Nas Serves Christmas Dinner To Families Affected By HIV/AIDS

‘The community is in me so giving back is important,’ MC says of helping out during the holidays. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Nas Photo: MTV News Nas is in the giving spirit for the holidays. The renowned Queens lyricist headed to Harlem on Wednesday (December 22) to serve Christmas dinner to families affected by HIV/AIDS as part of an event run by music industry professional turned activist Maria Davis. And the Illmatic MC was more than willing to lend a hand, and his celebrity, to help the cause. “This event is Maria Davis’ thing. She’s HIV-positive, a part of the community of Harlem, so she does her thing for [the] holiday season for the people who are infected by AIDS or affected by AIDS,” he explained to MTV News. “I came through [on the] strength of her friend Melba, who owns Melba’s Restaurant — great soul food on 114th street here in Harlem. She called me [and] I came through just for the support.” Esco maintained that despite his status as an influential hip-hop lyricist and hitmaker, showing support to those who are less fortunate continues to remain a top priority. “For me, it’s like I can’t get away from the community. The community is in me so giving back is important,” he said. Nas also added that helping others doesn’t have to include logging hours at charity events, but said people can inspire by being successful game-changers in their own right. “I think when you give back, you just do your thing. You come from a neighborhood like I came from and you just do your thing, that’s all you gotta do [to inspire],” he said. ” ‘Cause every kid that sees you doing your thing, you can’t even imagine what you’re doing for that kid or that grown up. They see you doing your thing, that’s inspiration. There’s kids that went to school with me who are grown men now. There’s dudes that’s been listening to my music for a long time and the more they see me continue, that’s enough. That’s all they need to say ‘Yo, I could do it.’ ” The Distant Relatives MC admitted that he has plenty to learn when it comes to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and noted that social stigma surrounding the disease has often stymied the public’s informed awareness of the issue. “The thing about AIDS is you start to raise your eyebrow at how it affects certain communities. [The] homosexual community [and] African-American community was really the first [to report cases of HIV infection], right, so, kinda, those two communities got blamed for it — even almost like they invented it. That’s not the truth. So it’s affected everybody now, every community. It makes you want to learn about it,” he said. “When Eazy-E caught it … and my man Magic Johnson, it touched us. But then we waiting, like, to see what’s next [and] that’s not cool. So my whole thing is to learn more about it.” What do you think about Nas’ comments about HIV/AIDS? Let us know in the comments! The Situation Promises ‘The First Workout DVD That’s Entertaining’

The ‘Jersey Shore’ star says ‘The Situation Workout’ provides humor while you sweat. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Tim Kash The Situation and Tim Kash Photo: MTV News If your post-Hanukkah/pre-Christmas paunch has got you down, don’t worry. The Situation’s got something for that. November saw the expansion of the already formidable empire of the bulging star of MTV’s “Jersey Shore” — which already included an advice book and a line of protein-infused vodka — with the release of a brand-new workout DVD that might be the perfect antidote for too much holiday indulgence and not enough GTL. The DVD is appropriately titled “The Situation Workout,” and, as Sitch told MTV News, that’s about all you really need to know. “I really think it’s just the name in itself. As soon as someone hears the name ‘Situation,’ they’re gonna kind of know that it’s gonna be good,” he said. “It’s really the first workout DVD that’s entertaining. You’re gonna get some humor out of it, and it’s not only a workout, it’s entertaining to watch.” And while you wait to develop that six-pack, you could always draw attention away from your midsection with another Situation product, “shoelery,” as in: jewelry for your shoes. According to the Situation, there’s a vast and untapped market out there for footwear bling, and with the assistance of a company called Luxury Laces, he’s hoping to tap that market. “Nobody’s got that,” he said. “I’m in the process of trying to trademark that.” Of course, in between workouts, you’ll also need to relax. Good thing the new season of “Jersey Shore” premieres on January 6 at 10 p.m. ET on MTV. Related Videos The Situation’s Got What You Need

