For Discussion: Was New York Magazine Out Of Pocket For Giving Troy Davis A “15 Minutes Of Fame” Award

We couldn’t do anything but shake our head at this one. Earlier today, New York Magazine posted it’s “2011 Fifteen Minutes Awards,” which was a list of all the people who became briefly gained some kind of popular culture relevancy in 2011. This was their description of the list: “Oh, for the days of Alvin Greene and Steven Slater. Remember them? Exactly. In Daily Intel’s third annual Fifteen Minutes Awards, we pay one last tribute to the year’s newsworthy people whose names we couldn’t remember and had to Google — those who made headlines briefly, either for their own foibles or for the problems others forced upon them, but whose time has since expired (figuratively, in most cases). Like last year, there are sex scandals, viral Internet videos, and more, but the stars are all different, except in the sense that they’re no longer stars, and likely never will be again.” And on that list, as you can see above, they included Troy Davis . Which, of course, didn’t sit well with A LOT OF PEOPLE (the BOSSIP staff included). And, as with all such controversial things, New York Magazine has since backed all the way down, going so far as to take down the entire post instead of replacing Troy Davis with someone who did actually belong on that list. They explained their decision with this: Earlier today, we put up a slideshow of fifteen people who’d become briefly famous in 2011, including executed death-row inmate Troy Davis. His inclusion among a list of people who were mostly tabloid staples sparked some understandable outrage. We’ve decided to remove the post. But, as one reader commented on the NY Mag apology stated: clearly, the majority of people who championed, tweeted, and expressed outrage about Troy Davis and the injustice done to him, have probably not given that man a single thought since the last week of September, when he was executed. Some of you may have not ever even heard or read his name before September of this year and have not read or heard his name since. So, was New York Mag really wrong for including Troy Davis? Or just for doing it in such an irreverent way? More On Bossip! Silver Spoon Swag: Stars That Were Born Rich Already! Foster The People ‘Experimenting’ With Torches Follow-Up

Band broke through to the big time in 2011 with ‘Pumped Up Kicks.’ By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Foster the People’s Mark Foster and Cubbie Fink Photo: MTV News Foster the People were one of 2011’s biggest breakouts, first scoring a massive crossover hit with “Pumped Up Kicks,” then nabbing a pair of Grammy nominations and finally, landing current single “Don’t Stop (Color on the Walls)” in a high-profile ad campaign (and accompanying it with a really excellent video, starring Oscar nominee Gabourey Sidibe). So, as the year comes to a close, we asked the guys in Foster to try and sum up the past 12 months, which saw them rocket from little-known L.A. rock outfit to internationally famous buzz band. And, as you can probably expect, for a band that’s basically lived on the road in 2011, most of their milestones have to do with the size of the stages they’ve played on … and the audiences they’ve played for. “It’s funny, in January we started a residency at the Echo, which is this club in L.A., and we played every week for about a month, and that kind of kicked it off. The first week, it was half full … it only holds 300 people, I think there was like 125 people there,” frontman Mark Foster laughed. “And then cut to four months later, doing Coachella in front of 15,000 people, and then cut to three months after that, playing Lollapalooza in front of 50,000 people. It’s just been wild man, seeing the world and seeing the progression of things. … It’s crazy to think about. I feel like we have 10 years of memories packed into this one year.” While they’ll continue to tour in earnest in 2012, most of the year will be dedicated to writing and recording the follow-up to their Torches debut. Not surprisingly, Foster said the band’s new stuff has been heavily influenced by their time away from home. “We’ve gotten to write some stuff on the road so far, but haven’t really gotten to dive into it too much yet,” he said. “We’ve just been kind of throwing everything against the wall, idea-wise, like, ‘We should try this and we should try this,’ all these different boundaries to work within, because sometimes it can be really daunting I think, if you don’t have certain boundaries when writing a song. “There’s definitely musical elements that we’ve talked about — you know, really leaning on the percussive nature of what our live show has turned into this year, and bringing that more out into the second record — just kind of experimenting, doing some different, weird studio tricks; just having fun with it. But you never really know until you get under the hood, so we’ll see what happens when we start.” Are you looking forward to the next FTP album? Tell us in the comments! Slim Dunkin Reportedly Murdered After Fight Over Candy

The Waka Flocka Flame affiliate fought with man over stolen piece of candy, Atlanta police say. By Rob Markman Slim Dunkin and Waka Flocka Photo: MTV News Atlanta police are still on the hunt for the man who shot and killed up-and-coming rapper “Slim Dunkin” on December 16, but new disturbing details have emerged in the case. On Tuesday, WSB-TV in Atlanta reported that the Waka Flocka Flame affiliate and Brick Squad Monopoly member was shot in an altercation which began over a stolen piece of candy. “The information we’re getting, it’s unconfirmed, but witnesses are saying this whole thing started over a piece of candy,” homicide detective David Quinn told “Action News” on camera. According to witnesses, Dunkin, born Mario Hamilton, grabbed a piece of candy from another man while inside an Atlanta recording studio, which led to an argument and then a fistfight. The scuffle ended with Slim being shot once in the chest. He was then transported to Grady Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. There were a number of witnesses at the scene, but because police first arrived at the hospital and not the scene of the crime, they didn’t have the opportunity to properly interview all of the people who were present. There will be a public viewing on Thursday at Atlanta’s Willie A. Watkins Funeral Home, located at 1003 Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard, from the hours of 6 p.m. ET to 9 p.m. ET. Dunk was an emerging star in Waka Flocka Flame ‘s Brick Squad Monopoly crew. Aside from key appearances alongside Flocka on his 2010 debut album, Flockaveli, and on Gucci Mane and V-Nasty’s BAYTL LP, Slim was also beginning to make waves as a soloist. This past Halloween the street-bred MC released Menace II Society, a 20-track mixtape that featured Gucci Mane, Roscoe Dash and Pastor Troy. Dunkin’s death has sent waves through the rap community; his close collaborators were undoubtedly hit hard. The day after he was murdered Waka took to Twitter to express his grief. “WISH IT WAS ME … MY F—ING RIGHT HAND IS GONE,” Flocka wrote the day after the murder. The “O Let’s Do It” MC continued to vent over Twitter, writing, “damn I feel dead” and “IM LOST” in reaction to the tragic news. Police are asking anyone with information to come forward and call 404-577-TIPS.

