Isht Is Still Real In Egypt: 10 Killed, 440 Injured, And Women Brutally Beat In The Streets During Protests In Just Three Days

Wait. We thought they had their whole political situation situated? But apparently, the people of Egypt are no more able to express their disapproval of the government then they were before kicking out that shady Mubarak character. Egypt’s military sought to isolate pro-democracy activists protesting against their rule, depicting them as conspirators and vandals, as troops and protesters clashed for a third straight day, pelting each other with stones near parliament in the heart of the capital. At least 10 protesters have been killed and 441 others wounded in the three days of violence, according to the Health Ministry. Activists say most of the 10 fatalities died of gunshot wounds. The fighting, sparked when troops sought to break up a sit-in outside the Cabinet headquarters, has seen a particularly heavy hand by the military. Military police have been shown in video footage dragging women by the hair, even stripping the shirt off one veiled woman, and ferociously beating, kicking and stomping on protesters cowering on the ground. Still, the protesters’ numbers have remained smaller than earlier rallies — suggesting even anger over the disturbing images was not drawing the broader Egyptian public into a confrontation with the military, which activists behind the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak’s autocratic regime 10 months ago accuse of mismanaging the transition period and committing human rights abuses. In a statement posted on its Facebook page, the ruling military council on Sunday called the clashes part of a “conspiracy” against Egypt. It said its forces had the right to defend the “property of the great people of Egypt.” Seeking to depict the protesters as hooligans — and apparently to counter the widely published images of protesters being beaten — it also posted on the page footage of young men throwing rocks at a basement window of the parliament building and of at least one man trying to set the place ablaze. The ruling generals have taken advantage of the growing frustration of many Egyptians over worsening economic hardships and tenuous security, blaming demonstrations, strikes and sit-ins for their predicament. The tactic, coupled with the military’s efforts to stain the reputation of the youth groups behind Mubarak’s ouster, appears to have worked. The military has been using the state media and loyal private TV stations to project an image of itself as the protector of the nation and filling its public statements with patriotism and grave warnings of a dire future if political turmoil persisted. Protest leaders increasingly complain that they feel isolated in a society that has grown more concerned with making ends meet than political rights. Hunger does seem to be the strongest motivator of them all. Do you think this would ever happen here in the US? Source

‘Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ Is MTV’s Best Movie Of 2011!

