Afrojack ‘Amazed’ By #5 EDM Artist Of The Year Nod

DJ/Producer tells MTV News he’s ‘super-happy’ and looking forward to another ‘bleepy’ year. By Akshay Bhansali Afrojack Photo: Getty Images Sure, Skrillex clenched the #1 spot on MTV’s Best EDM Artist of 2011 list, but Nick van de Wall, stage name Afrojack is still celebrating. The DJ/producer had a near-perfect year, and he continues the trend with his latest accolade: a #5 ranking in MTV’s top 10. “Yooooo! I’m amazed MTV voted me #5 Best EDM Artist of 2011,” Afrojack told MTV News in a statement. “Super-happy that you guys dig my stuff so much. I’m gonna try and make your radio a little more fresh, and your clubs extra bouncy, and bleepy, in 2012. Thanks for all of [your] support and see you in 2012!!” Save for mentor David Guetta , Afrojack had more hits on U.S. radio in 2011 than any other artist in electronic dance music. Beyonc

Nicki Minaj’s ‘Super Bass’ Is MTV’s #2 Song Of 2011!

Nicki’s bouncy hit ruled radio and left a cultural impact. By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj Photo: Getty Images It wasn’t Pink Friday ‘s first single — hell, it wasn’t even technically on the album’s proper track list! — but Nicki Minaj ‘s “Super Bass” was voted #2 on MTV’s Best Songs of 2011 list. Though Nicki’s album was released in November 2010, “Super Bass” — which was produced by Kane Beatz and co-written by Ester Dean — didn’t emerge as a single until May. The decision to drop the track as the album’s seventh single was a no-brainer. After being prompted to request a song during a radio interview with Nashville’s 107.5 , Taylor Swift answered, “Can I play album cuts?” She then began to explain to listeners how she had been listening to “Super Bass” on repeat, before Swift rapped lyrics to the song on air. Nicki would go on to credit Swift with helping make the song popular and even performed it with the country star during an August concert at L.A.’s Staples Center. “Taylor Swift did her little interview about ‘Super Bass,’ and [it] took off in the States with the people sort of knowing it,” Minaj said in an interview with L.A. radio station 102.7 KIIS-FM . “It’s just really uncanny how all that stuff happens,” she added. “We didn’t plan it like that.” The Pink Friday bonus song from the album’s deluxe edition had all the right ingredients. There’s the bright and airy guitar intro, which eventually builds into a full pop affair complete with a knocking 808 and, of course, that patented bass drum. Lyrically, Nicki threw a shout-out to 1980s rap legend Slick Rick and threatened to slap a chick all in an effort to woo her drug-dealing crush. Typically, cheery-sounding pop hits aren’t so edgy, but the Harajuku Barbie has successfully elbowed her way into the spotlight alongside starlets like Katy Perry and Taylor Swift — and has done it her way. “Super Bass” peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #2 on the rap chart, but more than its chart positioning was the song’s impact. One YouTube search of “Super Bass” will uncover the VMA-winning video for the single, of course, but also thousands of covers from artists like Selena Gomez and Karmin with ?uestlove and various renditions from fans as well. Who can forget the pink princess Sophia Grace Brownlee ‘s cute performance vid which eventually clocked over 25 million views? The clip became so popular that in October, Ellen DeGeneres invited the young Sophia onto her television show and introduced her to Minaj, making one of the year’s most memorable television moments. If you had a pulse in 2011, surely you felt that boom-ba-boom-boom bass! All this week, watch “AMTV” on MTV every day at 8 a.m. ET for our Best of 2011 lists. First Great Gatsby Images: Welcome to the East Egg Dinner Theater!

So Baz Luhrmann beats on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into 3-D. In the first photos from his splashy new The Great Gatsby adaptation, stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, and Joel Edgerton vamp it up like humorlessly obsessed guests at a murder mystery dinner party. Anybody else find the casting here a bit too pat and obvious? Leonardo DiCaprio is a… a moneyed and aloofly self-interested man! Tobey Maguire is… a nervous, kowtowing outsider! Carey Mulligan is… the new Mia Farrow again! Well. Check out the images for yourself and see if I’m too cynical.

