they split, we have a feeling he won’t have trouble finding a new woman or six dozen.

River Phoenix’s Last Film To Debut At Miami International Film Festival

Twenty years after its production abruptly halted, the North American premiere of director George Sluizer’s Dark Blood starring River Phoenix, Jonathan Pryce and Judy Davis will screen at the 30th edition of the Miami International Film Festival. Dark Blood was 80% finished when Phoenix died of an overdose in Hollywood in 1993. Footage from the film sat in a vault for years until 1999 when Sluizer learned that the uncompleted film was going to be burned. With less than 48 hours notice, he obtained the footage, according to festival organizers, and had it moved to The Netherlands where it remained for over ten years. Sluizer then set out to complete the film last year and had its world premiere at the 2012 Dutch Film Festival ” Dark Blood is a film of legend, one of Hollywood’s great mysteries,” said MIFF Executive Director Jaie Laplante in a statement. “The tragic loss of River Phoenix’s outstanding talent is still profoundly felt 20 years later.  We are proud that George Sluizer has honored Miami as the place to finally share his remarkable collaboration with Phoenix and the other great artists involved with Dark Blood .” The complete lineup of the 30th Miami International Film Festival will be unveiled later this month. The description of Dark Blood provided by the Miami International Film Festival: Jet-set Hollywood couple Harry (Jonathan Pryce) and Buffy (Judy Davis) travel through the desert on a second honeymoon, trying to save their marriage.  Their car breaks down in the middle of nowhere leaving them to find shelter in Boy’s (River Phoenix) beaten down shack, unaware they will become his prisoners.  Boy’s wife died of leukemia after nuclear tests occurred in the desert leaving him alone and far away from society.  Buffy is seduced by Boy’s honesty and vulnerabilities, while Harry represents everything Boy hates about the civilized world and its culture.  Buffy decides to sleep with Boy to buy the couple’s freedom, but these circumstances will push Harry to the edge, leading to a terrible tragedy. Ryan Gosling Was Almost A Backstreet Boy? He Doesn’t Actually Say That

Ryan Gosling  hasn’t saved any lives on the streets of New York lately, or gotten the bottom of the whole Area 51 aliens debate that we know he’ll solve one day. So, in the mean time, let’s take a look at these Wait! What? Internet reports that he almost became a member of the Backstreet Boys .  Gosling was a member of the Disney Channel’s Mickey Mouse Club in the mid-1990s — along with Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake — and he did inspire a coloring book  last year, so it’s not much of a leap to imagine him wearing lightning-bolt sideburns and an all-white ensemble and using his hands demonstratively as he sings. The thing is, if you look at the Celebuzz video clip that started the blogosphere a-humming, at no point does Gosling say that he wanted to be part of the boy band. Ryan Gosling Talks Backstreet Boys Based on my minimal experience interviewing Gosling, the actor is adept at using his well-developed sense of humor to disarm and even befuddle reporters and junketeers who get him in the hot seat.  The only thing Gosling really says in the clip below is that, during his Mickey Mouse Club days, he lived in the same apartment complex as Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean , who was talking about starting the band. The rest of Gosling’s spiel seems to be a self-deprecating riff on how wrong he was that the Backstreet Boys wouldn’t make it.  And then there’s the telling last line of his interview:  “I don’t know what they’re doing. I try not to think about it,”  Gosling says. Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean Talks Ryan Gosling Those comments are now being interpreted as an indication that Gosling almost joined the band, thanks, in part, to the artful comments of McLean, who added some fuel to the fire in this interview with TMZ , and revealed that he and Gosling work out at the same gym. (They must use different trainers.)  To that I can only say, if you were a nostalgia act at 35, you’d want a little bit of Gosling’s heat to rub off on you, too. Ryan Gosling’s Interview Skills Surpass Backstreet Boys’ Dance Moves As further proof that Gosling is really talented at using humor to manipulate an interview, I submit this video of the actor charmingly dominating MSN TV ‘s James Rocchi. His moves are way more advanced than anything the Backstreet Boys ever busted onstage. [Celebuzz, TMZ , MSN ] Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

‘Twins 2,’ ‘Predator’ Hypotheticals, And Handwritten Highlights From Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Reddit AMA

