Justin Bieber Passes Michael Jackson’s Box-Office Record

‘Justin Bieber: Never Say Never’ has outgrossed MJ’s ‘This Is It’ in U.S. By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber in “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” Photo: Paramount Pictures Michael Jackson may have dubbed himself the King of Pop, but the late icon didn’t hold the box-office crown for long. Less than a year after the posthumous MJ documentary “This Is It” became the most successful concert-themed film in U.S. history, Justin Bieber is poised to snatch the mantle. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” has earned $72.2 million in domestic box office so far, passing Jackson’s $72.1 million haul. And while Bieber has racked up those impressive numbers in just six weeks, he’s got a long way to go before he laps the global receipts for the MJ doc. “This Is It” has grossed $189.1 million overseas for a global total of $261.2 million. Music films don’t typically play well overseas, and THR noted that “Never Say Never” has grossed a more modest $10.8 million overseas so far, with Paramount executives predicting that it could top out around $20 million internationally. The impressive U.S. numbers were likely goosed by the re-release of the film recently with 40 additional minutes of bonus footage from director Jon M. Chu . Bieber still has a little way to go to climb the list of the top-grossing documentaries of all time. “Never Say Never” is currently stalled out at the #3 position, around $5 million behind “March of the Penguins,” according to Box Office Mojo , and well short of the all-time record held by Michael Moore’s “Fahrenheit 9/11,” which has taken in $119.1 million to date. Bieber set off a classic MJ-style fan frenzy a few weeks ago when he visited Liverpool, England, for his world tour. And just a week later, he posed with his new wax figure at London’s Madame Tussauds , checking off another item on the list of milestones to an MJ-like career. Wikileaks: Banned In Antarctica

Our government's idiotic war on Wikileaks extends even to America's tiny presence in Antarctica. A memo sent to all Americans in Antarctica effectively censors Wikileaks material from the entire continent. Can't tip off the penguins about our secret plans! The memo was sent out to the 1,500-or-so Americans currently living in Antarctica as part of the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). It reminds them that leaked Wikileaks documents are still technically classified, and “the transmission, processing, storage, and/or use of classified information with USAP information systems are prohibited.” Given that the USAP is in charge of the United States' three Antarctic research bases and their communications networks, this amounts to a total Wikileaks blackout for all Americans in Antarctica, who are mostly scientists and support staff. Never mind that one geologist working with the USAP actually blogs for the New York Times, which has been publishing many of Wikileaks' leaked cables. Maybe all government employees should just be sent to Antarctica until this whole Wikileaks thing blows over. It's the only way to protect America. African Cats Trailer: Are Baby Lions as Cute as Penguins?

I suppose the trailer for Disney’s nature documentary African Cats kind of begs for a lot of smart-ass jokes about cornering the same “people-like-documentaries-about-cute-stuff” market as March of the Penguins and Babies . So much so that making said jokes seems kind of obvious and futile. Uh…plus that shot of the mother cheetah carrying her cub in her mouth is really adorable.

Jim Carrey To Bring Classic ‘Mr. Popper’s Penguins’ To Big Screen

Film will be upscale adaptation of popular children’s book. By Kara Warner Jim Carrey Photo: Todd Brown/ MTV News The last time Jim Carrey lit up the big screen, he did so as four different CGI characters in Disney’s animated “A Christmas Carol” reboot. Now, in addition to the recently announced project “Pierre, Pierre,” with “Bruno” director Larry Charles, Deadline reports that 20th Century Fox has lined up the funnyman to star in “Mr. Popper’s Penguins,” based on the classic children’s book of the same name. The film adaptation is said to be an upscale spin on the book, with Carrey in the role of the titular Mr. Popper, now a high-powered businessman who suddenly inherits six penguins. As Popper becomes increasingly attached to his feathered friends, his life unravels and you guessed it wackiness ensues. According to the script synopsis, Popper’s swanky apartment turns into a winter wonderland, and he almost lands in jail. “But thanks to his new charges,” the logline reads, “Popper comes to understand the importance of family human and otherwise.” Fans of the book, written by Richard and Florence Atwater, will note that this proposed film version is a departure from the 1938 original, in which Popper is a poor housepainter who receives the surprise gift of a penguin by mail after writing into a radio broadcast hosted by Antarctic explorer Admiral Drake. Eventually, one penguin turns into 12, and in order to support their expansive brood, the Poppers train the penguins to perform. Perhaps Carrey can convince the filmmakers to reintroduce the painter aspect of Popper’s character, given the actor’s newfound passion for painting, which he has been chronicling via his Twitter account. No word on when production is scheduled to begin, but Mark Waters (“Mean Girls” and “The Spiderwick Chronicles”) is set to direct. Noah Baumbach Abandons Penguins

If you were intrigued by the notion of Noah Baumbach reuniting with his Greenberg star Ben Stiller for an out-of-character adaptation of the children’s classic Mr. Popper’s Penguins , here’s some bad news: the LAT says Baumbach is now off the project. A shame. We really would have liked to see Mr. Popper destroy those pet penguins with some passive-aggressive psychological warfare. [ LAT ]
