Dr. Christine Daniel Sentenced To 14 Years In Prison For $1.3 Million Cancer Pill Scam Via NYDailyNews A sketchy California doctor who duped patients out of $1.3 million by selling them herbal remedies she said cured cancer has been convicted. Christine Daniel, 58, will spend the next 14 years in prison – and has been ordered to pay back all of the cash — for the disgusting scam. The L.A. medic told sufferers to avoid chemotherapy and pain killers — and instead charged them up to $100,000 for six months of her unique treatment. She claimed her concoction had a 60% to 80% chance of success in overcoming advance stages of cancer and could also cure diabetes and multiple sclerosis. But her remedies — which she claimed had been tailored individually for each patient — were completely bogus. Experts testified that the potion — made up of sunscreen preservative, beef extract flavoring and various other ingredients — would have no effect on cancer or any other diseases. It meant patients were deprived of proper treatment and had to endure the final months of their lives in “absolute agony.” “Daniel robbed victims of more than money, she also stole their hopes and dreams for a cure,” U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte Jr. said after Daniel was sentenced. U.S. District Judge Robert Timlin charged Daniel with four counts of mail and wire fraud, six counts of tax evasion and one count of witness tampering. The court heard from 28 former patients and family members of cancer sufferers who had died as a result of the ruse, reports the Washington Post. Daniel told Paula Middlebrooks, who she charged nearly $60,000, that she was free from the disease after five months of treatment. But, in reality, her breast cancer had spread and she died soon after. And a 22-year-old woman, suffering from neck lymphoma, was told by Daniel not to bother with radiation or chemo. Man Sets Neighbor’s Yard On Fire According to Fox Atlanta Authorities say a man who allegedly set a neighbor’s yard on fire in Cartersville on Wednesday has turned himself in to authorities in North Carolina. Cartersville police say 58-year-old Phillip Roger Bennett is a suspect in an arson that occurred on Boatner Avenue in Cartersville. Police said that Bennett had been involved in an apparent feud with Marty Corbitt, who lives across the street from Bennett. Corbitt said that he’s lived at the home about four years and had gotten along with Bennett until last week. Corbitt said that Bennett starting complaining about the length of his grass. “My grass is too tall for him. I was going to cut it today when he set it on fire,” Corbitt said. Corbitt said that he was watching cartoons with his 3-year-old daughter, Kylie, when Bennett came over with two gas cans and a lighter. “And then he grabs the gas can, starts pouring it into the kitchen. As he’s pouring, he takes his lighter and lights it. Flames were everywhere,” Corbitt said. As flames erupted around him, Corbitt grabbed his daughter and got out of the burning home that belonged to his grandmother. Corbitt said he lost everything in the fire. His daughter was most worried about losing her tricycle, but within hours, some neighbors went out and bought her a new one. Police called Bennett armed and dangerous, and said he has an extensive criminal history, including serving time for aggravated assault and voluntary manslaughter. The 58-year-old turned himself in to U.S. Marshals on Thursday morning in Murphy, North Carolina. The Marshals were able to make contact with Bennett by phone, and they talked him into surrendering, according to Cartersville police. Bennett was taken to the county jail in Murphy, N.C., and will be transported back to Cartersville as soon as possible. Bennett faces charges of arson and aggravated assault. Internet Sensation Wanted For Murder According to Raw Story Police in New Jersey are now warning residents to consider the 24-year-old hitchhiker who became an Internet celebrity earlier this year armed and dangerous, as they pursue him on murder charges. WABC-TV reported on Wednesday that an arrest warrant has been issued for Caleb Lawrence McGillvary, or, “Kai the Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker,” as he became known online, in connection with the death of 73-year-old Joseph Galfy, Jr. Galfy, an attorney, was found dead in his home in Clark on May 13, 2013. An autopsy revealed that he died due to blunt force trauma. McGillvary shot to national prominence after giving an interview describing his involvement in a Feb. 1 assault against a California public utilities worker. At the time, McGillvary was hitching a ride with the suspect in that case, a 54-year-old man who allegedly claimed he was the reincarnation of Jesus Christ, and subsequently testified against him in court. According to the New Jersey Star-Ledger, McGillvary wrote a Facebook post on Tuesday suggesting he had been assaulted and drugged. “What would you do if you woke up with a groggy head, metallic taste in your mouth, in a strangers house,” he said in the post. “Walked to the mirror and seen … dripping from the side of your face from your mouth, and started wretching, realizing that someone had drugged, raped, and (had sex with you)? what would you do?” Authorities said McGillvary, who relies on strangers for transport, food and lodging, has cut his hair to change his appearance and was last seen at a light rail station near Haddonfield, New Jersey. A man, 75, and a woman, 66, suspected of using yayo and running a prostitution ring out of their apartments at the Vincente K. Tibbs Senior Citizen Building have been arrested after residents complained about vagrants, drunks and addicts invading their building, authorities said. The suspects and an alleged accomplice are believed to be behind a recent rise in crime that had residents afraid to come out of their apartments, authorities said. Their growing fears prompted an undercover investigation and new round-the-clock police patrols of the complex. “Essentially, they were prisoners in their own building,” Chief Arthur O’Keefe of the Englewood police said of the residents. “I wasn’t going to allow that to continue.” In late April, police arrested fifth-floor residents James Parham and his neighbor Cheryl Chaney on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and maintaining a drug nuisance. Chaney faces an additional charge of possession of crack yayo. A third suspect, Selma McDuffie, a 54-year-old school crossing guard, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia after police found her with a crack pipe, police said. McDuffie has been suspended from her police-run crossing guard job in Englewood and threatened with arrest if she returns to the building. Parham admitted providing prostitutes — mostly young women with crack yayo addictions — to some of his younger neighbors in the building, Detective Capt. Timothy Torell said. More charges could be pending.