Oh, that Arnold Schwarzenegger . Even taking on the infamous Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) , the ex-Governator did things the Arnold way . From pimping his action movie comeback The Last Stand to delighting the internetz with handwritten (via iPad) quips and quotes (” It’s not a tumor! — Arnold “) to taking the briefest of political detours as he set fanboy hearts a’flutter, Schwarzenegger proved he’s still got what it takes to charm the fickle masses. (We’ll see if they vote this weekend where it really counts: At the box office.) Arnold, who returns to the big screen in Korean director Kim Jee-Woon’s contemporary Western The Last Stand this Friday, on which directors he’d still love to work with : “I would like to work with Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg . Also Sam Raimi would be great to work with.” Regrets — I think we can imagine Arnold has a few. But can you guess his greatest regret of all? “I most regret not doing The Rock . I love the movie, and it turned out well. When it was offered to me there was only an 80 page script with a lot of handwriting and scribbles and it didn’t seem fully baked. But they obviously did a fantastic job.” You know, typing on a keyboard can be so cumbersome. (Plus, anyone’s assistant/intern/publicist can do it on their behalf… just sayin’.) So Arnold took to his iPad to bang out some handwritten AMA answers in glorious Arnold cursive. Like this confirmation that the already-confirmed Twins sequel is indeed happening : The eternal question: ” Is it a tumor? ” Of course, the former California governor had to balance things out with some politi-speech real talk about the Republican party : “The most important thing is that we need to be a party that is inclusive and tolerant. We can be those things and be the party we always have been. We need to think about the environment — Teddy Roosevelt was a great environmentalist and people forget Reagan was the one who dealt with the ozone layer with the Montreal protocol. We also need to talk about healthcare honestly — Nixon almost passed universal healthcare. We need to have an talk about immigration and realize you can’t just deport people. We need a comprehensive answer. We also need to stay out of people’s bedrooms. The party that is for small government shouldn’t be over-reaching into people’s private lives. Mainly, we need to be a party where people know what we are for, not just what we are against.” …but he brought it back around to the important stuff : Would you rather fight 100 duck sized Predators or 1 Predator sized duck? “I would choose the 1 Predator sized duck instead of dealing with 100 duck-sized Predators. I’ve already fought a Predator-sized Predator so I am confident I could handle the duck.” [via Reddit ] Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Race Matters: Colin Powell Puts Shady GOP On Blast For Racism..“There’s A Dark Vein Of Intolerance”

Colin Powell took a moment this morning to call out those shady Republicans who are blatantly racist azzholes… According to Think Progress: On Sunday, during an appearance on Meet The Press, Colin Powell condemned the GOP’s “dark vein of intolerance” and the party’s repeated use of racial code words to oppose President Obama and rally white conservative voters. Without mentioning names, Powell singled out former Mitt Romney surrogate and New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu for calling Obama “lazy” and Sarah Palin, who, Powell charged, used slavery-era terms to describe Obama: POWELL: There’s also a dark — a dark vein of intolerance in some parts of the party. What do I mean by that? I mean by that that they still sort of look down on minorities. How can I evidence that? When I see a former governor say that the President is “shuckin’ and jivin’,” that’s racial era slave term. When I see another former governor after the president’s first debate where he didn’t do very well, says that the president was lazy. He didn’t say he was slow. He was tired. He didn’t do well. He said he was lazy. Now, it may not mean anything to most Americans, but to those of us who are African Americans, the second word is shiftless and then there’s a third word that goes along with that. The birther, the whole birther movement. Why do senior Republican leaders tolerate this kind of discussion within the party? He’s absolutely correct…Discuss. WENN

Lil Twist: Bringing Down Justin Bieber?

While fans and critics continue to react to this week’s leaking of Justin Bieber pot pictures , let’s take a moment here to divert attention from this young singer… … and focus it instead of a 19-year old rapper named Lil Twist. Sources close to Bieber tell TMZ that Twist has grown extremely close to the artist, which is raising a number of red flags for Bieber’s management team. It was Twist, after all, who was driving Justin’s Ferrari earlier in the week when it was pulled over by police, an incident that indirectly led to the death of a paparazzo . Considering Twist’s Instagram profile photo depicts him smoking marijuana, and that he’s tight with controversial star Lil Wayne, many fear that the Lil one is leading Bieber down a dangerous path. Twist was allegedly in the hotel room with Bieber when the scandalous pot photos were snapped, with insiders claiming he was rolling blunts for everyone at the party. So, what do you think? Should Justin distance himself from Lil Twist? And how do you feel about Bieber smoking p ot?   It’s not big deal! It’s a very big deal, I think less of him! View Poll »