Gwyneth Paltrow Turned To Robert Downey Jr. For ‘Country Strong’ Insight

Paltrow asked her ‘Iron Man’ co-star for help understanding her drug-addicted character. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Gwyneth Paltrow Photo: MTV News For her role in “Country Strong” (in theaters this week), Gwyneth Paltrow didn’t just face the challenge of singing and recording country music. In order to embody her character — fallen Nashville star Kelly Canter — she also tapped into some dark elements that are unfortunately tied to the pitfalls of being a celebrity: addiction and drug use. When MTV News caught up with the Oscar winner, we asked her how she was able to harness a dark side for the film. “I’m a very dark person,” she joked. “Don’t let me fool you. “I think we all have darkness, don’t we?” she said, seriously. “I certainly do. I’ve been through a lot. I know people who have been through a lot, and there’s always a lot to draw from. You see things, I think, when you’re an actor. You notice behavior and you notice stuff. It all kind of goes into the computer.” Interestingly enough, Paltrow ended up reaching out to her “Iron Man” co-star and friend Robert Downey Jr. — who has been through his share of career ups and downs — for his insight into what leads a person into that addictive, self-destructive behavior. “[I reached out to him] because I understood addiction, I used to be very addicted to cigarettes,” Paltrow revealed. “I understood that, ‘This is bad for me. My father has throat cancer, but I’m going to smoke this,’ but I couldn’t understand in terms of wrecking other people’s lives in your wake and just being so altered and so drunk or on pills that you embarrass yourself and you wreck people’s lives and you cheat on people. All that stuff … it was a whole other level. “He really helped me understand how you get there,” she said of Downey. “He wrote me this amazing e-mail. I was like, ‘OK, I get it now.’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “Country Strong.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Lil Wayne Thanks Fans With Preview Of Rolling Stone Shoot

‘Thank you for making ‘6 Foot 7 Foot’ #1 on iTunes,’ Weezy writes. By Paul Cantor Lil Wayne in Rolling Stone Photo: DJ Scoob Doo On the heels of his performance alongside Eminem on “Saturday Night Live” this past weekend, Lil Wayne took to his blog WeezyThanxYou.com to express appreciation to his fans as well as offer a glimpse of a recent shoot he did for his upcoming Rolling Stone cover story. “The shoot was in Miami two weeks ago, and just being able to do this type of stuff again is therapeutic,” he wrote. “Be sure to pick up the issue when it hits stands. Thank you to the people at Rolling Stone for the opportunity.” The behind the scenes photo was taken by DJ Scoob Doo and shows Wayne standing shirtless in a photo studio with a pair of fluorescent sun glasses on, presumably looking at the Rolling Stone photographer’s lens. Wayne also thanked fans for supporting the first single from Tha Carter IV “6 Foot 7 Foot.” The song, which samples elements of Jamaican folk song “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song),” rocketed up the iTunes charts and landed at #1 in less than a week. “Thank you for making ‘6 Foot 7 Foot’ #1 on iTunes,” he wrote, “you will continue to be #1 in my heart.” Wayne is just starting to reemerge in public after being released from prison in early November. His appearance on “SNL” was his first televised appearance since then. On the show, he performed Eminem’s single “No Love,” from Recovery. Em ceded the spotlight after performing “Won’t Back Down,” and Wayne went into an electric-guitar-laden take of “6 Foot 7 Foot.” Of the highly anticipated performance, DJ Scoob Doo said, “The energy in the building is historical, and it’s extra special to see everybody fight for position backstage to see Lil Wayne take over ‘SNL.’ ” Related Artists Lil Wayne

