For Discussion: Was New York Magazine Out Of Pocket For Giving Troy Davis A “15 Minutes Of Fame” Award

We couldn’t do anything but shake our head at this one. Earlier today, New York Magazine posted it’s “2011 Fifteen Minutes Awards,” which was a list of all the people who became briefly gained some kind of popular culture relevancy in 2011. This was their description of the list: “Oh, for the days of Alvin Greene and Steven Slater. Remember them? Exactly. In Daily Intel’s third annual Fifteen Minutes Awards, we pay one last tribute to the year’s newsworthy people whose names we couldn’t remember and had to Google — those who made headlines briefly, either for their own foibles or for the problems others forced upon them, but whose time has since expired (figuratively, in most cases). Like last year, there are sex scandals, viral Internet videos, and more, but the stars are all different, except in the sense that they’re no longer stars, and likely never will be again.” And on that list, as you can see above, they included Troy Davis . Which, of course, didn’t sit well with A LOT OF PEOPLE (the BOSSIP staff included). And, as with all such controversial things, New York Magazine has since backed all the way down, going so far as to take down the entire post instead of replacing Troy Davis with someone who did actually belong on that list. They explained their decision with this: Earlier today, we put up a slideshow of fifteen people who’d become briefly famous in 2011, including executed death-row inmate Troy Davis. His inclusion among a list of people who were mostly tabloid staples sparked some understandable outrage. We’ve decided to remove the post. But, as one reader commented on the NY Mag apology stated: clearly, the majority of people who championed, tweeted, and expressed outrage about Troy Davis and the injustice done to him, have probably not given that man a single thought since the last week of September, when he was executed. Some of you may have not ever even heard or read his name before September of this year and have not read or heard his name since. So, was New York Mag really wrong for including Troy Davis? Or just for doing it in such an irreverent way? More On Bossip! Silver Spoon Swag: Stars That Were Born Rich Already! Troy Davis Funeral Set And Witness Speaks Out “He’s Innocent” [Video]

Troy Davis funeral is being held today: A funeral service is set for Saturday morning for Troy Davis, a convicted cop killer who was executed despite pleas by many that he was actually innocent. The funeral service at Jonesville Baptist Church in Savannah, Georgia, is being billed by organizers as a celebration of Davis’ life. Ministers, activists and NAACP President Ben Jealous are among those scheduled to speak at the event. The event is open to the public. Davis was put to death by lethal injection last week for the 1989 killing of an off-duty police officer in Savannah. His case had drawn international attention because of the many critics who thought Davis was innocent. The case had been battled in many courtrooms before his execution. A jury and several judges on appeal determined that Davis killed Savannah police officer Mark MacPhail in 1989. Spencer Lawton, Davis’ prosecutor, has said the case withstood every legal challenge but couldn’t win the battle of public opinion. Former President Jimmy Carter, who along with Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Pope Benedict XVI was among the most influential voices calling for clemency, said as much in his statement after Davis’ lethal injection. “If one of our fellow citizens can be executed with so much doubt surrounding his guilt, then the death penalty system in our country is unjust and outdated. We hope this tragedy will spur us as a nation toward the total rejection of capital punishment,” Carter wrote. Click Here To See The Witness Say She Thinks Troy Davis Is Innocent!!