You won’t see a film all year that holds you like David Fincher’s thriller. By Eric Ditzian Roonie Mara in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” Photo: Columbia TriStar It was our fault for underestimating David Fincher. Honestly, though, we weren’t the only ones going, “Wait, really?” when the Oscar-nominated helmer (who got straight-up robbed by the Academy last year in the Best Director category) cast his sweet, dimpled, couldn’t-even-really-intimidate-a-tech-nerd “Social Network” actress Rooney Mara as hard-edge hacker Lisbeth Salander in his adaptation of “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.” Then, this past January, we got our first look at Mara in character : She was Salander. And we were wrong, wrong, wrong. How do you say “mea culpa” in Swedish? Maybe like this: “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” is MTV’s Best Movie of 2011 ! The movie hasn’t even hit theaters yet (that’ll happen on December 20), but trust our panel of experts on this one, OK? For all the sizzling cool of “Drive” and all the 3-D majesty of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” you won’t see a film all year that holds you — that’ll haunt you — like “Dragon Tattoo.” Based on Stieg Larsson’s international best-selling crime thriller (you know, the one half the people in any subway car in any city in the world are reading at any given moment), Fincher’s film followed up on the Swedish original, a critical and fan fave in its own right. What these three fictional treatments have in common, of course, is the story: Mikael Blomkvist, a disgraced journalist, is hired to investigate a decades-old missing-persons case. He convinces Salander, a motorcycle-driving ward of the state who’s not adverse to violent confrontations with anyone who crosses her, to assist in the search. Where Fincher separates and ultimately distinguishes his picture, then, is not in plot particulars (though he and writer Steven Zaillian do take a few liberties, especially with the ending), but in how he unfurls the story. Moviegoers might never need to travel to Sweden after watching his “Dragon Tattoo,” so fully does Fincher immerse viewers in an atmosphere of foggy Nordic islands and gritty Stockholm back alleys. There’s really no sense arguing: David Fincher is the finest working director in Hollywood. He’s also one hell of a casting director. There could be no other English-language choice for Blomkvist than Daniel Craig . Fincher fought for Mara against the wishes of his studio, even as A-listers like Scarlett Johansson competed for the role. To say Mara transformed herself to play Salander doesn’t quite capture the enormity of what the actress pulled off — butchering her hair, piercing her body, shedding weight, picking up a Swedish accent and almost re-sequencing her DNA to create the character. We’d say she came as close to becoming Salander as anyone born outside of Scandinavia could possibly be, if we hadn’t already seen Noomi Rapace’s impressive performance in the Swedish original and been sure Mara’s is the more absorbing portrayal. “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” is by no means a prefect film. It drags at times. It’s probably confusing to anyone who hasn’t read the book and committed the names of the huge cast of characters to memory. The ending, regardless of Fincher’s tweaks, remains a letdown. But these are quibbles. Let the Oscars and Globes anoint a silent black-and-white film as their favorite of the year. I have no idea why, but I’ve been listening to outlaw country for as long as I can remember…For some reason I relate to the working class, drunken anti-establishment, broken heart tormented soul shit…it’s like real music that comes from a dark place…good times… Whenever I ask an asshole, who usually has a vagina, and is usually all mainstream and annoying, what kind of music they like and they say “ANYTHING BUT COUNTRY”…I lose it on them….not only is it the most obvious cliche answer I’ve been hearing for decades that reminds me we are amongst drones who just want to fit in….it is the kind of shit that leads to me hate fucking them without a condom hoping I give them whatever STD I’m packing…. There is good country music…don’t let Garth Brooks or who ever else who ruined country fool you…Sure 99 percent of the good shit I listen to is from the 40s to 70s, but there’s that 1% ….. who is still out there grinding out Outlaw Country….pretty much an Ambassador to the shit because he grew up in and around it knowing all the people who dominated it….making him an expert… His name is Shooter Jennings . ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Needs More ‘Aggressive’ Chanting

‘If you want to be heard, get a little louder,’ composer Hans Zimmer tells fans contributing to film’s soundtrack. By Kara Warner Hans Zimmer Photo: MTV News Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer made Batman fans’ dreams come true earlier this year when it was announced they would have an opportunity to contribute to “The Dark Knight Rises” score by recording and uploading their own versions of an official chant at UJAM . On top of that, fans got an early listen of the chant via the first photo reveal of Tom Hardy as Bane . Now, with a few lucky audiences getting early glimpses of the highly anticipated film via its six-minute prologue , there is more of the chant to hear, which has us wondering if it will be part of Bane’s theme in the movie. When MTV News caught up with Zimmer himself recently, we asked how it’s been scoring for the seriously villainous Bane and how much of the chant will be in the film. “Chris [Nolan] and I came up with the idea of the chant a long time ago. I had this great idea, or maybe Chris and I did, of hundreds of thousands of people chanting. Well, as soon as you say the words hundreds of thousands of people, there goes the privacy, because you have to let people know what you’re doing.” Zimmer said the original chant that was used for the big Bane reveal was made with just a few of his closest friends, so he has very high hopes for what has been sent in from fans already. “It’s nice to have the whole world join in on a chant. My only problem is that they’re so well-behaved on the chanting right now,” he said. “If anybody goes onto UJAM right now, I need a little bit more. If you want to be heard, get a little louder, get a little more aggressive,” he encouraged. So is this great big collaborative chant Bane’s theme in the film? “It’s not necessarily his through-line; it will be an aspect of it,” Zimmer said. “Right now we’re all focusing on the chant because that’s all you guys are hearing. It’s a very small part of the score, but I think there is something wonderful about finding a way of having the people who really care for this movie be participants in this movie.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Dark Knight Rises.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .

Black Eyed Peas’ apl.de.ap Launches ‘Charity Dreams’ Auction

Fans can bid on a package that includes a Ferrari and studio time with the MC. By Gil Kaufman Black Eyed Peas’ apl.de.ap Photo: Getty Images With the Black Eyed Peas recently announcing their hiatus after a star-studded sendoff show in Miami, the band’s members are not wasting time getting busy. Leader will.i.am. has already dropped the eye-popping video for “T.H.E. (The Hardest Ever),” the electro-fueled first single from his new solo album, while member apl.de.ap is focusing on non-musical ventures. Apl announced the launch of this week of the “Charity Dreams” auction benefiting education in his native Philippines. The rapper, who is an educational ambassador for the island nation, is upping the ante on celebrity auctions in a major way with the “We Can Be Anything” event. The auction — which begins pre-registration this week at CharityDreams.com and lasts through 9 p.m. ET Monday — allows fans to start the bidding at just 99 cents for a huge prize package that may end up being the most affordable donation on the planet. Not only will the winner get a private-jet flight out to Los Angeles to spend time in the studio to watch as Apl creates a custom track in their honor, but the BEP rapper will also cut a custom disc of the session and serve as the DJ at the winner’s birthday party, where he will spin the song for the top prize-getter and 50 of his or her friends. The winning bidder will also get a 2012 collector’s edition Ferrari, $250,000 in cash and a trip to Las Vegas with 10 friends to spend New Year’s Eve with Fergie while staying in the “Real World” penthouse suite. Once 1 million people pre-register and the bidding begins, all the money donated in bids will go toward building 10,000 classrooms in the Philippines and improving education in the nation. And even before the first brick is laid, bidders will be able to join together to help build “virtual classrooms.” According to a release announcing the effort, every bid will allow users to buy virtual books, pencils, chairs, desks, etc., and help build virtual classrooms in an effort to combine gaming, social networking and philanthropy. Each time a bidder finishes a virtual classroom, an actual classroom will be named for that bidder once construction is completed on the new schools. In a unique twist, the initial fee to place a charity bid is 99 cents, with the bidding price beginning at $0. Organizers expect the final package to go for no more than a few hundred dollars thanks to a system in which each bid increases the top price by just a fraction of a penny. “That means that even as hundreds, thousands, or even millions of people bid, the final sale price will only go up to no more than a few hundred dollars,” according to a press release announcing the auction. “We have leveled the playing field, and the price stays affordable, with the auction proceeds going to a good cause.” Each bid will also entitle users to an app, music download or play list curated by Apl and featuring an exclusive song or the chance to have Apl follow you on Twitter. Adele Is Evanescence’s Artist Of The Year, ‘Big Time’

‘It’s been cool to watch her succeed, because it’s just someone who’s truly talented, no gimmicks involved,’ Amy Lee tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Adele Photo: Dave Hogan/ Getty Images In 2011, Evanescence rose again, ending a four-year hiatus with a chart-topping new album , a pair of booming singles and a triumphant tour. So as the year draws to a close and MTV reveals our picks for the Best of 2011 , we’re reaching out to a host of acts who dominated and defined the past 12 months to get their take on the year in music. And, really, there are few that both dominated and defined quite like Evanescence did. That’s why we had to ask frontwoman Amy Lee who she’d name as the year’s best artist. And her answer is sort of shocking, given that she fronts one of the loudest bands in rock. Then again, her pick did have, without question, one of the biggest years of any artist, in any genre. “My artist of the year? Adele. I think this was, big time, her year, [and] I’m just so happy to see her succeed the way she has,” Lee said. “I know she got a bunch of Grammy nominations … and it’s awesome. It’s been cool to watch her succeed, because it’s just someone who’s truly talented, no gimmicks involved.” Lee didn’t stop her praise for the British singer there. She also chose Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” as her song of the year (hey, so did we! ), proving that, though she’s spent most of 2011 resurrecting her band and reclaiming the rock throne, she also found time to listen to the radio. All this week, watch “AMTV” on MTV every day at 8 a.m. ET for our Best of 2011 lists. Then, come to MTVNews.com at 5 p.m. as we reveal our top picks of the year!
