Lil Wayne Is ‘Entering Uncharted Territory’ In Hip-Hop, Lloyd Says

‘It’s like witnessing what rock and roll stars would experience,’ the ‘BedRock’ crooner tells Mixtape Daily of his longtime homey. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Rebecca Thomas Lloyd Photo: MTV News Celebrity Favorites: Lloyd R&B singer Lloyd has had a close up look at Lil Wayne’s career for some time now. The two collaborated on Lloyd’s “You” and “Girls Around the World” and later on Young Money’s breakout “BedRock,” which featured the former Murder Inc. star riding shotgun with Weezy, Drake, Nicki Minaj and company. Now, as the pair are working on their forthcoming projects — Lloyd’s King of Hearts and Wayne’s Tha Carter IV — the singer, who hopes to get the rapper on his new album, said the New Orleans MC is reaching rock-star status. “He’s entering uncharted territory, I think, for a lot of people in our generation in hip-hop history,” Lloyd told Mixtape Daily. “When Wayne walks into the building, it’s electric. It’s almost like witnessing, I would imagine, what rock and roll stars would experience earlier on in history. You don’t get to experience a lot of that in hip-hop, usually there’s a lot of hatred or a crabs-in-the-bucket mentality going on. But I think with Wayne, he’s overcome so much that the people are really embracing him across the board.” The “Lay It Down” singer has some good perspective in making that declaration: He attended Weezy’s first post-prison performance in Las Vegas and then rocked with him at the Bayou Classic, the annual football clash in Wayne’s hometown between Grambling State and Southern University. Next up, Wayne and director Hype Williams are putting the final touches on the rapper’s “6 Foot 7 Foot” video featuring Young Money member Cory Gunz. The clip was scheduled to debut on MTV last month, but was later postponed. The Bangladesh-produced standout is the first single from Tha Carter IV, Lil Wayne’s first release since completing an eight-month prison in New York for a 2007 gun bust. Arcade Fire, Radiohead Signal That Rock Is (Finally) Rising

Clearly, something is happening, and just in time for the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s Nevermind, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Arcade Fire’s Win Butler Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images In January, fresh off a year in which albums by mainstays like Linkin Park and My Chemical Romance stiffed, and efforts by up-and-comers like MGMT mystified, we published an article that wondered, rather matter-of-factly, “Is Rock Dead?” At the time, it seemed a perfectly reasonable thing to ask. After all, for all intents and purposes, rock music was dead in 2010: Nickelback’s Dark Horse was the year’s best-selling rock album (even though it was released in November 2008), lumbering bands like Alter Bridge, Disturbed and Shinedown continued to dominate radio, and even the chart-topping successes of indie acts like Vampire Weekend and Arcade Fire were dismissed as little more than flukes: They only reached #1, the argument went, because there were no hip-hop or pop albums released that same week. And with absolutely zero big-ticket rock releases on the horizon, things were looking equally bleak for 2011. But in the six weeks since we originally published that article, something pretty amazing happened: Rock proved that, much like Jason Voorhees, it can be drowned, stabbed, dragged to hell and cryogenically frozen, but it cannot be killed. At the end of January, the Decemberists’ The King Is Dead inexplicably debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart. Last Sunday, at the 53rd Grammys, the Arcade Fire shocked pretty much everybody ( except, it should be noted, me ) by besting Eminem, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry to win Album of the Year . On Monday, we learned there would be a brand-new Radiohead album arriving in our inboxes in less than a week. Couple all that with a fantastic new album from Bright Eyes ( The People’s Key, go buy it), the Foo Fighters’ hotly anticipated Wasting Light (which reteams former Nirvana mates Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic with producer Butch Vig ) and new albums from the Strokes, Death Cab for Cutie, Coldplay and Blink-182 looming on the horizon — not to mention genuinely great releases from new bands like Warpaint, Smith Westerns and Yuck — and, all of a sudden, rock music doesn’t appear to be dead at all. This isn’t meant to be some “Rock Is Back!” piece (I think we reached critical mass on those sometime around 2002), but it probably could be. Rather, I’m hoping it comes across as nothing more than the blissed-out rejoicings of a long-suffering rock fan. Because, to be perfectly honest, that’s the only angle I’m taking this week. I have worked at MTV News for nearly seven years now, and in that time, I’ve watched as rock and roll lost its grip on popular culture. Bands came and went, nostalgia acts did their victory laps, and nobody — outside of me and a few others — took notice. Rock had been lapped by the likes of Eminem and Lady Gaga, and it didn’t look like it was ever going to overtake them. Maybe it never will. And I don’t care, because, for the first time in a long time, I can unequivocally say: Damn, it feels good to be excited about rock music once again. And given the circular nature of things, I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that 2011 marks the 20th anniversary of rock’s last great uprising: the release of Nirvana’s Nevermind, which quickly thrust the genre back into the spotlight and kept it there for most (OK, like, seven years) of the decade. I’m not suggesting that the Arcade Fire winning Album of the Year is a watershed moment on par with Nevermind overtaking Michael Jackson’s Dangerous atop the Billboard chart (as it did in January 1992), but, shoot, it could very well end up that way. Nor am I expecting that, by year’s end, I’ll be writing laudatory pieces about the return of rock. But again, I very well might be. That uncertainty is key, because it contains within it a shred of hope. You never know. And for the first time in a very long time, I can almost trick myself into believing that. Clearly, something is happening, that much is certain. Maybe it’s just natural evolution, or the stars aligning, or just my blind optimism, but in 2011, rock music appears to finally be pulling itself out of its watery grave, machete in hand, ready to cut down innocent campers. And, man, does it feel good to write something like that. It’s been a long time coming, after all. Do you think rock is on its way back? Let us know in the comments!

