Deadmau5 Brings Dance Music To The ‘Masses,’ Wolfgang Gartner Says

‘He has a major role in the younger generation to this music,’ producer/DJ tells MTV News of his collaborator. By Adam Stewart Deadmau5 Photo: Charley Gallay/ Getty Images It’s no secret that 2010 was a pivotal year for electronic dance music (EDM) here in the States. With deadmau5 and suddenly becoming household names, EDM’s momentum shows no signs of slowing down. Using a conduit of collaboration, artists such as deadmau5 (a.k.a. Joel Zimmerman) have paired up with various underground acts to further the rapid expansion of the genre. Perhaps one of the most notable movers and shakers of the year is now-Grammy-Award-nominated producer and DJ Wolfgang Gartner , who recently sat down to chat with MTV News about deadmau5 and dance music’s rise to the top. “He has a major role in the younger generation to this music,” Gartner says, “but there have been certain artists that have been instrumental in helping it cross over and reach the mainstream — which I think is a good thing. I think rap artists using dance beats is a great thing. I think it just brings more people towards this music that we all love.” Thanks to several key moments, such as deadmau5 taking the helm as house DJ (well, technically “House Artist”) for the 2010 VMAs, EDM has been thrown into the forefront of America’s youth, a key demographic for any genre. “Everybody knows who he is now and he’s kind of exposing the masses to dance music. These little five-, six- and seven-year-old kids latch on to this ‘mau5head’ logo — they get into the music and he’s bringing this tiny young generation into this music that probably wouldn’t be exposed to it.” Gartner certainly doesn’t mind the exposure either. Unless you were living under a rock for the past six months, you probably heard one of this past summer’s hottest anthems, “Animal Rights,” a collaborative effort brought forth by deadmau5 and Gartner. “It was interesting because I kind of had a preconceived notion about how he would be to work [with].” said Gartner. “I think our sounds are really similar, so I figured he would work in a similar way to me, but the way that he writes music is actually completely different to me. But he achieves kind of the same sound through a completely different process.” Recorded in deadmau5’s favorite Los Angeles studio — that would be rocker Tommy Lee’s House — “Animal Rights” is a thumping progressive house anthem that melds Wolfgang’s unmistakable harmonics and funk riffs with the driving baseline and wobbly synths that make deadmau5 one of the unique forces in the dance music world. “[Deadmau5] writes these rich complex chord progressions and he does it by drawing these little bars on a grid, which is just amazing that you can do that and get that result,” Gartner goes on to say. “It just proves you don’t have to be able to play keyboards to write amazing music.” The two sound pioneers never cease to stop pushing the limits on what they are able to produce. Using drastically difference production approaches, deadmau5 and Gartner had the ability to play off each other’s strengths while recording the track. “I’d say the biggest thing is that I play everything in on a keyboard, like even my drums,” says Gartner. “I play everything in live and he draws it in with notes on a mouse, which blew me away because his music is very musical.” What do you think 2011 will hold for deadmau5 and Gartner? Bret Michaels Says Engagement ‘Feels Awesome’

‘It may be the longest engagement in history, but my intentions are good,’ Poison frontman jokes. By Jocelyn Vena Bret Michaels Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage It’s been quite a year for Bret Michaels. He worked with Miley Cyrus twice, suffered a serious subarachnoid hemorrhage , won “Celebrity Apprentice” and denied having an affair with Miley’s mom, Tish . Now he’s ended the year on a high note, asking his longtime girlfriend, Kristi Gibson, to marry him . “They swore I was the guy who would never,” he told People.com about finally deciding to put a ring on the finger of his girlfriend of nearly two decades. “And it feels awesome.” The proposal, which aired on Monday night’s finale of his show, “Bret Michaels: Life as I Know It,” wasn’t easy to time, according to the Poison rocker, who noted that some people thought it might happen at the couple’s anniversary dinner. “I wasn’t ready there because I felt really strange,” he explained. “It would’ve been like, I’m in the middle of proposing and oh, by the way, there’s a Cobb salad coming.” Michaels admits that while his proposal didn’t end up being as epic as he imagined it would be, it worked for them. “In my mind, it wasn’t supposed to happen like that — I wanted it to be a little more like the movies, where the white horse gallops up and all that stuff. But when Kristi said, ‘I don’t need this ring, I don’t need the piece of paper, I love you no matter what,’ she took the pressure off,” he said. “She used reverse psychology on me and it worked!” Instead of getting Gibson a new piece of bling, the couple will update her “friendship ring with mega benefits.” He jokingly added, “It may be the longest engagement in history, but my intentions are good.” Related Photos Bret Michaels’ Career In Photos Related Artists Bret Michaels

‘Jersey Shore’ Star Vinny’s Old Spice Spoof To Be Featured On MTV New Year’s Special