Caption Tom Cruise’s Most Awkward Red-Carpet Photo Ever

This past week, Tom Cruise has circled the globe in celebration of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol ‘s international premieres. Along the way, he has sparked one insane rumor (about how the people of Indian will only scream for him if a free buffet lunch is provided) and has been forced to pose with a smattering of random overseas notables like the Duchess of Alba Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart in Madrid last night. What resulted on the red carpet is one of the most awkwardly staged premiere photos of Cruise’s career, and in honor of this, Movieline is asking you for a fitting caption.

Where Are My Parents: Perv In A Santa Suit Slips 15-Year-Old Girl A Mickey At Open Air Christmas Market

Really though?? This fool is going around Berlin slipping people date rape drugs… for nothing but the fun of knowing that he did it? A man dressed as Santa drugged a 15-year-old girl at a Berlin Christmas market over the weekend — the latest such attack that has seen holiday revelers left either sickened or unconscious, police said Monday. At about 10 p.m. Saturday the suspect approached the girl and her friend at Berlin’s downtown Alexanderplatz Christmas market, offering both of them what he said was a shot of alcohol in a paper cup, police said. One girl refused, but the other girl drank both of the shots. She soon started vomiting and had to be taken to the hospital, where she underwent a blood test, before being released. Police said it appeared she had been slipped some type of a date rape drug, but released no further details, citing the ongoing investigation. Eight other people at various Berlin Christmas markets have fallen prey to similar attacks — usually with an unidentified man in regular clothes handing out single-shot bottles of alcohol, asking people to join him in celebrating the birth of his child. Police say some of the victims — mostly young women — have lost consciousness and many have been briefly hospitalized. All have experienced dizziness and nausea. It’s not yet clear whether all the attacks are linked, or whether some may be copycat crimes, and police spokesman Ivo Habedank said authorities did not yet have a good description of the suspect. “Intense investigations are ongoing,” Habedank said. We have so many questions about this story. The most important being: who the hell is accepting random drinks from random strangers in the park??? Source More On Bossip! Lindsay Lohan on Playboy Pics: When Nature Calls …

Lindsay Lohan is feeling the call of nature these days. The star, who poses nude in Playboy in a Marilyn Monroe-inspired layout, says that was the simple reason she decided to bare all for the men’s magazine. The nearly seven-figure payout probably didn’t hurt, either. “Sex and sexuality are a part of nature, and I go along with nature,” Lohan told Playboy . “I think Marilyn Monroe once said that. I certainly agree with her.” To guys everywhere, the Lindsay Lohan Playboy pictures are either arousing or amusing. But to the “actress” herself, they are completely empowering. “It’s a very male-dominated world we live in to begin with, so knowing yourself and being comfortable with your body is an important thing for me as a woman.” Lohan, who is vacationing with her sister Ali Lohan in Hawaii, puts great importance on “knowing yourself and your body because it gives you confidence.” Amid a slew of legal problems that have landed her in jail over the last few years, says she now knows how to make better decisions with her brain, too. “Looking back, I probably would have listened to and taken more advice from the people whom I admire and would have followed through with it more.” “My stubbornness at 18 and 19 years old got in the way,” she adds . “During the past five years, I’ve learned that time flies faster than you think, and you only live once. You have to learn from your mistakes, live your dreams and be accountable,” says one of the least accountable people to have ever lived. The Playboy spread will be released early (it’s now coming out late next week) after the cover and some of the inside photos were leaked online.