Rumored ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Star Marion Cotillard Praises Christopher Nolan

The French actress, who reportedly is set to accept a role in Nolan’s upcoming ‘Batman’ flick, calls the writer/director ‘a very, very smart guy.’ By Eric Ditzian Marion Cotillard Photo: Dominique Charriau/ Getty Images Another week, another report of an “Inception” star potentially joining Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” Tom Hardy has already signed on to the project, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is reportedly in talks and now it seems Marion Cotillard is in discussions to accept a role, as well. In addition to their shared screen credits, the three actors have at least one more thing in common: a whole lot of love for Nolan. Hardy has previously told us that working with the writer/director was akin to being “swept up on this carpet of love,” while Gordon-Levitt has called Nolan “a genuine artist” and “a master.” Cotillard, too, has spoken effusively about her experience with Nolan, so it’s no surprise that she might sign on for what is widely thought to be his third and final “Batman” film. “The guy is so interesting,” she told us back in June of 2009, shortly before production on “Inception” began. “He writes his own scripts. He seems to be, from what I saw and what I read, so rich inside. He’s got so many things to say and share and he’s a very, very smart guy. You really can feel it in his writing.” As he did on “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight,” Nolan is sharing screenwriting duties on the new film. He also earned an Oscar nod for his “Memento” script a decade ago and is nominated again this year for his writing on “Inception.” While Cotillard confessed to us that she didn’t exactly understand everything in “Inception” when she first read the script, the French-born actress put her faith in Nolan’s talents as a writer of uncommon depth. “Most of it really moved me and touched me, even though I didn’t get everything,” she told us last summer. “But I felt that it was something filled with so many things and that when you read a script like this, the first thing is it is Christopher Nolan’s movie. He’s a writer. I had a lot of questions, but I knew that I would have answers. “I think it’s the kind of movie that each person will have their own interpretation, and that’s a good thing because it creates conversations about it and you can share what you think,” she added. “It’s a beautiful way to gather people and share something.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Dark Knight Rises.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .

Esperanza Spalding’s Wikipedia Page Attacked By Justin Bieber Fans

Following jazz musician’s surprise Grammy win, false statements, taunts added to page. By Eric Ditzian, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway Esperanza Spalding accepts the Best New Artist award at the 2011 Grammy Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Beware the wrath of a Justin Bieber fan scorned. After the 16-year-old phenom — and, for that matter, Drake, Florence and the Machine and Mumford & Sons — lost the Best New Artist award to Esperanza Spalding at the Grammys on Sunday, the little-known jazz singer found herself a target of the Beliebers. Spalding’s Wikipedia page was attacked following her Grammy win, as random facts, misstatements and taunts were added to the site and then quickly removed. After a sentence noting her victory, for example, a user added the statement, “Justin Bieber deserved it go die in a hole. Who the heck are you anyway?” In other places, the singer’s middle name was changed to both “Justin” and “Quesadilla” and her Grammy win was written up with the addendum, “Even though no one has ever heard of her! Yay!” At the end of her biography, one user wrote, “Biber 4 Lyfe.” Bieber himself shared in his fans’ frustration, telling MTV News on Sunday night, “I’m not going to lie — I was disappointed. But, you know, I’m gonna come back [next year] and we’ll take a few home.” Unlike the Wikipedia hackers, however, the “Baby” singer showed no bitterness whatsoever when he ran into Spalding backstage at the Staples Center. The two artists shook hands and Bieber congratulated Spalding on the victory. “I was one of those [surprised] people,” Spalding told us backstage. “It was so unexpected, that’s the truth. I’m grateful to all my people in my big musical family that have given me so much support and help over the years. I don’t really think this is for me; it’s for all of us. And I wish they could all be here to put one finger on this with me.” For more Grammy Awards analysis, interviews, fashion and more, stick with MTV News. Nicki Minaj On Grammys: ‘It Doesn’t Matter What I’m Nominated For!’

‘To sell, like, a million records, in this economy, that’s crazy,’ she tells MTV News on red carpet. By Ryan J. Downey, with reporting by Sway Calloway Nicki Minaj and Sway on the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards red carpet Photo: MTV News Nicki Minaj’s debut album took the top spot on the charts, she’s a Grammy nominee and presenter and she met up with her reality-TV heroine Snooki on the red carpet . But despite all the high points, the 26-year-old star assured MTV News that the best is yet to come. “In my head, I’ve already done two movies, I’ve already put my second album out, I’ve already gone on a world tour. That’s what I’m looking for the next 12 months to bring,” she said shortly before the 53rd annual Grammy Awards at the Los Angeles Staples Center, where she was nominated alongside Ludacris in the Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group category. “I have some surprises that people are not gonna believe. I have some surprises that I’m going to be able to announce really, really soon.” The hip-hop star’s Pink Friday reached #1 on the Billboard 200 chart nearly three months after its release. She’s done “Saturday Night Live” and “The Tonight Show,” and her leopard-print couture turned heads at the Grammys. It’s been a crazy ride and one that she’s learned from in ways that will benefit her greatly in the future. “I’ve learned to never rush anything in my career or my life anymore,” she said. “The last year taught me that. Like, even with the new album, it’s going to take its course naturally and everything is going to work out. Because before I used to stress out. You know, ‘Am I nominated for this?’ “It doesn’t matter what I’m nominated for! I’m working! I am a working artist in the freaking worst economy ever. To sell, like, a million records, in this economy, that’s crazy.” Next on the Young Money rapper’s agenda is a tour with mentor Lil Wayne that will also feature Blink-182’s Travis Barker and Rick Ross, among others. “I’m really looking forward to that tour,” she said. “And just getting back to L.A. and cranking out some new records and all of that good stuff. I’m working with a lot of new producers as well, so I’m excited.” Minaj’s schedule may get hectic, but she works hard to maintain balance and perspective. “Overall, I’m in a peaceful place. And that’s the only thing that you could ask for. To be in the midst of this chaotic business,” she added, pointing to the red carpet around her, “and be able to find peace? I’m good.” For Grammy Awards winners list, analysis, interviews, fashion and more, stick with MTV News during the big show and beyond. Esperanza Spalding Calls Best New Artist Grammy Win ‘Unexpected’