‘MTV’s New Year’s Bash 2011 will provide a comedic look back at the past year,’ says Shawn Witt, executive producer of show. By MTV News Staff Vinny Guadagnino Photo: MTV New Year’s Eve is about to get a lot funnier now that “Jersey Shore” star Vinny will be taking a comedic stab at one of 2010’s most memorable commercials. MTV’s New Year’s Eve special will include a first look at Vinny’s Old Spice spoof. “MTV’s New Year’s Bash 2011 will provide a comedic look back at the past year,” Shawn Witt, executive producer of MTV’s “New Year’s Bash 2011,” explained, adding, “Vinny’s Old Spice commercial parody is just one of the many satirical pieces we will feature throughout the show.” You know about the famous ball that drops on New Year’s Eve, but MTV has something a little different lined up for its big New Year’s celebration. “Jersey Shore” star Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi will climb into a ball that will be lowered into New York’s Times Square to help ring in 2011 at the MTV New Year’s Bash. “MTV is looking to redefine the concept of the traditional New Year’s Eve broadcast,” Steve Tseckares, MTV’s Senior Vice President of Special Programming and Production, said in a statement. “This year’s show will push boundaries and provide fans with a diversified content experience that fuses comedy, music and pop culture.” Of course, the sassy “Shore” star won’t be alone, as comedian Whitney Cummings will host the proceedings, rapper Flo Rida will perform and another “Jersey Shore” castmember, Pauly D, will serve as the night’s DJ. It’s all in the name of fun, as the special will take an irreverent look back at the year in music, television, Internet, relationships and more. “I can’t wait to host MTV’s New Years Eve Bash!” Cummings said. “It’s going to be so fun to party with the ‘Jersey Shore’ [cast] and rip on all things 2010. I’m gonna get some really good tweets.” Cummings and her crew will be joined by “Saturday Night Live” funnyman Bobby Moynihan, comedian Nick Kroll, Internet sensation Keenan Cahill and “Pretty Little Liars” castmembers Ashley Benson, Troian Bellisario and Shay Mitchell. The special will debut live on MTV and MTV2 from MTV’s Times Square studio on December 31 at 10:30 p.m. ET (tape delay PT). Of course, it wouldn’t be a New Year’s celebration without some serious fist-pumping, so the “Jersey Shore” castmembers will lead the crowd in a fist-pumping frenzy in an attempt to break a Guinness World Record. While Cummings will be hosting the show live from MTV’s Times Square studio, the hosts of “The Seven,” Kevin Manno and Julie Alexandria, will be reporting on the festivities down at street level, and the “Shore” kids will make sure to keep the crowd hyped. As if that weren’t enough, the “Jersey Shore” gang will also unveil an exclusive sneak preview of the upcoming third season of the big show. Related Photos Jersey Shore (Season 2) | Vinny

Smart Meter Opt-Out Bill Introduced In California

Photo by PGEgreenenergy via Flickr Creative Commons Several utilities in California have been installing smart meters like crazy across the state, though none with as much attention as Pacific Gas & Electric. The utility has made great strides in installations, but has at the same time drummed up a lot of discomfort and outright disdain from consumers in some communities who feel that the smart meters pose a health risk as well as a privacy concern. This concern is why Assemblymember Jared Huffman introduced a bill that would requir… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Gary Johnson Admits To Medical Marijuana Use.

(CNN) – Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson hasn't been shy about smoking marijuana in the past, but a new interview reveals that this past may not be so distant. In an interview with The Weekly Standard released Monday, Johnson admits that he smoked marijuana recently for medicinal purposes. Johnson is an avid supporter of the legalization of marijuana and the revelation that it's a part of his past isn't a new one. When asked if he ever smoked marijuana, he referenced Bill Clinton circa 1992 to The New Republic in November, saying “I never exhaled.” But The Weekly Standard prompted a response from Johnson that puts his use of marijuana within the last two years: “It's not anything I volunteer, but you're the only person that actually asked about it,” he said, “But for luck, I guess, I wasn't arrested.” Johnson, a libertarian who governed New Mexico from 1995 to 2003, suffered pain resulting from a paragliding accident in 2005. “Rather than using painkillers, which I have used on occasion before, I did smoke pot, as a result of having broken my back, blowing out both of my knees, breaking ribs, really taking about three years to recover,” he admitted. Since past use of painkillers caused unpleasant side effects as well as difficult withdrawals, Johnson told The Weekly Standard that “someone” who cared for him gave him marijuana to deal with the pain, divulging that he used it from 2005-2008. Gov. Gary Johnson is an atypical Republican who suggests cutting the defense budget by as much as 90 percent, stating that Iran's nuclear program isn't a threat to the U.S., and favoring abortion in most cases. He hasn't spelled it out his future intentions in so many words, and his political advocacy organization Our America Initiative, is a small obstacle to overcome, due to its tax status and ability to receive unlimited donations from both individuals and corporations. Still, he's the only rumored 2012 presidential candidate with an outspoken history of advocating for the legalization of marijuana, another fact that sets him apart from the rest of the GOP presidential pack of contenders. http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2010/12/06/new-details-of-johnsons-pot-smok… added by: ThatCrazyLibertarian

Open Thread: Obama Gets on Board With Fed. Worker Pay Freeze

The idea was first proposed months ago by House Republicans, as Politico notes , but it apparently took an electoral “shellacking” to get the president on board. Congressional Democrats are still hesitant. “I am encouraged by President Obama's proposal to freeze non-military federal pay for the next two years. This past May, House Republicans, prompted by YouCut voters, offered the very same spending-cut proposal on the floor of the House,” [House GOP Whip Eric] Cantor said in a statement to POLITICO. read more