Hey BELIEBERS! I’m April and I’m an 18 year old…

Hey BELIEBERS! I’m April and I’m an 18 year old Belieber from Austin, Texas. On November 17, 2011 I flew to New York City to attend Pencils Of Promise’s First Gala. My heart was pounding when we landed but it stopped when hotel management told me they had no records of my meet & greet wristband being dropped off. After arguing with the staff and calling multiple POP team members, it was determined that it was gone. Luckily the POP team had a back up plan for me! They allowed me to register and pick up a new wristband at the door! At 6:00pm all of the meet & greeters met outside a secret location. After waiting in the freezing cold for an hour, they opened the door and one by one allowed each of us to pass when our name was highlighted and our wristband was checked. I was pulled off to the side because I still didn’t have my wristband, but it came eventually. I walked in by myself not knowing anyone and everytime I turned a corner, a new security gaurd was there who pointed me in the right direction and checked for my wristband. I walked into the meet & greet room after checking my coat and awkwardly stood to the side. I saw that another girl was by herself so I made my way over. She complimented my dress and from there we were best friends! She said, “I really don’t want to pass out! I’m gonna cry!” and I said “My friends told me I’d be in trouble if I blew it! They don’t want me to pass out either!” LOL. Adam Braun and Sophia Bush walked around the room for a while and after everyone was in they closed the doors. There was a big black screen that you could kinda see through that had a door behind it. Me and my new friend Aisling squeezed each other’s hand as we waited for THE BIEBS to come in the room!  Scooter, Kenny and Justin walked out! Sophia Bush then got in front of everyone and said “LADIES. The man is in the room. NO SCREAMING! Now woman to women, you need to keep your cool. Don’t freak him out. On the count of 3 SCREAM! But no screaming after that!” She counted to 3 and we all screamed. Then Allison Kaye did the same and we screamed again. Then it happened. JUSTIN DREW BIEBER walked into the roped off area in front of the POP logo screen. I don’t remember breathing after that point but I made it through completely normal so I guess I was breathing. Everyone was put into groups for the pics. Me and Aisling got our chance to go up and I had my sharpie ready! I walked right up to him and asked him to sign my phone. He tried for a second and then said, “It’s not working!?” and I said, “Keep trying, it will work!” At the same time Sophia and Adam made a wall around justin, me and aisling. “You arent suppose to do this. No more autographs Justin we don’t have time!” I think Sophia said that. Then in seconds he had his arm aournd me and I had mine around him. A couple pics were snapped and apparently a video that POP used in their recap of the night. Then I started to walk away because other people still needed to go and I didn’t want to be a BIEBER HOG. Haha. But he gently grabbed my arm a little below my shoulder, looked me in the eye, smiled and gently squeezed my arm three times. I will remeber it forever. (haha I’m such a FANGIRL!). Then we walked across the street to the Gala location and cocktail hour began. There was a choir and silent auction. Durring this time, Shaq, Usher and Jaden Smith showed up! Shaq took pictures with us but Usher & Jaden’s bodyguard told me they weren’t allowed to take pictures. Everyone took their seat and Justin, Pattie, Diane & Bruce (grandparents) and his great grandmother Estelle walked in and were seated. Sophia talked for a while and some video clips were shown. There was a live auction that Justin had to jump into of course and Give Back Brands talked for a while. Then Adam talked and introduced Agency Net, Scooter & Justin who all gave inspirational speeches. I only made eye contact with Justin once when he first walked in though. After dinner I managed to catch Pattie for a few seconds and she took a picture with me. I told her “YOU RAISED AN AMAZING SON!” and she said “Awe thank you!” She is such a sweet person! When the night was over they Bieber crew exited to avoid being mobbed by all of the beliebers in the room and then I left as well. Over a million dollars was raised for Pencils Of Promise! The night was absolutely amazing and one I will never forget. Justin is the sweetest guy I’ve ever met and he truely does care about his fans. You can see it in his eyes when he talks to us or takes pictures or even just waves. I hope my Bieber Experience will inspire other beliebers to NEVER SAY NEVER because you can be one of the lucky ones that gets to meet Justin. You just have to BELIEVE   Here is the link to the video POP posted of the night! I’m in it with Justin for like 3 seconds and I had no idea I was being filmed. I was with THE BIEBS though so I probably should have assumed.  -@aprilwegesin See more here: Hey BELIEBERS! I’m April and I’m an 18 year old…
