Pedro Almodóvar has taken a rather dark turn in his last couple of outings including 2011’s The Skin I Live In and Broken Embraces (2009). Speaking in Cannes in 2011, Almodóvar admitted that he has a dark outlook on life, at least then, but he is still very capable of pulling out a comedy. And this teaser for his latest, I’m So Excited appears to be just that. [ Related: ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ Bows A New & Haunting Trailer ] There are not many detail about the film that his longtime U.S. distributor Sony Pictures Classics will open domestically sometime in 2013, but its stars include Carlos Areces, Raul Arevalo, Javier Cámara, Lola Dueñas, Carmen Machi, Laya Martí, Cecilia Roth, Hugo Silva, Miguel Ángel Silvestre, and Blanca Suárez. The clip seems to indicate I’m So Excited (a not-so-subtle reference to the Pointer Sisters early ’80s hit) will be a high-flying Laugh Out Loud adventure complete with dancing queen flight attendants and at least one pilot asleep on the job. And even Pedro himself appears to be a passenger (seated in the back in the top image). Almodóvar teased two Mays ago he was working on a comedy and even his first English-language script, though I’m So Excited or Los amantes pasajeros , which is its official Spanish title, appears to be firmly in his Spanish roots. The trailer follows with English subtitles.

Disco icon Donna Summer passed away today at the age of 63, reportedly succumbing to cancer. But while most folks remember the singer for once-ubiquitous disco classics like “Bad Girls” and “Love to Love You Baby,” and while many a film used her hit singles to great effect (recall the “Hot Stuff” scene from The Full Monty , or her own turn as an aspiring disco singer in Thank God It’s Friday ), let’s take a look back at a relatively underrated Donna Summer gem: The love theme from 1977’s The Deep . By 1977, Summer had already made a name for herself with a number of disco hits, but then came The Deep . The film’s “Down Deep Inside” combined the sultry vocals of Summer with the orchestral stylings of prolific James Bond composer John Barry, with appropriately dreamy results. Summer’s lyrics layered over Barry’s arrangement, plus a disco beat (of course) helped make the theme song from the Peter Yates-directed underwater adventure thriller a charted dance hit; it also earned Summer and Barry a shared Golden Globe nomination for Best Song. A slower version of the song included in the film’s soundtrack LP turns the theme into a sublime, seductive ballad. Of course, Summer went on to contribute to a number of movie soundtracks: Thank God It’s Friday appearance the following year also yielded her hit single “Last Dance,” and just a few years later she contributed “On the Radio” to 1980’s Foxes . And who could forget the inspirational “The Power of One,” from the soundtrack to Pokémon: The Movie ? (Certainly not Herman Cain .) R.I.P. to the Queen of Disco.

The idea of building a person to spec — especially when that person is some form of ideal woman — is one that’s haunted the movies in variations from My Fair Lady to Vertigo to Bride of Frankenstein to Weird Science . It’s an echo of the constructing of a character that results in what you see on screen — a figure who’s the joint creation of an actor, director, writer, makeup artist, dialect coach, costume designer, ad infinitum. But it’s also a concept that provides a counter to the typical romance saga in which two people who are perfect for one other come together. Why search for your match when you can make one?
Nudity Hall-of-Famer Elena Anaya is very comfortable in the skin she lives in, an assertion supported by her 14 onscreen nude roles. Now she’s is about to rack up her 15th skinema credit as Vera , the beautiful captive of demented plastic surgeon Antonio Banderas in The Skin I Live In , Pedro Almodovar ‘s lush take on the Frankenstein myth. Elena sat down to discuss the film with the horror site Bloody-Disgusting.com , which asked the Spanish sexpot about filming a disturbing rape scene that occurs towards the end of the film: “It depends who you do it with. I’m very concerned about nudity, about sex scenes that sometimes are cheap, like they don’t need to be in the film. Then I’m so restrictive. If the scenes are there for a reason, like this one was, I’m brave, ” she said. Ultimately, though, Elena says she brushes off such dark material: “It’s fiction. Sometimes those scenes, the scenes that look difficult, they are not. You’re playing. You’re acting. You’re going to some place, of course with your own emotions and everything, but it’s not yourself.” The Skin I Live In opens this Friday, October 14 , but Mr. Skin members can see much, much more of Elena Anaya right here at MrSkin.com!