Lady Gaga, Demi Lovato, More Light Up Z100 Jingle Ball

Kelly Clarkson delivers jaw-dropping set, as LMFAO, Gym Class Heroes, David Guetta and viral sensations Karmin help fill jam-packed MSG lineup. By Henna Kathiya Lady Gaga performs at Jingle Ball on Friday Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images NEW YORK — Without skipping a beat, Z100’s annual Jingle Ball kicked off at exactly 7:30 p.m. Friday night to an arena full of screaming fans. The head-turning lineup featured Demi Lovato , Kelly Clarkson, LMFAO , Pitbull, Foster the People, Mindless Behavior, the Script David Guetta , Gym Class Heroes and Lady Gaga , who brought some of the year’s biggest hits to the Madison Square Garden stage. ZI00’s Elvis Duran and the Morning Crew personally came onstage to introduce the night’s most-anticipated performance. “Years ago, there was a young girl in the audience watching the Z100 Jingle Ball [and] she told her mom she wanted to be a singer,” Duran said to the squealing concertgoers. “Three years ago, she opened up the show with her hit Just Dance. It gives me pleasure to say that a lifelong Z100 fan has now become one of the most important artists of our generation.” With the crowd chanting “Gaga,” the New York City native opened with Edge of Glory. But in true Lady Gaga fashion, she didn’t appear onstage right away. Instead, she emerged from a Christmas tree mid-song, decked out in a studded leather outfit. She then belted her way through “Bad Romance.” “When I was 11, I came to this very concert and told my mom I wanted to be a singer, and guys … here I am,” she said, launching into “Just Dance.” “Some people thought I was just going to be a one-hit wonder,” Gaga continued as she moved on to mega-hits “Poker Face,” “Telephone” and “Judas.” The pop diva then paid homage to the holidays with a naughty rendition of “White Christmas,” gyrating her way across a holiday-themed set, complete with antlers, Christmas trees and lights. Mother Monster danced through “Born This Way,” before closing out the show with her latest, the Fernando Garibay-produced “Marry the Night” , for which she channeled the video by changing into a a hospital gown and carting an IV stand onstage. As the song ended, fireworks went off and red confetti shot out all over the jubilant crowd. Jingle Ball 2011’s stellar lineup was more than just Gaga, of course. During a short break in the show, fans took to their phones and began tweeting furiously in anticipation of another act: Demi Lovato. Finally, after what seemed like years in tween time, Big Time Rush introduced the 19-year-old, who took the stage looking classy in an all-black gem-studded blazer. Lovato, joined by her backup dancers, opened with “All Night Long,” and followed up with her new single, Give Your Heart a Break , to the delight of screaming Lovatics. Demi turned serious, though, for her comeback ballad “Skyscraper,” and the whole room sang along. She closed out her set by ripping off her blazer, all the better to shimmy to and sing the finale, “I’m Broken.” “Thank you guys!” she told her adoring fans. “You all have been so amazing!” Turns out Kelly Clarkson, who took it back with her massive uptempo hit “Since You Been Gone,” is also a Lovatic. “I’ve been waiting for a long time to do a duet with Demi,” Kelly said. “Wow, she can sing her butt off!” she added as Demi returned for the classic “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” Needless to say, the two power singers … killed it. (Lovato has long cited Clarkson as an inspiration.) Clarkson then switched gears, dipping into her latest album, Stronger , for the sassy “Mr. Know It All,” and chart-toppers like “My Life Would Suck Without You.” Gym Class Heroes opened with their staple “Cupid’s Chokehold,” but the hip-hop/rock band also rolled out numbers from their new album, The Papercut Chronicles. They said goodbye with frontman Travie McCoy rapping his solo hit “Billionaire,” as the crowd eagerly sang Bruno Mars’ hook. Reality star Khloe Kardashian was one of the night’s guest hosts, and she told MTV News she has “a passion for music.” Dressed in LMFAO-approved leopard tights, Kardashian introduced electro-pop duo, who were short one party-rocker. “SkyBlu couldn’t be here with us tonight because he hurt himself wiggling,” RedFoo explained. Although he was without his partner in crime, RedFoo held it down, kicking off with “Sorry for Party Rocking” and dancing with two giant plastic zebras in the background. Foo went on to perform “Shots Shots” and “I’m in Miami” (a New York version, of course). He finished up with explosive — there were fireworks — versions of the LMFAO hits “Party Rock Anthem” and “Sexy and I Know It,” as fans wiggled in their seats. Youtube sensations Karmin also performed — but not onstage. They surprised everyone by rocking right in the crowd. Share your Jingle Ball concert reviews in the comments below! Snooki Sneaks Into Our Top 10 TV Characters Of 2011