‘I really didn’t think it was going to be me,’ jazz singer/bassist tells MTV News of topping Justin Bieber and Drake for coveted award. By Kara Warner with reporting by Sway Calloway Esperanza Spalding wins Best New Artist at the 2011 Grammys Photo: Getty Images Who would’ve thought that a young jazz bassist would come in and steal the Best New Artist Grammy out from under the likes of Justin Bieber, Florence and the Machine and Drake? Not too many people, that’s for sure. In fact, gambling mavens Ladbrokes and Bodog placed the odds of Esperanza Spalding winning the award at an unlikely 20-to-1 . Check out photos of Esperanza Spalding’s big win and more! But she did it, and she is the first jazz artist ever to do so. “I really didn’t think it was going to be me,” a delighted Spalding told MTV News after her win. “I was one of those [surprised] people. … It was so unexpected, that’s the truth. I’m grateful to all my people in my big musical family that have given me so much support and help over the years,” Spalding gushed. “I don’t really think this is for me; it’s for all of us. And I wish they could all be here to put one finger on this with me.” Since we’re still reeling over the fact that Spalding overcame the tsunami of popularity currently surrounding her fellow nominees, it’s time to take a closer look at this mega underdog-turned-big winner. The 26-year-old Portland, Oregon, native discovered music at an early age, teaching herself to play the violin at age 5 and playing with the Chamber Music Society of Oregon. She dabbled in the guitar, the oboe and cello before settling on the bass in high school. After putting in time in at both Portland State University and the prestigious Berklee College of Music on scholarships, she broke onto the jazz scene in a big way with her album Chamber Music Society. Though Spalding was primarily known in jazz circles, her Best New Artist Grammy will surely put her on the proverbial music map for a new group of fans. “I am a bassist, composer and singer,” Spalding explained to MTV News. “I guess that’s the easiest way to describe the music I do. You really just have to hear it. It’s rooted in jazz, but there’s a lot of stuff up in there. You just have to have a taste.” Not only that, but Spalding joined music legend Prince on his Welcome 2 America Tour . She’s also performed at the White House and was featured in an ad campaign for Banana Republic. What did you think of Esperanza’s win? Let us know in the comments! Britney Spears’ Tenth ‘Hold It Against Me’ Preview Packed With Technology

Beauty shots of television monitors marks four more days until video premiere. By Mawuse Ziegbe Photo: Jive There are just four more days until Britney Spears ‘ “Hold It Against Me” premieres, and the pop supernova continues to keep the suspense high. After doling out super-short snippets of the visual to her latest dance floor-filler for over a week, the preview she gifted fans on Sunday (February 13), doesn’t feature a flash of her toned legs, or a scene where she and her dancers prepare to bust out some heart-racing choreography, but her presence is felt. In the tenth, slickly produced teaser, a lofty chamber dotted with monitors looping many of her old videos takes center stage, as the bass from her insta-smash throbs in the background. The seconds-long teasers will culminate in the premiere of the entire video, which goes down on MTV on Thursday at 9:56 p.m. ET, just before a brand new episode of “Jersey Shore.” The video, which is the first single from her upcoming Femme Fatale LP, will also simultaneously premiere on MTV.com. According to the video’s choreographer, enduring days of teasers will be worth the wait. Dancer Brian Friedman recently assured MTV News that Spears is “definitely setting the bar” with “Hold It Against Me.” “She’s showing that you have to push it as an artist: that you can’t just settle, that you can’t be calm with your choreography, that you have to make a statement,” he said. “There’s so many people out there competing in this world to be the queen of pop, and she’s definitely claiming her throne.” Even with a top-flight track record of memorable clips, Friedman maintained that “Hold It Against Me” will be game-changing. “Artistically, this video I think surpasses a lot of her other videos,” he teased. “So many of her videos are iconic, though. You look at ‘Toxic’ and you look at ‘Slave,’ even ‘Oops … I Did It Again’: People are gonna remember those videos forever. [In] ‘… Baby One More Time,’ she made school-girl outfits relevant and so popular. This video is artistically a masterpiece, and I don’t think that Britney has pushed the envelope in this way ever in any of her videos.” What do you think the rest of Britney’s video will look like?
