On this day in the year 1990, Kristen Jaymes Stewart was born in Los Angeles to a script supervisor mother and father who works in television. Who’d have guessed that she’d grow up to become the highest earning actress in Hollywood before she was old enough to drink? Thanks to the Twilight films, Stewart’s star rose in the blink of an eye (okay, four years and soon to be five movies), but she also deserves credit for racking up indie cred between bouts of vampire swooning. On the occasion of her 22nd birthday — and with 22 features to her name to date — let’s name Stewart’s finest onscreen moment. Stewart began her career with a few uncredited appearances in kids flicks ( The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas , anyone?) before launching a steady stream of child acting roles ( Catch That Kid , Panic Room , Cold Creek Manor ). By her early teens she was already balancing indie dramas with mainstream films ( Catch That Kid and Undertow in 2004; Fierce People and Zathura in 2005), continuing to keep a foot in both worlds even after 2008’s Twilight . Over the years she’s robbed a bank, adventured through space, battled a debilitating neurological disease, rocked out as Joan Jett, and hooked the mean streets of New Orleans; played daughter to Jodie Foster , Dennis Quaid , Robert De Niro , Meg Ryan , and Diane Lane ; and romanced Jesse Eisenberg , Emile Hirsch , Jamie Bell , Adam Brody , Eddie Redmayne , and, of course, Robert Pattinson . (This year she’ll be seen Snow White and the Huntsman , On the Road , and the franchise-ender The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 .) But reach back to 2001 and you’ll find fine work from an 11-year-old Stewart playing tomboy Sam in the ensemble indie The Safety of Objects . Rose Troche’s suburban drama featured a natural, instinctive turn from Stewart, who shared scenes with Patricia Clarkson and Timothy Olyphant a full year before mainstream audiences saw her in Panic Room . Deadline reports that Paula Patton is in talks to star with Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg in 2 Guns , a crime pic directed by Contraband ‘s Baltasar Kormakur based on the graphic novel by Stephen Grant “about a DEA agent and an undercover naval intelligence officer who unwittingly investigate each other as each steals mob money.” Patton will play Washington’s love interest, though I feel like they’ve already been here before… or maybe I just have DEJA VU . R&B singer Robin Thicke was arrested in New York City this afternoon for marijuana possession. The Love After War singer was arrested after police officers saw him smoking a joint while sitting in a Cadillac Escalade parked near Gramercy Park in Manhattan. The New York Daily News reports that Thicke was friendly throughout the arrest and even took photographs with the cops and signed autographs. Thicke is married to actress Paula Patton and his father is actor Alan Thicke, who is best known for playing Jason Seaver in the long-running sitcom “Growing Pains.” Read more at the NY Daily News. Vanity Fair magazine has released its annual Hollywood issue, profiling a dozen or so up-and-coming actresses, and – just like every other year – all the actresses of any color were pushed to the side. Literally. The cover is tri-fold, featuring one “power” panel – the one you’ll actually see on newsstands – and two foldout panels. Rooney Mara (of Girl With The Dragon Tattoo ), Mia Wasikowska, Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain landed the coveted “power” panel. Black actress Adepero Oduye (of Pariah ) is featured on the second foldout alongside Elizabeth Olsen (the third famous sister) and Shailene Woodley. And finally, on the last foldout is Mission: Impossible star Paula Patton next to Felicity Jones, Lily Collins and Brit Marling. The magazine has done this almost every year. In the past, Zoe Saldana, Rashida Jones, Rosario Dawson, Kerry Washington, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jennifer Lopez, Angela Bassett, Will Smith, Samuel L. Let’s see, what day is it? Jan. 31? Oh , then it must be time for everyone to fulminate over the Vanity Fair Hollywood Issue , specifically its lack of diversity among the featured cover stars. It’s a seasonal ritual almost as inviolable as Groundhog Day, with equally severe implications of who made the cover (and where). To wit, a lot of white chicks. Cue six more weeks of winter! At least in the grocery checkout aisle, anyway. It’s hard for me to get exercised about this tradition anymore — especially in 2012, after so many years of black, Asian, Latino and other young talent of color being routinely nudged aside for the likes of… Lily Collins. Of course, let’s be fair: Pariah star Adepero Oduye is in the center of the spread’s second page, and Paula Patton is there on the third page. And if we think of breakthrough actresses of color whom VF missed and should have included, it’s kind of a short list, isn’t it? As in: I can’t think of any off the top of my head. Which likely says more about Hollywood and/or me than about VF . Kind of. Placement is placement. Anyway, suggestions welcome! And: I’m fully expecting Viola Davis on next month’s cover to coincide with her imminent Best Actress Oscar win.