MTV News’ Best Albums Of 2010: The Readers React

MTV.com users sound off with their opinions on the list and their picks for the year’s top releases. By James Montgomery Some of James’ picks for the best albums of 2010 Photo: MTV News On Wednesday, when MTV News published my annual Best Albums of the Year list, I wrote that “2010 may very well have been the best year for music in a long, long time … to the point where making a list of the 20 best [albums] was darn near impossible.” I wasn’t kidding, either. In fact, I was so sure I had missed some really great albums that I asked my readers to sound off with their picks. And, boy, did they ever! Over the past 24 hours, I’ve gotten tons of responses from fans all across the world (most of them angry, of course), each wondering why their favorite artist didn’t make the cut or, if they did, why they weren’t #1. There were thinly veiled threats, at least one call for me to be fired, a whole lot of curse words and even some rather spirited debate between Eminem and Kanye fans over just whose album was better. Of course, mixed in with all that madness, MTV.com readers also managed to suggest some very worthy albums that I had missed, make compelling arguments and even paying me a compliment or two. So I’d like to think that my list was a success … because, at the very least, the response it garnered proved that, unlike any other year in recent memory, 2010 really was bursting with great music — music people obviously felt very strongly about. Needless to say, I was impressed. So in order to keep the conversation going, I’m re-publishing some of the best responses here. But don’t think the debate is over … if you still feel like your voice hasn’t been heard, sound off in the comments below. And then head over to our Newsroom blog, where you can vote for your favorite album of 2010 . Because, really, I could argue about this stuff all day. On to the comments! “Props to MTV for putting Kanye at number 1 and for putting Rick Ross on the list. Teflon Don was incredible and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was classic.” — Lila “This list fails. Recovery is a better hip hop album than My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Sure, Kanye’s got the better beats, but Eminem has the better lyrics, flow and overall delivery than Kanye. That’s what hip hop is really about, sure you need good production, but lyricism is more impressive.” — Ryan “This list is perfect. Eminem’s album wasn’t that good and mainstream people need to stop believing that sales equates to quality. Kanye West put out the best album this year, hands down. MTV isn’t the only one putting it at the top of the charts and if you didn’t buy it, that only reflects your own ignorance and lack of taste.” — Moze’s Mother “Great list, I’m surprised that is made by MTV. I do not understand why people think that if an album sold more must be better than others, music is not about sales or popularity, it is about quality.” — Juan17x “I just want to say that MTV did a great job with this Top 20. And it’s great the indie groups like The National, Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, Beach House etc were recognized. Music these days [is] infused with synths, autotunes, and other forms of manipulation. Sometimes it’s nice to just listen to the bare-bone basics of guitars, drums, vocals, and the occasional piano or other instrument. And Sufjan Stevens is great too! It was interesting to see Linkin Park’s album up there, but it might really be like Radiohead’s Kid A. Perhaps by listening to the tracks more often then it would be more easy to understand.” — A.Pearl “I haven’t heard of 70 percent of these clowns … No Rihanna? No Drake? No Diddy or Nicki Minaj? Surely James Montgomery must be living under some kind of rock … a huge one. Eminem at 14? (way too low). [The] only thing I can live with is Kanye at number 1. But it’s not worth ignoring these other artists!” — Tom “I’m happy that Kanye’s number 1 (the album’s super dope), but what about Cee Lo’s The Lady Killer, Bruno Mars’ Doo-Wops & Hooligans and Kid Cudi’s Man on the Moon 2: The Legend of Mr. Rager? ” — Mendy “Yeah! Vampire Weekend is in the top 5! YES! Grrreat, Contra is totally amazing. Amazing job you guys!” — Diana “ROBYN SHOULD BE NUMBER ONE!” — Antoine “I cant believe Drake isn’t on this list.” — Kanye is the Best “[Deftones’] Diamond Eyes is definitely missing.” — Lumen “You forgot perhaps one of the biggest: 30 Seconds to Mars’ This Is War. … The single ‘Kings and Queens’ won [the] VMA [for] Best Rock Video as well as [the] EMA [for] Best Rock. Singles ‘Closer to the Edge,’ ‘This Is War,’ ‘Hurricane’ and ‘Kings and Queens’ have been in Billboard ‘s Top 10 Alternative and Rock categories as well as iTunes all over the world.” — Ana “Why isn’t How I Got Over by The Roots on this list? After all it is nominated for a Grammy. I also think that Eminem’s album was a lot better than Kanye West’s album. Distant Relatives by Nas & Damian Marley should also be on this list. I am a huge Linkin Park fan and I know their new album shouldn’t be on this list. Hands All Over by Maroon 5 should be somewhere on this list too.” — Facebook User “The editor of this article is a big fool and should be fired for putting up articles like this … No Drake, no Susan Boyle, no Taylor Swift, no Lady Gaga, no T.I. and these are the people making real good music that people can actually spend their money [on] and buy without regretting like I did [with] Kanye`s album. People actually think ‘Runaway’ is a great song just because of the lengthy video. That’s Dumb!” — Kenneth “Yo, Kenneth. Chill. We get it. You like music that sells well. You like ‘Glee’ soundtracks, Susan Boyle, Taylor Swift, Eminem, Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls records. That’s cool man … we happen to like music that appeals to us personally and possibly other intelligent, educated people with an ear for more progressive tastes. [It] just so happens, at the end of the year, journalists’ and critics’ lists are going to skew more towards our sensibilities than yours. Don’t worry though man, Susan Boyle is still going to sell 5 million records or whatever. The sun still rises in the morning.” — Yoprince Related Artists Kanye West Eminem Rick Ross (Hip-Hop)