‘Parks and Recreation’ antihero Ron Swanson lands at #1, with ‘Breaking Bad’ meth cook Walter and the ‘Jersey Shore’ guidette behind him. By MTV News staff Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi in “Jersey Shore” Photo: MTV It’s all come down to this: Only 10 remain in our countdown of the Top 50 TV Characters of 2011, and the results might surprise you. It goes without saying that one of our favorite “Jersey Shore” stars found her way toward the top of our list, but it’s a certain “Parks and Rec” administrator who took home all the bacon (and all the eggs while he was at it). Combine those characters with two nods for “Breaking Bad,” an Emmy-winning “Game of Thrones” actor and one comedian who risked his very life to bring some of the biggest laughs the small screen has ever enjoyed, and you’ll find yourself looking at our Top 10 TV Characters of 2011. Stay tuned to MTV News for interviews with several of our top honorees. See our Top 50 TV Characters of 2011, 50 to 41, including a masked bachelor and dashing novelist/crime-fighter. 10. Gus Fring, “Breaking Bad” I’ve never smoked meth, but my guess is the effects are similar to the feeling shooting through my body when the crank kingpin — SPOILER ALERT! — exited the smoky scene of a suicide bombing, straightened his tie and revealed that in place of his face was a steaming mass of Fring-like goo. He was in death as he was in life: debonair, a spiller of blood and totally goddamn frightening. Contemplating a “Breaking Bad” without Gus makes us want to reach for the pipe. -Eric Ditzian 9. Constance Langdon, “American Horror Story” Both television and the horror genre are no strangers to terrible mothers, but Jessica Lange’s deliciously dark Constance on “American Horror Story” truly takes the cake. How many moms have you known to allow their children to die in a house that keeps the dead’s spirits locked in our mortal realm for all eternity? The two-time Oscar winner marks her first regular television gig with “AHS,” and it’s a phenomenal debut. As awful as Constance can be, as mean and nasty as she gets, she’s impossible to look away from. And, so help us, you actually feel bad for this woman and her cursed womb. Only an actress of Lange’s caliber could make the ruthless Constance into someone you can root for despite yourself — and with only one season under her belt, we can only imagine the “Horror” Lange will bring in the future. -Josh Wigler 8. Fat Mac, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” Remember Robert De Niro’s turn in “Raging Bull,” when he gained 60 pounds to play Jake La Motta? Of course you don’t; there weren’t any sparkling vampires in “Raging Bull.” Long story short, De Niro packed on the lb’s and subsequently won every award on the planet. Rob McElhenney, on the other hand, added a solid 50 pounds of fat to play Mac on the current season of “Sunny,” and he’ll be lucky to be nominated for a Blockbuster Entertainment Award. So let’s honor him here — not only for ruining his body for the sake of comedy, but for spoiling one of TV’s oldest tropes: As shows go on, characters don’t age, they get better looking. On the seventh season of “Sunny,” Mac looks worse than ever, yet his best moments — carrying around a trash bag filled with chimichangas, insisting he’s just “cultivating mass” — steal the show. Whether it’s method acting or some sociological experiment, you’ve got to appreciate McElhenney’s willingness to bust boundaries — and waistbands. -James Montgomery See our Top 50 TV Characters of 2011, 40 to 31, including a “hootie hoo!”-hollering chef and funnyman talk-show host. 7. Milania Giudice, “Real Housewives of New Jersey “You have such muscular legs when you do gymnastics, sometimes you gotta rest your toes,” Gia sang to little sister Milania — both daughters of “Real Housewives of New Jersey” star Teresa Giudice — on her fifth birthday. The song is irrelevant to all the adorable little Milania represents, but I just love that line. Milania remained blissfully unaware of the drama her mother and castmates stirred up on “RHONJ” and instead delivered such irreverent pearls as “give me pizza, you old troll” to her father and climbed onto couches, into supermarket freezer displays and, most importantly, into our hearts. -Rya Backer 6. Phil Dunphy, “Modern Family” In the sea of characters on “Modern Family,” the biggest one of all just might be Phil Dunphy, played by Emmy winner Ty Burrell . Prime time’s most well-meaning husband, dad and son-in-law, Phil lives his life with his own joie de vivre, blind to the fact that sometimes (when he lets his feet get off the ground) he borders on the ridiculous. He’s over-the-top and underappreciated, but at the end of the day, it’s his love for life, shenanigans and family that keeps audiences, and the Dunphy clan, coming back for more. -Jocelyn Vena 5. Eric Northman, “True Blood” There are plenty of badass bloodsuckers littering vampire canon, so what makes Eric Northman (played by Alexander Skarsg