Troy Davis was executed last night (September 22nd) in Jackson, Georgia for being convicted of killing an off-duty Savannah police officer, and several celebrities reacted strongly via Twitter. His case received international attention after an informer’s testimony that helped convict him turned out to be false, and several witnesses recanted. Davis was supposed to die by lethal injection last night at 7 pm, but it was delayed as the Supreme Court reviewed his case. His appeal for a reprieve was denied, and Davis was pronounced dead at 11:08 pm. Davis was 42. Davis’ lawyer stated, “Tonight the state of Georgia legally lynched an innocent man. Tonight I witnessed something tragic.” Many others agree and call Davis’ execution a miscarriage of justice. The past week has been an emotional and challenging one, as people across the world have mobilized to get the word out regarding the pending execution of Georgia inmate Troy Davis in the face of serious doubts about his guilt in a 1989 murder. As we speak, protesters are at the White House letting the POTUS know just how they feel about this miscarriage of justice. Davis is scheduled to be put to death at 7pm EST tonight. If Davis’ life is not spared, was it all in vain? And if he is freed, does the fight stop tonight? Absolutely not. This man’s case can be the catalyst to spark new interest in abolishing the death penalty in the US for once and for all. First, everyone should understand why capital punishment does not work. The National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty has put together a list of the top ten reasons why we should oppose legal murder: 1. Executions are carried out at staggering cost to taxpayers: It costs far more to execute a person than to keep him or her in prison for life. 2. Capital punishment does not deter crime: There is no evidence that the threat of death prevents crime. The Southern US has both the highest capital punishment and murder rates in the country. 3. States are unable to prevent accidental executions of innocent people: 138 people to date have been pardoned while on Death Row. If someone is executed and then found innocent, then what? 4. Race plays a role in determining who lives and who dies: While the numbers of Black and White murder victims have been similar since 1977, some 80% of people executed were convicted of murdering a White person. Is the crime of murder more terrible if the victim is White? The death penalty seems to indicate so. 5. The death penalty is applied at random: There are 22k homicides every year, but only 150 people sentenced to death. Why? The NCADP fingers “politics, quality of legal counsel and the jurisdiction in which a crime is committed”. 6. Capital punishment goes against almost every religion: While there is supposed to be a separation between church and state, it doesn’t stop the same religious people who oppose abortion (yet often support the death penalty) from citing faith as a reason to prevent legal killings. 7. The U.S. is keeping company with notorious human rights abusers: Over 128 nations worldwide have abandoned the death penalty. And only China, Saudi Arabia and Iran put more people to death each year than America. 8. Millions of dollars could be diverted to helping the families of murder victims: The money used to execute people could be used to provide therapy, compensation of lost wages and other more tangible methods of recompensing victims of murder. 9. Bad lawyers are a persistent problem: Incompetent lawyers have been a huge factor in determining who lives and who dies. The better the quality of the legal representation, the less likely the accused will face death…is that fair? 10. Life without parole is a sensible alternative to the death penalty: Almost every state has a life sentence option available for sentencing criminals. You can take someone’s life without taking their breath. You can also be sure that someone who is later exonerated is alive to receive justice. With this information, where do we go next? Well for starters, continue contacting local government/government officials in jurisdictions that use the death pentalty. Georgia should hear the voice of the people long after tonight for what has transpired there, regardless of the final outcome. Also, get involved with orgs such as the NCADP. Use your cyber presence (Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, etc) to spread the word about pending executions. VOTE your feelings! Demand accountabily from candidates and officials seeking re-election. Don’t let Troy Davis’ 20 year fight be in vain. After #TroyDavis, Then What? A Message From Troy Davis Parole Board Stands By Their Decision To Execute Troy Davis! Race To Save Troy! A Message From Troy Davis

Below is a letter from Troy Davis who is scheduled to be executed tonight in Jackson, Georgia in one of the most controversial death penalty cases of the century: I want to thank all of you for your efforts and dedication to Human Rights and Human Kindness, in the past year I have experienced such emotion, joy, sadness and never ending faith. It is because of all of you that I am alive today, as I look at my sister Martina I am marveled by the love she has for me and of course I worry about her and her health, but as she tells me she is the eldest and she will not back down from this fight to save my life and prove to the world that I am innocent of this terrible crime. As I look at my mail from across the globe, from places I have never ever dreamed I would know about and people speaking languages and expressing cultures and religions I could only hope to one day see first hand. I am humbled by the emotion that fills my heart with overwhelming, overflowing Joy. I can’t even explain the insurgence of emotion I feel when I try to express the strength I draw from you all, it compounds my faith and it shows me yet again that this is not a case about the death penalty, this is not a case about Troy Davis, this is a case about Justice and the Human Spirit to see Justice prevail. I cannot answer all of your letters but I do read them all, I cannot see you all but I can imagine your faces, I cannot hear you speak but your letters take me to the far reaches of the world, I cannot touch you physically but I feel your warmth everyday I exist. So Thank you and remember I am in a place where execution can only destroy your physical form but because of my faith in God, my family and all of you I have been spiritually free for some time and no matter what happens in the days, weeks to come, this Movement to end the death penalty, to seek true justice, to expose a system that fails to protect the innocent must be accelerated. There are so many more Troy Davis’. This fight to end the death penalty is not won or lost through me but through our strength to move forward and save every innocent person in captivity around the globe. We need to dismantle this Unjust system city by city, state by state and country by country. I can’t wait to Stand with you, no matter if that is in physical or spiritual form, I will one day be announcing, “I AM TROY DAVIS, and I AM FREE!” Never Stop Fighting for Justice and We will Win! Parole Board Stands By Their Decision To Execute Troy Davis!

Troy Davis’ case has been one of the top trending topics throughout social media. It’s gained international attention, with renowned people in support of Davis such as Pope Benedict XVI, Desmond Tutu, and former President Jimmy Carter, entertainers such as Susan Sarandon, Harry Belafonte, NAACP, and more. “Two decades ago, a jury convicted Davis on two counts of aggravated assault and one each of possessing a firearm during a crime, obstructing a law enforcement officer and murder. The latter charge led, soon thereafter, to his death sentence. Mr. Davis is set to be executed for murdering a Savannah police officer in 1989. And regardless of the 663,000 signatures and rallies in support to free Mr. Davis, the parole board denied him clemency and he’s set to be put to death tomorrow (September 21, 2011) at 7pm by lethal injection at  at a state prison in Jackson, Georgia.. This such a sad case because there’s not sufficient evidence to say that he committed the crime and witness have recanted their statements several times. We wasn’t there in 1989, so we don’t know if he’s guilty or not. But I do know that the case needs a FAIR TRIAL.~Jazzy McBee Here’s what CNN is reporting. What are your thoughts?
